Austria’s 4-stage post-study work route for Indian graduates is a sequence, not one open work visa. During study, an employer normally needs an AMS employment permit. After eligible Austrian graduation, you can seek a one-time 12-month renewal of the Residence Permit Student. A qualification-matched job can then support an employer-tied Red-White-Red Card, followed later by the Red-White-Red Card Plus. The next action is to record the expiry date on your current Student permit, because that date controls the first renewal window.

Austria therefore uses several legal stages rather than one post-study work visa. Each stage changes who applies, how many hours you can work and whether the job must match your qualification. The sequence doesn’t begin after graduation. Graduation evidence, job search, the employment offer and the new card then follow the permit-expiry check. The study in Austria guide covers the wider country decision.

What is Austria’s post-study work route?

The route moves through four distinct statuses. It isn’t one application that changes name over time. Student work requires employer action. Graduation can support a 12-month student-residence renewal for job search. A qualifying offer can support the graduate Red-White-Red Card. Sufficient qualifying employment on that card can later support the Plus card and unrestricted labour-market access.

A labour-market test is AMS’s check for a suitable registered worker, while an employment permit is the employer’s permission for the named student job.

Stage Your status or application Work position Event that moves the route forward
During study Residence Permit Student Employer seeks an AMS employment permit, commonly for up to 20 hours per week without a labour-market test Successful completion of eligible Austrian studies
Graduate search year One-time 12-month renewal of Residence Permit Student Employer permit remains necessary. Up to 20 hours can cover an interim job that is not degree-matched A binding offer matching the level of the Austrian qualification and the local salary rule
Graduate work card Red-White-Red Card for graduates Work for the employer named in the application, normally for up to 24 months At least 21 months of qualifying employment during the preceding 24 months
Later access Red-White-Red Card Plus Unrestricted labour-market access Further residence choices depend on the holder’s later history and conditions

The 12-month stage isn’t the six-month Job Seeker Visa for Very Highly Qualified Workers. The Migration Austria FAQ separates the graduate renewal from that points-based visa. An Austrian graduate normally uses the renewal tied to completed Austrian study rather than entering the six-month points route.

The route also does not turn every offer into a graduate card. The job must correspond to the qualification level, and the gross pay must meet the locally customary amount for comparable Austrian graduates doing comparable work. The graduate category has no points test and no individual labour-market test, but the academic and salary tests remain.

The expiry date belongs at the start of the plan because it controls the renewal window. Graduation evidence belongs next because the 12-month stage depends on successful completion. The offer arrives later in the route and must satisfy a stronger condition than an interim search-year job. This order keeps lawful residence, temporary income and the long-term graduate role as three separate decisions.

Can an Indian student work while studying in Austria?

Yes, but a third-country student normally needs an employment permit before starting work. Here, third-country means a person from outside the EU or EEA, including an Indian student. The employer applies to the Public Employment Service, known as AMS. The student does not receive a general right to begin a job merely because the weekly hours stay below 20.

Companies have to apply for this employment permit.Migration Austria, temporary residence

Employment for up to 20 hours per week can be approved without a labour-market test when study remains the main purpose of residence. The labour-market test asks whether a suitable registered worker is available for the job. Above 20 hours, an employer may still apply, but AMS can apply that test. The AMS student-employment guidance is the current operational source.

Situation Who acts Work-permit position What the student should not assume
Job up to 20 hours per week The employer applies to AMS Approval can be given without a labour-market test Twenty hours is not a permit exemption
Job above 20 hours per week The employer applies to AMS A labour-market test can apply Semester holidays do not create an automatic unlimited-hours right
Marginal employment The employer still handles the permit route The permit can still be required A low monthly income does not remove immigration rules
Prescribed curricular internship The employer notifies AMS under the narrow official route An employment permit may not be required when the internship meets the statutory condition Any voluntary internship is not automatically covered

The Austrian government states that an employer must notify AMS at least three weeks before a prescribed curricular internship begins. Its student-employment guidance treats that as a narrow route. The curriculum and employer notification determine the exception, not the internship label alone.

Work during study can build experience and employer relationships, but it doesn’t reserve the later graduate card. The graduate offer is assessed afresh for qualification match and locally customary pay. A student job and the later Red-White-Red Card job can therefore be different roles.

Is the Austrian graduate extension an open work permit?

No. The graduate extension is a one-time renewal of the Residence Permit Student for 12 months after successful completion of eligible Austrian studies. It supports job search or setting up a business. It preserves the student-residence framework rather than creating unrestricted employment.

for a period of twelve monthsAustrian Settlement and Residence Act, section 64

Timing decides whether the renewal protects your stay. The current federal application form says a renewal may be submitted no earlier than three months before expiry and no later than the existing permit’s expiry date. A timely renewal lets the applicant remain lawfully while it is pending. A late filing is generally treated differently and can require departure.

no later than the day on which the residence permit expiresAustrian Interior Ministry, residence application form

The search year still uses the student employment-permit system. An employer can seek approval for up to 20 hours per week even when the interim job does not match the graduate’s qualification. This can support income during the search, but the stop-gap job does not qualify for the graduate Red-White-Red Card merely because it pays.

Question Graduate renewal Job Seeker Visa
Who uses it Eligible graduates of Austrian higher education Very Highly Qualified Workers using the separate points route
Duration 12 months Six months
Legal form One-time renewal of Residence Permit Student Separate job-seeker visa
Employment during search Employer permit can support up to 20 hours, including non-matched interim work Not the Austrian-graduate student-renewal route
Next graduate step Qualification-matched offer can support the graduate Red-White-Red Card Uses the conditions of its own immigration category

The graduate renewal continues the Student permit’s general conditions, including funds, insurance and current supporting evidence. The Austria student residence guide explains that wider framework.

Which job qualifies for the graduate Red-White-Red Card?

A binding job offer qualifies only when the work corresponds to the level of the Austrian qualification and the offered gross pay meets the comparable local graduate standard. The category covers eligible bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral and qualifying diploma graduates of Austrian public universities, universities of applied sciences and accredited private universities.

This route is for a person who completed eligible study in Austria. An Indian degree alone, followed by a job offer in Austria, does not create the Austrian-graduate category. The federal graduate route expressly states that graduates do not use a points system.

For graduates, there is no points system.Austrian government, Red-White-Red Card for graduates

Does the offer fit the graduate route?Green has official evidence. Amber needs a named answer. Red conflicts with the published route.
Offer evidence Planning status Reason and next action
The Austrian degree, job duties, collective-agreement classification and gross pay support the same qualification level Ready for the employer declaration The residence application can use a consistent offer and employer form
The job title sounds relevant, but duties or qualification level are vague Needs a detailed role description The employer should state the actual work and required graduate level
The salary is stated, but the collective agreement, group, grade or credited experience is missing Needs salary classification The employer should identify all four items in writing
The offer is for 20 to 29 weekly hours Needs authority confirmation Current official sources conflict on whether a 30-hour condition applies, so do not rely on the contract without written confirmation
The work does not correspond to the level of the completed Austrian qualification Does not fit the graduate category A different role or immigration category needs a fresh assessment

The qualification match is about the work, not the label alone. A role called analyst can involve graduate-level data, finance or research work, or it can involve routine duties unrelated to the Austrian degree. The employer’s description and declaration need to show the actual tasks consistently.

A useful role description connects daily duties with the knowledge expected from the Austrian degree. For a data-science graduate, that evidence might name modelling, data preparation, statistical analysis and technical reporting instead of only saying analyst. The residence authority and AMS still decide the legal match, but a specific description gives them the work evidence needed for that assessment.

A current official-source conflict affects part-time offers. The OeAD Red-White-Red Card page refers to an offer of at least 30 hours per week. The current statute and federal graduate page state qualification match and locally customary pay without that number. An applicant with a 20 to 29-hour offer needs written confirmation from the residence authority or AMS before relying on it.

Is there a fixed graduate salary for the RWR Card?

No. The current graduate rule has no fixed nationwide euro threshold. The offered gross pay must be at least the locally customary salary for an Austrian graduate doing comparable work with comparable experience. A salary figure belonging to another Red-White-Red Card category cannot be copied into the graduate route.

The statutory rule appears in Aliens Employment Act section 12b. In practice, collective agreements commonly supply the minimum salary framework. The applicable agreement usually follows the employer’s industry, so two similar job titles in different companies can sit under different pay scales.

The Austrian Chamber of Labour pay guidance tells workers to identify the collective agreement and classification. The contract needs enough detail to test the correct agreement, employment group, grade and credited years of experience.

Check Evidence needed Question it answers
Degree level Austrian completion evidence Which graduate qualification supports the route
Job duties Detailed offer or contract description Whether the work corresponds to that qualification level
Collective agreement Employer’s industry agreement Which salary framework governs the job
Classification Employment group, grade and credited experience Which line of the agreement sets the minimum
Gross pay Contract and payment schedule Whether the offer meets the current comparable local amount

Many Austrian salary packages contain 14 payments per year under their collective agreement. The official remuneration guidance explains this common payment pattern. It does not apply identically to every contract, and it does not create a graduate visa threshold. The payment schedule and annual gross package should be read as written rather than multiplying one monthly amount blindly.

The employer declaration must agree with the contract. A correct salary beside a vague or unrelated role can still leave the qualification test unresolved. A clear job description beside an unclassified salary leaves the pay test unresolved. Both sides of the offer have to support the same graduate route.

Where and when do you apply for the graduate RWR Card?

The application goes to the competent residence authority, not directly to AMS. The applicant or, where allowed, the prospective employer files through the residence channel. That authority checks residence requirements and forwards the employment assessment to AMS.

Applications cannot be submitted directly to the AMS.AMS, Red-White-Red Card employer process

  1. Secure the qualifying offer. The contract or binding offer needs duties, pay and a start date that support the Austrian qualification.
  2. Obtain the employer declaration. The employer records the work, salary and classification consistently with the offer.
  3. Build the residence file. Add identity, Austrian completion, insurance and any authority-specific records.
  4. File through the residence authority. The authority sends the employment part to AMS, so no separate direct RWR application goes to AMS.
  5. Protect the current status. Federal guidance recommends filing at least eight weeks before the intended employment start and no later than the Student permit’s expiry.
  6. Wait for work authorisation. A first employer-tied work title normally permits the graduate job only after the card has been collected.

The eight-week period is planning guidance, not a guaranteed outcome for every file. A complete application is important because missing evidence delays the residence or AMS assessment. The graduate should align the contract start date with realistic filing and card-collection timing.

A timely renewal protects lawful residence while the case is pending, but it does not automatically authorise the new graduate job. The federal form says first-time employment under the employer-tied title begins after collection of the residence permit. Residence continuity and work authorisation are two separate legal effects.

The graduate transition begins well before the final student card expires. Students still choosing a course can compare employability alongside academic fit in the Austria master’s guide, rather than treating the later immigration route as automatic. A final-semester calendar can hold the completion date, permit expiry, earliest renewal day, target filing date and realistic card-collection period on one line.

Which documents and money figures belong to each stage?

The graduate extension and the Red-White-Red Card use different evidence logic. The extension remains a Student permit renewal and can require means evidence. The graduate RWR application adds a qualification-matched offer and employer declaration, while current federal guidance exempts it from a separate sufficient-means test.

Evidence 12-month Student renewal Graduate RWR Card Practical note
Passport and recent biometric photo Required Required Passport validity can limit the card period
Austrian completion evidence Required Required Use the authority-accepted completion confirmation or degree
Health insurance covering all risks Required Required Keep cover continuous until employment insurance begins
Means and regular-expense evidence Relevant under continuing Student permit conditions Current federal guidance says separate proof is not required Residence means are not the graduate salary test
Employment offer and employer declaration Not needed merely for the search renewal Required in substance Role, pay and classification must agree
Police clearance and civil-status records Authority and case dependent May be requested, especially for an initial application Freshness, previous residence and family circumstances matter
Translations, certification, originals and copies As requested As requested The authority can require original, translated or certified versions

The current Interior Ministry RWR explanation says the applicant does not complete the personal-funds fields for that card. The employment review still checks whether the offer meets the locally customary salary rule.

Current official guidance differs on accommodation evidence. The Interior Ministry document guidance and federal graduate page say proof of a legal claim to accommodation is not required for the RWR Card, while an OeAD checklist still lists accommodation. The competent residence authority’s filing checklist should decide the submitted set, and address or housing-cost evidence should remain available if requested.

2026 figure What it applies to What it does not mean
EUR 218 Current application fee shown for the Student renewal and RWR application Not a later-year guarantee and not the salary test
EUR 722.58 monthly Student means reference for an applicant under age 24 Not the graduate RWR minimum salary
EUR 1,308.39 monthly Student means reference from age 24 and the general single-person residence reference Not the locally customary graduate pay figure
EUR 386.43 monthly Allowance before excess regular housing and instalment costs increase the Student means calculation Not a rent cap
No fixed euro amount Current graduate RWR salary rule Not permission for any salary to qualify

The 2026 fee is published on the Vienna RWR application page. The Student means figures come from the OeAD Student permit guidance, while the Interior Ministry general requirements publishes current residence reference rates. These figures apply to 2026 and need a fresh official check before a later-year application.

The search-year authority decides the exact funds period and acceptable evidence for the renewal. Housing and instalment costs above the stated allowance can increase the amount to show. The Austria first-year cost worksheet covers living expenses, but it should not be used as a substitute for the residence authority’s funds calculation.

Can you change employers on the RWR Card?

Not freely on the ordinary employer-tied Red-White-Red Card. The initial graduate card normally authorises work for the employer named in the application and can be valid for up to 24 months. A standard employer change requires a new Red-White-Red Card for the new employer.

The Migration Austria permanent-immigration overview explains the employer tie and normal 24-month period. The card should not be treated as an open work permit merely because the holder already graduated in Austria.

After at least 21 months of qualifying employment in the preceding 24 months, the holder can apply for the Red-White-Red Card Plus. The Plus card, not the initial graduate card, provides unrestricted labour-market access. The official Plus guidance also shows why a student should preserve payslips, employment records and permit history.

The 21-in-24 test makes continuity records important. The application needs to establish qualifying employment across the relevant window, not simply the date printed on the initial card. Payslips, social-insurance records, contracts and any approved employer change help reconstruct that history if the months are not continuous.

Card or period Employer access Change consequence Next threshold
Student permit during study Employment requires the applicable employer AMS permit A new job needs its own compliant employment-permit handling Eligible Austrian graduation
Student permit graduate extension Up to 20 hours can be permitted, including non-matched interim work The interim job does not by itself qualify for graduate RWR Qualification-matched offer and salary fit
Graduate Red-White-Red Card Named employer Normal employer change requires a new Red-White-Red Card At least 21 qualifying months in the preceding 24 months
Red-White-Red Card Plus Unrestricted labour-market access Employment is no longer tied to the original named employer Later residence stages depend on separate conditions

Plus-card validity is not always three years. Official guidance states one year generally, or three years after two years of lawful settlement and completion of Module 1, subject to passport validity. Module 1 is an Integration Agreement condition that must be proved with an accepted document, so check the official evidence list before relying on a three-year Plus card.

Family members follow their own application conditions. A spouse, registered partner or minor unmarried child of a Red-White-Red Card holder may qualify for the Plus card under the family-reunification rules, which can provide unrestricted work access. Means, insurance, accommodation and possible language conditions still require a separate family file.

Before giving notice, confirm with the residence authority whether the new employer must support a fresh card, and do not begin the new role until the required work authorisation is in place.

Key takeaways

  • The Austrian graduate route is a sequence from Student permit to a 12-month renewal, employer-tied RWR Card and later RWR Plus.
  • An employer normally applies to AMS before a third-country student starts work, even below 20 hours.
  • The 12-month graduate renewal preserves student residence and does not create unrestricted employment.
  • A qualifying graduate offer needs both degree-level work and locally customary comparable gross pay.
  • The graduate category has no points system and no fixed nationwide euro salary threshold.
  • The RWR application goes through the residence authority, which forwards employment review to AMS.
  • Unrestricted labour-market access normally begins with RWR Plus after the 21-in-24-month employment test.

Common questions

Can international students work 20 hours in Austria without a permit?

No. For a third-country student, the employer normally applies to AMS for an employment permit. Up to 20 hours per week can be approved without a labour-market test when study remains the main residence purpose. The 20-hour figure simplifies the assessment, but it does not remove the permit requirement.

Is Austria’s 12-month graduate extension automatic?

No. It is a one-time renewal application after successful completion of eligible Austrian studies. The applicant must file within the permitted renewal window and continue meeting the applicable Student residence conditions. A timely application can protect lawful residence while pending, but it does not create automatic permission to begin a graduate job.

Is the graduate extension Austria’s six-month Job Seeker Visa?

No. Austrian graduates use a one-time 12-month renewal of the Residence Permit Student for job search or business preparation. The six-month Job Seeker Visa belongs to the separate Very Highly Qualified Workers points route. Confusing them changes the duration, application basis and work position during the search.

What salary is required for Austria’s graduate RWR Card?

There is no fixed nationwide euro threshold in the current graduate rule. The offer must pay at least the locally customary gross salary for a comparable Austrian graduate doing comparable work with comparable experience. The employer’s collective agreement, employment group, grade and credited experience help identify the relevant minimum.

Can I start my graduate job after filing the RWR application?

Not merely because the application was filed. The current federal form says first-time employment under an employer-tied residence title begins after the permit is collected. A timely filing can preserve lawful residence, but work authorisation is a separate effect. The contract start date should allow for filing, assessment and card collection.

Can I change employers on a graduate Red-White-Red Card?

Not freely. The ordinary graduate Red-White-Red Card is tied to the employer named in the application. A normal change requires a new Red-White-Red Card for the new employer. The new role must again support the relevant qualification and pay conditions, so resignation timing needs to account for the fresh process.

When can an Austrian graduate apply for RWR Plus?

A Red-White-Red Card holder can seek the Plus card after at least 21 months of qualifying employment during the preceding 24 months. The Plus card gives unrestricted labour-market access. Its validity is not universally three years, because residence history, Module 1 completion and passport validity can affect the issued period.
