A Bank of India abroad education loan may suit an INR 40 lakh request because BOI’s card effective 1 June 2026 lists a 9.6% floating rate above INR 7.5 lakh and an INR 10,000 charge. A floating rate can change later. Before the family spends on property checks, BOI should accept the exact course, state the family’s cash share and confirm whom it can pay abroad.
The family’s cash share is called margin. The moratorium is the period before regular EMIs begin, although interest can continue during it. The Key Facts Statement, or KFS, summarises the actual offer, including its rate, charges and repayment schedule. Property costs should wait for course and property acceptance. Sanction acceptance should wait for the rate, margin and study-period cash figure. Each overseas transfer needs a named recipient and draw approval.
Which BOI terms are published, and which still need a written offer?
The dated BOI card confirms the current numerical rate and processing charge, while the current scheme copy and personal offer must settle the operating terms. A sanction letter is conditional approval of a loan limit. It does not mean that BOI has accepted every expense or already sent money.
APR means annual percentage rate. It expresses interest and applicable charges as an annual cost. An amortisation schedule is the month-by-month table showing how each EMI pays interest and reduces principal. These KFS fields let two written offers be compared on more than the headline rate.
| Evidence level | What it currently establishes | What you should hold |
|---|---|---|
| Dated BOI card effective 1 June 2026 | 9.8% through INR 7.5 lakh under BOI’s CGFSEL label, 9.6% above INR 7.5 lakh, and INR 10,000 processing for study abroad | Use these figures for a current estimate |

| Your approved terms | Accepted course and costs, property value, family cash, final rate, study interest, recipients and release conditions | Read the KFS, sanction, agreement, valuation and draw approval together |
The BOI rate and charge card effective 1 June 2026 gives the above-INR-7.5-lakh row directly.
Official BOI page indexed, direct verification blocked on 20 September 2026. This is why scheme details shown below remain questions for BOI rather than confirmed terms.
An older scheme-page version showed RBLR plus 2.5 percentage points above INR 7.5 lakh and an INR 5,000 charge. The newer dated card instead gives a 1.5 point spread and INR 10,000 charge, so this page uses the dated card for every calculation.
The RBI KFS circular requires the APR calculation, amortisation schedule and charges that BOI collects for another provider. RBI also restricts a later surprise charge.
Any fees, charges, etc. which are not mentioned in the KFS, cannot be charged Reserve Bank of India, KFS circular
A later undisclosed charge needs your explicit consent.
What should Bank of India confirm in writing?
BOI should answer twelve questions before the family treats the offer as usable. One dated reply can then be checked against the KFS, sanction and each draw approval. These answers separate a credit approval from money available for tuition, living costs and the visa file.
- Which exact scheme and dated rate-card row apply to the request?
- Are the university legal name, campus, course and intake approved?
- What is the maximum sanction, and which expenses are accepted or excluded?
- What is the margin percentage, calculation base and timing for every draw?
- Which property is accepted, what value does BOI use, what reduction applies, and what cover is required?
- What are the RBLR, spread, concession, reset rule and effective floating rate?
- What are the APR, processing charge, refund, insurance and outside costs?
- How is study-period interest handled, when does the moratorium end, and when is the first EMI?
- Which staff contact is responsible for the file, when was it complete, what is the decision date, and how long is sanction valid?
- Which documents, recipients and foreign-currency process apply to the first and later draws?
- How are visa refusal, deferral, withdrawal and a university refund treated?
- How can the student repay from abroad, close the loan, update the credit record and receive every property document?
A useful course reply names all four details together. It should read in substance, “BOI confirms the legal university name, campus, exact course and intake under the named scheme.” A response that says only “eligible” leaves too much open. The same standard applies to the accepted property value and the overseas recipient.
If BOI won’t settle a material point before the family must commit money, that cost should pause while another lender is compared.
Does your course and university qualify for BOI finance?
Admission alone cannot establish BOI eligibility. BOI should identify the accepted institution, campus, course, intake and scheme code in writing before you incur property or application costs. Without that record, the family cannot know whether the proposed sanction covers the admission it plans to fund.
An old university-ranking list or a consultancy’s marks threshold cannot serve as approval. BOI’s available public information does not establish one universal minimum percentage, age limit, CIBIL score or entrance-test score for this abroad scheme. A CIBIL score is a credit-bureau score. BOI can read it with the repayment history and the rest of the application.
| Admission detail | What BOI publishes clearly | Answer needed for your file |
|---|---|---|
| University legal name | No complete current public rule | Exact institution accepted for the scheme |
| Campus and destination country | No complete current public rule | Campus and country recorded in appraisal |
| Course, level and duration | No complete current public rule | Exact degree, start date and approved duration |
| Intake and admission conditions | No complete current public rule | Whether a conditional offer is acceptable and by when conditions must clear |
| Recognition or regulator | No complete current public rule | Recognition evidence BOI used |
| Scheme and rate row | No complete current public rule | Scheme code and dated rate-card row |
These are questions for the application file, not universal eligibility rules.
If your offer is conditional, BOI should also say whether it can issue the sanction before you meet that condition and what must happen before the first draw.
How much can BOI lend, what can it cover, and when is collateral required?
BOI’s dated card verifies price bands, not a maximum sanction or the exact security rule. Its available scheme information indicates a limit up to INR 1.5 crore and three margin and security bands. Treat these as questions until BOI supplies the current scheme document.
Collateral is a specified asset charged to the bank. A co-borrower is the parent or other accepted person who signs the debt with the student. An unsecured loan has no specified asset pledged, but it still has to be repaid and can still require a co-borrower.
BOI’s card uses the label CGFSEL. NCGTC calls the same education-loan guarantee fund CGFEL, short for Credit Guarantee Fund Scheme for Education Loans. This page uses CGFEL after identifying BOI’s label. The guarantee protects the lender against part of an eligible default. It doesn’t waive the student’s debt.
| Sanction band indicated | Margin indicated | Security wording indicated | What to obtain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to INR 4 lakh | Nil | Parent or co-borrower and CGFEL, labelled CGFSEL in BOI’s card | Current BOI scheme copy |
| Above INR 4 lakh to INR 7.5 lakh | 15% | Parent or co-borrower and CGFEL, labelled CGFSEL in BOI’s card | Current BOI scheme copy |
| Above INR 7.5 lakh to INR 1.5 crore | 10% | Tangible collateral acceptable to BOI | Current BOI scheme copy |
BOI must confirm the current amount, margin base and security requirement in writing.
Margin is the family-funded part of eligible cost. This model assumes that the INR 40 lakh loan is 90% of INR 44,44,444, leaving INR 4,44,444 for the family. A usable BOI answer states the percentage, rupee amount, whether it is paid once or before each draw, and who receives it.
Eligible cost = requested loan / (1 minus margin percentage)
INR 40,00,000 / 90% = INR 44,44,444, with INR 4,44,444 family margin
That arithmetic is an illustration based on the 10% margin indicated in BOI’s available scheme information. It doesn’t show which expenses BOI will accept. The branch should complete the next table against the university invoice and your living-cost plan.

The NCGTC FAQ describes assistance through INR 7.5 lakh without collateral or a third-party guarantee and gives the lender limited cover.
It states the maximum cover plainly.
maximum cover (i.e. 75%) available per eligible borrower NCGTC, CGFEL FAQ
The guarantee doesn’t make an INR 40 lakh request unsecured. For property, panel valuation means a value assessed by a BOI-appointed valuer. BOI may apply a deduction and use a lower value for lending. Legal review checks ownership and title. Mortgage or charge creation gives BOI a security right over the property. CERSAI is the central registry where that charge may be recorded. Ask for BOI’s accepted value before paying these costs.
What is Bank of India’s current education-loan rate?
BOI’s card effective 1 June 2026 displays 9.8% through INR 7.5 lakh under its CGFSEL label and 9.6% above INR 7.5 lakh. Both are floating rates, so a future benchmark change can alter repayment. RBLR is BOI’s displayed retail lending benchmark.
The spread is the percentage added to RBLR. A reset is a later recalculation when the benchmark changes. A concession is an eligible reduction, while a rate floor is a minimum below which the rate cannot fall.
RBLR + spread = displayed floating rate
| Loan band | RBLR | Published spread | Displayed floating rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to INR 7.5 lakh under CGFSEL | 8.1% | 1.7 percentage points | 9.8% |
| Above INR 7.5 lakh | 8.1% | 1.5 percentage points | 9.6% |
Figures are from BOI’s card effective 1 June 2026. The KFS must show the benchmark, spread, concession, reset rule and effective rate for your offer.
The same card lists a 0.50 percentage point concession for girl students and another 0.50 point concession for specified professional courses such as engineering, medicine and management. It does not state whether both concessions combine or whether a rate floor applies. Neither concession is subtracted in the calculator below.
The RBI floating-rate reset circular requires the lender to explain how a benchmark change can affect EMI or tenor. It also provides choices involving a higher EMI, longer tenor, a combination, or part or full prepayment. A switch to a fixed rate exists only if BOI’s policy offers it.
What does an INR 40 lakh BOI loan cost?
An INR 40 lakh BOI loan produces an illustrated EMI of INR 42,011 when regular repayment begins on principal alone at an unchanged 9.6%. If the model adds study-and-pause interest once before EMI, the opening balance becomes INR 48,64,000 and the EMI becomes INR 51,085. These are two modelling treatments, not choices promised by BOI.
The illustration assumes an INR 40 lakh request, an eligible course cost of INR 44,44,444, an INR 4,44,444 family margin, and four INR 10 lakh disbursements at months 0, 6, 12 and 18. It assumes a 24-month course, a further 12-month pause, and 180 regular EMIs. BOI must confirm the margin, pause, draw dates and repayment term for the actual application.
Interest should begin when each amount is actually sent, not when the full loan is sanctioned. The RBI circular on charging interest identified interest from the sanction or agreement date instead of actual disbursement as an unfair practice.
Monthly study interest = amount actually drawn x 9.6% / 12
| Model period | Assumed amount drawn | Approximate monthly interest | Period total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Months 0 to 5 after first draw | INR 10,00,000 | About INR 8,000 | INR 48,000 |
| Months 6 to 11 after second draw | INR 20,00,000 | About INR 16,000 | INR 96,000 |
| Months 12 to 17 after third draw | INR 30,00,000 | About INR 24,000 | INR 1,44,000 |
| Months 18 to 35 after fourth draw | INR 40,00,000 | About INR 32,000 | INR 5,76,000 |
| Total through assumed EMI start | Four INR 10 lakh draws | Changes as each draw occurs | INR 8,64,000 |
This cash flow uses simple monthly interest at an unchanged 9.6%. Actual draw dates, daily calculation, compounding and rate resets can change it.
The regular EMI calculation uses the standard reducing-balance formula below. P is the balance when EMIs begin, r is the monthly rate of 9.6% divided by 12, or 0.8%, and n is 180 months.
EMI = P x r x (1 + r)n / ((1 + r)n minus 1)
P of INR 40,00,000 gives about INR 42,011. P of INR 48,64,000 gives about INR 51,085.
Scenario A assumes the family pays simple interest on each drawn amount through the course and assumed pause. Scenario B adds that same INR 8,64,000 once to principal at regular repayment. Neither scenario assumes a fee refund at INR 40 lakh.
Household outflow means the family margin, processing charge, any interest paid before regular EMIs and all regular EMIs. Borrowing cost means the amount paid above the INR 40 lakh principal, including the processing charge but excluding margin. These definitions apply only to this model.
| Cost item | Scenario A, interest paid before EMI | Scenario B, interest added at EMI start |
|---|---|---|
| Loan principal drawn | INR 40,00,000 | INR 40,00,000 |
| Assumed family margin | INR 4,44,444 | INR 4,44,444 |
| Processing charge before GST | INR 10,000 | INR 10,000 |
| Course-and-assumed-pause interest | INR 8,64,000 paid before regular EMI | INR 8,64,000 added once for modelling |
| Illustrated opening repayment balance | INR 40,00,000 | INR 48,64,000 |
| EMI for 180 months at unchanged 9.6% | INR 42,011 | INR 51,085 |
| Total of 180 regular EMIs | INR 75,61,924 | INR 91,95,300 |
| Total household outflow across the model | INR 88,80,368 | INR 96,49,744 |
| Borrowing cost above INR 40 lakh principal, including processing but excluding margin | INR 44,35,924 | INR 52,05,300 |
Each EMI is rounded for display. The 180-month total uses the unrounded EMI, so multiplying the displayed monthly figure by 180 can differ slightly.
Scenario B raises total household outflow by about INR 7,69,376 because the model then charges repayment-period interest on the added INR 8,64,000. Scenario A’s household outflow includes the family margin, fee, pre-EMI interest and regular EMIs. Scenario B includes the margin, fee and regular EMIs because the earlier interest sits inside the opening balance.
GST, legal opinion, valuation, mortgage creation, CERSAI registration, insurance, foreign-exchange spread, SWIFT charges, correspondent-bank deductions and beneficiary charges are excluded. BOI has not published one applicant-specific total for them. Excluded means variable or not published, not free.
A one percentage point rate change is material. At 10.6%, the EMI on INR 40 lakh over 180 months would be about INR 44,464 rather than INR 42,011. That is about INR 2,454 more each month and INR 4,41,642 across 180 EMIs. This is a sensitivity check, not BOI’s current quoted offer.
What fees and property costs sit outside BOI’s rate?
The dated BOI card lists INR 10,000 before GST for study abroad, but a secured INR 40 lakh case can carry other costs that the interest rate doesn’t show. Actual availment means the borrower has drawn the loan. The card’s refund wording applies only after actual availment and only where the loan limit is up to INR 20 lakh.
No refund is assumed in the worked INR 40 lakh case.
For study abroad : Processing charges Rs.10,000/- Bank of India, rate and charge card
| Cost | Current public position | What the KFS or invoice must show |
|---|---|---|
| Processing charge | INR 10,000 before GST in the dated card | Amount paid, GST and refund position for the sanctioned limit |
| Older scheme-page charge | INR 5,000 in older public text | Not used as the current fee |
| Legal opinion | Not published or variable | Provider, amount, tax and refundability |
| Property valuation | Not published or variable | Valuer, amount, tax and whether repeat valuation can be charged |
| Stamp, mortgage and CERSAI | Not published or variable | Each government, registry and documentation amount |
| Insurance | Not published or variable | Whether required, premium, cover and recipient |
| Forex and outward remittance | Not published as one applicant total | Exchange spread, transfer charge, GST and expected beneficiary credit |
The dated INR 10,000 card governs the current comparison rather than the conflicting older figure.
For covered floating individual non-business loans sanctioned or renewed from 1 January 2026, the RBI prepayment Directions prohibit part-prepayment and full-prepayment charges regardless of the source of funds.
The Directions also remove a lock-in condition.
without any minimum lock-in period Reserve Bank of India, prepayment Directions
A fixed or older loan needs its own contract check. RBI’s penal-charges FAQ says a default penalty must be a disclosed charge on the amount in default. BOI cannot add further interest on that penal charge.
Who applies, and what documents should the family prepare?
The student and BOI-approved co-borrower apply together, but BOI does not publish one universal co-borrower salary, CIBIL score, marks cut-off or sanction time for this scheme. Prepare a complete file, then ask the receiving branch to record the complete-file date, missing items and expected decision date.
An income-tax return, or ITR, reports taxable income. Form 16 is an employer’s salary and tax certificate. KYC means identity and address checks. A title chain traces property ownership, while an encumbrance or search record helps identify registered claims affecting it. The table is a practical assembly list, not a final national checklist.
| File section | Documents to prepare | What BOI should acknowledge | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Student identity | PAN, identity and address proof, passport, photographs and signature | Readable copies and any original verification completed | Branch-issued list controls |
| Academic and admission | Class X, Class XII and degree records, test results, offer, course details and fee schedule | Exact university, campus, course, intake and accepted cost | Branch-issued list controls |
| Co-borrower finances | PAN, identity and address proof, income evidence, ITR or Form 16, salary or business records and bank statements | Person accepted, assessment period and any missing income record | Branch-issued list controls |
| Property | Title chain, tax receipts, approved plan, encumbrance or search material, owner KYC and other records BOI requests | Property accepted for legal and valuation review | Property-specific list controls |
| Funding and visa | Family-funds evidence, university demands, destination funds rule and intended overseas recipient | Margin, first-draw conditions, recipient and release date | Sanction and draw approval control |
The branch’s dated list controls the applicant, co-borrower and property-document file.
A complete file should have a named BOI staff contact responsible for it. Keep the application number, receiving branch, contact, missing-document list and complete-file date together. A digital submission screen does not prove that the credit team has every property or income paper.
The co-borrower’s income and existing EMIs affect affordability, but BOI does not publish one formula for this scheme. BOI should state any shortfall and how the family can address it.
How do sanction and each overseas disbursement work?
A BOI sanction is approval with conditions, not money already sent abroad. BOI doesn’t publish one universal application channel for every foreign admission. Confirm the receiving branch, form or portal before submitting originals. Credit approval, property work and the first overseas transfer have separate completion points and evidence.
Form A2 is the declaration used for an outward remittance. RBI’s LRS direction and Form A2 annexure show that it records the purpose and beneficiary of the transfer. SWIFT is the bank messaging network used for standard payment instructions. A debit advice records what left the account. A correspondent-bank deduction is an amount another bank in the payment route removes. The recipient receipt proves what the university or provider credited.
This is Nbyula’s document sequence for following the file. It isn’t a published BOI turnaround or a promise that every branch uses these eight stages.
| Step | Document event | What changes next |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Submit the complete application and obtain a written acknowledgement | The file has an owner, application number and complete-file date |
| 2 | Receive the credit decision and conditional sanction | You can review amount, rate and pre-draw conditions |
| 3 | Complete property legal review, valuation and charge creation, which gives BOI its security right | BOI decides whether the proposed property supports the sanction |
| 4 | Meet margin and other first-draw conditions | The approved amount can move to disbursement review |
| 5 | Submit the first demand, approved recipient details and Form A2 | BOI can check purpose, currency and recipient |
| 6 | Accept the foreign-exchange quote, including the exchange rate and transfer charge, then execute remittance | The rupee loan becomes a foreign-currency payment |
| 7 | Collect debit advice, SWIFT advice and overseas receipt | You can prove what left BOI and what the recipient received |
| 8 | Submit the next demand and academic evidence for a later draw | BOI reviews the next approved payment |
The table is a document-control sequence. BOI must confirm its actual draw process and recipient rules.
| Timeline | Completion point | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Credit decision timeline | KFS and accepted sanction with clear conditions | Application acknowledgement, KFS and sanction letter |
| First-remittance timeline | Approved recipient receives the required amount | Demand, draw approval, Form A2, debit advice, SWIFT advice and recipient receipt |
BOI doesn’t state one universal sanction time. Work backwards from the university deposit, visa filing and first-fee deadlines. The branch acknowledgement should carry a target credit-decision date and first-payment date. A later draw may need a fresh university demand and academic evidence, so one successful transfer does not approve the next.
Will the BOI sanction work for your visa funds?
It can, but only when the sanction matches the destination’s evidence format and BOI can release the money in the required way. The recipient is the university, account or provider that BOI pays. A Form I-20 is the US school’s eligibility and funding form.
A GIC is a Canadian guaranteed investment certificate released under stated terms. A blocked account holds German living funds and limits monthly withdrawals. Australia’s genuine-access test asks whether the applicant can actually use the money. UK Appendix Finance is the rule governing financial evidence.
The five country rules differ enough that the same sanction letter can work in one file and need changes in another. The final column tells you what BOI must settle before a visa or university deadline.
| Destination | Current official evidence rule | Written BOI answer needed |
|---|---|---|
| USA | The Department of State guidance allows an existing loan to support first-year funds, while future borrowing plans do not. The school’s cost figure controls. | Final amount, availability conditions and timing before Form I-20 and visa evidence |
| UK | Appendix Finance requires the letter to be no more than six months old, name the student and amount, come from a qualifying lender or scheme, and have no condition except a successful study application. For a BOI commercial-bank loan, the funds must be available to the student before travel or be paid to the sponsor before travel with the living-cost portion available before arrival. | A UK-formatted letter and confirmation of which commercial-bank timing route BOI will follow |
| Canada | IRCC accepts a bank education loan as evidence, while tuition, living and transport funds still need proof. A GIC is one possible form, not a universal requirement. | Whether BOI can pay the selected recipient and prove funds for the required period |
| Germany | German Missions in India treats the education loan as additional to a blocked account or another accepted secure-livelihood route. | Whether BOI will pay the selected blocked-account provider before the filing date |
| Australia | Australia’s financial-capacity instrument accepts a financial-institution loan as evidence, subject to the full amount and genuine access. | Amount, conditions, permitted recipients and evidence that the student can actually use the money |

Germany also states the relationship plainly.
An education loan is additional to the blocked account. German Missions in India, national-visa FAQ
BOI’s public information does not settle payment to a German blocked-account provider, Canadian GIC provider or UK maintenance account. Its answer should name the recipient, currency, amount, transfer date, documents and refund treatment.
Which government, tax and remittance rules apply?
India’s government loan support, tax deduction and remittance rules solve different issues. PM-Vidyalaxmi concerns education-loan support but excludes foreign institutions. CGFEL is limited protection for a lender on an eligible smaller loan. LRS controls outward remittance. Section 129 concerns an interest deduction, while section 394 concerns TCS on remittance.
| Rule | What it does | Effect on this INR 40 lakh model |
|---|---|---|
| PM-Vidyalaxmi | Government education-loan support for covered institutions | Doesn’t cover the foreign institution |
| CGFEL | Partial lender guarantee for eligible loans through INR 7.5 lakh | Doesn’t make the INR 40 lakh request unsecured |
| LRS | Framework for a resident’s permitted outward remittance | Controls the overseas transfer, not the BOI sanction ceiling |
| Section 129 | Possible deduction for qualifying education-loan interest | Depends on the borrower, lender, payment and tax regime |
| Section 394 | TCS treatment for specified outward remittances | Separates qualifying loan-funded and self-funded amounts |
The PIB PM-Vidyalaxmi backgrounder dated 29 July 2026 excludes overseas institutions.
foreign education institutions are not covered under the scheme Press Information Bureau, PM-Vidyalaxmi backgrounder
The RBI Liberalised Remittance Scheme, or LRS, is the framework under which a resident individual sends money abroad for permitted purposes. An authorised dealer is the bank or other entity permitted to process that remittance. The RBI LRS Master Direction allows an authorised dealer to release more than USD 250,000 for study without prior RBI approval when the overseas institution’s estimate supports it. That is a remittance rule, not a BOI sanction ceiling.
The borrower who pays qualifying loan interest may claim a deduction under section 129 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 as amended by the Finance Act, 2026 in the initial tax year and next seven years, or until the interest is fully paid. A tax year is the year for which income and deductions are assessed. The default regime is the tax calculation regime that applies unless a permitted alternative is chosen. It does not allow this deduction. Section 129 states no rupee cap, but the borrower, relative, lender and payment conditions still apply.
Tax collected at source, or TCS, is an amount collected on specified remittances and recorded against the taxpayer. Aggregate means the combined LRS remittances counted for that person in the tax year. From 1 April 2026, the Finance Act, 2026 sets the self-funded education-remittance rate at 2%. The current consolidated Income-tax Act applies it only to the aggregate amount above INR 10 lakh and excludes a qualifying loan-funded education remittance under section 394(4)(b), subject to correct classification and records.
Self-funded TCS on INR 30 lakh = (INR 30 lakh minus INR 10 lakh) x 2% = INR 40,000
The INR 40 lakh loan-funded portion in this model would be excluded if it is correctly classified and documented. The INR 4,44,444 family margin alone doesn’t cross the INR 10 lakh threshold, assuming no other LRS remittance in that tax year, so this simple example produces no self-funded TCS. Mixed funding should be recorded separately by the authorised dealer. The section 394 exclusion and section 129 deduction remain separate rules.
What mistakes should you avoid before accepting BOI’s offer?
Seven common mistakes can make a reasonable headline offer unusable. Each one can be settled by a dated document or left as an explicit open point before you commit. The items below show which document or amount resolves each issue before the family signs or pays.
- Using the older scheme-page spread instead of the newer dated card applies the wrong figure. The KFS should name the 1 June 2026 card or a later applicable card.
- Calling the processing fee free upfront hides separate questions about the INR 10,000 amount, GST and limited refund wording.
- University admission is not BOI approval of the exact campus, course and costs.
- Your family’s property estimate is not BOI’s accepted security value before legal review and panel valuation.
- A moratorium is not automatically interest-free, and neither calculator scenario is BOI policy.
- Every later semester payment remains subject to its own current demand and evidence.
- A quick online application claim is not a promise of sanction or first remittance.
Three borrower protections are clear. Your KFS must show APR, charges and the amortisation schedule. Interest should begin on the actual amount sent and its actual date. A covered new floating individual non-business loan has RBI’s prepayment protection.
If disclosure or service fails, complain to BOI first and preserve the acknowledgement. The RBI Ombudsman Scheme FAQ effective 1 July 2026 permits escalation through the RBI Complaint Management System when BOI gives no response within 30 days or its response is unsatisfactory. A complaint can address service or disclosure. Commercial credit judgement remains outside the Ombudsman’s scope.
The calculator compares rate, fee and EMI. Course, property and transfer decisions still require BOI’s written offer.
When should you compare another lender with BOI?
Compare another lender when BOI’s accepted property value, family margin, payment route or timing does not fit the admission. Use the same amount, course, security, study-period payment and repayment term in every written offer. This shortlist compares routes, not final prices.

Put each offer in one row using APR, opening repayment balance, monthly study-period cash, insurance, processing and property costs, approved recipients, reset behaviour, currency risk and total repayment. This exposes differences that a starting rate hides.
How do you close the loan and property charge?
Paying the balance to zero is only the first closure step. Keep the dated final-dues statement, payment receipt, zero-balance statement, closure letter and no-objection certificate. Also obtain proof that BOI has updated the credit bureaus and satisfied the registered property charge.
Ask for an inventory of every original property document and sign a receipt only after checking the returned set. The applicable BOI policy and your security documents control the return process. No fixed deadline or compensation is stated because BOI must verify the current terms.
- BOI’s card effective 1 June 2026 lists a 9.6% floating rate above INR 7.5 lakh and INR 10,000 processing before GST for study abroad.
- BOI should confirm the course, margin, accepted property value, moratorium and overseas recipient for the actual application.
- In the INR 40 lakh model, adding INR 8,64,000 of study-and-pause interest raises EMI from INR 42,011 to INR 51,085 and household outflow by about INR 7,69,376.
- Your family should hold the KFS, sanction, property reports and recipient-specific draw approval before treating the sanctioned amount as usable money.
Frequently asked questions
What is Bank of India’s current rate for an abroad education loan?
It is 9.6% floating above INR 7.5 lakh in BOI’s card effective 1 June 2026. The card displays 9.8% through INR 7.5 lakh under BOI’s CGFSEL label. Your final rate can differ through an eligible concession or later reset, so check the benchmark and spread in the KFS.
Does Bank of India give an education loan without collateral?
Possibly in a lower eligible band, but not for the INR 40 lakh case modelled here. The lower-band details reviewed for this page point to a CGFEL route through INR 7.5 lakh and tangible collateral above it. Obtain the current scheme copy and confirm the co-borrower and security terms before relying on that route.
What is the maximum Bank of India loan for study abroad?
The public ceiling reviewed for this page is INR 1.5 crore, but BOI should supply the current scheme document before you rely on it. The approved amount also depends on accepted costs, course assessment, repayment capacity and the property value that BOI accepts for the application.
What margin does Bank of India ask for foreign study?
The reviewed margin bands are nil through INR 4 lakh, 15% above INR 4 lakh through INR 7.5 lakh, and 10% above that. Your offer should state the approved percentage, calculation base, rupee amount and timing. The INR 40 lakh example uses 10% only as a modelling assumption.
Is the Bank of India processing fee refundable?
Not for the modelled INR 40 lakh limit. BOI’s 1 June 2026 card lists INR 10,000 before GST and promises a refund after actual availment only where the loan limit is up to INR 20 lakh. The worked example therefore includes the full charge and assumes no refund.
What is the Bank of India moratorium period?
The scheme wording reviewed points to the course period plus one year, but BOI should confirm the current duration and interest treatment. A moratorium is the period before regular EMIs begin, not necessarily an interest-free period. Your repayment schedule should show its end date, opening balance and first EMI date.
Can a Bank of India sanction letter be used for a student visa?
Yes, when it matches that country’s format, amount, availability and recipient rules. The UK prescribes loan-letter and release conditions, Germany may need separate secure-livelihood evidence, and the USA needs an existing loan rather than a plan to borrow later. Ask BOI to confirm the release conditions and recipient before filing.
