Austria student visa requirements for Indian students on courses longer than six months follow a 2-stage route. The first stage is an in-person Student Residence Permit application in New Delhi, followed by the wait for an Austrian decision in India. The second is Visa D after approval, which allows entry and collection of the residence card. Visa D isn’t the permission for a multi-year degree.

This page is for an Indian applicant with Austrian admission, including a conditional decision that requires an entrance or supplementary examination. The 2026 funds base for 12 months is EUR 8,670.96, about INR 9.57 lakh, below age 24 or EUR 15,700.68, about INR 17.33 lakh, from the 24th birthday, before rent excess, insurance and regular burdens. The residence file also needs a six-month money trail and at least three months of accommodation evidence. These tasks sit inside the wider study in Austria plan, but they begin from the official residence route rather than a generic visa category.

Which permission does an Indian student need for Austria?

An Indian student taking an eligible course for more than six months normally needs a Student Residence Permit. It is the long-stay legal status. OeAD’s current student residence guidance places Visa D after the positive residence decision for a visa-required applicant.

Visa D is the national visa used to enter Austria and collect the approved card in this route. It permits a stay of 91 days to six months and can’t be extended in Austria under the Austrian Foreign Ministry visa rules. It doesn’t replace the residence permit for a multi-year degree.

Do you have the right stage? The residence application creates the long-stay decision. Visa D provides the later entry window.
Permission What it does When an Indian applicant uses it What it does not do
Student Residence Permit Creates the legal basis for eligible study exceeding six months Applied for in person before travel in the standard New Delhi route It does not place an entry visa in the passport
Visa D Allows entry after the positive residence decision and supports card collection Applied for after the approval notification It is not the multi-year study permission and cannot be extended in Austria

A first student permit is generally issued for 12 months. Passport validity can shorten that period, so check the passport before filing rather than only before travel. Regular degree study at a public university, university of applied sciences, accredited private university or teacher-education college can support the permit. A short or stand-alone language course should not be assumed to qualify.

What is the Austria student residence sequence from India?

The standard Indian route begins with the Austrian admission decision and the embassy’s residence instructions. The Austrian Embassy New Delhi says the residence application is generally filed in person before travel and the applicant waits in India for the decision. Its current application page directs stays over six months to the embassy’s residence email channel, while visa applications are handled through VFS.

Step Your action Who handles it Output needed for the next step
1 Secure admission or the qualifying conditional decision Austrian institution Admission evidence for residence filing
2 Build the residence file and email for the current appointment instructions Austrian Embassy New Delhi Written filing instructions and appointment
3 Submit the Student Residence Permit application in person Embassy receives it, Austrian settlement authority decides it Positive residence notification
4 Apply for Visa D through the route then instructed Embassy and current Austria VFS partner in India Visa D in the passport
5 Enter Austria, register the address, finish enrolment and activate insurance Local registration, institution and insurer Current evidence for card collection
6 Collect the residence card within both live deadlines Competent Austrian residence authority Residence card

The embassy is the receiving post, not the final decision-maker. The competent settlement authority in Austria decides the file based on the intended place of residence, as the Federal Ministry of the Interior procedure explains. The written embassy reply should control the first residence step rather than a similar-sounding VFS category.

How early should you start the Austria residence application?

Preparation can begin up to 12 months before intended travel, with the first application submitted six months before entry where possible. The residence decision normally takes 90 days after submission. If the authority asks for further documents, the period can extend by another 90 days. This is not a promise that every file will take the same time.

Apostilles and translations can begin early, but the police clearance needs careful timing. OeAD says the criminal record certificate for a first application must not be older than three months when submitted. A certificate obtained too early can expire while the applicant waits for the appointment.

The application for a residence permit must generally be submitted in person at the Austrian Embassy in New Delhi before travelling to Austria.Austrian Embassy New Delhi, studying in Austria

A positive residence notification starts two more clocks. A visa-required applicant must seek Visa D within three months of notification. The residence card must be collected in Austria within six months of notification and within the validity printed on Visa D. Both dates belong beside the intake and enrolment dates.

Which documents belong in the Austria student residence file?

The live document list and current official form control the file. The current residence form is marked 07/2025. It must be completed and signed personally. The applicant carries originals and the photocopy set requested by the embassy.

All-risks means health cover broad enough for treatment in Austria beyond emergency journey cover. ÖGK is the Austrian Health Insurance Fund. Eligible students may declare that they will take its student self-insurance after entry.

Item Current evidence point Timing or handling check
Application form Current completed and personally signed residence form Replace an old saved copy with the live version
Passport Valid passport plus copies, including all pages for the first application Short validity can shorten the permit
Photograph Recent passport-standard colour photo, 3.5 x 4.5 cm Not older than six months
Admission Admission, enrolment or qualifying conditional decision Match the normal or examination branch
Police clearance Criminal record certificate from the country of residence and, if required, origin Not older than three months at application
Funds 12-month amount, six-month account trail, source proof and regular-expense declaration Show credible access from Austria
Accommodation At least three months of Austrian housing evidence with monthly cost The cost enters the funds calculation
Health insurance All-risks cover in Austria or an eligible declaration to take ÖGK student insurance after entry Travel insurance is a separate Visa D requirement

The authority can ask for additional or updated material even when the initial list is complete. The university admission file and the residence file also have different purposes. The Austria university admission requirements guide covers Class XII, degree, transcript and language evidence required by the institution.

How much proof of funds is required in 2026?

The 2026 age-based amounts must be shown for 12 months in advance. The Federal Ministry of the Interior’s 2026 livelihood brochure supports EUR 722.58 per month for a student under 24 and EUR 1,308.39 from the 24th birthday. The applicant’s age at the relevant assessment determines the row.

Applicant age Monthly threshold 12-month base Approximate INR base
Under 24 EUR 722.58 EUR 8,670.96 INR 9.57 lakh
From the 24th birthday EUR 1,308.39 EUR 15,700.68 INR 17.33 lakh

2026 funds base for one student, with dated approximate INR

Minimum planning amount = 12 x age-based monthly threshold + 12 x max(0, monthly accommodation cost minus EUR 386.43) + insurance provision + authority-adjusted regular burdens

The EUR 386.43 housing benchmark is not a rent budget. It is the 2026 point above which the monthly excess is added for all 12 months. Insurance provision and declared regular obligations, such as loan or maintenance payments, can raise the amount further.

In the formula, max means the rent addition is zero when monthly housing costs EUR 386.43 or less. When rent is higher, only the excess enters the 12-month calculation.

An under-24 student paying EUR 500 monthly rent has a rent excess of EUR 113.57. The base plus 12 months of that excess is EUR 10,033.80 before insurance and other burdens. At the ECB reference rate for 14 August 2026, EUR 1 was INR 110.3818, so the worked amount is about INR 11.08 lakh. The exchange rate is a dated planning conversion, not the authority’s INR requirement.

What proof of funds can an Indian applicant use?

Proof of funds is an evidence package, not a payment to the Austrian government and not only the final bank balance. OeAD asks for access to the funds from Austria, six months of statements, evidence of origin and a declaration of regular expenses. A last-minute credit without a documented source leaves the central question unanswered.

Source Core evidence Availability point Weak-file pattern
Own savings Applicant account, six-month statements and income or savings origin Funds remain accessible from Austria Large unexplained recent deposit
Parents or sponsor Sponsor declaration, relationship where relevant, statements, employment, salary or tax evidence Support is freely available to the applicant Balance shown without sponsor capacity or origin
Education loan Sanction and disbursement terms plus any linked account evidence Amount can be drawn for the Austrian stay Approval letter that does not show usable access
Scholarship Official award showing amount, duration and payment terms Award covers the period and costs claimed Offer without a clear payable amount
Combined sources Each source documented separately, then reconciled to the total No double-counting and a clear applicant trail Several figures with no total or access explanation

The official residence guidance describes accessible applicant-linked funds, sponsor support, scholarships and loans. It does not prescribe a product called a German blocked account. A bank product can be used only if its ownership, access and source evidence meet the Austrian file. The label alone proves nothing.

What housing and insurance evidence is needed?

Provide Austrian accommodation evidence for at least three months, such as a tenancy agreement, student residence agreement or reservation, with the monthly cost visible. An informal plan to find a room after arrival is not the evidence requested. The monthly figure also belongs in the funds formula.

Stage Evidence needed What to keep separate
Residence application All-risks health insurance valid in Austria, or an eligible declaration to take ÖGK student self-insurance after entry This is assessed for residence, not only the journey
Visa D and travel Travel medical insurance valid for Austria and Schengen with at least EUR 30,000 cover, including return transport called repatriation Travel cover does not automatically satisfy long-stay residence insurance
After arrival Activate the insurance pledged in the residence file and retain confirmation ÖGK eligibility and enrolment documents still have to be checked
ÖGK student self-insurance Current 2026 contribution is EUR 78.84 per month for eligible students The contribution and eligibility can change

The current Austrian Health Insurance Fund student sheet lists enrolment, Austrian residence registration, passport and prior-insurance information among the relevant evidence. A policy marketed as student or visa insurance is not enough by itself. Its coverage needs to match the specific stage.

For residence filing, the authority decides whether the submitted policy or ÖGK declaration is sufficient. Check the coverage exclusions and start date before using either route.

Which residence documents need apostille or translation?

India and Austria use the Hague Apostille route for relevant Indian public documents. The Austrian Embassy New Delhi legalisation page says a valid apostille needs no further embassy or consular authentication. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs procedure gives the current authorised channels and document handling.

Apostilles do not require further authentication.Austrian Embassy New Delhi, legalisation

Where translation is required, complete legalisation first so the apostille, seals and stamps can be translated with the record. The OeAD legalisation sheet supports that order.

The university’s translation rule does not control the residence file. New Delhi residence guidance and OeAD wording are not identical on English documents, and the deciding authority can request German. The current written appointment instructions need to confirm which residence documents require certified German translation. The admission guide separately covers legalisation for university entry.

Can conditional admission support the residence application?

Yes, where the Austrian decision requires an entrance or supplementary examination and fits the official student route. The conditional branch exists because final enrolment, concrete housing and final insurance may depend on passing the examination in Austria.

  1. Obtain the university decision naming the required examination.
  2. File the residence application in India with the permitted preliminary maintenance and accommodation evidence.
  3. After the positive residence decision, obtain Visa D and travel inside its validity.
  4. Take the examination, complete enrolment and activate the required insurance.
  5. Give the Austrian authority final admission, funds, accommodation and insurance evidence, then collect the card.

This is not permission to file with only a plan. The initial evidence still has to be credible, and the authority decides whether the conditions are met. The Austria admission guide explains how a supplementary-exam decision differs from regular enrolment.

How much do the residence permit and Visa D cost?

The current Student Residence Permit application fee is EUR 218 for applications made from 1 January 2026. It is paid at application and is not refunded after refusal or withdrawal. The general Visa D fee is EUR 195 for an applicant above age six. New Delhi collects consular fees in INR at its consular exchange rate.

Item Current figure Dated approximate INR Planning note
Student Residence Permit application EUR 218 INR 24,100 Paid at application and non-refundable
Visa D for applicant above age six EUR 195 INR 21,500 Separate stage after residence approval
ÖGK student self-insurance in 2026 EUR 78.84 per month INR 8,700 per month Only for an eligible student after the required steps
Residence decision period Normally 90 days Not applicable Can extend by another 90 days if more documents are required

The INR figures use the dated ECB rate and are not the embassy’s collection rate. VFS service, courier, apostille channel, certified translation, document copies, travel insurance and travel costs remain separate. No single official total covers every applicant, so do not budget from the two government fees alone. The cost of studying in Austria guide holds the wider first-year budget.

What must you do after arriving in Austria?

The Austrian address must be registered within three working days of moving in. The accommodation provider signs the residence registration form, commonly called the Meldezettel. The Austrian government registration page controls this local step.

  1. Register the address and keep the signed registration confirmation.
  2. Complete enrolment or the examination named in a conditional decision.
  3. Activate the health insurance promised in the residence file.
  4. Bring the current funds, housing, enrolment, registration and insurance evidence requested by the authority.
  5. Collect the residence card before both the Visa D validity and six-month notification limit expire.

The authority can ask for fresh evidence at collection even when an earlier version was in the file. Approval does not finish every residence condition. Card collection completes the first application sequence.

When do you renew, and does the student card permit work?

Renew from three months before expiry, and no, the student card is not itself an employment permit. The student files in person with the competent Austrian authority before the current permit ends. The Austrian government renewal rule says a timely application keeps the student lawfully resident while the decision is pending.

Renewal normally requires study progress of at least 16 ECTS or eight semester hours in the preceding academic year. ECTS is the European study-credit unit, with 60 ECTS representing a full-time academic year. A doctoral student may instead use the recognised supervisor confirmation under the OeAD renewal sheet.

A pending renewal preserves residence in Austria, but it does not automatically prove re-entry after the old card expires. The authority needs to be consulted before travel. A temporary travel sticker called a Notvignette may be needed, as the OeAD student residence FAQ explains.

For paid work, a prospective employer applies to the Public Employment Service, or AMS, before the student starts. An employment permit for up to 20 hours per week can be issued without a labour-market test, which means AMS does not first test whether another available worker should fill the job, when study remains the main purpose. The official student work guidance controls that boundary. The Austria student and post-study work guide owns the full work route.

Key takeaways

  • For eligible study longer than six months, the Student Residence Permit comes before Visa D.
  • The New Delhi residence appointment and the later VFS visa stage are separate.
  • Proof of funds combines the age-based 12-month amount, rent excess, insurance and regular financial burdens.
  • A six-month account trail and source evidence matter as much as the closing balance.
  • Accommodation proof covers at least three months, and residence insurance differs from Visa D travel insurance.
  • After approval, watch the three-month Visa D application clock and the six-month card-collection clock.
  • Renew before expiry and do not treat the student residence card as a work permit.

Frequently asked questions

Is Visa D the Austria student visa for a degree?

Not by itself. For an eligible course longer than six months, the Student Residence Permit is the long-stay status. An Indian applicant normally seeks Visa D after a positive residence decision, then uses it to enter Austria and collect the card. Visa D cannot replace the residence permit for a multi-year degree.

Do I book VFS for the first residence application?

No, not under the current standard New Delhi residence route. For study over six months, request residence appointment instructions through the embassy’s named email channel. VFS belongs to visa handling, including the later Visa D step after a positive residence decision. Keep the embassy’s written instructions because the two appointments aren’t interchangeable.

How much money must an Indian student show in 2026?

The 12-month base is EUR 8,670.96 when the student is under 24 and EUR 15,700.68 from the 24th birthday. Add 12 months of rent above EUR 386.43, insurance provision and authority-adjusted regular burdens. These figures are current for 2026 and must be refreshed for a later filing.

Does Austria require a blocked account for students?

No specific account product is mandatory in the cited Austrian instructions. Instead, show money tied to the applicant, usable from Austria and supported by six months of statements plus credible origin evidence. Savings, family support, a loan or scholarship may be combined if each amount is documented and the total is reconciled once.

How much accommodation evidence is required?

Plan to prove an Austrian address for at least the first three months. A signed rental contract, student-housing confirmation or documented reservation can serve when it states the price. The authority uses that monthly amount in the funds formula, so a future intention to find housing after arrival does not meet the same requirement.

How long can the residence decision take?

OeAD gives a general decision period of 90 days after submission. If the Austrian authority asks for further documents, that period can extend by another 90 days. Start preparation well before the intake, and do not treat either period as a guaranteed personal timeline or buy non-refundable travel before the required approval.

Can I work with the Student Residence Permit?

The residence card is not itself an employment permit. The prospective employer must apply to AMS before the job starts. A permit for up to 20 hours weekly can be issued without a labour-market test where study remains the main purpose. This is a permit ceiling, not a guaranteed job or automatic right.

When should I renew the Austria student residence permit?

The renewal window opens three months before expiry and closes when the current card expires. File in person with the competent Austrian authority before that date. A timely application preserves lawful residence while pending, but travel after card expiry needs separate advice because the receipt alone may not secure re-entry.
