A UK offer letter is not a visa. Between the day a university offers you a place and the day the Home Office grants your Student visa sit three separate gates, and Indian students routinely meet them in the wrong order or find out about them too late. The first is the CAS, the electronic acceptance record the university assigns you. The second is ATAS, a security clearance that certain postgraduate science and engineering students must hold before anything else can happen. The third is the credibility interview, the genuine-student check a caseworker can run before deciding your visa. This page explains what each one is, the exact order to do them in, and the real interview questions, every figure carrying its gov.uk or university source and its as-of date.

Rupee figures use an indicative rate of about 1 GBP to 108 INR from mid-July 2026, which moves daily, so treat the INR as a guide and the GBP as the real number.

What are the three things between a UK offer and a UK visa?

Think of your offer as the start of a short chain, not the finish line. Three things stand between that offer and the Student visa, and the order they come in is the single thing most guides get wrong. Do them out of sequence and you can lose weeks you did not budget for.

  1. ATAS first, but only if your postgraduate course is in a sensitive science or engineering subject. It is a free clearance from a UK government department, and where it is needed it must be in your hand before the university will issue your CAS.
  2. The CAS next. This is the electronic record the university assigns once you accept your place, meet every condition on the offer, and usually pay a tuition deposit. You cannot even start the visa form without the reference number it gives you.
  3. The credibility interview last, at the visa stage. A caseworker can call you to check you are a genuine student before they grant the visa, and a version of the same check can happen again when you land in the UK.

The rest of this page walks each gate in that order. If your course needs ATAS, start there today, because at current processing times it is the longest single wait in the whole chain. If it does not, your chain is just CAS then visa, with the interview as a possible step inside the visa decision. Either way, the visa itself, its fees and the money you must show are covered in our full guide to the UK Student visa for Indian students.

What is a CAS, and how do you get one?

A CAS is the electronic acceptance record your university assigns once it has confirmed your place, and you cannot apply for the visa without the reference number it carries. CAS stands for Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. Many Indian students call it a “CAS letter”, but that name is misleading, because it is not a letter you download and it is not a document you upload with your visa application. gov.uk and the university sector describe it as a virtual record held on a Home Office database, and the licensed sponsor simply sends you a reference number to type into the online form. So when someone asks for your “CAS number”, they mean this Student-route reference, not a chemistry registry code or a DTH access number that share the same three letters.

Two documents get confused here, so separate them now. The CAS number is the short code you enter on the visa application. The CAS statement is the readable page the university gives you alongside it, listing everything the record contains so you can check it. The University of Sheffield spells this out, noting the CAS number links to an electronic record that you never submit as a file. You read the statement, you enter the number.

Getting the CAS follows a fixed sequence, and each step must clear before the next. You accept an unconditional offer, you meet every remaining condition, you usually pay a tuition deposit, and only then does the university assign the CAS. The University of Manchester states the flow plainly, that a CAS is sent once you have accepted an unconditional offer, and that for a taught master’s you must first pay a non-refundable deposit of at least £2,500, roughly ₹2.7 lakh, which then counts towards your tuition. One reassuring detail for Indian families is that Manchester’s list of countries asked for a higher deposit covers Bangladesh, Ghana and Pakistan, and India is not on it, so you pay the standard deposit like most other nationalities. Choosing a sponsor that holds a valid licence matters too, since only a licensed university can assign a CAS, and our guide to the top UK universities for Indian students flags who holds one.

What should you check on your CAS before you apply?

Once the CAS is issued you get a short window to read every field and fix any error, because a wrong detail on the CAS can sink an otherwise perfect application. The university of Bristol is blunt that it is essential all information is correct on the CAS before you apply, and corrections must be made before you submit, not after. Read the CAS statement against your passport line by line.

  • Your personal details, exactly matching the passport you will use, including the spelling and date of birth.
  • Course title, start date and end date, which the Home Office uses to work out how long your visa and your funds must cover.
  • The tuition fee and any deposit already paid, so the amount you still owe is correct and lowers the money you must show.
  • Whether ATAS is required, a yes or no field on the CAS that tells you if the clearance below applies to you.
  • The qualifications listed under the evidence used to make your offer, which must match the certificates you hold.

Timing is the other trap, and it is a double one. You must apply for the visa within 6 months of receiving the CAS, and the CAS must be no more than six months old on the day you apply, and you can only apply from outside the UK up to six months before your course starts. Each CAS also works for one application only. Put together, this means a CAS issued too early can age out before you are even allowed to apply. Bristol warns directly that if your CAS is more than 6 months old your visa application may be rejected, so ask the university to time the CAS to your intended application window rather than accepting the earliest possible date.

What is ATAS, and does your course need one?

ATAS is a free security clearance that certain postgraduate science, engineering and technology students must obtain before they can study in the UK, and Indian students are not exempt from it. ATAS stands for the Academic Technology Approval Scheme, and it is issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, a UK government department. Its purpose, set out on gov.uk, is to stop knowledge that could help build weapons of mass destruction or advanced military technology from leaving with students in sensitive fields. If your course is in scope and you need it, you cannot get your CAS or your visa without it.

Whether you need one turns on two things, your nationality and your subject. On nationality, gov.uk publishes a list of 36 exempt countries, which covers the UK, the EU and EEA, and a handful of others such as the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore and South Korea. India is not on that list, so an Indian student on an in-scope course does need ATAS. On subject, ATAS applies to certain taught master’s, research master’s and PhD courses in fields identified by a code called CAH3, short for Common Aggregation Hierarchy level 3. The broad groups that can fall in scope include chemistry, physics and materials science, mathematics, computer science and artificial intelligence, most branches of engineering, and parts of biological sciences, pharmacology and medicine. Undergraduate and foundation courses are generally outside the scheme, with the exception of an undergraduate degree that has an integrated master’s year, and a postgraduate diploma or a PGCE is excluded.

You do not have to guess your subject group. The university decides whether ATAS applies and tells you the exact CAH3 code, and gov.uk confirms this is typically included on your offer letter, with the same yes or no also stated on your CAS. So the honest test is simple. Read your offer and your CAS, look for the ATAS field and the CAH3 code, and if it says ATAS is required, treat that as the first thing you do. Because this mostly hits taught and research postgraduates, it overlaps heavily with our guide to a master’s in the UK for Indian students.

How do you apply for ATAS, and how long does it take?

You apply online, it costs nothing, and at current times you should allow at least six weeks, which is why it starts the whole chain. gov.uk states there is no fee for an ATAS application, and you complete it through an ATAS account with your CAH3 code, your university and course, every optional module you plan to take or your research proposal, your supervisor’s name, two referees and your funding details. Have your offer in front of you, since the CAH3 code comes straight off it.

On timing, the current gov.uk guidance says an application takes at least 30 working days, about six weeks, and can take longer for complex cases, as of the guidance dated 24 March 2026. This is a freshness point worth flagging, because older articles still quote around 20 working days, which is now out of date. More people apply between April and August, ahead of September intakes, so the queue is longest exactly when most Indian students need it. There is no paid fast track. The practical rule is to apply the moment your offer confirms ATAS is needed, not after you have sorted everything else.

Two more points decide whether your ATAS holds. It is valid for six months for use in a visa application from the date it is issued, and once you have used it, it covers the whole length of your course. You need a fresh ATAS if your course end date slips by more than three months, or if your course content, research area or university changes. The order is strict, and this is a hidden gem most students miss. The University of Manchester states that your CAS number will not be issued until you provide your ATAS certificate, and gov.uk says you must not submit your visa application before the certificate is issued. So the true order is ATAS, then CAS, then visa. If ATAS is refused, the visa cannot go ahead, and Manchester notes a further sting, a 90-day wait before you can re-apply for the same course at the same university.

What is the credibility interview really testing?

The credibility interview is a short conversation in which a Home Office caseworker checks that you are a genuine student, and it is the human judgement layer on top of all your paperwork. The legal hook is a single line in the Immigration Rules, Appendix Student, that the applicant must be a genuine student. The Rules do not define what that means, so the real substance lives in Home Office caseworker guidance, currently the Student and Child Student guidance, version 13.0, published for staff on 26 March 2026. The caseworker only has to be satisfied on the balance of probabilities, so this is about being believable, not about passing a quiz.

That guidance lists the factors a caseworker weighs, and knowing them tells you what to prepare. They look at your immigration history, including any past visa refusals and whether you kept to the terms of previous visas. They look at your study plans, meaning whether the course is a sensible step after your last qualification, whether you have genuinely researched the course and the university, and how the course connects to what you want to do afterwards. They look at your money, and here is the sharp part, not just whether you have enough but, in the guidance’s own framing, how you were able to acquire the funds, so the source matters as much as the balance. For an Indian applicant that means being ready to explain an education loan, a parent’s savings or a scholarship clearly. They also weigh your intention to leave or to switch lawfully at the end, and your English as it comes across in the conversation itself.

The most reassuring thing in the whole process is procedural. The guidance states that a caseworker must not refuse you on genuineness grounds without interviewing you first, with only two narrow exceptions, a repeat application with nothing changed, or a large batch of near-identical applications where a sample was already tested. In plain terms, if something in your file looks unclear, you get a chance to explain it rather than a silent rejection. The interview is usually held by phone or video call, sometimes face to face at the visa application centre, and universities such as Middlesex describe it as around 10 to 20 minutes. One thing is not forgiving though. If you do not attend without a reasonable explanation, the application is refused automatically.

What credibility interview questions are asked, and what makes a strong answer?

The questions are predictable because they map straight onto the factors above, and UK universities that prep their own students publish the real ones. The table below pairs the question areas with a representative question and what a strong, genuine answer actually shows. Read the right-hand column, because the point is never to memorise a script, it is to have a true and specific answer ready.

What they probe A real question What a strong answer shows
Why the UK Why study in the UK rather than in India, the US or Canada? A specific academic reason, not just rankings, and that the UK was a considered choice
Why this university What do you know about this university and why is it right for you? Real research into the institution, its department and its support, in your own words
Why this course Which modules interest you most, and how is the course assessed? Concrete knowledge of the actual course and that it is a step up from your last degree
Link to your past How does this course relate to your previous study or work? A logical progression, and a sound reason for any gap since you last studied
Career plans What do you plan to do after the course, and where? The course is relevant to your goal and you intend to comply with your visa terms
Funding and its source Who is paying, and how did you get the money? A credible, documented source, an education loan, family savings or a scholarship
Living arrangements Where will you live and how will you manage your costs? A realistic plan that fits the money you have shown

Sources for these questions are UK universities’ own preparation pages, including the University of the West of England, the University of the West of Scotland and Oxford Brookes, all of which run mock interviews for their offer holders. The specific wording of credibility interview questions varies, but the areas do not. If you can talk naturally about all seven rows using details that are true for you, you are prepared. For a full run through the rest of the visa, from funds to the health surcharge, pair this with our UK Student visa guide rather than treating the interview as a separate exam.

What gets people refused, and how do you avoid it?

Most well-prepared Indian students pass, but a handful of avoidable mistakes turn a routine check into a refusal, and the biggest one is sounding rehearsed. Universities are unusually direct about this. The University of the West of England warns that reading from a script can be seen as not answering truthfully, and that generic answers anyone could give carry no weight. A caseworker who hears the same polished lines they have heard fifty times reads that as coaching, not conviction. Answers that contradict your own application form are the other classic failure, so know what you wrote and stay consistent with it.

It helps to know the exact ground you would be refused under, because it is not what a lot of older articles claim. A not-genuine-student refusal is made under the genuine student rule in Appendix Student, not under the old paragraph 320(7A) that many outdated guides still cite. A separate and more serious ground applies if you submit false documents or make false representations, which now sits under the Immigration Rules Part Suitability, renamed in November 2025. The practical message is the same for both, tell the truth and let your real documents carry you.

Two counter-intuitive points close the loop, and both are hidden gems worth knowing. First, the caseworker guidance explicitly says you must not be refused for not knowing local trivia, giving the example that a lack of knowledge of bus routes or the geography of your town cannot be a reason to refuse you. So the hours some students spend memorising campus maps are wasted, while the funding source they skimmed over is what actually decides it. Second, the check does not end when the visa is granted. The University of the West of Scotland warns that you can be questioned again at the UK immigration gates, and that if an officer finds you simply cannot hold a conversation in English, your visa can be curtailed on the spot. Your live English in that conversation counts even though you already passed IELTS, so keep speaking, not reciting.

Key takeaways

  • An offer is not a visa. Three gates sit between them, ATAS if your course needs it, the CAS, then the credibility interview at the visa stage.
  • A CAS is an electronic record, not a “CAS letter” you download. You enter only the CAS number, and you check everything against the CAS statement before applying.
  • Get your CAS by accepting an unconditional offer, meeting all conditions and usually paying a deposit, often at least £2,500 at a Russell Group university. Time the CAS to your application window so it does not age out past six months.
  • Indian students are not exempt from ATAS. If your postgraduate science or engineering course needs it, apply first, because it is free but takes at least 30 working days as of March 2026, and the university will not issue your CAS without it.
  • The credibility interview checks you are a genuine student. A caseworker weighs your course logic, your plans and the source of your funds, and cannot refuse on genuineness grounds without interviewing you first.
  • Avoid scripted answers and anything that contradicts your form. You cannot be refused for not knowing bus routes, and the check can happen again at the UK border.

Frequently asked questions

Is a CAS the same as a CAS letter?

They refer to the same thing, but “CAS letter” is a misnomer. A CAS is an electronic record the university holds on a Home Office database, not a letter you download. You are given a CAS number to type into the visa form, and a readable CAS statement to check the details against. You never upload a CAS document with your application.

What is a CAS number and where do I get it?

A CAS number is the Student-route reference a licensed UK university assigns after you accept an unconditional offer, meet the conditions and usually pay a deposit. It is not the chemistry or DTH code that shares the letters. The university emails it to you, and you enter it on the online Student visa application, which you cannot submit without it.

How long does a CAS take to be issued?

It depends on the university and on you clearing every condition first. Many issue the CAS a few months before the course start once you have accepted the unconditional offer, uploaded your documents and paid any deposit. Ask your university for its timeline, and make sure the CAS is dated to fall within six months of when you plan to apply for the visa.

Do Indian students need an ATAS certificate?

Only if your course is in scope, but India is not on the exempt-nationality list, so you are not exempt by nationality. ATAS applies to certain postgraduate science, engineering and technology courses identified by a CAH3 code. Your offer letter and CAS state whether ATAS is required. If they say yes, you must get it before your CAS and visa.

How long does ATAS take and does it cost anything?

ATAS is free and applied for online. Current gov.uk guidance says it takes at least 30 working days, about six weeks, and longer for complex cases, as of March 2026. Demand peaks from April to August before autumn intakes, and there is no paid fast track. Apply the moment your offer confirms it is needed, since your CAS will not be issued until you have it.

What is a UK credibility interview and who has to do it?

It is a short interview, usually by phone or video, in which a Home Office caseworker checks you are a genuine student. Not every applicant is interviewed, but a caseworker cannot refuse you on genuineness grounds without interviewing you first. It lasts roughly 10 to 20 minutes and covers your course, university, plans and how you are funding your studies.

What questions are asked in a UK student credibility interview?

Expect why you chose the UK, this university and this course, how it links to your past study or work, your career plans, and who is funding you and how you obtained the money. Answers should be specific and true to you, not scripted. Reading from a prepared script or giving generic answers is treated as a red flag and can lead to refusal.

Can I be refused or questioned after my visa is granted?

Yes. The genuine-student check can happen again at the UK border. If an immigration officer finds you cannot hold a basic conversation in English, your visa can be curtailed on arrival, even though you passed IELTS. Keep your answers natural and consistent with your application, and be ready to explain your course and funding again if asked.
