A Union Bank of India education loan for abroad studies can cover more than INR 7.5 lakh and up to INR 1.5 crore for listed full-time postgraduate courses. Union’s list, not the borrower, assigns each eligible university and course to Category A or B. That category sets the largest loan available without property or another asset as security, which is INR 40 lakh for A and INR 30 lakh for B.
The first action is to find the exact campus and course row on Union’s live premier-institute list and save it with the date. Before paying the non-refundable fee, the branch should confirm the category, eligible course cost, loan amount, margin and collateral in writing. After appraisal, the Key Facts Statement, or KFS, should show the rate, fees and repayment schedule.
What do Union Bank’s education-loan terms mean?
Three decisions produce the Union offer. The institution and course row assigns Category A or B. The required loan amount decides whether collateral is compulsory. Where a secured route is available, the amount of collateral then sets the published rate and margin. You may offer more security, but you can’t choose your category.
- Match the row: Confirm the exact institution, campus, course family and assigned category.
- Match the amount: Compare the required loan with that category’s unsecured ceiling.
- Match the security: Where collateral applies, compare the published 50% and 100% cover choices.
- Collateral: Property, a deposit or another specified asset that Union can enforce after default, subject to the contract and law.
- Unsecured: A loan with no charge on a specified asset. It can still require a co-applicant and full repayment.
- Co-applicant: A person who signs as a joint borrower. The executed agreement sets that person’s exact duty.
- Margin: The part of the eligible education cost that the family pays.
- Moratorium: The course period and bank-approved pause before regular principal-and-interest instalments. Interest may still be due.
The KFS is Union’s standard cost disclosure for your offer. Under the RBI commercial-bank conduct Directions updated 1 July 2026, it must show the annual percentage rate, charges and full repayment schedule. Annual percentage rate, or APR, means the yearly credit cost after the charges covered by RBI’s rule are included.
If the loan term is at least seven days, the borrower must get at least three working days to consider the proposal. The family should record the KFS receipt date and the last date for acceptance.
Is your university and course really in Category A or B?
Your exact institution, campus and postgraduate course must match one of Union’s live rows before Category A or B has any meaning for your loan. The row assigns the category and eligible course family. A university name by itself is not enough, and the borrower cannot move an application from one category to another.
The Union premier-institute page read on 19 September 2026 limits this special route in its eligibility wording.
admission in full time Post Graduate Courses in the Premium University Abroad Union Bank, premier-abroad eligibility
The page attaches course families such as STEM, management, law, economics, art, design or medicine to each institution. The checks below turn one list row into a branch confirmation.
| Check | Category A | Category B | What to obtain in writing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exact institution | Must match one Category A row | Must match one Category B row | Institution name used for appraisal |
| Exact campus | Confirm separately | Confirm separately | Campus named in the file |
| Postgraduate course family | Must match the row | Must match the row | Course and listed family |
| Assigned category | A | B | Category in the sanction |
| Unsecured ceiling | INR 40 lakh | INR 30 lakh | Sanctioned loan amount |
| List publication date | Not published | Not published | Dated copy used for appraisal |
On 19 September 2026, Category A had 160 rows and 160 unique institution names. Category B had 100 rows but 98 unique names because Wageningen University & Research Centre and Eindhoven University of Technology each appeared twice.
Union does not show a publication date or version number for either list, and its country labels are not always consistent. Save the row used for appraisal and have the sanction name the institution, campus, course and category. Union publishes no rule for a list change between sanction and a later course payment.
How much can Union Bank lend without collateral?
Union publishes this special route for loans above INR 7.5 lakh and up to INR 1.5 crore. Category A is unsecured through INR 40 lakh, while Category B is unsecured through INR 30 lakh. Above the relevant limit, Union requires collateral worth at least 50% of its published security base.
The scheme page shows INR 7.5 lakh as its minimum, while the rate PDF updated 18 August 2026 describes these bands as above INR 7.5 lakh. Union must name the route for an application of exactly INR 7.5 lakh.
Union’s published security base is the loan principal plus projected interest for the course and moratorium. A haircut is Union’s reduction to an asset’s market value for lending.
Union’s security base = loan principal + projected course and moratorium interest
The requested loan and assigned category show when collateral becomes compulsory.
| Requested loan (INR) | Category A route | Category B route |
|---|---|---|
| Above 7.5 lakh through 30 lakh | Unsecured | Unsecured |
| Above 30 lakh through 40 lakh | Unsecured | At least 50% collateral |
| Above 40 lakh through 1.5 crore | At least 50% of Union’s security base | At least 50% of Union’s security base |
Limits and bands are from the Union scheme page and rate PDF checked on 19 September 2026. Approval and the asset value Union accepts depend on the applicant’s file.
Offering at least 100% cover is optional where Union accepts the asset. It can lower the rate and make the published margin nil, but it puts more family assets at risk.
| Collateral choice | Published rate effect | Published margin effect | Asset requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| At least 50% but below 100% | Secured middle rate | 15% margin | At least 50% of Union’s security base |
| At least 100% | Lowest category rate | Nil margin | At least 100% of Union’s security base |
Union lists property, bank deposits, gold, approved securities and certain other tangible assets, subject to its terms. The asset’s market value may need to be higher than the security base after Union applies its haircut.
| Evidence | What it supports |
|---|---|
| Current rate PDF | Unsecured ceiling is INR 30 lakh |
| Category B margin table | Margin is 15% through an INR 30 lakh loan |
| Category B security paragraph | It repeats the Category A label and INR 40 lakh wording |
| Your sanction | Union must state your category, amount and collateral requirement |
INR 30 lakh is Category B’s unsecured limit in the current rate PDF. The Category B margin table separately gives a 15% margin through that loan amount. The sanction should repeat both terms.
What is Union Bank’s current education loan interest rate?
Union’s premier-abroad rate PDF updated 18 August 2026 gives rates from 8.25% to 9.5%, effective 24 July 2026. The applicable figure depends on Category A or B and collateral cover. These are interest rates before fees, not the complete annual cost shown by APR.
The benchmark is Union’s reference rate for this floating loan. The spread is the percentage added to it. The live Union interest-rate page showed its external benchmark lending rate, or EBLR, at 8% from 6 September 2026 when checked on 19 September 2026.
EBLR + spread = current interest rate before fees
| Category | Security band | Spread over EBLR (percentage points) | Current interest rate before fees |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Unsecured through INR 40 lakh | 1.25 | 9.25% |
| A | 50% to below 100% cover | 0.5 | 8.5% |
| A | 100% or more cover | 0.25 | 8.25% |
| B | Unsecured through INR 30 lakh | 1.5 | 9.5% |
| B | 50% to below 100% cover | 0.65 | 8.65% |
| B | 100% or more cover | 0.4 | 8.4% |
Union Bank rate PDF updated 18 August 2026, effective 24 July 2026. Your KFS gives the APR and the rate accepted for your loan.
The dated PDF should control instead of the older grid hidden in the scheme page. Union’s general FAQ mentions a female-student concession and a rebate for monthly interest paid during study, but neither appears in the current premier-abroad grid. Neither should be subtracted unless Union writes it into the offer.
An EBLR-linked rate can change. The KFS needs to state the benchmark, spread, current rate, next reset date and APR. When the benchmark moves, ask whether Union will raise the monthly instalment, extend repayment or use both. If Union doesn’t offer a fixed-rate conversion, the loan remains floating.
RBI also restricts later charges that were not disclosed in the KFS.
which are not mentioned in the KFS, cannot be charged by the bank to the borrower at any stage RBI, 2026 conduct Directions
RBI’s full rule allows a later undisclosed charge only when the borrower gives explicit consent.
What does an INR 40 lakh course cost under Category A and B?
An INR 40 lakh course and an INR 40 lakh loan are different cases. With Union’s published 15% ordinary margin, the first produces an INR 34 lakh loan. The second needs a higher eligible course cost. Keeping those meanings separate is essential before comparing Category A and B or choosing collateral.
Case 1. Course cost INR 40,00,000. Family pays INR 6,00,000 and Union lends INR 34,00,000.
Case 2. Requested loan INR 40,00,000. Eligible cost is about INR 47,05,882 and family pays about INR 7,05,882.
A requested loan of exactly INR 40 lakh is inside Category A’s unsecured ceiling but already above Category B’s. If 100% collateral permits nil margin and the family borrows the full course cost, every interest, instalment and collateral figure changes.
The example below uses Case 1. It assumes a 24-month course, Union’s additional 12-month pause, full INR 34 lakh payment on day one and 180 regular instalments. The family pays interest every month during months 1 to 36, so regular repayment starts with INR 34 lakh. A staged release would normally reduce study interest.
If the family pays nothing during study, the balance used to calculate later instalments will be larger. Union does not publish enough detail to calculate that instalment safely. The KFS must show what is due during study and the balance at the start of regular repayment. Rates are held constant here, although EBLR can change.
This timeline shows when each monthly amount applies, subject to the dates in the KFS.
| Months | Stage | Payment used in this example |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 24 | Course period | Monthly interest on the amount already released |
| 25 to 36 | Additional one-year pause | Monthly interest continues |
| 37 to 216 | Regular repayment | 180 monthly principal-and-interest instalments |
For Category A, the first table compares the unsecured route with 50% to below 100% collateral. The second keeps identical rows for the 100% cover route. Insurance, GST, legal, valuation, remittance and exchange costs are excluded.
| Family payment or loan item | Category A unsecured (INR) | Category A 50% to below 100% cover (INR) |

Independent illustration using Union’s rates checked on 19 September 2026. The 100% cover comparison keeps the INR 34 lakh loan and INR 6 lakh contribution constant even though Union publishes nil required margin for that route.
| Category A secured route | Illustrative cover using Union’s published base (INR) | Question for the branch |
|---|---|---|
| At least 50% cover | 21,33,500 | Does paying monthly interest reduce projected interest in Union’s calculation? |
| At least 100% cover | 42,41,500 | What market value remains after Union’s haircut? |
A secured route brings valuation, legal and asset risk that a lower instalment does not measure. Union should show its collateral calculation in rupees before the family pays for legal or valuation work.
For Category B, the same INR 34 lakh loan is above the INR 30 lakh unsecured ceiling, so at least 50% collateral is required. The course decides A or B. A Category A borrower cannot select B, and within the same security band Category B has the higher published rate.
| Family payment or loan item | Category B at least 50% cover (INR) |

What will Union Bank’s margin, fees and other costs add?
Union publishes a 15% margin for the ordinary Category A and B bands, while at least 100% collateral can make the margin nil. Legal and valuation work sits outside the loan, and term life cover is required. Germany without tuition has a separate minimum 30% margin for listed living and study costs.
The scheme page read on 19 September 2026 gives the following published treatment.
| Cost or condition | Published treatment | What remains applicant-specific |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary margin | 15% in the stated Category A and B bands | Eligible-cost base and payment timing |
| At least 100% collateral | Nil margin | Accepted security value and fee above INR 40 lakh |
| Tuition-free Germany | At least 30% margin for eligible books, hostel, mess and related costs | Accepted expense heads and payee |
| Scholarship | May count as margin but must be deposited | When it is credited to the margin |
| Sanctioned loan up to and including INR 40 lakh | INR 10,000 plus applicable GST | Any written concession |
| Sanctioned loan above INR 40 lakh | INR 20,000 plus applicable GST | Conflict with the full-collateral note |
| Property legal and valuation work | Paid by the borrower and outside the loan | Actual quoted amount |
| Term life cover | At least the loan amount across course, moratorium and repayment, assigned to Union | Premium, which may be included in the loan if requested |
Published scheme terms checked on 19 September 2026. GST and third-party amounts are not calculated here.
The processing fee is collected before the sanction letter. Union’s wording is unusually broad.
will not be refunded in any case even if students’ avail/not avail the loan Union Bank, premier-abroad fee terms
Another Union charge schedule says processing for Union Education is nil, while the special page sets explicit fees. For a sanctioned loan above INR 40 lakh with full collateral, one note says INR 10,000 and the fee table says INR 20,000 plus GST. A written rupee fee and refund position is needed before payment.
Union’s foreign-exchange tariff checked on 19 September 2026 says its own education-loan remittance carries no commission apart from SWIFT charges. That does not make the transfer free. Currency conversion, GST, correspondent or beneficiary-bank deductions and any shortfall can remain. The sanction should say whether those costs sit inside the limit or need separate family cash.
Who is eligible, and what will the co-applicant need?
The special route is for an Indian national admitted to a listed full-time postgraduate course abroad, and it excludes NRI students. Union names a parent or spouse as co-applicant or guarantor. A guarantor promises to meet the debt under the signed guarantee, while a co-applicant signs as a joint borrower.
The scheme page separates financial means from the signing role.
Income/means of the co-applicant / guarantor is not to be considered while sanctioning the loan Union Bank, premier-abroad co-applicant terms
That sentence does not mean the branch will ask for no financial records. Union’s generic document page checked on 19 September 2026 still asks for income proof if available and 12 months of statements for the borrower, co-borrower or guarantor.
A CIBIL score summarises a credit report on a scale ending at 900. Union’s special-scheme page checked on 19 September 2026 lists 650 and above, or minus one. The bank does not explain minus one, so a person with no score isn’t guaranteed approval. Settled, written-off, overdue or disputed accounts still need review.
The general education-loan FAQ checked on 19 September 2026 mentions qualifying-exam marks of 60% for General candidates and 50% for OBC and SC/ST candidates for study abroad. The special-scheme page publishes no percentage, so the branch must confirm whether an academic condition applies here.
Confirm before paying the fee
- Will the parent or spouse sign as co-applicant, guarantor or both in this file?
- How will Union assess a bureau result of minus one and any settled, overdue, written-off or disputed account?
- Does an academic-percentage condition apply to this special scheme?
Bring for the first review
- Student and co-applicant or guarantor KYC, PAN, passport, photographs and current address evidence.
- Offer letter, exact campus and course, full-time status, duration and a semester-wise cost sheet.
- Marksheets, certificates, scholarship evidence, bank statements and proof of the proposed margin source.
Union may ask after appraisal
- Income proof if available, course accreditation details and further bank statements or credit explanations.
- The insurance proposal and any foreign-exchange information needed for the overseas payment.
Property records if collateral applies
- Bring ownership and available title records for the first discussion.
- Arrange valuation, legal review, lien or mortgage steps only after Union gives the file-specific requirement.
Union’s application form also asks whether the family will pay interest every month during study and collects a year-wise or semester-wise course budget. Those choices affect cash flow and later payments, but the form does not reveal the bank’s exact approval formula.
What happens during the moratorium and repayment?
Union publishes the course period plus one year before regular repayment, followed by up to 180 monthly instalments. Interest still runs during the pause. The application asks whether the family will pay that interest every month, but the special-scheme page does not explain how unpaid interest is added to the later repayment balance.
The published moratorium wording is short.
Course period + 1 year Union Bank, premier-abroad moratorium
For a 24-month course, months 1 to 24 are study, months 25 to 36 are the additional pause and the first regular instalment starts in month 37, subject to the KFS. The KFS should state the payment during study and the balance used to calculate that month 37 instalment.
If the benchmark changes, the RBI conduct Directions updated 1 July 2026 require the effect to be explained. The KFS should say whether the monthly payment rises, the loan lasts longer or both. A fixed-rate switch exists only if Union’s policy permits it.
An individual floating-rate education loan used for a non-business purpose has no part-prepayment or full-prepayment charge under the current RBI rule, including where there is a co-applicant and regardless of the payment source. Fixed-rate and hybrid periods need a separate contract check.
Union’s penal-charge schedule checked on 19 September 2026 says a delayed instalment or overdue EMI can attract a 2% charge, with applicable GST. The charge itself cannot earn interest. The KFS must identify the event and amount, while contracted interest on an unpaid balance can continue separately.
How does a Union sanction become the first overseas payment?
A sanction letter does not mean Union has sent the money. Before the first payment, the family may need to pay its margin, complete the property or deposit formalities and give Union the university’s payment details. Union says it pays the institute directly, but publishes no complete first-payment checklist or transfer time.
Form A2 is the outward-remittance instruction recording the person sending money, the recipient, currency, amount and education purpose. Union uses it after accepting the loan conditions and payment evidence. A sanction letter by itself does not prove that foreign currency has left India or reached the recipient.
- Submit a complete application with the category, course, cost and co-applicant evidence.
- Complete Union’s credit, category and any collateral appraisal.
- Receive and check the sanction, KFS, amortisation schedule and loan agreement.
- Meet the margin, insurance and collateral conditions, then submit Form A2 and the recipient’s payment details.
- Obtain Union’s debit entry and SWIFT advice, which is its international-transfer confirmation. Obtain the amount-received confirmation from the university, then compare the recipient, currency, value date and any shortfall.
Union states its normal payee in direct terms.
Loan would be disbursed directly to the institute. Union Bank, premier-abroad disbursement
The same page allows limited reimbursement. A first-term fee paid to secure admission may be reimbursed within six months of securing admission against original proof. It also permits reimbursement of a temporary term-fee payment made during sanction, on request and proof. This is not a general promise to reimburse every pre-sanction or visa payment.
Union’s education-loan FAQ checked on 19 September 2026 sets a seven-working-day sanction target after it receives every required document. This doesn’t promise that the overseas payment will happen within seven days. The branch should give separate expected dates for sanction and payment.
A Canadian guaranteed investment certificate, or GIC, is money held by a participating Canadian financial institution for later student payments. A German blocked account is a restricted account that releases only a set monthly amount. Neither provider is the university, so Union’s direct-to-institute wording does not answer whether it can pay them.
The table shows who may receive each part of the sanctioned loan and what proof remains unpublished.
| Payment issue | Published position | What to get in writing |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition payee | Direct to institute | Beneficiary details and release date |
| Living expenses | May be an eligible cost | Payee, evidence and payment frequency |
| Canadian GIC | None published | Accepted GIC provider, amount and pre-visa release condition |
| German blocked account | None published | Accepted provider, amount, pre-visa timing and margin |
| Private accommodation | Reasonable cost may be considered | Landlord or student payment route |
| First and later draw records | No complete checklist published | Demand, progress, visa and margin documents |
| Exchange rate | No rate lock published | Rate-setting time and shortfall treatment |
| Visa refusal refund | No process published | Refund credit, interest and undrawn-limit treatment |
Union’s application divides costs by year or semester, which allows it to review payments in stages but does not make later payments automatic. Each later release may need a fresh fee demand, continued enrolment, progress evidence, margin proof and recipient details. The branch should give that list before the first deadline.
Will the Union sanction work for your student visa?
A Union sanction can support a visa application only when its wording and release conditions meet that destination’s official rule. The United Kingdom is specific about the loan letter, while Canada expressly accepts a bank education loan. Germany says a loan is additional evidence, not a blocked-account replacement. Payee and timing therefore matter.
FIN 9.2 is the section of the United Kingdom’s immigration finance rules that sets what a student-loan letter must contain. The table compares each destination’s rule with the payment Union is willing to make.
| Destination | Official evidence rule | Union question |
|---|---|---|
| United States | A consular officer may ask how education, living and travel costs will be paid | Will the school’s required financial evidence and payment timing match the sanction? |
| United Kingdom | FIN 9.2 sets lender, date, amount and release-condition requirements for the loan letter | Will Union issue a letter meeting every FIN 9.2 field? |
| Canada | A bank education loan is accepted evidence, while a GIC is only one accepted route | Will Union pay a GIC issuer or only the institute? |
| Germany | A loan is additional evidence and does not replace the blocked account | Will Union pay the blocked-account provider before the visa? |
| Australia | A financial-institution loan may show capacity, but genuine access to funds matters | Will Union disburse before the visa and how are living funds made accessible? |
Destination rules were checked on 19 September 2026. Each authority can update its evidence requirements, so use the linked current government page for the actual application.
For students headed to the USA, the US Department of State student-visa page does not set one national education-loan-letter format. For the UK, Appendix Finance updated 3 August 2026 requires a letter no more than six months old and restricts the conditions that may remain before release.
For Canada, the IRCC financial-support page updated 28 August 2026 accepts proof of a bank education loan and expects first-year funds plus a plan for the course. Union’s direct-to-institute rule does not itself promise payment to a GIC issuer.
For Germany, the German Missions in India list a blocked account of EUR 11,904 with EUR 992 monthly access in their financial-means guidance dated 16 February 2026. Their student-visa FAQ treats an education loan as additional evidence, not a substitute. Union’s 30% Germany margin rule still leaves the provider and release date unresolved.
For Australia, the Department of Home Affairs student-visa page accepts a financial-institution loan as capacity evidence and examines genuine access. A tuition remittance can prove access to the amount paid, but it does not prove living funds are available.
Which tax, TCS and borrower protections apply in 2026?
If you use the old tax regime, section 129 may let the eligible borrower deduct education-loan interest for up to eight tax years. Tax collected at source, or TCS, is tax collected when specified money goes abroad. A qualifying Union-loan-funded education remittance has nil TCS, while self-funded education has 2% TCS above INR 10 lakh.
The Income-tax Act, 2025 and Finance Act, 2026 apply from 1 April 2026, and section 129 replaced section 80E. The claimant, relationship to the student and payment account must meet the Act’s rules.
- Confirm which person is named as borrower in the executed loan agreement.
- Keep the loan statement and annual interest certificate showing who paid the interest.
- Confirm that the claimant uses the old tax regime and has the relationship recognised by section 129.
Self-funded TCS example = (INR 25,00,000 minus INR 10,00,000) x 2% = INR 30,000
The example assumes no other Liberalised Remittance Scheme, or LRS, payment changes the annual threshold. A qualifying INR 25 lakh Union-loan-funded education remittance is nil TCS under section 394(4)(b). Union acts as the RBI-authorised bank handling the remittance. For mixed funding, have it record the loan-funded and family-funded amounts separately.
RBI protections also affect the offer after sanction.
- The KFS must show APR, relevant charges and the amortisation schedule.
- Interest should begin from actual disbursement, not merely the sanction or agreement date, under the RBI fair-interest circular dated 29 April 2024.
- Penal charges cannot themselves earn interest and must be disclosed.
- A qualifying floating individual non-business loan has no prepayment charge under the current conduct Directions.
- After full repayment or settlement, original property records and registered-charge removal are due within 30 days, with INR 5,000 a day compensation where the lender causes the delay under the RBI property-document release Directions.
If the student later becomes non-resident, continuation is not automatic. The RBI rupee borrowing Direction updated 8 September 2026 lets the authorised dealer bank continue the loan to its original maturity when satisfied with the case. Repayment can use inward remittance or permitted non-resident accounts.
How do you apply without losing control of the offer?
Applications begin at the Union branch or retail loan centre linked to the parents’ permanent-address area. Union calls this the domicile branch. The process should connect the saved institution row to the offer and each overseas payment, so the category, cost, collateral, repayment terms and recipient agree before the fee or a university deadline.
- Save the live institution row with the access date and exact listed course family.
- Ask the branch to name the scheme, category, campus and course in writing.
- Submit the term-wise cost sheet, scholarship, family margin source and co-applicant pack.
- Where collateral applies, obtain Union’s collateral calculation in rupees before paying for valuation and legal work.
- Review the KFS, amortisation schedule, charge statement and draft agreement before acceptance.
- Ensure the sanction lists every condition and permitted recipient before the first payment.
- After each draw, match the value date, exchange rate, bank debit and beneficiary receipt to the loan statement.
Copy these points into the branch request
- The scheme name, saved list row, institution, campus, course and assigned category.
- The eligible course cost, family margin and sanctioned loan amount.
- Union’s collateral base and required cover in rupees.
- The benchmark, spread, current interest rate and APR.
- The processing fee, GST and refund rule.
- The amount due every month during study and the balance used for regular repayment.
- The permitted recipient for tuition, living costs, a GIC or blocked account where relevant.
- Every condition and document for the first and later payments.
Write down the name of the person handling the application, the date Union confirms that all documents were received and anything still required. The seven-working-day statement starts after the required papers are complete, not after the first enquiry. If a published rule and branch interpretation differ, Union’s formal grievance channel creates a dated record.
What should you watch out for before accepting Union Bank?
Seven unanswered points can change the approved amount, upfront cash, rate or university deadline. Each needs a named written answer rather than a sales message. The important checks are the Category B limit, exact institution row, current rate, non-refundable fee, Union’s collateral calculation, study-period interest and the recipient for visa-related money.

| Rate and concessions | A hidden old grid and generic concessions conflict with the current premier PDF | KFS with benchmark, spread and APR |
| Processing fee | The special page, generic schedule and full-collateral note disagree | Written fee quote and receipt |
| Security cover | The percentage includes projected course and moratorium interest | Union’s collateral calculation in rupees and the asset valuation |
| Study interest | No public method for adding unpaid interest is published | KFS repayment schedule |
| Visa-related recipient | Direct-to-institute wording does not resolve GIC, blocked-account or living-cost payments | Branch email listing each recipient, amount, release date, visa condition and required proof |
Three matters are already protected by current RBI rules. The applicant is entitled to a KFS for this offer and disclosure of relevant charges. Interest should run from the actual disbursement rather than the sanction. RBI also bars a prepayment fee when you partly or fully close an eligible floating loan.
After the last payment, confirm that the account shows a zero balance and is marked closed. Collect the original records, get any lien or mortgage removed and check the updated credit report. RBI’s 30-day property-document rule does not promise that Union will complete every closure step remotely.
Union can fit well when the exact institution and course sit in the right category and the family can use the applicable security band. The INR 1.5 crore ceiling alone is not enough. Before accepting, obtain these five items.
- Category confirmation naming the institution, campus and course.
- Current benchmark, spread and interest rate.
- Union’s collateral calculation in rupees.
- KFS showing APR, fees and repayment schedule.
- Approved recipient and release condition for each expense.
The calculator below estimates the rate, fee and instalment from the amount entered. It cannot assign the category, value collateral or confirm an overseas recipient. The course cost and required loan should remain separate when the family takes the estimate and written-request list to the branch.
- The exact university, campus and postgraduate course must match the bank’s live category row before an unsecured ceiling is useful.
- Category A publishes an INR 40 lakh unsecured ceiling, while Category B publishes INR 30 lakh in the current rate evidence.
- The dated rate PDF gives the current public grid, while the applicant’s KFS controls the accepted offer.
- Union measures collateral cover against principal plus projected course and moratorium interest, not principal alone.
- A visa plan needs the permitted payee and release timing in writing because eligible cost does not automatically mean usable pre-visa money.
Frequently asked questions
Is Union Bank’s abroad education loan collateral-free?
It can be. Union’s current scheme publishes an unsecured ceiling of INR 40 lakh for Category A and INR 30 lakh for Category B. The exact institution, campus and course must qualify. Above the relevant ceiling, the bank publishes at least 50% collateral against principal plus projected course and moratorium interest.
What is the current Union Bank education loan interest rate?
The rate PDF updated 18 August 2026 publishes six premier-abroad rates from 8.25% to 9.5%. The applicable rate depends on Category A or B and collateral cover. Your KFS must state the benchmark, spread, effective rate, APR, reset terms and repayment schedule.
Is my university in Union Bank Category A or Category B?
Search the bank’s live embedded table for the exact university, then match the campus, full-time postgraduate course and listed course family. Category B had 100 rows but 98 unique names on 19 September 2026. Ask the branch and sanction letter to reproduce the category and exact course rather than relying on the name alone.
What CIBIL score does the co-applicant or guarantor need?
Union’s special-scheme page lists 650 and above, or a score code of minus one. The bank does not define minus one there, so approval isn’t guaranteed for a person with no score. Ask how Union will treat any settled, written-off, overdue or disputed account before paying the fee.
Is the Union Bank processing fee refundable?
No refund is promised. The special page says the fee is collected before sanction and isn’t refunded even if the student uses or does not use the loan. It publishes INR 10,000 plus GST for a sanctioned loan through INR 40 lakh and INR 20,000 plus GST above it, although one full-collateral note conflicts.
Does Union Bank pay a German blocked account or Canadian GIC?
Union’s public page does not promise either payment. It says the loan is disbursed directly to the institute, while a blocked-account provider or GIC issuer is a different beneficiary. Obtain written confirmation of the permitted provider, pre-visa release condition, margin, purpose code and required evidence before relying on either route.
Can I prepay the Union Bank education loan without a charge?
A qualifying individual floating-rate education loan used for a non-business purpose has no part-prepayment or full-prepayment charge under the current RBI conduct Directions. The protection applies with or without a co-applicant, from any payment source and without a lock-in. Fixed-rate or hybrid periods need a contract check.
