An education loan moratorium period delays the full EMI, but it rarely stops interest and some lenders require a monthly payment while you study. In the worked example below, four INR 10 lakh tranches at a constant illustrative 9.4% create INR 6.58 lakh of simple interest by month 30 when nothing is paid.

The useful comparison isn’t the advertised grace period alone. It is the balance on the date before the first full EMI, the cash your family must pay until then, and the repayment term that follows. The same INR 40 lakh can reach that date at INR 46.58 lakh, stay at INR 40 lakh, or fall to INR 35.37 lakh, depending on the payment structure.

Which dates and loan terms decide when repayment starts?

Repayment is fixed by the signed schedule, not by a generic promise of course period plus grace. Write down every tranche date, required study payment, course end date, grace end date and first full EMI date before signing. If two lender documents disagree, ask for a corrected schedule before the earlier date.

The money comes first. A disbursement is each tranche the lender releases, while the margin is the part your family funds. A moratorium is the period before regular full EMI, not necessarily a payment-free period. Capitalised interest joins the principal and increases the balance used for later EMI.

Payments before regular EMI have several names. Pre-EMI often means full or partial interest, while PMII means a partial monthly interest instalment. The agreement settles the meaning. The amortisation schedule then shows how each EMI is split between interest and principal.

The sanction letter offers the loan subject to conditions. The KFS, or Key Facts Statement, sets out the APR, charges and schedule for an Indian regulated lender. APR combines interest with the charges included under RBI’s KFS method.

A co-applicant signs with the student and is also responsible for repayment. Collateral is property, a deposit or another asset charged as security. An unsecured loan has no asset charge, but everyone who signs still has a repayment obligation.

For a floating loan, the benchmark is the reference rate that can move the loan rate. An NBFC is an RBI-regulated non-banking financial company, not a bank. A CIBIL score is one bureau’s score based on Indian credit history.

A notified NBFC has a narrower tax meaning. It must be covered by the Central Government notification required by section 129(3)(b). Ordinary RBI registration alone does not make every NBFC eligible for that section.

Loan event What changes Document to collect
Sanction A limit and conditions are offered, but no interest should run merely because the loan was sanctioned Sanction letter and KFS
First and later tranches Interest begins on the amount actually released, from its actual disbursement date Disbursement advice for every tranche
Course end The lender starts measuring the stated grace period, unless the agreement uses another trigger Completion letter and updated schedule
Grace end Full EMI usually starts after this date, but an interest-only or partial payment may already be due Mandate date and first EMI notice
Closure Final dues, security release and credit reporting must all be completed Dated full-closure statement, NOC and zero-balance proof

This sequence matters because interest should start only when each tranche is actually released. RBI identified charging from the sanction date, instead of the disbursement date, as an unfair practice.

How much does paying during the moratorium change the loan?

On four semester tranches totalling INR 40 lakh, paying nothing leaves INR 46.58 lakh before the first full EMI. Servicing all simple interest keeps the balance at INR 40 lakh. Starting an illustrative immediate EMI after each tranche reduces it to INR 35.37 lakh, but needs much more cash during study.

This example uses four INR 10 lakh disbursements at months 0, 6, 12 and 18. The course and grace finish at month 30. The illustrative rate is 9.4%. In the first two paths, 120 EMIs begin in month 31. The separate tenure table also shows what happens if that repayment term is extended to 180 months.

Simple interest is used before full EMI, then a monthly reducing balance. Fees, insurance, taxes, rate resets, day counts and rounding are excluded. Lifetime interest is measured against the INR 40 lakh disbursed.

Moratorium interest = amount disbursed × annual rate × months outstanding ÷ 12

Tranche Disbursed Months outstanding to month 30 Simple interest at 9.4%
Month 0 INR 10,00,000 30 INR 2,35,000
Month 6 INR 10,00,000 24 INR 1,88,000
Month 12 INR 10,00,000 18 INR 1,41,000
Month 18 INR 10,00,000 12 INR 94,000
Total INR 40,00,000 INR 6,58,000

Illustrative ledger. Actual figures come from the KFS and agreement, with the repayment schedule recording dates, day count, rate and rounding.

A shortcut that treats the whole INR 40 lakh as disbursed on day one produces INR 9.40 lakh of interest for 30 months. That overstates this semester-tranche example by INR 2.82 lakh. A sanction is a ceiling, so a month-by-month disbursement ledger is more useful than multiplying the full sanction by the full course period.

Three payment paths on the same INR 40 lakhGreen uses the lowest lifetime interest. Amber preserves more study cash. Red creates the largest first EMI balance.
Path Cash paid through month 30 Balance before month 31 EMI Later payment and lifetime interest
Pay nothing INR 0, peak monthly payment INR 0 INR 46,58,000 INR 60,019 for 120 months; lifetime interest INR 32,02,238
Pay full simple interest INR 6,58,000, peak INR 31,333 INR 40,00,000 INR 51,540 for 120 months; lifetime interest INR 28,42,833
Illustrative immediate EMI after every tranche INR 10,82,346, peak INR 51,540 INR 35,36,541 INR 51,540 in months 31 to 120, then step-down payments; lifetime interest INR 21,84,833

Avanse and IDFC FIRST publish an EMI-during-study option, but neither publishes this exact four-tranche example. The lender’s KFS, agreement and repayment schedule decide whether such a structure is available.

In the immediate path, every INR 10 lakh tranche starts its own 120-month EMI of INR 12,885 one month after release. The INR 51,540 peak is four such tranche EMIs, not an EMI recalculated on the INR 35.37 lakh month 30 balance. By the end of month 30, the newest tranche has 108 payments left, while the earlier tranches have fewer. The combined payment therefore stays INR 51,540 through month 120, then falls to INR 38,655 for months 121 to 126, INR 25,770 for months 127 to 132 and INR 12,885 for months 133 to 138.

Full interest servicing saves about INR 3.59 lakh against capitalising everything. The immediate EMI path saves another INR 6.58 lakh, but needs INR 10.82 lakh during study rather than INR 6.58 lakh.

SBI describes the consequence clearly on its Student Loan page. It says the unpaid amount becomes part of the EMI base.

How do EMI, loan size and repayment tenure change the total cost?

EMI is driven by the balance when repayment begins, the monthly rate and the number of instalments. A longer term lowers the monthly demand but can add far more interest. On the capitalised INR 46.58 lakh example, moving from 120 to 180 months cuts EMI by INR 11,660 and adds INR 15.02 lakh.

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n ÷ ((1 + r)n − 1)

Here P is the opening balance, r is the monthly interest rate and n is the number of monthly instalments. At 9.4%, the first INR 60,019 EMI on INR 46.58 lakh contains INR 36,488 of interest and INR 23,531 of principal after rounding, leaving INR 46,34,469.

Loan disbursed Moratorium interest Balance before first EMI 120-month EMI
INR 20 lakh INR 3.29 lakh INR 23.29 lakh INR 30,009
INR 40 lakh INR 6.58 lakh INR 46.58 lakh INR 60,019
INR 60 lakh INR 9.87 lakh INR 69.87 lakh INR 90,028

The four-tranche timing is scaled at 9.4%. The agreement may use different tranches and resets; its KFS and repayment schedule replace these figures.

Post-grace term Monthly EMI Total of EMIs Lifetime interest against INR 40 lakh
120 months INR 60,019 INR 72,02,238 INR 32,02,238
180 months INR 48,359 INR 87,04,676 INR 47,04,676

Both rows begin at INR 46.58 lakh and 9.4%, including capitalised interest. For a live loan, the KFS and agreement set the term while the repayment schedule replaces these rows.

A floating rate can change these numbers after signing. RBI requires an Indian regulated lender to communicate a benchmark change and allow a higher EMI, longer tenure or both, subject to applicable limits. The revised amortisation schedule records each reset’s effect.

Which lenders require payment during study, and when does full EMI start?

Lender pages do not use moratorium in one consistent way. Some allow zero payment and capitalise interest, some require full or partial simple interest, and foreign lenders may require a fixed or interest-only payment. The tables below separate the first full EMI date from what remains payable before that date.

PNB Udaan Course plus one year; interest servicing optional Accrued interest added; up to 15 years Official FAQ, checked 18 Sep 2026

Terms were checked on 18 September 2026. An undated page is not certified current merely because it remains live. The signed KFS, agreement and repayment schedule win.

SBI’s current Global Ed-Vantage page says repayment begins six months after course completion, while its Student Loan page says course period plus 12 months. These are separate schemes. A Global Ed-Vantage borrower should therefore see the six-month date written into the sanction schedule instead of assuming the Student Loan date applies.

Canara Bank’s IBA scheme uses course period plus one year, but its public scheme page does not clearly publish a zero-payment choice, compulsory interest payment or capitalisation treatment. Canara’s separate masters scheme has different terms and does not change this IBA scheme. PNB’s FAQ, by contrast, directly publishes optional interest servicing and addition of accrued interest.

Terms were checked on 18 September 2026. Where a page disagrees with itself, both positions are shown so the borrower can ask the lender to resolve them in the signed schedule.

The HDFC Bank foreign-education page identifies Credila Financial Services in the lender details. It functions as a distribution channel for Credila terms rather than a second HDFC Bank loan. Its course plus one year or six months after a job trigger still needs to match Credila’s executed schedule.

ICICI Bank’s current loan FAQ says simple interest is charged during a principal moratorium, but it does not give a product-specific grace duration. A separate ICICI article describes six months, which isn’t enough to set a contractual date. IDFC FIRST has a different conflict. It lists full SI as an option, then says all accrued interest is added, although full SI should leave no such unpaid interest.

Auxilo Education Loan Principal, interest, PMII or EMI as scheduled Offer-specific Facility agreement, checked 18 Sep 2026

Terms were checked on 18 September 2026. Not published means the public page does not answer the question. It does not mean that no payment or capitalisation applies.

Avanse and IDFC FIRST both publish EMI during study, but neither gives the four-tranche pattern used in this page’s illustration. InCred takes another route, requiring monthly full or partial interest and starting regular repayment after the course plus 12 months or employment, whichever comes earlier, at its discretion.

Credila doesn’t clearly publish its grace trigger, and its own rate page gives a 15-year maximum in one place and 20 years for undergraduate loans in another. Tata Capital publishes neither the study-period payment nor the capitalisation treatment, so a borrower needs both points written into the offer rather than assuming a payment holiday.

Poonawalla Fincorp says simple interest is payable during study and grace. The same current page also says some structures begin with partial payments, which means both statements can be true for different offers. Auxilo’s facility agreement similarly permits principal, interest, PMII or EMI according to its schedule, so the offer document determines what is compulsory.

Foreign loan availability, currency, eligibility and schedule can change by intake. The executed agreement and dashboard schedule control.

Prodigy requires USD 100 a month during study and its six-month grace for the current full-time structure. MPOWER’s repayment-term article says interest-only payments start 45 days after the school receives funds, while its current payment-start article says one month after funds are sent. The signed note and servicer schedule must settle that timing.

Lendwise’s borrow page welcomes international candidates at eligible UK or selected overseas institutions, while the application-flow footnote on that page says proposals are offered to UK residents only. Its student-loan page separately describes the full-time grace period. An Indian resident therefore needs written eligibility confirmation before relying on the international wording.

How can an Indian student repay the loan from abroad?

For an Indian rupee loan, the branch needs the student’s new residential status and contact details plus an agreed debit route. A foreign-currency loan needs the contracted currency early enough to reach the lender by the due date. The sender’s transfer instruction alone does not show that the instalment reached the loan account.

Paying an Indian lender from a foreign salary

RBI’s rupee borrowing direction permits repayment of an eligible Indian rupee loan through inward remittance or debit to the borrower’s NRE, FCNR(B) or NRO account, subject to lender and account rules. NRE means a Non-Resident External rupee account used for eligible overseas earnings. NRO means a Non-Resident Ordinary rupee account used for income and transactions in India. FCNR(B) is a Foreign Currency Non-Resident bank deposit kept in an approved foreign currency.

The simplest student route is usually to fund the lender-approved NRE or NRO account early and keep the EMI mandate on it. The simplest co-applicant route is to retain the mandate on their funded Indian account. InCred expressly publishes both routes. Any mandate change requires the lender’s accepted account and written process.

After the move, the lender needs the student’s new tax residency, address, mobile number and email. The remittance advice, receiving-bank credit and loan statement preserve the payment trail. The allocation reference is the identifier that tells the lender which loan and instalment should receive the money.

The operational route can differ by destination and bank. Students earning in the USA, UK, Canada, Germany or Australia should compare the receiving bank’s credited INR amount after both the transfer fee and exchange rate.

Paying a foreign lender

A foreign lender may receive USD, GBP or another currency through its app, a transfer provider or direct bank transfer. The total cost includes the instalment, sender fee, exchange-rate spread, correspondent deductions and applicable GST. The allocation reference links the transfer to the loan. Prodigy says third-party transfers can take three to five business days and direct bank transfers three to eight.

All payments must be made in the same currency as your loan. Prodigy Finance

Prodigy asks for the loan reference number in a bank transfer. Payment is complete when the lender records receipt and allocation, not when money leaves the sender’s account. If a co-applicant in India pays a foreign lender, the bank may use LRS, the Liberalised Remittance Scheme for resident individuals. The purpose code states why money is going abroad. TCS means tax collected at source on a covered remittance. The authorised dealer determines the code and current section 394 TCS treatment. A student abroad can usually pay the contracted currency from an overseas account accepted by the lender.

What happens if the course is extended, the visa is refused or a job takes longer?

A course extension, visa refusal or delayed job doesn’t automatically extend the moratorium. Contact the lender before the next contractual due date, give the evidence it asks for, and obtain a revised schedule in writing. Until that approval arrives, the existing interest payment, PMII, USD 100 payment or EMI remains due.

Change What to send What to ask in writing
Course end date moves University letter or transcript stating the revised academic end date New moratorium end, first EMI date, unchanged or changed total term, and revised instalment
Visa is refused before disbursement Refusal letter and university refund or deferral terms Cancellation process, fee refund, security release and closure confirmation
Visa is refused after disbursement Refusal letter, university refund proof and destination account details How the refund is allocated, interest to the receipt date, and any remaining balance
No job by grace end Employment-search evidence only if the lender requests it Whether hardship support exists, its cost, credit reporting effect and revised schedule
Withdrawal or failed semester University status and any fee refund Whether further tranches stop and when repayment now begins

SBI’s Global Ed-Vantage MITC asks a borrower to request a course-period extension before the moratorium ends. Prodigy’s course-extension guidance says approval can move the payment start date without changing the total loan term, so later monthly payments may rise. A revised date is incomplete without the revised amount.

What happens when a moratorium payment or EMI is missed?

A compulsory study payment can become overdue before regular EMI begins. There is no universal few-days cure period across lenders, and one late day does not necessarily appear at a bureau instantly. Reporting timing follows the lender’s policy and bureau cycle. Treat the contractual due date as firm and contact the lender before it if payment may fail.

  1. Establish the due. Match the scheduled amount, date and loan-account allocation.
  2. Contact the lender. If the debit failed or funds were misapplied, report it immediately and keep the service request.
  3. Clear or dispute it. Pay the undisputed amount and use the grievance channel for an allocation error.
  4. Review the records. After correction or payment, match the loan statement and later review both borrowers’ credit reports.

The co-applicant is not a backup contact. They are liable under the agreement, so a missed payment can affect both borrowers. After any disputed or cured delinquency, each borrower should obtain their Indian credit reports and raise a correction with the lender and bureau if the account data is wrong.

Such penal charges shall be reasonable and levied by the lenders only on the amount under default. Reserve Bank of India

RBI has not set one universal rupee cap on penal charges. It bars penal interest, requires the charge to be reasonable and prevents further interest on the penal charge itself. Contracted normal interest can still run on unpaid dues, which is why an early written request gives the lender more room to consider an arrangement.

How should you prepay or close an education loan?

Closing a loan needs more than transferring the balance shown online. A dated foreclosure or full-closure statement fixes the amount for the intended payment date and supplies the reference. Zero-balance proof and the no-objection certificate complete the lender record. After its reporting cycle, both borrowers’ credit reports should show the account as closed.

  • Request a dated foreclosure or full-closure statement for the intended payment date.
  • Confirm the payment account, currency, reference and allocation order.
  • Ask whether any fixed-rate prepayment charge or third-party transfer cost applies.
  • Keep the transfer proof and obtain a final zero-balance statement.
  • Collect the NOC or closure letter and close any unused debit mandate.
  • For a secured loan, collect original property documents and proof that the registered charge was released.
  • Check the student’s and co-applicant’s credit reports after reporting updates.

A negotiated settlement is different from full closure. It usually means the lender agrees to accept less than the contractual amount, and it can be reported differently to credit bureaus. A borrower seeking full repayment should use the lender’s foreclosure or full-closure process and obtain written closure after payment.

For loans sanctioned or renewed from 1 January 2026, RBI bars a prepayment charge on a floating-rate non-business loan to an individual at an Indian bank or NBFC, including part-payment and payment from another source. A fixed-rate loan may still carry a disclosed charge. Foreign lenders sit outside this RBI direction, so their own agreements decide the result.

RBI also requires the Indian lender to disclose the prepayment position in the sanction letter, agreement and KFS where applicable. An extra payment does not always shorten tenure automatically. The new amortisation schedule should show whether it reduces the instalment, the term or both.

What should you watch out for before signing?

The earlier sections show where repayment assumptions break down. Before signing, turn each one into a date, amount or written rule in the KFS or agreement. Then maintain a tranche ledger and compare it with the lender’s schedule after each disbursement, benchmark reset and extra payment. These seven checks catch the gaps most likely to change your cash flow.

  1. Moratorium means zero payment. It may pause only principal while simple interest, partial interest or a fixed study payment remains due.
  2. Interest runs on the sanction. It should run on the amount actually disbursed from the actual release date.
  3. One scheme’s date applies to another. A duration published for an SBI Student Loan does not automatically apply to Global Ed-Vantage.
  4. A longer course or no job creates an automatic extension. The current schedule remains until the lender approves a change.
  5. A floating reset changes only the rate. EMI, tenure or both can move, so collect the revised amortisation schedule.
  6. A transfer sent from abroad completes the instalment. Confirm that the lender received and allocated it to the correct loan.
  7. The last transfer closes everything. Collect the NOC, collateral release and zero-balance proof, then check both credit reports.

Any fees, charges, etc. which are not mentioned in the KFS, cannot be charged by the REs to the borrower at any stage. Reserve Bank of India

Key takeaways

  • A moratorium delays full EMI, not necessarily every payment or the accumulation of interest.
  • Compare lenders by cash paid during study and the balance before the first full EMI, not by grace months alone.
  • For the worked INR 40 lakh loan, servicing simple interest keeps INR 6.58 lakh from being added to principal.
  • Course changes, job delays and visa refusal need written lender action before the contractual due date.
  • Repayment is complete only after allocation, zero-balance proof, NOC, security release and corrected credit reporting.

Frequently asked questions

What is the moratorium period in an education loan?

The education loan moratorium period is the interval before regular full EMI begins, usually covering the course and a lender-defined grace period. It may postpone principal only. Interest can accrue, be payable monthly, be partly serviced or be added to principal, according to the KFS and signed repayment schedule.

Does interest accrue during the education loan moratorium?

Yes, interest normally accrues on each amount actually disbursed. Some lenders let it remain unpaid and capitalise it before EMI, while others require full or partial simple interest during study. The worked example produces INR 6.58 lakh on four INR 10 lakh tranches at an illustrative constant 9.4%.

When does education loan repayment start after studying abroad?

The signed schedule decides the date. SBI Global Ed-Vantage currently says six months after course completion, while Canara’s IBA scheme says course plus one year. A required interest, PMII or fixed payment can begin much earlier. Record the exact course end, grace end and first EMI date before signing.

Is it better to pay interest during the moratorium?

It lowers the later balance and usually the lifetime interest, but uses family cash during study. In this illustration, servicing INR 6.58 lakh of simple interest keeps the first EMI balance at INR 40 lakh and saves about INR 3.59 lakh against full capitalisation. Your lender’s actual rate and tranches will differ.

Can the moratorium be extended if I do not get a job?

Not automatically. A no-job period, course extension or visa problem does not replace the repayment schedule. Contact the lender before the next due date, provide the requested evidence, and obtain the decision and revised schedule in writing. Until approval, every contracted study payment or EMI remains due.

Can I repay an Indian education loan from abroad?

Yes. RBI permits eligible rupee-loan repayment through inward remittance or debit to the borrower’s NRE, FCNR(B) or NRO account, subject to lender and account rules. Tell the branch about the residency change, obtain its instructions, preserve remittance proof and confirm that every payment was allocated to the correct loan.

Are there prepayment charges on an education loan?

For an Indian floating-rate non-business loan sanctioned or renewed from 1 January 2026, RBI bars banks and NBFCs from charging an individual for part or full prepayment. Fixed-rate loans can still carry a disclosed charge. Foreign lenders are outside this RBI rule, so their own agreement decides the charge.

What happens if I miss a payment during the moratorium?

If the payment is compulsory, it can become overdue even while you study. There is no universal extra cure period, while bureau reporting follows each lender’s policy and reporting cycle. Contact the lender before the due date if difficulty is likely, ask for relief in writing, and later check both borrowers’ credit reports.
