An Austrian institution checks four parts of an international application. They are academic fit, document form, language evidence and course selection. There is no national Indian checklist. An Indian applicant sends the file directly to the chosen institution, which decides whether the qualification, subjects and evidence fit the course. The useful first move is to open the exact programme page, record its earliest deadline and then build the file in the order shown here.
This page is for Indian bachelor’s and master’s applicants who already have a possible course in mind. It explains university admission, apostille, translation, language proof and conditional decisions. The study in Austria guide holds the wider country decision. The Austria student visa guide owns residence documents and travel permission, while the Austria intake guide covers a wider application calendar.
What decides admission in Austria?
The chosen institution decides admission. Austria has no central application service for these applications, and OeAD doesn’t accept a student’s file. Its national guidance says that applications go directly to the university or university of applied sciences. The course page and admissions office therefore control the current portal, evidence, selection procedure and deadline.
Applications must be sent directly to the university or the university of applied sciences.OeAD, application and admission
For bachelor’s entry, a foreign school certificate normally needs to support direct admission to the corresponding course in the country where it was issued. Check whether the Class XII route supports entry to the same level and subject in India, then provide any course-access evidence named by the Austrian institution. This doesn’t turn completion of Class XII into automatic Austrian eligibility. The institution still checks equivalence, subjects and any course-specific conditions under the Austrian government’s non-EU admission framework.
For master’s entry, the usual starting point is a relevant bachelor’s degree worth at least 180 ECTS or six semesters. ECTS is Austria’s study-credit unit. Here, 180 ECTS is the credit load normally completed across six semesters. Relevance matters as much as the credit floor. The Austrian institution evaluates the previous degree during admission. Nostrification is a separate formal recognition that equates a foreign degree with an Austrian degree for a defined legal purpose. An applicant does not normally complete that process merely to apply for a further degree because the institution assesses the previous degree during admission, as the government’s recognition guidance explains.
| Review | Question being decided | Possible result |
|---|---|---|
| Academic eligibility | Does the previous school certificate or degree support this level and subject? | Eligible, eligible with conditions, or refused |
| Document form | Are the required records complete, readable and correctly certified? | Complete file or an amendment request |
| Language | Does the evidence meet the course’s German or English rule? | Accepted proof, prescribed exam, or missing condition |
| Selection | Has the applicant passed any programme test, portfolio or interview? | Place, waiting list, or rejection |
Treat every published percentage as institution-specific. The University of Vienna currently says a 12-year Indian school-leaving certificate can be processed at 85 per cent or above, with every application reviewed individually. That figure isn’t an Austrian cutoff. From winter semester 2026/27, the university also requires applicants educated in India to complete an in-person VFS competence check before applying.
TU Graz has its own India rules. Its competence-check guidance starts the requirement from winter semester 2026/27 and says the check does not replace the formal and academic review. The university also publishes separate master’s screening figures based on the Indian institution category. The University of Vienna India page and TU Graz India document page show why one university’s country rule can’t be copied to another.
At the University of Vienna, the applicant books an appointment, pays about EUR 100 to VFS and attends in person. VFS checks identity, the documents for the chosen programme and general competence in named subjects. The applicant uploads the VFS participation certificate in u:space, while VFS sends the result directly to the university. The university then reviews both the application and that result. TU Graz uses the same broad appointment, in-person check and direct-result sequence, but its own page controls the booking and application instructions.
In what order should an Indian applicant work?
The reliable sequence begins with the course, not with getting every certificate apostilled. The programme determines the academic level, teaching language, selection procedure and deadline. Its institution then determines which India-issued records need certification, when originals appear and whether a competence check comes before portal submission.
- Fix the course and institution. Record the degree level, language, intake and selection procedure from the current programme page.
- Find the controlling date. An admission-test registration or India-specific document date may close before the general application period.
- Map academic evidence. Bachelor’s applicants match Class X, Class XII, subjects and board records. Master’s applicants match the degree, transcript, credits and course relevance.
- Complete any pre-application check. This includes the institution-specific VFS competence route where it applies.
- Prepare certification and translation. Follow the issuing country’s route and the institution’s exact document list.
- Submit through the stated channel. A public university may use a portal plus later original checks. A UAS may screen the file before an interview or test.
- Read the decision line by line. The letter can require supplementary exams, missing evidence, original presentation or later enrolment steps.
This order saves work because legalisation is document-specific. An institution may ask for an apostilled degree but not every supporting record, or it may accept scans during selection and request legalised originals only after acceptance. Preparing a large generic bundle can cost time without producing the file the institution actually reviews.
The sequence also keeps admission separate from immigration. A university letter can support a residence application, but it does not itself grant entry to Austria. Likewise, residence permission does not remove an academic or language condition in the admission decision. The academic route ends at completed enrolment, while immigration remains a separate process.
Which Indian documents need apostille or translation?
India-issued public education documents follow the Hague Apostille route when an Austrian institution requires legalisation. The Austrian Embassy New Delhi says an apostille is used and no further embassy or consular legalisation is required. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs includes degree, diploma, matriculation and secondary certificates among the education records its process can cover.
No further legalization by the Embassy or a Consulate is required.Austrian Embassy New Delhi, legalisation
The origin of the document controls the legalisation route, not the student’s passport. An Indian citizen holding a qualification issued in another country follows the certification rule for that issuing country. For India-issued records, the current MEA apostille procedure is the relevant Indian starting point.
| Item | Typical purpose | Certification or translation question | Timing question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passport identity page | Identity and citizenship | A clear scan is normally requested. The named admission lists do not ordinarily ask for its apostille | At portal submission |
| Class X and XII records | Bachelor’s eligibility, subjects and marks | The institution may require the leaving certificate, all pages, subject list and apostille | Before the bachelor application deadline |
| Degree certificate | Master’s eligibility | Apostille may be required. A completion confirmation is accepted only where the institution permits it | Final certificate or allowed substitute by the stated date |
| Transcript | Courses, grades, credits and subject relevance | The university may require credit points, hours and a grading scale, with legalisation as stated | Every completed semester needed for review |
| Language certificate | German or English competence | Usually submitted as the recognised test record, subject to score and age rules | At application or before enrolment, according to the route |
| Certified translation | Makes a non-English or non-German document usable in review | Translate the complete legalised document, including stamps, when the institution requires this order | After apostille where the apostille itself needs translation |
| Originals | Final authenticity check | Some institutions require originals with the application, others only after acceptance | Institution-specific |
English originals are accepted without translation in the current admission instructions from the University of Vienna, University of Graz, TU Wien, TU Graz and FH Upper Austria. This is not a promise that every English document needs no other handling. An English degree may still require apostille, and a residence authority may apply a different translation rule from the university.
Where both steps apply, legalisation normally comes before translation so the apostille, seals and stamps can be translated with the record. The University of Vienna also warns that the apostille must authenticate the signature of the issuing educational institution. An apostille that authenticates only a notary or translation agency signature may not meet that university’s rule. Its legalisation and translation page is a useful worked example, not a substitute for another institution’s list.
Original handling differs sharply. The TU Graz international master’s procedure uses an online application and original documents. The FH Upper Austria process accepts scans at application and requests original legalised documents after acceptance. This is why the safest file table has a separate column for portal scan, post, original presentation and post-selection evidence.
Can you get admission without IELTS?
Yes, an Austrian course may accept evidence other than IELTS, but there is no general Indian waiver. Institution pages normally state a level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, or CEFR, and a list of accepted proofs. The phrase without IELTS can therefore describe an alternative test, a qualifying prior-study route or a prescribed supplementary English examination. It does not mean that English evidence disappears.
| Route | What it actually means | Indian applicant consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Alternative test | The institution accepts another named certificate at its published score | The exact certificate, section scores and validity period still apply |
| Prior study exemption | The institution accepts a qualifying degree or school record from specified countries | English-medium education in India is not automatically included |
| Supplementary English exam | The admission decision prescribes an examination before regular study | This is conditional progress, not an English waiver |
| Medium-of-instruction letter | The applicant offers a letter saying the previous course was taught in English | It works only if the exact institution accepts it |
FH Upper Austria expressly says that medium-of-instruction confirmations from schools, universities or ministries are not accepted for most nationalities, including Indian applicants. The FH Upper Austria language page turns a common assumption into a clear no for that institution.
The University of Vienna’s general B2 route accepts certain English-taught previous study only when it was completed in listed countries, and India is not on that list. Its published alternative includes IELTS Academic with an overall band score of 6.5, alongside other named evidence on the English proficiency page. A specific curriculum can set a different level or evidence route.
An English-taught master’s usually removes the need to prove German for that course, not the need to prove English. German-taught routes can divide the requirement into two levels. In the current University of Vienna and TU Graz procedures, A2 supports the application or preparation route, while C1 is needed before regular German-taught study.
TU Graz publishes another possibility for covered English routes. If the English proof is missing, the university can prescribe a supplementary English examination in the admission letter. The applicant must pass it before starting the bachelor’s programme. The TU Graz English guidance supports a conditional route, not a promise of admission without language evidence.
Do public universities and UAS institutions admit differently?
Yes. A public-university application often centres on formal and academic equivalence, followed by enrolment if the decision is positive. Some courses add an admission or aptitude procedure. A university of applied sciences, commonly called a UAS or FH, normally places a programme selection stage after formal screening.
| Stage | Public university pattern | UAS or FH pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Application | Institution portal with academic and formal document review | Programme application with formal screening |
| Selection | Only named programmes may add a test or ranking procedure | An entrance procedure is normally part of admission |
| Typical controls | Document equivalence, language and any course-specific test | Documents, test, interview or portfolio depending on the programme |
| Conditional result | May prescribe language or subject exams, or master’s supplementary courses | May reserve the place while a degree, language proof or formal document remains outstanding |
| Originals | Portal, post and enrolment rules differ by university | Some UAS institutions request legalised originals only after selection |
OeAD says all UAS applicants complete an entrance procedure, commonly using written material, tests and an interview. FH Upper Austria says qualified candidates are invited to an interview and that some programmes add a test or portfolio. The selection stage decides who receives a limited study place, while the academic record still has to satisfy formal entry.
A UAS conditional acceptance can be narrower than a public-university admission letter with supplementary exams. FH Upper Austria uses it when a selected applicant still lacks a degree certificate, language proof or another formal document. The missing evidence must be supplied before regular admission. The FH Upper Austria FAQ also distinguishes a waiting-list position from acceptance.
Institution type alone does not predict when originals are due, so document timing remains a separate course-level check.
What does your admission decision mean?
An admission letter is a formal decision, but it does not always mean that the student can begin regular classes immediately. The decisive wording is the condition attached to the offer. It can require German, a subject examination, master’s supplementary courses, a missing certificate or a later enrolment step.
Having received the admission letter does not mean that you are already admitted.University of Vienna, English-taught master’s admission
| Message | Meaning | Next institutional step | Not yet achieved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Application submitted | The portal has received the file for review | Answer any amendment request and preserve the submission record | No admission or enrolment |
| Positive decision without supplementary exams | Academic admission has been approved without those extra exams | Complete identity, original, fee and enrolment steps named in the letter | The letter alone may not create student status |
| German supplementary exam | Academic admission is conditional on the prescribed German exam | Use the letter for the named preparation programme or exam route | No regular German-taught study yet |
| Subject supplementary exams | The institution has identified specific school-subject differences | Complete only the exams written in the decision | No general foundation-year entitlement |
| Master’s supplements up to 30 ECTS | Admission is granted with additional subject courses at the University of Vienna | Enrol and complete the prescribed courses under the decision | These are not necessarily pre-entry preparation exams |
| UAS conditional acceptance | The selection result is positive but formal evidence remains missing | Supply the named document by its deadline | No regular admission until the condition clears |
| Waiting list | No study place is currently allocated | Follow the institution’s waiting-list process and keep alternatives active | No offer and no enrolment |
Master’s supplements need careful reading. The University of Vienna can admit an applicant where subject differences amount to no more than 30 ECTS, then require those courses in addition to the master’s curriculum. If the difference exceeds 30 ECTS in this University of Vienna route, direct admission is refused. A separate non-degree route can reduce the difference before a fresh application, but it is not a promise of later admission.
This master’s condition is different from a preparatory German or mathematics exam written into a bachelor admission decision. One set of courses is completed alongside or after master’s enrolment. The other must clear a prescribed pre-degree gap before regular study begins. The wording and ECTS amount in the decision identify which route applies.
When does a University Preparation Programme apply?
A University Preparation Programme applies after an Austrian university issues an admission decision prescribing supplementary examinations. It is not an open foundation year that a student joins before applying. Vienna’s VWU states that registration without an admission letter is not possible, and the Graz programme also requires a valid acceptance letter from a participating university.
The admission letter controls the subjects. VWU covers German, English, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, history and geography, but a student prepares only for the examinations named in the decision. The programme does not independently decide which gaps an Indian qualification has.
Registration without an admission letter is not possible.OeAD, Vienna preparation programme registration
Course attendance is not always compulsory for every prescribed exam. VWU and the Graz preparation programme publish routes for sitting certain supplementary examinations without attending a preparation course. The current exam registration, permitted attempts and language conditions remain programme-specific. The VWU examination page explains this distinction for Vienna.
Travel planning can begin before the main university semester. VWU’s winter 2026/27 process placed the German placement test in person in Vienna and did not let the applicant choose the test date. Those dates expire with the cycle, but the process shows why an admission decision with a preparation condition can alter both the academic and travel calendar.
Which deadline controls the application?
The earliest mandatory event controls the application. Austria’s general public-university orientation dates are 5 September for winter and 5 February for summer, but the government expressly allows different programme dates. The OeAD Study Guide says admission-test registration can take place up to 6 months before the semester begins.
| Route | Published date or window | Planning meaning |
|---|---|---|
| General public-university orientation | 5 September for winter, 5 February for summer | Not universal and not safe for a course with a special procedure |
| University of Vienna general non-EU application, winter 2026/27 | 22 June to 3 August 2026 | The application period ended before the general September date |
| University of Vienna admission-test courses, 2026/27 | 2 March to 4 May 2026 | A once-a-year course procedure can close months earlier |
| TU Graz international master’s without admission procedure | 1 May to 15 August for winter, 1 December to 15 January for summer | The third-country window follows its own calendar |
| VWU winter 2026/27 first registration | 31 July to 13 August 2026 | Preparation registration follows the admission letter and has a separate date |
Deadline examples checked on 15 August 2026
The closed dates are evidence of process, not future deadlines. The current University of Vienna calendar is published on its application and admission deadlines page. Before applying for a later intake, recheck the live deadline, competence-check window, accepted certificate list and preparation registration date.
A workable calendar is read backwards. First comes a programme selection or country-specific screening date. Portal submission follows after the necessary competence check, apostille and translation. Institutional assessment produces the decision. Any preparation registration then follows that letter. Enrolment closes the academic process, while residence and travel continue separately.
Students comparing more than one course should keep one row per institution, even when the degree name is similar. The row needs a selection date, portal deadline, India rule, document form, language proof and likely decision type. The Austria universities comparison helps separate public universities, technical universities and UAS institutions before this application table is built.
- Admission is decided by the chosen institution, not by OeAD or one Austria-wide percentage rule.
- For India-issued public education documents, apostille replaces further Austrian embassy legalisation where legalisation is required.
- Legalisation normally precedes translation, and English originals may still need apostille.
- Without IELTS means an accepted alternative route, not the absence of English evidence.
- A positive letter can still require supplementary exams, missing documents or a separate enrolment step.
- A University Preparation Programme begins only after the admission decision prescribes its exams.
Common questions
Is 85 per cent required for every Austrian university?
No. The 85 per cent figure belongs to the University of Vienna’s current India guidance for a 12-year school-leaving certificate. It permits individual processing, not guaranteed admission. Other institutions publish different thresholds or no single percentage. The chosen course’s academic, subject, language and selection rules still apply.
Does every Indian applicant need a VFS competence check?
No. It is not an Austria-wide condition. The University of Vienna and TU Graz currently require it for applicants educated in India from winter semester 2026/27, with institution-specific instructions. The check takes place before application in those routes and does not replace academic review, legalisation, language proof or a programme test.
Do Indian certificates need Austrian Embassy legalisation?
Not after a valid Hague Apostille where the admission process requires legalisation. The Austrian Embassy New Delhi says no further embassy or consular legalisation is required for apostilled Indian public documents. The institution still decides which education records require an apostille and whether originals or legalised copies are needed.
Must English Indian documents be translated into German?
Not under the current admission rules at several major universities and FH Upper Austria. They require translation when a document is neither German nor English. An English record can still require apostille, and immigration authorities may use different translation rules. The university’s admission list therefore cannot be reused as a residence checklist.
Can an Indian medium-of-instruction letter replace IELTS?
Only where the exact institution accepts it. FH Upper Austria expressly rejects medium-of-instruction confirmations for most nationalities, including Indian applicants. The University of Vienna’s general prior-study route lists specific countries and does not include India. An alternative recognised test or a programme-specific rule may still provide a route without IELTS.
Is conditional admission the same as enrolment?
No. A conditional decision identifies something still to be completed, such as German, a subject examination, a degree certificate or language proof. Even an unconditional positive letter can require identity checks, originals, fee payment and formal enrolment. The letter also does not grant Austrian immigration permission, which remains a separate process.
Can I join VWU before applying to a university?
No. Vienna’s University Preparation Programme requires an admission letter that names the supplementary examination. The university first evaluates the qualification and decides which German or subject gaps apply. VWU then supports the prescribed route. It is not a general foundation year open independently to every Indian Class XII applicant.
