An HDFC education loan for abroad may not be a loan from HDFC Bank Limited. Before comparing any rate or paying a fee, match the legal lender’s name across the Key Facts Statement, sanction letter and agreement. The bank’s foreign-education page names Credila Financial Services Limited as lender, while separate HDFC Bank forms allow an international-study application without giving a priced foreign offer.
A tranche is one instalment of the sanctioned loan released for a particular expense. Even an INR 40 lakh sanction can be unusable when the documents name different companies or the approved recipient cannot receive the first tranche.
Is an HDFC education loan for abroad from HDFC Bank or Credila?
The HDFC Bank foreign-education page does not prove that HDFC Bank Limited will be your lender. It assigns the loan and credit decision to Credila Financial Services Limited, while separate bank forms allow an HDFC Bank loan. The KFS, sanction letter and agreement must name the same legal lender before you compare terms.
The legal lender is the regulated company named as creditor in the signed documents. A KFS, or Key Facts Statement, gives the price, charges and repayment schedule in RBI’s standard format. The sanction letter gives conditional approval, while the agreement records the obligations accepted by the borrowers and lender.
RBI lists HDFC Bank Limited as a scheduled private sector bank. An NBFC is a non-bank finance company regulated by RBI. Credila’s 2024-25 annual report identifies Credila Financial Services Limited as a separate RBI-registered, non-deposit-taking NBFC in the Middle Layer.
The foreign-education page states who lends through the HDFC website.
All Education Loans from Credila Financial Services Limited. Credit at sole discretion of Credila Financial Services Limited. HDFC Bank, foreign education
The historic HDFC Credila name does not mean common ownership today. HDFC Bank’s sale-completion filing dated 19 March 2024 records the change.
HDFC Credila Financial Services Limited has ceased to be a subsidiary of the Bank with effect from March 19, 2024. HDFC Bank, regulatory filing
The document named on a page decides how much weight the family can place on it. A generic HDFC Bank form shows that an overseas application is possible, but only a filled KFS and sanction give that family’s price and conditions.
| Reader sees | Legal entity or role | What the documents show | What they do not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDFC Bank Limited documents | HDFC Bank Limited may lend under these forms | Application and agreement include international study | A bank-issued foreign rate or approved amount for this applicant |
| HDFC Bank foreign page | Credila terms presented on the bank’s website | The page assigns lending and credit to Credila | An HDFC Bank Limited loan offer |
| Credila direct | Credila Financial Services Limited as NBFC lender | Credila’s rate page, policy and annual report | The rate or fee for an application made elsewhere |
Documents were checked on 21 September 2026. The lender named in a family’s signed KFS, sanction and agreement controls its offer.
What terms are published for each HDFC and Credila route?
Terms shown on HDFC Bank’s foreign-education page belong to Credila, while Credila direct publishes a separate set. HDFC Bank Limited’s generic forms allow an international-study application but don’t give a priced foreign offer. Compare only proposals that name the lender and give the rate, fee, ceiling and repayment period for that application.
A benchmark is the reference rate used for a floating loan, while the spread is the borrower-specific addition. CBLR means Credila Benchmark Lending Rate. Credila sets the spread through underwriting, which is the lender’s approval and risk assessment, under its interest-rate policy. CBLR is not an HDFC Bank benchmark.
A secured loan is backed by collateral that the lender accepts. Both advertised secured rates belong to Credila, but they appear on different application pages and aren’t offers made to the same borrower. A moratorium is the period when some payments are postponed under the signed schedule. APR is the annual percentage rate, which shows the annual cost of credit. Margin is the share of lender-approved cost that must come from the household.
| Application, checked 21 September 2026 | Named lender | Figures shown on the page | What remains unclear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credila through HDFC Bank’s website | Credila Financial Services Limited | 9.25% secured starting rate, CBLR plus spread and up to 14 years including moratorium; funds go directly to the institution according to its fee schedule | Unsecured ceiling of INR 45 lakh or INR 75 lakh, fee of 1.5% or up to 1%, and conflicting institution counts |
| Credila direct | Credila Financial Services Limited | 9.95% secured starting rate and 1.25% fee, plus 11.25% unsecured starting rate | The CBLR value is not shown, while tenure copy differs between summary and programme text |
| HDFC Bank Limited forms | HDFC Bank Limited | Generic documents support international study, one or more tranches and an electronic overseas bank transfer, described as a telegraphic transfer | No foreign KFS, rate, APR, ceiling, margin, fee or filled repayment term found |
Figures were checked on 21 September 2026. The starting rates come from different applications and may change after the lender’s risk assessment.
The HDFC website’s own pages conflict in ways that a family cannot safely resolve by choosing the more attractive line.
| Issue | What the pages say | What the family should use |
|---|---|---|
| Credit decision | Main page assigns loans to Credila, while some subpage disclaimers mention HDFC Bank discretion | The legal lender on the KFS |
| Unsecured ceiling | INR 75 lakh in one block and INR 45 lakh in the eligibility FAQ | State the conflict, not one ceiling |
| Channel reach | 5,200 institutions in 64 countries versus 2,100 universities in 35 or more countries | Neither count proves that one campus and course qualify |
| Channel fee | 1.5% plus tax in the table versus up to 1% or INR 1,000 minimum in the FAQ | The fee in rupees on the KFS |
| Credila direct tenure | Up to 15 years in summary versus 15 years for postgraduate and 20 years for undergraduate text | Use the filled repayment schedule |
| HDFC Bank foreign pricing | Generic international forms exist, but the bank’s rate card is labelled Indian Education | No price until HDFC Bank issues a foreign KFS |
HDFC Bank and Credila pages were checked on 21 September 2026. The signed KFS and sanction control the borrower’s terms.
Before comparing the 9.25% and 9.95% figures, ask each lender for the secured status, CBLR value, spread, APR and repayment schedule for the same loan amount and course. HDFC Bank Limited stays outside that price comparison until it supplies a foreign KFS.
Can you get the HDFC website loan without collateral?
Collateral-free funding may be possible through Credila, but the HDFC website contradicts itself on whether the unsecured ceiling is INR 45 lakh or INR 75 lakh. Credila direct says the amount depends on eligibility. Neither application publishes a universal income, credit-score or university-rank cut-off, so INR 40 lakh is not automatic approval.
Collateral is property or another accepted asset pledged for the loan. An unsecured loan has no pledged asset, but it still goes through the lender’s risk assessment. A co-applicant is the second borrower who shares repayment responsibility. A CIBIL score is one Indian credit-bureau score used in that assessment.
LTV, or loan-to-value ratio, is the share of lender-accepted property value that the lender is willing to fund. The Credila offer through HDFC Bank’s website advertises funding up to 65% of property market value. A valuation haircut means the lender counts less than the asset’s stated value after legal and technical checks.
Margin is the part of the approved cost that the family pays. Security is only one part of access. Both Credila applications also examine admission, course, institution, academics, co-applicant strength, income records and repayment ability.
| Question | Credila through HDFC Bank’s website | Credila direct | Answer needed in the signed offer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Is a co-applicant required? | Indian co-applicant and Indian bank account stated | Mandatory co-applicant stated | Accepted relationship, income documents and liability |
| Can INR 40 lakh be unsecured? | Below both conflicting website ceilings, but still assessed | Amount depends on eligibility | Secured or unsecured classification in KFS |
| Is margin zero? | Up to 100% of eligible costs | No margin and up to 100% eligible-cost copy | Approved cost sheet and family contribution by expense |
| What collateral can work? | Property and selected financial assets are listed | Property and fixed deposits are listed | Accepted asset, legal check, valuation and haircut |
Eligibility wording was checked on 21 September 2026. The sanction and KFS give the answer for an individual application.
KYC means Know Your Customer identity and address checks. The two application pages ask for different periods of bank statements, so a family shouldn’t assume that one upload set covers both.
| Check | Credila through HDFC Bank’s website | Credila direct |
|---|---|---|
| Student and admission | Indian citizen with confirmed admission before disbursement | Indian citizen, at least 16 years old at disbursement, with valid admission |
| Co-applicant | Indian citizen with an Indian cheque-writing bank account | Parent, sibling, spouse or guardian may be considered |
| Core records | KYC, photographs, academic and test records, admission letter and cost | KYC, academic records, admission and cost records |
| Income and banking records | Eight months of bank statements and income proof | Six months of bank statements and category-specific income proof |
| Security records | Property or accepted financial-asset records where applicable | Registered sale deed, property-tax receipt and approved plan or occupation certificate where applicable |
Document pages were checked on 21 September 2026. Credila’s no-income co-applicant category is a document path, not approval without a co-applicant or repayment source.
A debt-service ratio is the share of income already committed to loan payments. Neither Credila application gives one universal CIBIL score, income floor, debt-service ratio or university-rank cut-off. A no-income document category doesn’t remove the lender’s approval and risk assessment.
An INR 40 lakh request sitting below both disputed website ceilings can still be declined or approved for a smaller amount. The lender can assess whether the course cost is reasonable, whether the co-applicant can carry the obligation and whether the proposed institution fits its policy. For a secured case, the accepted property value can also be lower than the family’s estimate after legal and technical review.
Minimum property value at a stated 65% maximum LTV = required secured loan / 0.65
For an INR 40 lakh secured loan, INR 40,00,000 divided by 0.65 equals INR 61,53,846, or about INR 61.54 lakh. This is a mathematical floor at the advertised maximum LTV, not a promise that the lender’s valuer will accept that value.
What would an INR 40 lakh education loan cost?
An INR 40 lakh offer can cost very different amounts even when the family borrows the same sum. The model holds disbursement timing, unpaid study-period interest and a ten-year repayment term constant, then applies each Credila application’s dated starting rate and fee. HDFC Bank Limited remains unpriced because no foreign rate card was found.
This comparison uses INR 20 lakh disbursed at month 0 and another INR 20 lakh at month 12. EMI begins at month 36 and runs for 120 months. The family pays no interest during study, so simple interest for 36 months on the first tranche and 24 months on the second is added to the balance used for EMI.
The starting annual rate is held unchanged only to make the rows comparable. Actual floating rates reset. Fee GST is modelled at 18% under CBIC’s financial-services rate table. Insurance, legal work, valuation, stamp duty and foreign-exchange spread are excluded. Correspondent deductions are charges an intermediary bank may take before the overseas recipient gets the money, and they are also excluded.
CERSAI is the Central Registry of Securitisation Asset Reconstruction and Security Interest of India. The separate CERSAI filing charge records a security interest in that registry. The model excludes the filing charge because no common case-specific amount was published.
Pre-EMI interest = sum of each disbursed tranche x annual rate x months outstanding / 12
EMI-start principal = INR 40,00,000 + pre-EMI interest
Monthly EMI = P x r x (1 + r)n / ((1 + r)n minus 1)
In the EMI formula, P is the balance when EMI starts, r is the annual rate divided by 12 and n is 120 monthly instalments.
| Application and evidence date | Starting rate and fee (%) | Interest before EMI and monthly EMI (INR) | Total paid in this example (INR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDFC Bank Limited foreign offer | No priced offer found | Not computable | Not computable |
| Credila through HDFC Bank’s website, secured, 21 September 2026 | 9.25%; fee 1.5% plus GST | 9,25,000; 63,056 | 120 EMIs plus fee and GST, 76,37,534 |
| Credila direct, secured, 21 September 2026 | 9.95%; fee 1.25% plus GST | 9,95,000; 65,871 | 120 EMIs plus fee and GST, 79,63,528 |
| Credila direct, unsecured, 21 September 2026 | 11.25%; fee 1.25% plus GST | 11,25,000; 71,324 | 120 EMIs plus fee and GST, 86,17,890 |
This example uses two equal tranches, simple interest before EMI, no study-period payment and an unchanged starting rate. Values are rounded to the nearest rupee and aren’t personalised offers.
The HDFC website and Credila direct secured rows differ by INR 2,815 a month in EMI and INR 3,25,994 in the displayed totals. The direct secured and unsecured rows differ by INR 5,453 a month and INR 6,54,362 in the displayed totals. These are results of the stated assumptions, not savings promised to a borrower.
Which HDFC channel and Credila charges need to be priced?
On INR 40 lakh, the HDFC website fee wordings and Credila direct wording produce INR 70,800, INR 47,200 or INR 59,000 after modelled GST. Those figures come from different applications, so they don’t identify the cheaper offer. The KFS must disclose lender and recovered third-party costs, while case-specific amounts need separate confirmation.
An origination fee is the processing fee charged for setting up the loan when the lender uses the two terms for the same charge. The percentage here is applied to the sanctioned amount.
Converting each percentage into rupees makes the HDFC website’s fee conflict visible before the family pays.
| Fee wording on the page | Fee before GST (INR) | GST at 18% (INR) | Fee with GST (INR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDFC website Credila table at 1.5% | 60,000 | 10,800 | 70,800 |
| HDFC website FAQ alternative at 1% | 40,000 | 7,200 | 47,200 |
| Credila direct at 1.25% | 50,000 | 9,000 | 59,000 |
The lender pages and CBIC GST table were checked on 21 September 2026. The GST calculation is an illustration and the signed KFS must give the payable amount.
The HDFC website table and its same-page FAQ differ by INR 23,600 after modelled GST. The HDFC website table and Credila direct page differ by INR 11,800. Neither difference is a saving because the figures aren’t offers made to the same borrower.
The HDFC website fee schedule also charges for late or dishonoured payments, manual collection, a changed repayment instruction, account updates, CERSAI filing and actual legal expenses. Credila’s direct most important terms and conditions adds spread conversion, collateral swaps, stamp duty and recovery expenses.
Ask separately about insurance, valuation, property legal work, the foreign-exchange spread, the remitting bank’s fee and intermediary-bank charges. For each amount, the lender should say who receives it and whether it is paid now or added to the loan.
RBI’s APR method includes interest and applicable charges when it measures the annual cost of credit.
APR is the annual cost of credit to the borrower. Reserve Bank of India, KFS for loans and advances
A charge recovered through the lender belongs in the KFS treatment described by RBI. A later charge that wasn’t disclosed cannot simply be added without the borrower’s explicit consent under the same rule.
How do moratorium, rate resets and prepayment work?
Moratorium postpones some payments, not the cost of borrowing. Capitalisation means adding unpaid interest to the balance used for later EMI calculation. A floating benchmark can change EMI or tenure. RBI requires reset choices and bars prepayment charges on qualifying floating individual non-business loans sanctioned or renewed from 1 January 2026.
A PMII, or partial monthly interest instalment, is the stated part of monthly interest that the family pays during study. Credila’s MITC means its most important terms and conditions. The documents reviewed contain several possible structures, but they don’t promise that every applicant can choose freely among all of them.
The amount paid during study decides how much unpaid interest can be added before regular EMI begins.
| Structure and supporting source | Family pays now | What can happen at EMI start | Written field to request |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full EMI in Credila MITC | Principal and interest | Lowest remaining balance among these paths | EMI schedule from first disbursement |
| Full monthly interest in Credila MITC | Interest only | Disbursed principal stays broadly unchanged if paid on time | Monthly interest amount and due date |
| PMII in Credila MITC | A stated part of interest | Unpaid interest may be added under the schedule | PMII amount and capitalisation method |
| No study-period payment in HDFC Bank generic agreement | Nothing during the period | Accrued interest can raise EMI-start principal | Total accrued interest and first EMI principal |
These are structures found across a Credila MITC and HDFC Bank’s generic agreement. They aren’t a common menu promised on every offer.
An amortisation schedule is the month-by-month split of each payment between principal and interest. The filled KFS and amortisation schedule should identify the actual study-period payment, the method used to add unpaid interest and the first EMI balance.
These payment paths affect cash flow at two different times. Paying interest during study needs monthly family cash but keeps the later balance lower. Paying nothing during study leaves more cash available now but can create a much larger EMI-start principal. The signed schedule should therefore show both the amount due during study and the amount carried into repayment.
CBLR is Credila’s benchmark only. Under RBI’s floating-rate reset rule, the lender must explain the possible effect on EMI or tenure and provide applicable choices such as a higher EMI, a longer tenure, a combination or prepayment. The quarterly statement should show principal, interest, EMI, remaining instalments and annualised rate.
For qualifying floating-rate loans to individuals for non-business purposes, RBI’s 2025 directions apply to loans sanctioned or renewed from 1 January 2026. RBI calls a lender covered by the direction a regulated entity, or RE.
an RE shall not levy pre-payment charges Reserve Bank of India, Pre-payment Charges on Loans Directions, 2025
The legal protection depends on the loan’s rate type and purpose. A fixed or hybrid offer needs to be read from its own KFS and agreement.
Does a sanction mean the money can be sent abroad?
No, a sanction letter gives conditional approval and does not mean the university has received money. The borrower must complete every condition and request a tranche before an authorised dealer, the bank processing the foreign remittance, can transfer funds. Interest should start only on each amount actually disbursed, so sanction and disbursement dates remain separate.
LRS means the Liberalised Remittance Scheme for resident individuals. An authorised dealer is normally the bank processing the foreign-exchange transfer. Form A2 is the remittance declaration that records purpose, currency and beneficiary. An IBAN is an International Bank Account Number and SWIFT is a bank-identification code used for an international transfer. The value date is the date the transfer is treated as effective.
The lender approves the release, but the authorised dealer performs the foreign-exchange transfer. The overseas recipient then has to receive and allocate the money.
| Step | What the borrower supplies | What the lender or bank does | Proof to retain |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Final sanction acceptance and signed KFS or agreement | Confirms lender, conditions and available amount | Signed document set |
| 2 | Security, margin, invoice, academic and visa records required by the sanction | Marks release conditions complete | Written completion confirmation |
| 3 | Tranche request with purpose, currency, beneficiary, account or IBAN and SWIFT | Approves amount and payee | Accepted request and foreign-exchange quote |
| 4 | Permanent Account Number (PAN) and Form A2 declarations | Authorised dealer executes the education remittance | SWIFT transfer confirmation and value date |
| 5 | Transfer reference sent to the recipient | University or account provider allocates funds | Receipt and updated fee statement |
The sequence uses RBI LRS records, HDFC Bank’s Form A2 and the bank’s generic education-loan agreement checked on 21 September 2026.
The general LRS limit is USD 250,000 per resident individual per financial year. Study remittance can exceed that amount against the institution’s estimate, subject to the authorised dealer’s documents. HDFC Bank’s agreement supports a foreign-currency demand draft and an electronic overseas bank transfer, called a telegraphic transfer, but it doesn’t promise every payee or deadline.
RBI has identified charging before money actually moves as an unfair practice.
Charging of interest from the date of sanction of loan or date of execution of loan agreement and not from the date of actual disbursement Reserve Bank of India, fair interest circular
For a staged course fee, the statement should start interest separately on each actual draw and not on the undrawn sanction.
Will the sanction work for your study destination?
A sanction is useful only when its wording and payment route satisfy the destination’s evidence rule. The UK tests the loan letter, Germany may require blocked-account funding, Canada and Australia test available resources, and a US school evaluates finances before issuing Form I-20. The lender must support the required payee and timing.
A loan letter that works for one destination may fail another destination’s evidence or payment test.
| Destination | Official evidence test | What the loan must support | Country guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK | Loan letter no more than 6 months old, naming the student and amount, from an acceptable regulated lender | Required release wording and availability before the course starts | Study in the UK |
| Canada | First-year tuition, living and transport, plus an explanation for the full programme | A bank loan is an official example, so a Credila NBFC borrower may need additional evidence | Study in Canada |
| Germany | Blocked account of at least EUR 11,904 for 2026, commitment or scholarship route | Payment to the named blocked-account provider when that route is used | Study in Germany |
| Australia | A loan with a financial institution and AUD 29,710 living amount | Confirmation that the named lender and genuinely available funds meet the instrument | Study in Australia |
| US | School checks financial ability before Form I-20 and the consular officer may ask about all education, living and travel costs | School-accepted sanction format matched to its estimated costs | Study in the USA |
Government pages were checked on 21 September 2026. Money figures and evidence rules can change and need a fresh check before filing.
The UK wording can conflict directly with a lender’s unresolved release conditions.
confirms there are no conditions on the release of the loan, other than a successful application to study UK Government, financial evidence guidance
Germany’s official portal states its current blocked-account figure plainly.
you can set up a blocked account in Germany with a minimum amount of €11,904 (as of 2026) German Federal Government, study requirements
For the US, the school checks finances before it issues Form I-20. The Department of Homeland Security sample form records estimated costs and student funding.
You must also provide evidence of support for tuition and fees and living expenses while you are in the United States. US Department of Homeland Security, sample Form I-20
How do TCS and the education-loan tax deduction work?
From 1 April 2026, a self-funded education remittance above the INR 10 lakh LRS threshold attracts 2% TCS on the excess, while a qualifying education-loan remittance is excluded. TCS is a tax collection and immediate cash-flow item, not a lender fee. Section 129’s interest deduction is available only under the old tax regime.
TCS means tax collected at source. The authorised dealer collects it when the law applies to the remittance. For one resident remitter sending INR 40 lakh in one tax year with no earlier LRS remittance that year, the self-funded calculation is visible below.
Self-funded education TCS = (INR 40,00,000 minus INR 10,00,000) x 2% = INR 60,000
| Funding source for INR 40 lakh education remittance | Amount above INR 10 lakh (INR) | TCS rate | TCS collected (INR) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Family’s own funds | 30,00,000 | 2% | 60,000 |
| Qualifying loan from a section 129 financial institution | Not applicable | Excluded | 0 |
| Credila loan and former-name notification mapping | Unresolved until the authorised dealer confirms the notification and current legal name | Unmodelled | Unmodelled |
The table applies the Income-tax Act, 2025 as amended by the Finance Act, 2026, effective 1 April 2026. It assumes one resident remitter and no earlier LRS use that tax year.
The loan-funded exclusion turns on the statutory lender definition.
if the amount being remitted out is a loan obtained from any financial institution Income Tax Department, section 394
HDFC Bank Limited fits the banking-company part of the definition. A notified NBFC is a non-bank lender named by the Central Government for the tax provision. A 2010 notification names Credila’s former legal name, while section 536 preserves earlier notifications where consistent. The authorised dealer should confirm how that notification applies to Credila’s present legal name.
Under section 129 of the Income-tax Act, 2025, qualifying interest actually paid can be deducted in the initial tax year and 7 succeeding tax years, or until the interest is fully paid, whichever is earlier. Section 202 makes the deduction unavailable under the default regime, so it is an old tax regime deduction.
What should you watch out for before paying a fee?
The main risks appear between paying a fee and receiving each tranche. Insurance may be financed, a visa and release condition may depend on each other, or the approved recipient may not match the next deadline. Keep the signed documents, obtain approval for every change and use the complaint process of the lender named on the agreement.
- A non-refundable origination fee, meaning the processing fee described earlier, may become due at sanction before every visa, security or release condition is complete. The fee schedule, KFS and receipt should give its timing and refundability.
- Insurance can be added to financed principal and then attract loan interest. The proposal should name the insurer, insured person, premium, financing treatment, cancellation and refund terms.
- Visa evidence and first disbursement can depend on each other in the wrong order. The sanction and first-release checklist should state whether a pre-visa tuition deposit or blocked-account tranche can move.
- A university, campus, country, course or intake change may need an amendment or another approval and risk assessment. The lender’s change approval should come before payment to the new institution.
- An eligible cost isn’t automatically an approved beneficiary. The tranche instruction should name the institution, blocked-account provider or other payee before the deadline.
- Nil prepayment charge doesn’t complete closure. An NOC is the no-objection certificate confirming closure or release. The family still needs a dated payoff statement, posting date, daily-interest cut-off, NOC timeline, security-document return and credit-bureau update.
- A complaint sent to the wrong company can stall. Use the grievance officer and escalation path of the lender named on the agreement, then the applicable RBI process.
Three protections can be tested directly against the signed documents.
- The KFS and annexure should disclose APR, the amortisation schedule and lender or recovered third-party charges. An undisclosed later charge needs explicit consent under RBI’s KFS rule.
- Interest should run only from actual disbursement and only on the amount actually disbursed, not from sanction or on the undrawn balance.
- The applicable prepayment rule should appear in the KFS and agreement. The RBI bar applies to a qualifying floating individual non-business loan sanctioned or renewed from 1 January 2026.
Replace the example assumptions with the actual amount, tranche dates and study-period payment, then ask the lender to confirm the resulting first EMI balance.
What should the written education-loan offer contain?
A usable offer is a complete document pack, not one sanction letter. Before accepting it, check that the KFS, sanction, agreement, fee schedule, insurance proposal and release instructions name the same lender and agree on the price, security, family contribution, study-period payment, approved recipients, prepayment terms and complaint contact.
Identity and price
- Does the same lender name appear on the KFS, sanction, agreement, fee receipt and repayment mandate? A repayment mandate is the account instruction used to collect instalments.
- Do the sanctioned amount, planned releases, APR and amortisation schedule agree?
- Is the rate fixed or floating, and what are the benchmark, spread, reset frequency and next reset date?
- What is the exact fee in rupees, including GST, and when does it become non-refundable?
Eligibility and security
- Is the loan secured or unsecured, and who is the accepted co-applicant?
- Does the approval name the institution, campus, course, intake and destination?
- Which collateral value, LTV and legal conditions has the lender accepted, and how will the documents be returned?
- What cost has the lender approved, what margin must the family pay, and how are scholarships or deposits already paid treated?
Repayment and release
- What must the family pay during the course and grace period, and how is unpaid interest added?
- How many repayment months follow the moratorium, and what is the first EMI?
- What conditions apply to the first and later tranches, who receives each expense and which remittance documents are needed?
- How does part-payment or closure work, and when will the NOC, security papers and credit-bureau update arrive?
Protection and escalation
- Which insurance policies are proposed, what is each premium, will it be financed and how can it be cancelled?
- Which complaint address, escalation levels and regulator process apply to the lender?
- What happens if the visa, university, country, course or intake changes?
Place two offer packs side by side and mark every missing field. If the benchmark is blank, ask for its value and reset date. If an insurance premium is unexplained, ask whether it is optional and financed. If the recipient says only as applicable, ask the lender to name the university or account provider before acceptance.
- The HDFC Bank foreign page describes Credila lending, while no HDFC Bank-issued foreign KFS or foreign rate card was found.
- The displayed 9.25% channel rate, 9.95% direct secured rate and 11.25% direct unsecured rate come from separate pages and aren’t offers to the same student.
- Under the controlled INR 40 lakh model using those dated rates, unpaid study-period interest raises EMI-start principal from INR 40 lakh to between INR 49.25 lakh and INR 51.25 lakh.
- The HDFC website contradicts itself on the unsecured ceiling and processing fee, so the signed KFS must give both figures.
- A valid sanction still needs acceptable release wording, beneficiary routing and timing for the UK, Canada, Germany, Australia or US.
- From 1 April 2026, the self-funded example produces INR 60,000 TCS. Credila’s loan-funded result remains unresolved until the authorised dealer confirms the former-name notification mapping.
Frequently asked questions
Is HDFC Credila the same as HDFC Bank?
No. HDFC Bank reported that HDFC Credila ceased to be its subsidiary on 19 March 2024, and the current legal name is Credila Financial Services Limited. Your KFS, sanction letter and agreement should identify the same creditor. Historic HDFC Credila branding doesn’t make a current Credila loan an HDFC Bank loan.
Does HDFC Bank give education loans for study abroad?
HDFC Bank’s generic application and agreement allow international study, but no bank-issued foreign KFS or foreign rate card was found. Its foreign-education page describes Credila lending. Treat an offer as an HDFC Bank Limited loan only when the KFS and sanction name HDFC Bank Limited as lender.
What is the HDFC education loan interest rate for abroad?
The HDFC website displayed a 9.25% starting secured rate for Credila on 21 September 2026. Credila direct displayed 9.95% secured and 11.25% unsecured starting rates. The figures come from separate pages and don’t show what the same student would receive. No HDFC Bank Limited foreign rate was found.
Can I get an HDFC education loan without collateral?
The HDFC website publishes conflicting unsecured ceilings of INR 45 lakh and INR 75 lakh for Credila. Approval still depends on the course, institution, co-applicant, credit profile and lender assessment. Credila direct says the unsecured amount depends on eligibility. The KFS should say clearly whether the approved loan is secured or unsecured.
What is the processing fee for an HDFC foreign education loan?
The HDFC website’s Credila channel shows 1.5% plus tax in its charge table but up to 1% or INR 1,000 minimum in a same-page FAQ. Credila direct shows 1.25% plus tax. The signed KFS should state the exact fee in rupees, tax, payment stage and refundability.
Does interest run during the moratorium?
Yes, unless the signed repayment structure provides otherwise. A family may pay full interest, a partial monthly interest instalment, full EMI or nothing during study. Any unpaid interest can be added to principal. The KFS and amortisation schedule should state the monthly amount, capitalisation method and first EMI balance.
Is there a prepayment charge on the loan?
RBI bars prepayment charges on qualifying floating-rate individual non-business loans sanctioned or renewed from 1 January 2026. The protection covers part or full prepayment without a minimum lock-in. A fixed or hybrid loan may be treated differently, so the KFS must state the rate type and applicable prepayment rule.
Can an HDFC or Credila sanction letter be used for a student visa?
Sometimes, but acceptance depends on the destination’s wording and access rules. The UK tests the lender, student name, amount, age and release conditions of the letter. Germany may need money in a blocked account, while a US school checks financial ability before issuing Form I-20. Sanction alone isn’t universal proof.
