Canara Bank has two loan options for studying abroad. Its Masters Degree loan starts above INR 7.5 lakh, with floating rates from 9.25% to 10.1% on 20 September 2026. A qualifying master’s at a select foreign university is assessed under that secured option. Other eligible foreign courses are assessed under the Indian Banks’ Association, or IBA, Model route. Vidya Turant is for study in India, not abroad.
Before you pay any charge, ask Canara to confirm your university, campus, course and scheme code in writing. Canara’s live Masters page did not expose a working current university list on 20 September 2026, and an older indexed PDF returned 404. Ask the bank to include how it will treat your test score or waiver, how much collateral it requires and which rate applies.
What do Canara Bank’s education-loan terms mean?
First identify the Canara scheme that applies to you. That choice affects your collateral, margin and interest rate. Your sanction letter and Key Facts Statement, or KFS, then show the terms Canara has approved for your application. Those documents aren’t interchangeable with the website.
- Collateral: A specified asset charged to the bank, subject to Canara’s legal and valuation acceptance.
- Collateral coverage: The percentage of the loan that the accepted security must cover. A property’s market value and the value Canara accepts aren’t necessarily the same.
- Unsecured: A loan with no specified asset pledged. It can still require a co-borrower and full repayment.
- Co-borrower: The parent or guardian who signs with the student under Canara’s published overseas terms.
- Margin: The family-funded share. Canara states the Masters margin as 10% of the loan amount, while the IBA route uses 15% for foreign study above INR 4 lakh.
- Moratorium: The approved period before regular principal-and-interest instalments. It is not automatically interest-free.
- Sanction letter: Conditional written approval of a limit. It is not money already transferred to an overseas recipient.
- Benchmark and spread: Canara’s Repo Linked Lending Rate, or RLLR, plus the additional percentage that produces a floating rate.
- KFS: The Key Facts Statement for the particular offer.
- APR: The annual percentage rate, which includes applicable disclosed credit costs and is broader than the interest rate alone.
- Amortisation schedule: A month-by-month breakdown showing how each payment is divided between principal and interest.
- Form A2: The declaration that records a foreign remittance’s purpose, source and beneficiary details.
- CIBIL score: A credit-bureau score that Canara reads with the underlying repayment record and other appraisal information.
Under the RBI commercial-bank conduct Directions updated 1 July 2026, a retail term-loan KFS must show the sanctioned amount, net amount disbursed, rate type, APR, charges and repayment schedule. For a loan lasting at least seven days, the proposal must remain valid for at least three working days.
RBI also restricts charges that appear after the KFS has been accepted.
which are not mentioned in the KFS, cannot be charged by the bank to the borrower at any stage Reserve Bank of India, conduct Directions
The full rule permits a later undisclosed charge only with the borrower’s explicit consent.
Which Canara Bank route applies to your foreign admit?
Check the Masters Degree loan first if you have an admit for a master’s at a select university and your family can provide collateral covering at least 50% of the loan. Other eligible overseas courses may be assessed under the IBA Model route. Do not use Vidya Turant terms for an overseas course because that scheme covers study in India.
Canara calls its general scheme the IBA Model Education Loan Scheme, while its rate table uses the name Vidya Sagar. The public pages do not fully explain how the two names map to an individual foreign-study sanction, so your KFS must name the scheme and rate Canara approves.
| Route and country scope | Who it can fit | Decisive published condition |
|---|---|---|
| Masters Degree, abroad | A master’s at a select foreign university | Loan above INR 7.50 lakh, at least 50% collateral and 10% margin on loan amount |
| IBA Model, India and abroad | Eligible undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD and postgraduate diploma study | Merit-quota foreign loan above INR 7.50 lakh needs at least 100% tangible collateral |
| Vidya Turant, India only | Higher study at a mapped premier Indian institution | Canara’s current FAQ excludes study abroad |
Route terms were checked on Canara’s live scheme pages on 20 September 2026. The applicant’s written scheme code and KFS control the individual offer.
Canara’s current Vidya Turant FAQ, accessed 20 September 2026, gives an explicit answer despite conflicting travel-expense wording elsewhere on the same page.
does not cover Education loan for studying abroad. Canara Bank, Vidya Turant FAQ
Vidya Turant’s India-only limits of INR 50 lakh, INR 40 lakh and INR 30 lakh, nil margin and collateral-free terms therefore cannot be used for a foreign university. The correct route changes the minimum collateral, margin, rate, processing charge and repayment information available.
Is your university and master’s course on Canara’s current list?
Canara’s public page cannot confirm this by itself. The Masters Degree page accessed 20 September 2026 requires admission from a select institution, but its list tab did not expose a working list. The older indexed list returned 404. An old file isn’t current approval.
Student should have secured admission from the select institution Canara Bank, Masters Degree scheme
The page also states minimum test scores of SAT 1250, ACT 26, GRE 300 or GMAT 650. It does not say how Canara handles a university test waiver, a course that required none of these tests or an applicant with more than one score. The branch confirmation should cover the course and test rule together.
Before you pay a non-refundable charge, ask Canara to match your admission documents against four details.
| Step | Detail to check | What Canara should confirm |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | University’s exact legal name | Name Canara used for appraisal |
| 2 | Exact campus | Campus accepted under the current list |
| 3 | Master’s course and intake | Course and intake accepted under the route |
| 4 | Test score or university waiver | Canara’s decision, scheme code, collateral band and rate row |
Canara publishes the admission and score conditions, but the page accessed 20 September 2026 did not show a working current foreign-university list or explain waiver handling.
An old list can be a lead for a branch question, but it isn’t current approval. The confirmation should name the university, campus and course rather than merely saying that the institution is listed.
How much collateral and margin does Canara require?
The amount depends on the scheme and the admission category Canara accepts. The Masters Degree loan begins above INR 7.50 lakh and allows collateral coverage from 50% to at least 100%. The general IBA loan can be without collateral through INR 7.50 lakh under its stated conditions, but asks for at least 100% tangible collateral above that amount.
Canara uses merit quota for a seat obtained through an institution’s recognised merit selection rather than a management-paid category. Management quota is Canara’s separate label for a non-merit category. A foreign university may not use either label, so ask Canara which security row applies to your admission.
The Credit Guarantee Fund Scheme for Education Loans, or CGFEL, protects part of the lender’s loss on an eligible IBA-pattern loan through INR 7.50 lakh. It does not clear the student’s debt or promise approval. Need-based finance means Canara works from the eligible course costs it accepts. Project cost is the total of those accepted costs.
Canara describes the Masters security range in direct terms.
Collateral security from Max 100% to Min 50% Canara Bank, Masters Degree scheme
| Published rule | Masters Degree route | General IBA route |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum loan or lower band | Above INR 7.50 lakh | Need-based finance |
| Maximum finance | No published cap with at least 100% collateral, subject to project cost. Up to INR 1 crore below 100% collateral | No fixed public ceiling on the live scheme page |
| Merit-quota security through INR 7.50 lakh | Not applicable to this route | No collateral, subject to CGFEL conditions, with parent or guardian as joint borrower |
| Merit-quota security above INR 7.50 lakh | At least 50% collateral coverage | At least 100% tangible collateral |
| Management-quota security | Not published as a separate rule | At least 50% tangible collateral through INR 4 lakh, and at least 100% above INR 4 lakh |
| Margin | 10% of loan amount | Nil through INR 4 lakh, then 15% for study abroad |
| Margin timing | May be brought year by year when disbursements are made | Not published on the live page |
Canara scheme pages accessed 20 September 2026. A published collateral percentage is not an accepted property value. Legal review, valuation and the sanction decide what security counts.
For the general IBA route above INR 7.50 lakh, Canara states the security condition plainly.
Tangible Collateral security to cover at least 100% Canara Bank, IBA Model scheme
Canara appears on the NCGTC member roster checked 20 September 2026. The current NCGTC FAQ gives 75% guarantee cover to the lender, with no collateral or third-party guarantee under its conditions.
The guarantee doesn’t clear the student’s debt or guarantee approval. It also does not create an unsecured INR 40 lakh Canara loan. The bank still checks the course, borrower, co-borrower, documents and credit record.
What is Canara Bank’s current education-loan interest rate?
Canara’s current Masters floating rates run from 9.25% to 10.1%, depending on collateral coverage. The current Canara benchmark document gives an RLLR of 8% effective 12 September 2026. Check your final rate and APR in the KFS before you accept the loan.
RLLR + published spread = floating interest rate before fees
Canara charges a higher rate when your collateral covers a smaller share of the loan.
| Collateral coverage | RLLR and spread | Floating rate |
|---|---|---|
| At least 100% | 8% + 1.25 percentage points | 9.25% |
| 75% to below 100% | 8% + 1.85 percentage points | 9.85% |
| 50% to below 75% | 8% + 2.10 percentage points | 10.1% |
Canara’s floating education-rate table and RLLR document were checked on 20 September 2026. RLLR is 8% effective 12 September 2026 and may change at a later review.
Canara also publishes fixed rates for the same Masters collateral bands. A fixed-rate takeover means moving the fixed-rate loan to another lender, and its prepayment charge can differ from the floating-loan rule.
| Collateral coverage | Published fixed rate |
|---|---|
| At least 100% | 10.35% |
| 75% to below 100% | 10.6% |
| 50% to below 75% | 10.85% |
Published figures from Canara’s current fixed-rate table, accessed 20 September 2026. They are shown as final published rates, not as additions to the floating table.
The fixed-rate material accessed 20 September 2026 and floating-rate material publish a rate-regime conversion charge of 0.25% of the loan amount, with a minimum of INR 250 plus GST and a maximum of INR 25,000 plus GST. The KFS must say whether switching is available for the offer and when the fee applies.
The general IBA price needs a separate table because Canara’s scheme page says IBA Model while its price table uses the name Vidya Sagar. The bank’s website does not fully map every IBA Model foreign-study sanction to that price name.
| Published general education-loan row | Amount or scope | Floating rate |
|---|---|---|
| Vidya Sagar | Through INR 7.50 lakh | 10% |
| Vidya Sagar | Above INR 7.50 lakh | 9.6% |
| Vidya Sagar, abroad study | Above INR 7.50 lakh | 9.25% |
Canara’s floating-rate table was accessed 20 September 2026. No distinct general-route overseas fixed-rate row is shown. Your KFS must name the scheme and interest rate Canara has approved for you.
The rate table accessed 20 September 2026 states a 0.5% concession for women borrowers. A footnote also describes a concession for servicing interest promptly during the course, but its marker is not attached to the Masters rows. Canara does not say whether these concessions can be combined, so neither is deducted below.
What does an INR 40 lakh Canara Masters loan cost?
An INR 40 lakh requested Masters loan produces different costs at 50% and 100% collateral coverage even when the course, amount and repayment term stay the same. This calculation assumes that the university, course and one published test condition qualify. It uses Canara’s rates checked on 20 September 2026, not a personalised offer.
Using the Masters margin wording literally, an INR 40 lakh loan gives a family margin of INR 4 lakh and an assumed eligible cost of INR 44 lakh. The sanction must show how Canara applies this unusual basis across tuition, living, travel and medical insurance.
For this example, the course lasts 24 months and regular equated monthly instalments, or EMIs, begin 12 months later. It also assumes that Canara releases the full INR 40 lakh on the first day. Canara does not publish a 12-month moratorium for this loan, so that period is only an assumption for the calculation. Interest is paid monthly during all 36 months, followed by 180 regular EMIs.
Monthly interest on a full draw = principal x annual rate / 12
INR 40,00,000 x 10.1% / 12 = about INR 33,667
The EMI figures are reducing-balance calculator results for INR 40 lakh over 180 months at the stated annual rate. A reducing-balance EMI charges each month’s interest on the principal still outstanding.
Modelled household outflow = family margin + 36-month paid interest + regular EMI total + standard processing fee
The excluded property costs include a possible registration charge with the Central Registry of Securitisation Asset Reconstruction and Security Interest, or CERSAI. Canara does not give an applicant-specific CERSAI amount on the Masters page.
The Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication, or SWIFT, carries standardised payment messages between banks. Canara’s general foreign-exchange schedule effective 2 February 2026 lists separate remittance and SWIFT-message charges, but the number that applies depends on the actual draw route.
A real staged draw normally reduces interest because Canara and RBI require interest to start only on the amount actually released. The two main collateral cases show how lower collateral changes the price.
| Loan or household item | 50% to below 75% cover | At least 100% cover |
|---|---|---|
| Requested loan (INR) | 40,00,000 | 40,00,000 |
| Family margin under stated basis (INR) | 4,00,000 | 4,00,000 |
| Assumed eligible cost (INR) | 44,00,000 | 44,00,000 |
| Minimum collateral band on principal (INR) | 20,00,000 | 40,00,000 |
| Floating rate used | 10.1% | 9.25% |
| Monthly interest on full draw (INR) | 33,667 | 30,833 |
| 36-month course-and-assumed-pause interest (INR) | 12,12,000 | 11,10,000 |
| Regular EMI for 180 months (INR) | 43,229 | 41,168 |
| Total of regular EMIs (INR) | 77,81,264 | 74,10,184 |
| Standard processing charge before GST (INR) | 20,000 | 10,000 |
| Temporary charge before GST if the waiver applies by 30 September 2026 (INR) | 10,000 | 5,000 |
| Modelled household outflow before transfer charges and excluded costs (INR) | 94,13,264 | 89,30,184 |
| Borrowing cost above assumed INR 44 lakh eligible cost, using standard fee (INR) | 50,13,264 | 45,30,184 |
| Destination payee and visa-proof status | Not published for the overseas route | Not published for the overseas route |
Independent cost calculation using Canara’s Masters terms and processing caps checked on 20 September 2026. Collateral figures are mathematical band floors, not accepted property valuations. GST, legal, valuation, mortgage, CERSAI, insurance, exchange spread and foreign-bank costs are excluded. The totals also exclude the published INR 750 outward-remittance line and INR 500 ordinary SWIFT-message line because their applicability and the number of chargeable transfers depend on the actual draw route.
With collateral covering 75% to below 100% of the loan, the rate is 9.85% and the estimated EMI is INR 42,618. The other assumptions remain unchanged.
| 75% to below 100% cover item | Calculated amount |
|---|---|
| Minimum collateral band on INR 40 lakh principal | INR 30,00,000 |
| Floating rate | 9.85% |
| Monthly interest on full draw | INR 32,833 |
| 36-month course-and-assumed-pause interest | INR 11,82,000 |
| Regular EMI for 180 months | INR 42,618 |
| Total of regular EMIs | INR 76,71,220 |
| Standard processing charge before GST | INR 20,000 |
| Modelled household outflow before transfer charges and excluded costs | INR 92,73,220 |
| Borrowing cost above assumed INR 44 lakh eligible cost | INR 48,73,220 |
Same assumptions as the main calculation. The temporary processing waiver would reduce the charge to INR 10,000 before GST if it applies by 30 September 2026. The total also excludes the published INR 750 outward-remittance line and INR 500 ordinary SWIFT-message line because their applicability and the number of chargeable transfers depend on the actual draw route.
The 50% to below 75% collateral band adds about INR 4,83,080 to modelled household outflow compared with the at-least-100% band. That difference contains about INR 1,02,000 of added course-and-assumed-pause interest, INR 3,71,080 of added regular EMI payments and INR 10,000 of added standard processing charge.
This isn’t a forecast. RLLR can reset, actual draws may be staged, and the sanction may use a different study-interest treatment. If unpaid interest is added to principal, the later EMI will be higher than the calculation shown here.
The payment destination remains a real cost and timing issue. For a student using the German study route, the official blocked-account requirement remains separate from the loan sanction. Canara does not publish a promise to pay a blocked-account provider or to release money before the visa decision.
Which fees and transfer costs are not included in Canara’s interest rate?
The interest rate is only one part of the household cost. Canara’s Masters page accessed 20 September 2026 publishes the processing caps and temporary waiver. Legal, valuation, mortgage, insurance and foreign-exchange costs are not fully priced for an individual overseas loan.
A correspondent bank helps carry an international transfer between the sending and receiving banks. Its charge, and any amount deducted by the recipient’s bank, can leave the university or provider with less than Canara sends.
| Cost | Published amount or rule on 20 September 2026 | Document to obtain |
|---|---|---|
| Masters processing, at least 100% collateral | 0.5% of sanction, capped at INR 10,000 before GST | KFS and fee receipt |
| Masters processing, below 100% collateral | 0.5% of sanction, capped at INR 20,000 before GST | KFS and fee receipt |
| Temporary Masters waiver | 50% waiver from 1 July to 30 September 2026 | Dated written confirmation before payment |
| General IBA processing and refund | Not published on the live scheme page | Written fee and refund quote |
| Legal, valuation, mortgage and CERSAI | Applicant-specific total not published | Third-party quote, invoice and KFS disclosure |
| Life or credit insurance | Not published as compulsory for these overseas routes | Policy, consent, premium and cancellation terms |
| Medical insurance | Eligible expense if applicable, price not published | Insurer quote and sanction treatment |
| Individual outward remittance | INR 750 plus applicable costs | Foreign-exchange quote |
| Ordinary customer-initiated SWIFT message | INR 500 plus applicable GST and other costs | Foreign-exchange quote and debit advice |
| Rate-regime conversion | 0.25% of loan, INR 250 minimum and INR 25,000 maximum, plus GST | KFS and switch request terms |
| Penal charge above INR 2 lakh | 2% a year on amount in default for actual default days | KFS and penal-charge policy |
| Failed linked-account repayment debit | INR 100 plus GST where the current Canara notice applies | Applicable notice and account entry |
Figures above use the Canara Masters scheme, penal-charge policy and forex schedule checked on 20 September 2026. Exchange spread, correspondent-bank cost and recipient-bank deduction can remain outside the listed rupee fees.
Under Canara’s penal-charge policy updated 12 December 2025, the education-loan charge above INR 2 lakh applies to the defaulted amount for the actual default days. A penal charge is not extra penal interest, and the charge itself cannot be added to principal for further interest.
The foreign-currency amount received can differ from the INR amount debited. Ask the branch for a complete transfer quote.
- It should show the exchange rate and Canara’s exchange spread.
- It should show the Canara remittance fee and SWIFT-message fee.
- It should state any correspondent-bank or recipient-bank deduction.
- It should say who must pay if the recipient receives less than the amount due.
Who can apply, and what documents will Canara ask for?
You can apply for the Masters Degree loan if you are an Indian citizen with a valid passport, an eligible admit from a select university and one of Canara’s required test scores. The general IBA page also covers a non-resident Indian, or NRI, student who holds a valid Indian passport for an eligible foreign course.
Canara’s public overseas pages give no numeric CIBIL cut-off, co-applicant income floor or general marks percentage. That absence does not remove credit appraisal. Canara’s Fair Practices Code accessed 20 September 2026 says the bank conducts creditworthiness due diligence even where security and margin are stipulated.
Know-your-customer, or KYC, documents prove identity and address. The Permanent Account Number, or PAN, is the Indian tax identifier Canara asks for. The document pack has four parts.
| Document group | Documents Canara publishes | What it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Student | Application, photographs, KYC, age proof, PAN, address proof and valid passport | Identity, residence and overseas travel status |
| Academic and course | Admission proof, course-expense schedule, last qualifying marksheet and applicable SAT, ACT, GRE or GMAT score | Course eligibility and requested cost |
| Co-borrower or guarantor | KYC, income proof, asset evidence and any further bank-required records | Joint obligation and repayment assessment |
| Collateral owner and property | Land records, title and valuation material as requested | Ownership, legal acceptability and accepted security value |
Canara’s current download centre still serves the NF-1011 education-loan application dated April 2019. It asks for cost, family source, scholarship, expected earnings and security details. Its statement that sanctioned credit should be used within six months is an older form term, so the current sanction must state the validity for the applicant’s course and intake.
The general IBA page updated 11 September 2026 permits application at a branch near the parents’ home or near the educational institution. The Masters page does not publish one universal portal, designated branch or sanction time in days. The acknowledgement should name the office handling the file, complete-document date, missing records and decision timeframe.
How do sanction, disbursement and each later draw work?
A Canara sanction is approval with conditions, not money already sent abroad. The first transfer can happen only after the required security, margin, documents and recipient are accepted. Later transfers may need a new invoice and proof that the student remains enrolled, as specified in the sanction.
An approved beneficiary is the person or organisation Canara has agreed to pay. A value date is the effective date Canara assigns to the transfer or credit. The sequence below does not insert a turnaround time that Canara hasn’t published.
| Step | What the family provides or receives | What happens next |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Complete application and written acknowledgement | Owning office, missing-document list and stated decision timeframe |
| 2 | Credit appraisal and written sanction | Approved limit, scheme, rate, security and conditions |
| 3 | Security completion, applicable margin and other pre-draw conditions | File becomes eligible for a draw request |
| 4 | Invoice, demand, approved beneficiary and required evidence | First draw considered |
| 5 | Form A2 and foreign-exchange quote | Purpose, beneficiary, exchange rate and charges recorded |
| 6 | SWIFT or other payment record and overseas receipt | Amount and value date matched to the loan statement |
| 7 | New demand, applicable margin and proof that the student remains enrolled | Later draw considered under sanction conditions |
Canara’s Masters page says only that the 10% margin may be brought year by year when disbursements are made. It does not publish the documents, academic evidence, payee or service time for each later draw. The IBA page publishes the percentage but not the same margin timing.
Track two timelines separately. The first runs from Canara’s acknowledgement of your complete application to sanction. The second runs from completion of the sanction conditions to receipt of the money by the approved overseas beneficiary. A fast sanction can still miss a university or visa deadline if the second set of dates is absent.
Interest begins with the actual amount and date released, not the approved limit. Canara states this directly in its Fair Practices Code.
Interest shall be charged from the date of actual disbursement Canara Bank, Fair Practices Code
The RBI circular dated 29 April 2024 also identifies interest from sanction or agreement instead of actual disbursement as an unfair practice. A draw ledger should show the request date, amount, family margin, value date, foreign-currency amount and account-statement entry.
Will Canara send money to a university, GIC or blocked account?
Canara’s website does not state whether it will pay tuition, living costs, a Canadian GIC or a German blocked account to the recipient you choose. A Canadian Guaranteed Investment Certificate, or GIC, is a deposit that releases living funds under its terms. A German blocked account holds living funds and limits how much the student can withdraw each month.
The Canara Form A2 accessed 20 September 2026 asks for the approved beneficiary’s name, address and bank details. An IBAN, Australian BSB and Canadian transit code are different recipient-bank identifiers supplied by the payee. The authorised dealer, which is the RBI-authorised bank handling the foreign exchange, chooses the remittance purpose from the payment documents. Completing Form A2 does not guarantee that the loan permits that beneficiary.
Each destination asks for different evidence that the money exists and can be used. The current government rule and Canara’s written answer should identify the recipient and release date.
| Destination | Official evidence rule | What to ask Canara |
|---|---|---|
| USA | Form I-20 supports the student’s status and funding evidence, and the visa officer may ask how all study and living costs will be paid | Ask whether Canara can issue or release the evidence your school needs before Form I-20 |
| UK | The regulated lender letter must state the loan amount, release condition and when the money becomes available | Give the UK wording to Canara before it prepares the letter |
| Canada | Bank education-loan proof is accepted, but the student must also show that later study costs can still be paid | Ask whether Canara will pay the chosen GIC provider and document later-year availability |
| Germany | The education loan is additional to the withdrawal-limited blocked account unless another accepted funding route applies | Ask whether Canara will pay the chosen blocked-account provider before the visa deadline |
| Australia | A financial-institution loan can be evidence, while disbursement is stronger proof that the student can actually use the money | Ask what Canara can release before the visa decision and what proof it will issue |
Destination government pages and Canara material were checked on 20 September 2026. Visa rules can change, and the current authority page should be matched to the applicant’s filing date.
Before you rely on the sanction for a university or visa deadline, ask Canara to confirm who it will pay and when. The written reply should include the amount, documents, release date, exchange quote and refund process.
Canara’s public overseas material does not say when interest stops during a returned transfer, how exchange gain or loss is posted or whether returned money restores the undrawn limit. The original transfer advice, provider refund record, incoming-credit reference and revised loan statement are therefore essential.
Which government, tax and TCS rules apply to a Canara abroad loan?
Government guarantee and subsidy labels do not turn a large foreign-study loan into a subsidised unsecured loan. PM Vidyalaxmi scheme benefits and the central domestic interest-subsidy routes do not cover a foreign university. The application portal doesn’t change those limits.
The PIB backgrounder dated 29 July 2026 expressly limits PM Vidyalaxmi benefits to designated institutions in India and excludes foreign institutions. Using an application portal does not extend the government scheme overseas.
For current tax years, section 129 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 replaces the old section 80E label. The enacted Income-tax Act, 2025 allows qualifying interest actually paid for up to eight tax years in total, without a stated rupee cap. The claimant must be the eligible person paying interest for their own or a statutory relative’s higher education, and the lender and loan must qualify. Section 129 is unavailable under the default new tax regime. Ask a tax professional to check these points for your family.
Tax collected at source, or TCS, is collected on specified remittances and later appears as a tax credit. It is not Canara loan interest. Under section 394(4)(b) of the Income-tax Act, 2025, a qualifying education remittance funded from a Canara Bank education loan is exempt from TCS. The sanction, draw and authorised-dealer documents establish that the remittance used loan funding.
A self-funded education remittance is different. The Finance Act, 2026 sets 2% TCS on the amount above INR 10 lakh from 1 April 2026 for self-funded education remittance under the stated framework.
Self-funded TCS example = (INR 25,00,000 minus INR 10,00,000) x 2% = INR 30,000
The example assumes no earlier remittance has used the annual threshold. When a payment combines Canara-loan money and family money, the authorised dealer should record the two funding sources separately.
What should you watch out for before accepting Canara’s offer?
Before accepting the offer, check the seven issues below in Canara’s current documents. Do not rely on an oral assurance when the answer affects your property, upfront cash or visa deadline. A verbal answer isn’t enough when money or property is at risk.
| Issue | What can go wrong | Document to check |
|---|---|---|
| Vidya Turant scope | India-only collateral-free limits are copied into an abroad comparison | Written overseas scheme code |
| Foreign university list | An old or dead list is treated as current course approval | Dated confirmation naming university, campus, course and intake |
| Property acceptance | Market value is treated as accepted collateral before legal review and valuation | Title checklist, legal opinion, valuation and sanction |
| Charges | A temporary waiver is treated as permanent or an unpublished cost is treated as nil | Personalised KFS, written quote and invoices |
| Visa payment | Sanction is treated as a transfer without an approved payee and draw date | Draw instruction naming beneficiary and release conditions |
| Masters repayment pause | The IBA moratorium is assumed to apply to a Masters offer whose public page does not show the length | KFS and amortisation schedule |
| Fixed-rate prepayment | A broad no-prepayment statement is applied to a fixed-rate takeover without checking current policy | KFS and foreclosure terms |
Three protections are already clear. The applicant is entitled to a personalised KFS with APR, charges and an amortisation schedule. Interest must start from actual disbursement. For a qualifying floating-rate individual non-business loan sanctioned or renewed from 1 January 2026, the RBI conduct Directions bar part-prepayment and full-prepayment charges without a lock-in, which is a minimum period during which early closure would otherwise be restricted or charged.
After full repayment or settlement, Canara’s Fair Practices Code and the RBI property-document direction dated 13 September 2023 require original property documents and registered-charge removal within 30 days. RBI provides INR 5,000 for each day of delay attributable to the lender.
The calculator can compare a rate, fee and EMI for a chosen amount. It cannot tell you whether Canara will accept your university or property, who the bank will pay, or how long your moratorium will be.
What should Canara confirm in writing before you pay?
Send one written request that covers your admission, collateral, interest rate, charges and overseas payment. The twelve questions below are short enough to copy into an email or branch letter. This creates one dated answer against every material family commitment.
- Which exact scheme code and rate-table row will Canara use?
- Is the university, campus, course and intake eligible under the current Masters list?
- How will Canara treat a university test waiver or a course that required no listed test?
- Which property type and owner are acceptable, what valuation basis applies and how much collateral coverage is required?
- How is margin calculated, and when is it due for the first and later draws?
- What are the current RLLR, spread, reset date and fixed-rate switch terms?
- What are the APR and every bank, legal, valuation, insurance, registry and remittance charge?
- What are the moratorium length, study-interest method, first EMI date and repayment schedule?
- Which office owns the complete file, what is missing and what dates apply to the decision, first draw and later draws?
- Which beneficiary can receive tuition, living-cost, GIC or blocked-account money?
- How will a visa refusal, course change or overseas refund be credited to the loan?
- Which account, KYC update and remittance instruction apply after the student becomes non-resident?
Keep copies of the KFS, sanction, fee quote, property requirements, each draw instruction and the loan statement. If Canara’s published rule and the branch response differ, its 2026-27 grievance policy provides a complaint reference and escalation process. A complaint can address a service or disclosure failure, but it cannot create credit approval where sanction conditions are not met.
- Before paying a property-related charge, obtain a dated Canara reply naming the university, campus, course, scheme and collateral band.
- Under the fixed assumptions used here, the 50% to below 75% collateral band costs about INR 4,83,080 more than the at-least-100% band.
- Track sanction and overseas receipt as separate timelines because the approved recipient and draw date can remain open after credit approval.
Frequently asked questions
Does Canara Bank give an education loan for study abroad?
Yes. Canara publishes a secured Masters Degree option for qualifying master’s study at select foreign universities and a general Indian Banks’ Association Model option for other eligible foreign courses. The applicant must first confirm the current scheme, course, security and rate in writing.
Does Canara Vidya Turant cover study abroad?
No. Canara’s current Vidya Turant FAQ says it does not cover study abroad. Its INR 30 lakh, INR 40 lakh and INR 50 lakh category limits, collateral-free terms and nil margin apply to mapped premier institutions in India. A foreign admit must be tested against another Canara route.
What is Canara Bank’s current education-loan rate for abroad?
For the Masters route, Canara published floating rates of 9.25%, 9.85% and 10.1% across its three collateral bands on 20 September 2026, using an 8% RLLR. The general price table also showed a 9.25% Vidya Sagar abroad row above INR 7.50 lakh. Your KFS controls the final rate.
Can Canara give an abroad education loan without collateral?
Yes, through INR 7.50 lakh under the general IBA route for a merit-quota seat, meaning admission through recognised merit selection. CGFEL can protect part of Canara’s loss but does not clear your debt. Above INR 7.50 lakh, the general route requires at least 100% tangible collateral.
What is the margin on a Canara Bank overseas education loan?
The Masters page states 10% of the loan amount and permits that margin year by year as disbursements occur. The general IBA page states nil margin through INR 4 lakh and 15% for study abroad above INR 4 lakh. The sanction should show the rupee amount, eligible cost heads and timing for each draw.
What is the moratorium on Canara’s Masters Degree loan?
Canara’s live Masters page says regular repayment can run for up to 15 years excluding moratorium, but it does not publish the moratorium length or study-interest method. Do not assume that the IBA moratorium applies to the Masters route. The personalised KFS and amortisation schedule must show the approved dates and amounts.
Can Canara fund a German blocked account or Canadian GIC?
Canara’s website does not promise either payment. A German blocked account limits monthly withdrawals from deposited living funds, while a Canadian Guaranteed Investment Certificate releases living funds under its terms. Ask Canara to name the approved provider, amount, release date, margin and refund process before relying on the loan for a visa.
