More Indians search MBBS in Australia than search for any other Australian health course, and the query carries an assumption that does not survive contact with the Australian Medical Council’s register. Australia has largely stopped awarding the MBBS. Two universities still run one, two more are teaching theirs out, and every other medical school now awards a Doctor of Medicine, which is a masters level degree that does not by itself let you treat a patient.
Read on rather than closing the tab, because the honest ranking of Australian health routes for an Indian student is close to the reverse of the popular one. Nursing is deep, comparatively affordable and leads to a real licence in three years. Medicine is small, extremely expensive and ends in a queue you are not at the front of. Several allied health degrees are excellent, and several others are degrees no Australian regulator treats as a licence at all. Everything below is set against what the regulators demand after you graduate, because in health the degree is only half the transaction. Rupee figures use one rate, AUD 1 equals INR 67.71, from the Reserve Bank of Australia’s daily table F11.1 for 23 July 2026.
Is there an MBBS in Australia, and can an Indian student do it after Class 12?
Yes to the first, in a narrow sense, and rarely to the second. The Australian Medical Council accredits every primary medical program in the country and publishes the exact award title of each one. Reading that register rather than a brochure settles the question.
| Award on the AMC register | Where | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Bachelor of Medicine / Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) | Curtin University, James Cook University | The only two live MBBS programs left. Both are undergraduate entry |
| MBBS marked teach out | Adelaide University, University of Tasmania | Closed to new starters. The replacement runs alongside |
| Bachelor degree plus Doctor of Medicine | Adelaide, Bond, Charles Darwin, Charles Sturt, Monash, Newcastle with New England, UNSW, Tasmania, Western Sydney | Undergraduate entry, but you exit with an MD, not an MBBS |
| Doctor of Medicine (MD) alone | Deakin, Flinders, Griffith, Macquarie, Melbourne, Notre Dame, Queensland, Sydney, UWA, Wollongong | Graduate entry. You need a bachelor’s degree first |
| Doctor of Medicine and Surgery (MChD) | Australian National University | Graduate entry, different title, same idea |
The University of Sydney describes its own award plainly, saying the MD is a masters level degree and that graduates are eligible for provisional registration with the Medical Board of Australia. Provisional, not general. Hold that word, because section three is built on it.
For a school leaver applying from India the practical shortlist is short. James Cook University is the clearest case, a six year MBBS at Townsville and Cairns with a February start, publishing an international fee of AUD 71,383 a year for 2026, about INR 48.33 lakh a year and roughly INR 2.90 crore across the degree. Its subject prerequisites are English, Mathematical Methods and Chemistry at Units 3 and 4 with a grade of C or equivalent, and its course record notes that special entry requirements apply. Curtin publishes a separate 2027 international admissions guide for its MBBS, while its rural, equity and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pathways stay open to domestic applicants only. Everywhere else you are looking at a bachelor plus MD with a small international quota, or the graduate route, which means finishing a bachelor’s degree first and then sitting GAMSAT.
What do UCAT ANZ and GAMSAT demand, and when do you have to book?
Two tests guard two different doors, and Indian applicants routinely find the calendar too late to use either.
UCAT ANZ guards undergraduate and provisional entry medicine, dentistry and clinical science at a fixed consortium of universities. It runs in Pearson test centres, and UCAT confirms the test can be sat in test centres worldwide, though the overseas cities are visible only inside the booking system once bookings open. The 2026 cycle left no room to improvise.
| UCAT ANZ 2026 | Date or amount |
|---|---|
| Booking opens | 3 March 2026 |
| Booking deadline | 15 May 2026 |
| Final late booking deadline | 5 June 2026, with a late fee |
| Testing window | 1 July to 5 August 2026 |
| Results reach universities | Early September 2026, valid for 2027 entry only |
| Fee, test sat overseas | AUD 405, about INR 27,400 |
| Fee, test sat in Australia or New Zealand | AUD 335, plus AUD 85 if you book late |
Now line that up against an Indian board calendar. A CBSE or ISC student finishes Class 12 exams around March and has results in May. Booking for the only cycle whose score is valid for the following intake shuts on 15 May. A family that starts researching Australia after the results arrive has already missed it, and there is no way round, because UCAT states that there are no general exemptions from the test, that results cannot be carried over from one year to the next, and that sitting it twice in a cycle is candidate misconduct with all results cancelled.
One useful detail falls out of the consortium list. James Cook University is not on it, so the one undergraduate MBBS with a clearly published international fee does not run on UCAT at all.
GAMSAT guards graduate entry. The Australian Council for Educational Research runs it twice a year for applicants who have finished or are currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree, in three sections, written communication with two essays, humanities and social sciences with 62 questions, and biological and physical sciences with 75. ACER says a science degree is not always a prerequisite but that success is unlikely without knowledge and ability in the biological and physical sciences. One asymmetry is worth planning around. GAMSAT places no limit on how many times you may sit it, while UCAT allows exactly one sitting per cycle.
What does an Australian medical degree cost, and what happens the day after you graduate?
The University of Melbourne publishes an Australian full fee Doctor of Medicine at AUD 94,976 for the first year and AUD 440,784 in total, a figure that already builds in the maximum annual increase its own fees policy permits. That is the Australian full fee, not the international one. Monash tells you where the international number sits relative to it, noting that a student who gains permanent residency mid course moves to domestic full fee, a category that is only slightly less expensive than international student fees. So read AUD 440,784, about INR 2.98 crore, as a floor rather than a ceiling.
Then read the sentence Monash puts immediately after it, because no consultancy page will show it to you. Monash tells a student who becomes an Australian resident that they will be allocated a higher priority group in the Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria intern match, and are therefore more likely to secure their preferred working location on graduating. A medical school is stating in its own admissions material that residency status, not merit, moves you up the intern queue.
That queue decides everything. An Australian medical degree yields provisional registration, which the Medical Board grants to people who are qualified for general registration but must first complete a period of approved supervised practice in Australia. That supervised practice is the intern year, and it happens in a state or territory health service, not at your university. Provisional registration lasts up to 12 months and may not be renewed more than twice. The University of Queensland describes its own final semester as a transition to practice term in which you are a pre intern, which confirms the sequence. So the honest arithmetic for an Indian applicant is roughly INR 3 crore of tuition, four to six years, and then a competitive allocation for the year that converts the degree into a licence, run by services that place domestic graduates first.
If you plan to practise in India afterwards, what does the National Medical Commission require?
This decides whether an Australian medical degree makes sense for a family that expects the graduate to come home, and it deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance. The Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021, notified in the Gazette of India, set out what a foreign medical graduate must have done before India grants permanent registration.
- A course leading to the foreign medical degree of minimum duration fifty four months.
- An internship of at least twelve months in the same foreign medical institution.
- A degree with the medium of instruction in English, and the mandatory subjects in Schedule I.
- Registration with the professional regulatory body competent to grant a licence to practise in that country, at par with the licence given to a citizen of that country.
- A supervised internship in India of at least twelve months.
- A pass in the National Exit Test or another test the Commission mandates.
Schedule I goes further, requiring that the entire course, training and internship be done outside India in the same foreign medical institution, with no part of the training or internship done in India or in any country other than the one awarding the qualification. It also caps the whole thing at ten years from the date of joining.
Now hold that against the Australian structure. An Australian MD or MBBS does not contain a twelve month internship inside the degree. The internship happens after graduation, under provisional registration, in a state health service rather than in the institution that awarded the qualification. And the requirement for a licence at par with a citizen’s points at general registration, which itself depends on completing that internship. Those facts do not obviously line up with clause 4(a)(ii) and Schedule I 2(iii).
How the Commission reads your particular case is the Commission’s call and not ours, so we will not guess it. What we will say plainly is that this is the most expensive assumption in the whole plan, and that the time to get it in writing from the NMC is before you accept an offer, not in your final year. If your intention is to practise in India, this question outranks rankings, campus and city.
Why is nursing the stronger route, and which nursing degrees actually lead to registration?
Nursing inverts almost every problem above. It is three years rather than six, roughly a third of the cost, has no admission test, and the qualification itself leads to registration without a separate internship year allocated by a health service. Australia also has a great deal of it, with Anmac reporting 234 accredited programs of study across 98 accredited education providers. The one thing you must get right is which award you enrol in, because the names look interchangeable and are not.
| Award | Length | Who it is for | Leads to registration? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bachelor of Nursing | 3 years | School leavers and career changers | Yes, if it is an NMBA approved program of study |
| Master of Nursing Science, or Master of Nursing (Pre registration or Graduate Entry) | 2 years | Anyone with a bachelor’s degree in any field | Yes, if it is an NMBA approved program of study |
| Master of Nursing without a pre registration label | 1 to 2 years | Nurses who are already registered, specialising | No. It assumes you are already a nurse |
| Accelerated Bachelor of Nursing for Enrolled Nurses | 2 years | Holders of an Australian enrolled nurse qualification | Yes, but you need the EN qualification first |
That third row is where money gets wasted. A search for a master of nursing in Australia returns both kinds of degree on the same page of results, and a post registration master’s will not make you a registered nurse no matter how well you do in it. The check takes a minute. Anmac accredits the program, the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia approves it, and the Board publishes its approved programs of study in five categories, including an inactive list. If the exact award at the exact provider is not on the general registration list, it is not a registration route.
On money, UTS publishes an indicative total tuition of AUD 153,134 for international students across its three year Bachelor of Nursing, CRICOS code 019877B, about INR 1.04 crore in total. Fees vary a great deal by provider and there is no honest national league table of the cheapest one, so read the number off the provider’s own CRICOS registered course page and price the rest of the year with our cost of studying in Australia guide. Chasing the cheapest nursing course is the wrong optimisation anyway, because a cheap course that is not on the NMBA approved list costs you everything.
The graduate entry route deserves a second look from Indian students holding a bachelor’s degree in any subject. The University of Melbourne’s Master of Nursing Science takes two years, accepts an undergraduate degree in any discipline, and prepares you to graduate as a registered nurse. For a BCom or BSc graduate who did not get into medicine, that is a two year conversion into a licensed profession.
What does registration with Ahpra actually demand once you have the degree?
Fifteen National Boards regulate the health professions in Australia and Ahpra runs the machinery for all of them. Two things about that machinery surprise almost every international student.
The first is that you are already on a register. If you are enrolled in an approved program of study you do not apply for student registration, because your education provider must give your details to the Board and no fee is charged. Complaints, known as notifications, can be made about a student, and the Board can take regulatory action against one. You are inside the regulatory system from your first semester, not from your first job.
The second is how much of the graduate application has nothing to do with your degree. Ahpra recommends applying up to 90 days before you finish your course requirements, placements included, without waiting for graduation. The file is then assembled from four separate things.
- An identity check through InstaID+. They email a secure link within 48 hours and you have 30 days to use it. Miss that window and Ahpra withdraws the application and refunds the fee, so you start again with a fresh application and a fresh payment.
- A full criminal history disclosure. Every conviction, every plea or finding of guilt, and every charge, including charges resolved without a conviction. Spent convictions legislation does not apply here. The Australian check is covered by your application fee.
- An international criminal history check if you have lived overseas for six consecutive months as an adult, which catches essentially every Indian graduate. You arrange and pay for this yourself through an Ahpra approved supplier, and it is the step most likely to delay you.
- Your graduate results, sent by your provider. Ahpra aims to finalise within two weeks of receiving them, but warns that it handles about 37,000 applications across the end of year peak.
Pharmacy and psychology graduates carry extra requirements and are told to apply only once supervised practice arrangements are signed off. One piece of Ahpra’s own advice is worth repeating, which is not to use your university email for the portal, because you lose access to it after graduating and that is the address they will use to reach you.
Why does health registration ask for a higher English score than your university did?
This catches more Indian health graduates than anything else, and it turns on one phrase in the standard. There are four ways to satisfy the English language skills registration standard, and three of them depend on the words recognised country.
- Combined education pathway. At least two years of secondary education taught and assessed solely in English in a recognised country, plus your professional qualification in a recognised country.
- School education pathway. At least ten years of primary and secondary school taught and assessed solely in English in a recognised country.
- Advanced education pathway. At least six years in total of full time equivalent education, all taught and assessed solely in English in a recognised country, including your professional qualification and a degree at AQF level 7 or higher. Fully online programs do not count, and the last period of education must have finished no more than two years before you apply.
- Test pathway. The fallback, and the standard says plainly that if you have not completed any education in a recognised country, this is the pathway for you.
The recognised country list runs to thirty entries, mostly Commonwealth Caribbean territories plus Australia, Canada, Ireland, Malta, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. India is not on it, and neither is any other South Asian country.
Work that through for a real student. Indian schooling rules out the first two pathways outright. The advanced education pathway needs six years of tertiary study in a recognised country, and a three year Australian Bachelor of Nursing gives you three, with your Indian degree counting for nothing because India is not recognised. So a student who has spent three years being taught, examined and clinically assessed in English in Australia still lands on the test pathway and still has to produce an English test score to register. A four year degree followed by a two year master’s, both in Australia, would clear the six year bar. One three year degree will not.
The scores themselves changed on 23 April 2026, and the change is not what it looks like.
| Test | Overall | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 7 | 7 | 7 | 6.5 | 7 |
| OET | Not applicable | 350 | 360 | 350 | 360 |
| PTE Academic | 63 | 58 | 59 | 60 | 76 |
| TOEFL iBT | 91 | 22 | 22 | 23 | 24 |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced | 178 | 175 | 179 | 180 | 194 |
Look at the PTE row. The overall requirement fell from 66 to 63, which reads like a relaxation, while the speaking requirement rose from 66 to 76. PTE is the test Indian applicants pick most often, usually after comparing overall numbers, and anyone who chose it by reading the overall figure alone is now aiming at the wrong target. Ahpra explains the change as an alignment exercise, saying the Department of Home Affairs published changes to the tests approved for migration purposes in August 2025 and that the Boards followed the same score concordance research, and it insists the level of proficiency required has not actually changed.
Three more rules matter. Every test must be sat at a test centre, not at home. You may combine a maximum of two sittings within a 12 month period, extended from six months, but never across two different test providers, and no component in either sitting may fall below the published floor. An IELTS One Skill Retake is accepted and does not count as an extra sitting, provided it falls within 60 days of the result you are relying on.
Because all of this sits behind registration, nursing schools simply move the bar to the front. UTS asks IELTS 7.0 with 7.0 in every band for its Bachelor of Nursing, a full band above the 6.5 a general master’s usually wants, and its writing requirement of 7.0 is actually stricter than Ahpra’s 6.5. Melbourne asks 7.0 with no band below 7.0 for its Master of Nursing Science and additionally requires you to complete the NMBA English Language Skills Declaration inside the application form. Plan your test with our PTE and IELTS scores for Australia page, then check the result again against the registration table above, because for health courses the second number is the one that binds.
Which allied health degrees are a licence, and which are only a degree?
Australia regulates health professions through fifteen National Boards. If your profession has a Board, graduating from an approved program puts you on a path to a protected title. If it does not, your degree is a qualification and nothing more, which can still be the right choice, but you should choose it knowing that.
| Field | Regulated by a National Board? | What happens after you graduate |
|---|---|---|
| Nursing and midwifery | Yes, NMBA | Apply to Ahpra from an approved program. No internship year |
| Medicine | Yes, Medical Board | Provisional registration, then a competitive intern year, then general registration |
| Physiotherapy | Yes, Physiotherapy Board | An approved qualification leads to general registration directly. You may start the process in your final year |
| Pharmacy | Yes, Pharmacy Board | Provisional registration, 1,575 hours of supervised practice, an accredited intern training program, then written and oral exams |
| Psychology | Yes, Psychology Board | A six year sequence in total, and a national exam if you take an internship pathway |
| Dentistry and oral health | Yes, Dental Board | The Australian Dental Council accredits the program, then you register |
| Occupational therapy, optometry, podiatry, paramedicine, medical radiation practice, chiropractic, osteopathy, Chinese medicine | Yes | Each has its own Board and approved programs list |
| Social work | No | Self regulated. The AASW accredits programs and is the assessing authority for migration |
| Public health | No | An MPH is a degree, not a licence. There is no public health register |
| Biomedical science | No | A science degree. It is a feeder into research or a graduate entry program, not a clinical licence |
| Early childhood education and care | No | Regulated separately from health, not by Ahpra |
Three rows repay a closer look. Pharmacy has the longest tail of any allied health route. The Board’s published pathway runs from an approved degree to provisional registration, then a Board approved preceptor and premises, then an accredited intern training program, then a minimum of 1,575 hours of supervised practice, and finally a written and an oral examination before general registration. Overseas qualified pharmacists join the same path by passing the Australian Pharmacy Council’s OPRA or KAPS exam first.
Psychology is where Indian applicants most often misjudge the length. The Board requires a six year sequence of education and training, typically a four year Board approved accredited sequence plus two more years, either as an accredited master’s or through the 5+1 internship, with a national psychology exam for anyone on the internship route. The old 4+2 pathway closed to new applicants on 30 June 2022. A standalone Master of Psychology is the fifth and sixth year of that sequence, so if your first four years were an Indian BA or BSc the Board has not accredited, the master’s alone does not complete it and you will be assessed for substantial equivalence instead.
Social work is unregulated in the National Scheme sense, which does not make it a weak choice. The AASW accredits Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) and Master of Social Work (Qualifying) programs, and is the assessing authority nominated by the Federal Government for social work qualifications. Its assessment now requires a minimum of 1,000 fieldwork hours across at least two placements, up from 980. If migration is part of your plan, check that number against any course you are considering, and read our guide to getting an Indian qualification recognised in Australia for how assessing authorities work.
What changes if you already hold an Indian nursing qualification?
Everything, because you are no longer a student applicant. Anmac performs two quite different jobs that get confused constantly. It accredits courses, and separately it assesses people, completing over 17,000 skills assessments in one recent financial year for nurses and midwives applying through skilled migration. Neither of those is registration.
Registration for an overseas qualified nurse runs through the NMBA’s internationally qualified nurses and midwives process, in a published order. You begin with a Self check, which every applicant must complete before applying, then build a Portfolio, complete Orientation Part 1, and sit an examination in two parts, a multiple choice paper and an Objective Structured Clinical Examination, before applying for registration. Separate streams exist for enrolled nurses, registered nurses and midwives.
For many Indian nurses the real choice is between that route and enrolling in an Australian pre registration degree, which carries a student visa, a local qualification, local placements and a clearer path to the Subclass 485 post study work visa. Which one wins depends on how much of your Indian training the Self check credits, so run the Self check first and decide second.
- Australia has largely retired the MBBS. Curtin and James Cook still award one, Adelaide and Tasmania are teaching theirs out, and everywhere else awards a Doctor of Medicine, which the University of Sydney describes as a masters level degree.
- James Cook University is the clearest undergraduate MBBS for an international student, at AUD 71,383 a year for 2026, roughly INR 2.90 crore across six years, and it does not use UCAT.
- UCAT ANZ booking closed on 15 May 2026 for a test sat in July and August, valid only for 2027 entry. Indian board results arrive after that deadline, which is why most school leavers miss the cycle entirely.
- An Australian medical degree yields provisional registration only. General registration needs an intern year allocated by a state health service, and Monash’s own admissions page says Australian residents get a higher priority group in the Victorian intern match.
- India’s Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 require a twelve month internship in the same foreign institution and a licence at par with a citizen’s. Settle how that reads against the Australian structure with the NMC in writing before you accept an offer.
- Nursing is three years, has no admission test, and leads to registration without a separate internship. UTS publishes AUD 153,134 in total tuition for international students, about INR 1.04 crore.
- A Master of Nursing that is not labelled pre registration or graduate entry will not make you a registered nurse. Check the exact award on the NMBA approved programs list before you pay a deposit.
- India is not a recognised country in Ahpra’s English standard, so a three year Australian degree does not exempt you. You will still sit an English test for registration.
- From 23 April 2026, PTE Academic needs overall 63 but speaking 76, up from 66. The overall number fell while the hardest component rose.
- Public health, biomedical science and social work have no National Board. They are good degrees, but they are not licences, and the AASW rather than Ahpra handles social work.
Frequently asked questions
Is MBBS available in Australia for Indian students?
Only in a narrow sense. The Australian Medical Council register shows Curtin University and James Cook University still awarding an MBBS, while Adelaide and the University of Tasmania are teaching theirs out. Every other Australian medical school now awards a Doctor of Medicine. James Cook is the clearest option open to international students, at a published AUD 71,383 a year for 2026.
Can I study medicine in Australia after Class 12?
It is possible but narrow. A handful of universities run undergraduate or provisional entry medicine with small international quotas, and most of them require UCAT ANZ. The larger names, including Melbourne, Sydney and Queensland, are graduate entry, meaning you need a completed bachelor’s degree and a GAMSAT score before you can apply at all.
How much does an MD in Australia cost for an international student?
The University of Melbourne publishes AUD 94,976 for the first year and AUD 440,784 in total for its Australian full fee place. Monash notes that the domestic full fee category is only slightly less expensive than the international one, so treat roughly INR 3 crore as a floor for a four year graduate entry MD, before living costs and health cover.
Will an Australian medical degree let me practise in India?
Not automatically. India’s Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 require a course of at least 54 months, a twelve month internship in the same foreign institution, registration in that country at par with a citizen’s licence, a further twelve month supervised internship in India and a pass in the National Exit Test. The Australian internship sits after the degree and in a health service, so get the Commission’s reading in writing before you commit.
Which nursing course in Australia leads to registration as an RN?
Only a program the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia has approved for general registration, which in practice means a three year Bachelor of Nursing or a two year pre registration or graduate entry master’s. A Master of Nursing without a pre registration label is designed for nurses who are already registered and will not qualify you. Check the exact award on the Board’s approved programs list.
How much do nursing courses cost in Australia for international students?
UTS publishes an indicative total tuition of AUD 153,134 for international students across its three year Bachelor of Nursing, about INR 1.04 crore. Fees differ widely by provider, and no reliable national ranking of the cheapest course exists, so read the figure from the provider’s own CRICOS registered course page rather than from a comparison site.
What IELTS score do I need to register as a nurse in Australia?
IELTS Academic overall 7 with 7 in listening, reading and speaking and at least 6.5 in writing, sat at a test centre. Because India is not a recognised country in the standard, a three year Australian degree will not exempt you from the test. Nursing schools usually set their admission bar at the same level or slightly higher, which is why UTS asks for 7.0 in every band.
Is a Master of Public Health in Australia a registered profession?
No. Australia has fifteen National Boards and none of them covers public health, so an MPH is a degree rather than a licence to practise a registered health profession. The same is true of biomedical science. Social work is also outside the scheme, though the AASW accredits its programs and acts as the assessing authority for migration.
I am already a nurse in India. Do I have to do the degree again?
Not necessarily. The NMBA runs a separate route for internationally qualified nurses that starts with a compulsory Self check, then a Portfolio, Orientation Part 1, a multiple choice exam and an Objective Structured Clinical Examination. Run the Self check first, because its outcome tells you whether that route is open to you or whether an Australian pre registration degree is the better bet.
