An Austria scholarship for Indian students rarely funds all 24 months of a master’s, and the former Erhard Busek full-degree award now says no further call is planned. Named scholarship and fellowship durations on this page range from 1 to 36 months, but they fund different purposes. Austria’s OeAD education agency says whole-degree scholarships are scarce. A general Indian bachelor’s applicant should keep a self-funded Austria budget. An Austrian master’s applicant has a few specific alternatives, while PhD funding in Austria is often a salary or doctoral fellowship rather than an admission scholarship.
The first Austria funding step is to classify the award before comparing the amount. One named mobility example is Ernst Mach UAS, where UAS means university of applied sciences. Its EUR 1,300 monthly India-report figure doesn’t pay for a regular two-year Austrian master’s because the grant funds only 4 to 10 months as an exchange or visiting student. Your current level, nationality, academic field and intended stay must match one live Austrian primary-source call. The overall Austria study plan and first-year cost worksheet should remain viable even if the scholarship result is no.
Are full-degree scholarships common in Austria?
No. The official Study in Austria funding guidance says there are only a few awards for an entire degree and directs applicants to grants.at, institutions and other funding organisations. OeAD doesn’t present a routine award that funds every international bachelor’s, master’s or PhD applicant.
There are hardly any scholarships for a whole degree programme here in Austria.Study in Austria, scholarships and funding
The statement doesn’t mean no Indian applicant can receive funding. It means every route needs a narrower label. Erasmus Mundus can fund a joint master’s that includes Austria. TU Wien’s Helmut Veith Stipend can support a woman admitted to an eligible computer science master’s. ISTA funds admitted PhD students as employees. Students at Risk can support degree completion when a person faces a specified denial of education and an Austrian institution nominates them.
A scholarship list can therefore look long while offering little to a new degree applicant. Ernst Mach pages describe real monthly funding, and enrolled-student merit grants are real too. Their existence doesn’t make them open, full-degree or available to the reader’s case.
What kind of Austrian funding are you looking at?
Classify the award by what it pays for, not by the word scholarship. Five types commonly appear in Austrian search results, and only the first can replace a complete degree-funding plan.
| Funding type | What it pays for | What it does not prove | Planning treatment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole-degree award | Tuition or living support across a complete named degree | That the call is open or the applicant can apply directly | Use only after current eligibility, duration and nomination rules are verified |
| Mobility grant | A semester or limited study visit while the student remains linked to another institution | Admission funding for a regular Austrian degree | Keep the home degree and host acceptance conditions visible |
| Research grant | A time-limited research stay with an Austrian academic host | Regular master’s or PhD enrolment funding | Check research status, supervisor and stay duration |
| Merit or project grant | Recognition for completed study or specific thesis and research costs | Pre-arrival tuition and living money | Treat it as later or restricted support |
| Funded employment | Salary and social security through a PhD or research job | That admission alone creates employment | Check the academic application and employment route separately |
The distinction changes the application. A whole-degree scholarship may sit inside an admissions or consortium process. A mobility award can require current enrolment and host acceptance. A research grant can require an Austrian supervisor. A funded PhD position has employment conditions. The label determines which evidence comes first.
Which Austria funding routes can an Indian applicant use?
The matrix gives the page’s current decision on 15 August 2026. “Potentially open” means the nationality route exists, not that every applicant qualifies. “Closed” means the last verified deadline passed or the official page says no further call is planned. Every amount and date needs a live recheck before submission.
A free mover is a temporary visiting student accepted outside a formal exchange agreement, not a student admitted to a complete Austrian degree. An Erasmus Mundus consortium is the group of partner universities that jointly runs one master’s. For an Austria plan, at least one partner or compulsory study period must be in Austria.
Legal equality is not a general benefit of Indian citizenship. The official institutional call decides it from the applicant’s legal status and evidence. WU’s current merit page gives long-term residence and being the spouse or child of an Austrian national as examples of third-country applicants treated like Austrians. A newly arrived Indian student without such a status should treat that merit route as unavailable.
| Route and reader | Can an Indian applicant use it? | Funding purpose and amount | Current status | Decision before applying |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Erhard Busek, incoming master’s | India was eligible, but institutions nominated admitted students | EUR 1,300 monthly, travel up to EUR 1,200, tuition waiver and 24 months | Closed. No further call is planned | Do not include it in a 2027 plan unless OeAD publishes a new call |
| Ernst Mach UAS, enrolled bachelor’s or master’s student | Potentially, after Austrian UAS exchange or free-mover acceptance | Visiting study for 4 to 10 months, EUR 1,300 monthly in the India report | 2026/27 deadline passed on 1 February 2026 | Do not treat it as regular Austrian degree funding |
| Ernst Mach worldwide, PhD or research profile | Potentially, with the detailed status and supervisor conditions | Research stay for 1 to 9 months, EUR 1,300 monthly in the India report | 2026/27 deadline passed on 1 February 2026 | Secure an Austrian academic supervisor and wait for the next verified call |
| Richard Plaschka, Austrian-history researcher | Potentially, for the narrow historical-sciences profile | EUR 2,500 monthly in the India report, normally 4 to 12 months | Final deadline 15 September 2026 before discontinuation | Use only when the research directly concerns Austrian history |
| Students at Risk, threatened student | Potentially, when the risk test is met and an Austrian institution nominates | EUR 1,200 monthly for degree completion, tuition excluded | Page gives nomination deadline 1 September 2026 but carries 2025/26 labelling | Recheck status. This is protection funding, not a merit route |
| Erasmus Mundus Joint Master, master’s applicant | Yes, students worldwide may apply to an eligible consortium | Up to EUR 1,400 monthly for 12, 18 or 24 months with mandatory participation costs covered | Programme-specific, usually October to January | Confirm that the exact joint master’s includes an Austrian study period |
| Helmut Veith Stipend, woman entering eligible TU Wien CS master’s | Yes, no nationality exclusion is stated on the official page | EUR 7,000 per year plus TU Wien tuition waiver | Recurring deadline 30 November | Funding is awarded only after unconditional admission |
| Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) PhD, admitted doctoral candidate | Yes, subject to academic admission | Employment with 2026 gross salary of EUR 3,053 to EUR 3,673 monthly, paid 14 times, no tuition | Admissions cycle must be checked separately | Treat it as a funded PhD job, not an OeAD scholarship |
| Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW) DOC, early Austrian-university PhD candidate | Potentially, if the doctoral and timing criteria are met | 24, 30 or 36 months. 2026 personnel-cost rate EUR 52,080 yearly | Next window 17 August to 15 September 2026 | Do not read the personnel-cost rate as take-home pay |
| WU merit and TU Wien faculty grants, enrolled students | Unavailable to an ordinary new Indian applicant unless the exact call accepts the applicant’s legal status | Small merit or project support after study has begun | Institution and faculty calls vary | Check the official status evidence, but do not use these as an admission or living-cost plan |
India eligibility, funding purpose and timing checked on 15 August 2026
The matrix has only two broadly relevant degree-level leads for a new master’s applicant. Erasmus Mundus is open worldwide but is a multi-country degree, and Austria must be part of the exact consortium. Helmut Veith is an Austria-based route but has a narrow gender, field and admission profile. Busek would have been a strong India route, but its current official status removes it from a responsible funding plan.
The status column matters as much as the amount. Richard Plaschka still has a final 2026 deadline but applies only to Austrian-history research. Students at Risk can support degree completion but depends on demonstrated denial of education and institutional nomination. Neither becomes a general high-marks scholarship merely because an Indian applicant is not excluded by nationality.
The matrix also separates cash labels that cannot be compared directly. The Erasmus Mundus figure is a monthly scholarship contribution. ISTA publishes gross employment pay across 14 payments. OeAW publishes annual personnel cost. Before estimating usable money, the applicant must preserve the tax, social-security, tuition and payment-period conditions attached to the original label.
Can an Indian bachelor’s applicant get a full Austria scholarship?
A general Indian bachelor’s applicant should not assume a national full-degree award is available. The OeAD scholarship overview points bachelor’s readers towards mobility and exceptional routes rather than a routine merit scholarship covering a complete Austrian degree.
Ernst Mach UAS does not solve the first-year bachelor’s funding problem. A bachelor’s student must already be enrolled outside Austria, must have completed at least four semesters and must first be accepted by an Austrian UAS as an exchange student or free mover. The grant then supports a visit, not a new full Austrian bachelor’s.
Students at Risk is a genuine degree-completion route, but the official risk-fund page requires a specified denial of education connected with identity or civic or political engagement. An Austrian institution nominates the student, and tuition is not covered.
It is not possible to apply directly as an individual.OeAD, Students at Risk Fonds
The practical bachelor’s plan is therefore self-funding first, followed by exact institution awards, external foundations and mobility funding after enrolment. A tuition discount or later merit prize should reduce the plan only after a written award confirms the amount and period. The Austria bachelor’s eligibility guide should be used before funding applications that depend on admission.
Which master’s scholarships are realistic for an Indian applicant?
Three master’s names deserve careful attention, but they solve different problems. Busek is closed. Erasmus Mundus can fund a joint multi-country degree. Helmut Veith supports a narrow TU Wien computer science profile. The word master’s does not make them interchangeable.
| Route | Who can pursue it | What is funded | First decisive check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Erhard Busek Grant | No current applicant while no further call is planned | The former call covered a 24-month master’s after admission and institution nomination | Whether OeAD has published a genuinely new call |
| Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters | Students worldwide applying to the selected consortium | EUR 1,400 monthly for the full 12, 18 or 24-month programme under the 2026 guide | Whether the exact programme includes Austria and has a live student deadline |
| Helmut Veith Stipend | Women applying to an eligible English TU Wien computer science master’s | EUR 7,000 yearly and TU Wien tuition waiver | Eligible programme, academic profile and unconditional admission |
At present, no further call for applications for the Erhard Busek Grant is planned.OeAD, Erhard Busek Grant
Erasmus Mundus is the broadest nationality route in this group. The European Commission says students worldwide are welcome and directs them to the partner-university consortium running each programme. The 2026 programme guide sets the scholarship at EUR 1,400 monthly and prevents mandatory participation charges for scholarship holders. It also supports travel, visa, installation and living needs.
An Erasmus Mundus award is not automatically an Austria scholarship. The joint master’s must include study in at least two countries, and only the chosen consortium can show whether an Austrian institution or study period is included. The Commission says newly selected programmes for September 2027 starts should open in autumn 2026, but each live catalogue record controls its deadline.
Helmut Veith is Austria-based and smaller. Funding can be requested before or alongside admission, but the award follows only after unconditional TU Wien admission. The academic profile, eligible English computer science master’s and annual 30 November deadline should be checked together. An applicant outside that profile should not treat the stipend as general TU Wien merit aid.
Does Ernst Mach fund a complete Austrian degree?
No. The two Ernst Mach routes most relevant to India fund mobility or research, not a regular Austrian bachelor’s, master’s or PhD. Their 2026/27 deadline passed on 1 February 2026, and the dossier found no published 2027/28 call by 15 August 2026.
Free-mover status still needs written Austrian UAS acceptance. It does not turn the visit into admission for a complete Austrian degree.
| Route | Your starting status | Austrian host requirement | Purpose and duration | Current decision |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ernst Mach UAS | Enrolled outside Austria in a bachelor’s or master’s. Bachelor’s applicants need four completed semesters | Accepted as an exchange student or free mover by an Austrian UAS | Visiting study for 4 to 10 months | Past 2026/27 deadline. Wait for a verified next call |
| Ernst Mach worldwide | Eligible PhD, recent postgraduate, postdoc or external lecturer or researcher profile | Written confirmation from an Austrian academic supervisor | Research stay for 1 to 9 months | Past 2026/27 deadline. Wait for a verified next call |
The grant is aimed at exchange or visiting scholars.OeAD, Ernst Mach UAS FAQ
The UAS route begins with a home degree and Austrian host acceptance. The worldwide route begins with research status and an Austrian supervisor. Neither begins with admission to a full Austrian degree. The amount reported for India was EUR 1,300 monthly, but the next call must confirm the current rate, deadline and country wording.
The Ernst Mach Follow-Up route is narrower again. It is for postdocs or lecturers in non-European developing countries who previously held an OeAD-administered grant, with at least three years since the last funded visit. A first-time Indian applicant should remove it immediately.
How can an Indian applicant fund a PhD in Austria?
Look for funded doctoral employment and doctoral fellowships as well as scholarships. ISTA and OeAW DOC show the difference. ISTA pays admitted PhD students as employees. OeAW DOC funds dissertation work at an Austrian university for a candidate who meets its timing and research-profile conditions.
| Route | Funding form | Published 2026 amount | Timing and limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| ISTA PhD | Employment with salary and social security, no tuition or PhD application fee | EUR 3,053 to EUR 3,673 gross monthly, paid 14 times | The academic admission cycle is separate and must be current |
| OeAW DOC | Dissertation fellowship for 24, 30 or 36 months | EUR 52,080 annual personnel cost | 2026 window is 17 August to 15 September. The rate includes taxes and employment costs, so it is not take-home pay |
Two doctoral funding routes checked on 15 August 2026
PhD students are employed by ISTA.ISTA Graduate School, funding and awards
ISTA’s salary range cannot be compared with a scholarship’s monthly payment without accounting for gross pay, social security and 14 annual payments. OeAW’s EUR 52,080 figure is a personnel-cost rate, not cash deposited into the fellow’s account. Each label protects the student from overstating usable income.
The 2026 OeAW DOC application window lasts 30 days, from 17 August to 15 September. A candidate needs the doctoral project, Austrian-university setting and research-profile evidence ready for that window. The published dates do not extend the academic eligibility period or turn a late master’s applicant into a DOC candidate.
OeAW DOC is not an incoming master’s award. Under the 2026 criteria, a candidate applies before starting the Austrian PhD or within the first year, normally within two years of completing the master’s, and must also meet the stated research-profile conditions. A student still choosing a master’s should treat it as a later doctoral possibility.
A general Austrian doctoral admission letter does not promise either route. The Austria master’s and PhD route comparison separates postgraduate academic evidence, while the funding application must follow the named employer or fellowship rules.
How should an Indian student search grants.at?
Use grants.at as a discovery database, not as one scholarship application. The official grants.at explanation says the database has more than 1,200 entries and covers incoming, outgoing and domestic funding. The awarding authority named in each record receives the application.
| Step | Filter or check | What you enter | Mistake prevented |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Country of origin | India, then read whether origin means nationality, residence or place of study | Assuming every India search result uses citizenship |
| 2 | Target country | Austria | Keeping outgoing or third-country awards |
| 3 | Target group | Your current level, such as undergraduate, graduate, PhD or researcher | Using a postdoc or enrolled-student call as admission funding |
| 4 | Type of grant | Whole degree, semester mobility, research, allowance or prize | Calling every result a full scholarship |
| 5 | Current primary call | Open status, exact deadline, amount, duration and awarding authority | Applying from an old database record or recurring date |
The grants.at search tips confirm that the award page, not the database result, controls the final target group and application route. Save the exact eligibility wording before keeping the lead.
Save five pieces of evidence for every possible award. Keep the current call URL, eligibility sentence, purpose, amount and duration, and application route. A scheme moves to the funding plan only when all five belong to the same live call. A generic programme page with an old deadline stays in the recheck column.
Which popular Austria scholarship names should an Indian applicant exclude?
Remove a scheme when the country, level, purpose or current call does not fit. Keeping an impressive name in the plan makes the final funding gap look smaller than it is.
CEEPUS should be removed for a general Indian-origin applicant because India is not among the published origin countries. Ernst Mach ASEA-UNINET should also be removed because the named Asian origin countries do not include India. A programme name containing Asia does not establish Indian eligibility.
The Richard Plaschka Grant is different from a stale listing. The programme page and OeAD current closing dates identify 15 September 2026 as the final deadline before discontinuation. It remains usable only for a researcher in historical sciences whose work focuses on Austrian history.
Franz Werfel shows the opposite timing problem. Its programme page lists 1 March and 15 September for eligible Austrian-literature researchers, while the current-calls page says no call is open. The live call status must control the decision.
Institutional merit grants create another planning risk. WU’s international-student funding page says students generally need their own means and limits its merit award to Austrian and EU citizens or qualifying third-country applicants, including examples such as long-term residents and spouses or children of Austrian nationals. A new Indian applicant without an accepted status should not place that award in a pre-arrival budget.
TU Wien faculty awards are similarly different from incoming admission money. Published faculty examples reward study already completed or support specific thesis and dissertation costs. A TU Wien physics funding-grant page uses Austrian-citizenship or equal-status conditions. A possible later grant cannot safely reduce the family’s initial tuition or residence-funds plan.
How should you build a scholarship-backed Austria plan?
Build two budgets, one without funding and one with only a written award. The self-funded version answers whether the degree remains possible if the application fails. The award version should use the confirmed amount, payment period and uncovered costs rather than a headline such as fully funded.
- Confirm admission eligibility for one exact programme before applying for awards tied to that admission.
- Classify each funding lead as whole degree, mobility, research, enrolled-student support or employment.
- Check India eligibility, current academic status, field, host requirement and application route on the live primary page.
- Record whether the amount is monthly, annual, per semester, total tuition, gross salary or personnel cost.
- Record the current deadline and mark a passed, unpublished or conflicting call as unavailable.
- Subtract only confirmed scholarship payments from the complete Austria cost plan.
- Keep admission, the student residence funds evidence and scholarship payment timing as separate checks.
The funding result should end in one of three decisions. Apply when the live call fits and the required host or admission step is achievable. Recheck when the next call is not published or the current page conflicts with a programme page. Exclude when nationality, level, purpose or current status fails.
- Austria has few whole-degree scholarships, so self-funding remains the base plan for most Indian degree applicants.
- The Erhard Busek Grant formerly funded Indian master’s applicants but currently says no further call is planned.
- Ernst Mach UAS funds visiting study, while Ernst Mach worldwide funds a research stay. Neither funds a regular Austrian degree.
- Erasmus Mundus can fully support a joint master’s, but the exact consortium must include an Austrian study period.
- Helmut Veith is a narrow TU Wien computer science route, not a general master’s scholarship.
- PhD funding may be employment or a doctoral fellowship, and published gross or personnel-cost figures are not take-home pay.
Frequently asked questions
Are there fully funded scholarships in Austria for Indian students?
A few narrow routes can fund a complete programme, but Austria does not offer a routine whole-degree scholarship for every Indian applicant. Erasmus Mundus may fund a joint master’s that includes Austria. Students at Risk is protection funding. ISTA PhD funding is employment. Every route has separate academic, status and timing conditions.
Is the Erhard Busek Grant open for Indian students?
No current application should rely on it. India was eligible in the former call, which supported a 24-month Austrian master’s through institution nomination. The live OeAD page now says no further call is planned. Treat Busek as closed unless OeAD publishes a new call with current eligibility and dates.
Can Ernst Mach fund my complete Austrian master’s?
No. Ernst Mach UAS supports exchange or visiting study for a student already enrolled outside Austria and accepted by an Austrian UAS. Ernst Mach worldwide supports a short research stay for eligible academic profiles. The 2026/27 deadlines passed, and neither route funds a regular complete Austrian master’s.
Can an Indian student get a bachelor’s scholarship in Austria?
A general Indian bachelor’s applicant should plan for self-funding because no routine national full-degree merit award was verified. Ernst Mach UAS becomes relevant only after enrolment outside Austria and four completed semesters. Students at Risk is a narrow protection route requiring demonstrated risk and nomination by an Austrian institution.
Which Austria master’s scholarships are realistic for Indians?
Erasmus Mundus is the broadest nationality-open lead, but the chosen joint master’s must include Austria. Helmut Veith can support a woman entering an eligible TU Wien computer science master’s. Busek is currently closed. Other institutional awards may depend on enrolment, legal status or a very narrow academic field.
How are PhD students funded in Austria?
Funding may come through employment, a fellowship or a separate research project. ISTA employs admitted PhD students and publishes a gross salary range. OeAW DOC funds qualifying dissertation work at an Austrian university. A general doctoral admission letter does not automatically create either funding route or a paid position.
Do I apply for an OeAD scholarship through grants.at?
Not necessarily. grants.at is a discovery database with more than 1,200 entries, not one awarding body or application portal. Filter India, Austria, target group and grant type, then open the current primary call. Apply through the university, OeAD, consortium, employer or other authority named in that record.
