Denmark has 8 universities offering research-based degrees, but an Indian student should shortlist exact English-taught programmes rather than rank the eight names. Current 2026 annual tuition examples in the matrix start at DKK 55,600, about INR 8.2 lakh, for a listed Aalborg bachelor’s route on AAU’s bachelor tuition page and reach EUR 17,300, about INR 19 lakh, in several fields on the Aarhus master’s tuition page.
Universities in Denmark for international students differ sharply by study level, subject, teaching language, city and application route. A useful first pass fixes the level and subject, removes programmes that aren’t fully taught in English or open to external applicants, then compares the exact tuition and city budget.
Which institutions are universities in Denmark?
The official university list contains the University of Copenhagen, Aarhus University, the University of Southern Denmark, Roskilde University, Aalborg University, the Technical University of Denmark, Copenhagen Business School and the IT University of Copenhagen. All eight deliver research-based bachelor’s, master’s and PhD education.
That list does not contain every recognised higher education provider. The Danish Agency’s recognition database also covers university colleges, business academies and artistic institutions. These are different routes, not weaker versions of a university. A professional bachelor’s degree aimed at practice and a research bachelor’s degree answer different academic goals.
| Institution group | Examples | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Broad university | Copenhagen, Aarhus, SDU | Several subject families sit inside one institution |
| Technical university | DTU | The institution concentrates on engineering, science and technology |
| Specialist university | CBS, ITU | The choice is concentrated in business or information technology |
| Interdisciplinary university | Roskilde, Aalborg | Project and problem-led study can shape the programme experience |
The category tells you what kind of study to search for. It does not settle whether a complete programme is taught in English, accepts external applicants or fits your qualification.
Which Denmark university fits your subject and budget?
The right university fit begins with an exact programme that passes the study-level, subject and English checks. The matrix then shows where current cost evidence and the application route strengthen or weaken that fit.
The city figures are not one sortable cost ranking. Some universities publish a full monthly basket, others publish rent or student examples, and three Copenhagen rows have no comparable institution-wide amount. Every cell names its basis. Tuition cells also state whether the figure is yearly, per semester or for a complete two-year master’s. That full master’s workload is 120 ECTS, normally 60 European credits for each full-time study year.
| University | Subject and complete English degrees | City evidence and monthly basis | 2026 tuition and period | Application route and current rule |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Copenhagen | Broad life science, health, science, social science and humanities fit. English master’s study only. | Copenhagen. No comparable institution-wide amount used. | Programme-specific total for the complete two-year, 120 ECTS master’s. | Optagelse.dk for bachelor’s, UCPH portal for master’s. |
| Aarhus University | Broad science, engineering, business, social science and arts fit. More than 50 English master’s choices, plus selected bachelor’s degrees. | EUR 770 to EUR 1,093 for a full month in student examples. | EUR 13,000 or EUR 17,300 yearly in most 2026/27 English master’s examples. | Optagelse.dk for bachelor’s, AU portal for master’s. |
| University of Southern Denmark | Engineering, AI, computing, business and health. English choices at both levels. | Rent examples of DKK 3,800 in Odense and DKK 2,500 in Sonderborg. | EUR 10,800 to EUR 17,300 yearly by faculty. | Optagelse.dk for bachelor’s, SDU portal for master’s. |
| Roskilde University | Computer science, environment, media and urban planning. Some master’s titles are closed to general admission. | No comparable official full monthly budget found. | EUR 10,000 to EUR 16,000 yearly in open 2026 examples. | Optagelse.dk for bachelor’s, RUC portal for master’s programmes open to external applicants. |
| Aalborg University | Engineering, energy, architecture, biotechnology and business. English bachelor’s choices and English master’s study. | DKK 3,200 to DKK 4,700 monthly rent. | DKK 55,600 or DKK 115,700 yearly for listed bachelor’s routes. Many master’s degrees cost DKK 57,850 per semester. | Optagelse.dk for bachelor’s, AAU portal for master’s. |
| Technical University of Denmark | Engineering, computing, energy and applied science. One English bachelor’s and extensive English MSc study. | EUR 1,244 to EUR 1,840 for a full month on campus. | EUR 7,500 per semester, explicitly due for revision. | Optagelse.dk for bachelor’s, DTU portal for master’s. |
| Copenhagen Business School | Business, economics, finance and management. English bachelor’s and English master’s choices. | Copenhagen. No comparable institution-wide amount used. | EUR 8,000 per master’s semester. EUR 6,500 per bachelor’s semester. | Optagelse.dk for bachelor’s. A master’s applicant who needs a permit uses Group 2 and its 15 January deadline. |
| IT University of Copenhagen | Data science, software and digital fields. Data Science is the international bachelor’s route. | Copenhagen. No comparable institution-wide amount used. | EUR 8,250 per semester in 2026. | Optagelse.dk for bachelor’s, ITU portal for master’s. |
Each row is a search lead, not an admission verdict. The exact programme must confirm its 2027 intake, teaching language, prerequisites, campus and total fee. The Denmark admission requirements guide handles the separate Indian qualification and subject-level test.
This order prevents a low headline fee from rescuing a programme that cannot admit the student. It also keeps city evidence in proportion. A rent example can reveal likely housing pressure, but it cannot replace a complete monthly budget that includes food, transport, insurance and initial deposits.
RUC’s published phrase, “legal right of admission”, means a continuation place reserved for a student from a qualifying RUC bachelor’s degree. It isn’t a general route for a new external applicant. DTU’s fee needs a different caution because the university says its EUR 7,500 semester amount is expected to change. In both cases, the linked programme page decides whether the row survives your shortlist.
Tuition fees are likely to be revised for the Autumn 2026 intake. Updates will follow on this site.Technical University of Denmark
Where are Denmark’s English-taught university degrees?
English choice is widest at master’s level. Aarhus publishes more than 50 English master’s programmes, while SDU says it offers around 50. The exact catalogue still controls whether a named degree is available for the intended intake.
The bachelor’s picture is smaller but not empty. DTU currently has one English full degree, General Engineering, and ITU’s international list names BSc Data Science. The table below routes other subject searches without claiming that every listed programme fits every qualification.
UCPH is the clear exception for undergraduate study. Its non-EU admission page says all bachelor’s programmes are taught in Danish. An English master’s catalogue at the same university does not change that undergraduate language rule.
| Goal | Strong first searches | Main caution |
|---|---|---|
| Engineering bachelor’s | DTU, SDU, Aalborg | The English degree and Indian subject equivalence both need evidence |
| Computing bachelor’s | Aarhus, SDU, ITU | ITU’s international bachelor’s route is Data Science |
| Business bachelor’s | CBS, Aarhus, SDU, Aalborg | Programme-specific language and subject evidence may apply |
| Engineering master’s | DTU, Aalborg, Aarhus, SDU | Prior subject credits can be more important than the degree title |
| Broad academic master’s | Copenhagen, Aarhus, SDU | Tuition and entry conditions vary by programme |
| Interdisciplinary master’s | Roskilde, Aalborg | Confirm that the degree is open to external applicants |
A course taught in English is not the same as a complete English degree. A complete degree can also carry subject-specific admission conditions that an English filter does not show. The bachelor’s routes after Indian Class XII and the master’s degree-fit guide separate these two decisions.
Are public universities in Denmark free for Indian students?
Normally no. An Indian citizen without a qualifying Danish residence exemption should plan as a fee-paying student. The official national guidance gives an annual orientation range of DKK 45,000 to DKK 120,000, about INR 6.6 lakh to INR 17.6 lakh at the planning rate used here.
Annual tuition fees for full-degree students are DKK 45,000 to DKK 120,000.Study in Denmark
That national range is an orientation, not a cap. SDU and Aarhus currently publish EUR 17,300 yearly for several science and engineering routes, which is about DKK 129,000. The exact programme invoice therefore overrides the national range and every university-wide average.
DKK amount × 14.69 = approximate INR amount
ECB reference inputs for 30 July 2026 give EUR 1 as INR 109.808 and DKK 7.4749. Bank and card rates will differ.
A single comparison currency makes unlike invoices easier to read. For example, AAU’s DKK 55,600 yearly bachelor’s figure becomes about INR 8.2 lakh at this planning rate, while a EUR 8,000 semester fee still needs two semesters before it can be compared with a yearly figure. The conversion is a shortlist tool only. The university invoice fixes the payable currency, and the bank fixes the final INR cost.
City cost can reverse a tuition-only comparison. DTU’s capital-area student budget estimates EUR 1,244 to EUR 1,840 monthly on campus and EUR 1,650 to EUR 2,800 outside campus. AAU housing in Aalborg runs from DKK 3,200 to DKK 4,700 monthly. SDU’s student examples show DKK 3,800 rent in Odense and DKK 2,500 in Sonderborg, with deposits and first-month purchases adding upfront cash.
These figures are not directly interchangeable. The DTU figures cover a full monthly basket, while the AAU and SDU numbers are housing or student examples. Their useful message is the direction of pressure. Copenhagen and Lyngby need a higher starting budget, a regional campus can reduce rent, and a real housing offer remains more reliable than a city label.
Scholarships do not make every public university free. The national scholarship page says universities administer a limited number of government scholarships for highly qualified non-EU students. Coverage may include a full or partial tuition waiver and a living grant. An award belongs outside the base budget until the university confirms it. The Denmark scholarships guide handles the institution-level award comparison.
How do application routes differ by university?
All university bachelor’s applications use the national Optagelse.dk route, while master’s applications go to the chosen university’s own portal. The official application guide says applicants with a non-Danish upper-secondary qualification use the 15 March at 12 noon CET deadline for undergraduate study.
The official national admission overview allows up to eight programme priorities and returns no more than one offer at the highest eligible priority. That means programme order matters. A lower choice does not produce a second offer if a higher eligible choice succeeds.
Master’s routes differ more. At CBS, Group 2 means applicants who need a Danish student residence permit, and its current deadline is 15 January. Other universities use their own deadlines, priority limits and document formats, so the national bachelor’s date cannot stand in for a master’s portal.
- Find the exact programme. Record the study level, campus, language, intake and official programme URL.
- Test academic fit. Match the Indian qualification and subject evidence to the programme’s stated requirements.
- Record the route. Use Optagelse.dk for bachelor’s study and the institution portal for master’s study.
- Record every deadline. Keep application, document, language-test, fee and offer-response dates in separate columns.
- Record payment conditions. Note the deposit, instalment schedule and consequence of missing a payment from the official fee page.
One AU rule deserves early attention. A fee-paying bachelor’s applicant must have completed the qualifying examination before the 15 March application deadline. An Indian student sitting Class XII exams in the same year may therefore be unable to use that intake, even if the final marks would otherwise be strong.
How should you use Denmark university rankings?
A ranking is useful for finding a department, not for ordering the final application list. Overall rank cannot tell you whether the required degree is taught in English, accepts your qualification or fits your budget.
Consider an English engineering bachelor’s applicant comparing UCPH and DTU. UCPH may appear higher in an overall table, but all its bachelor’s programmes are in Danish. DTU’s General Engineering degree is taught in English, so DTU remains in this student’s shortlist and UCPH drops out. The apparent order reverses because the study-level condition comes before institutional rank.
How do you build a Denmark university shortlist?
A usable shortlist is a small sheet of exact programmes with no missing decision field. Starting with eight university names and filling the evidence later hides the first disqualifying condition.
- Copy the exact programme URL. Record its degree level, campus, intake and teaching language in the same row.
- Attach your academic test. Add the Indian qualification, required subjects or bachelor’s credits and accepted English evidence.
- Enter dated costs. Keep tuition, rent, other living costs, deposit and arrival cash in separate DKK and INR columns.
- Mark the application route. Record Optagelse.dk or the named university portal, every deadline and the offer-response rule.
- Delete an unsupported row. If the 2027 page doesn’t confirm external admission, language or price, it isn’t ready for the final shortlist.
The final list should contain two or three programmes that meet every academic and financial limit, one stretch with a clearly named weakness, and at least one option that remains workable without a scholarship. If every choice depends on an award or future part-time earnings, the shortlist is not yet funded.
The Denmark study hub connects the finished shortlist to admissions, costs, scholarships and the residence-permit process.
- Denmark has eight universities, including broad, technical, business and IT specialists.
- English choice is much wider at master’s level than at bachelor’s level.
- UCPH has no English bachelor’s degree, while DTU currently has one and ITU’s international bachelor’s route is Data Science.
- Non-EU Indian students normally pay tuition, and the exact programme fee overrides the national range.
- City cost can change which apparently cheaper university is affordable.
- Undergraduate applications use Optagelse.dk, while master’s applications use university portals.
- A current programme can be closed to general admission, so availability needs its own check.
FAQ
How many universities are there in Denmark?
Denmark has eight universities on the official Danish Agency list. They are Copenhagen, Aarhus, Southern Denmark, Roskilde, Aalborg, DTU, CBS and ITU. University colleges, business academies and artistic institutions are separate recognised higher education routes and should not be added to the university count.
Which is the best university in Denmark for Indian students?
There is no universal best university. DTU is a natural engineering search, CBS specialises in business, ITU in digital fields, and Copenhagen, Aarhus and SDU offer broader subject choice. The final decision depends on the exact programme, English availability, entry fit, tuition and city budget.
Are public universities in Denmark free for Indian students?
Normally no. An Indian citizen without a qualifying residence exemption should plan to pay tuition. The national guide gives DKK 45,000 to DKK 120,000 yearly as an orientation, but current university fees can exceed it. Use the exact programme fee for the intended intake.
Which Danish universities offer bachelor’s degrees in English?
Aarhus, SDU, Aalborg and CBS publish multiple English bachelor’s choices. DTU currently offers General Engineering, and ITU’s international bachelor’s route is Data Science. UCPH teaches all bachelor’s degrees in Danish. Recheck the programme catalogue because languages and intakes can change.
Which Danish universities are strong for engineering?
DTU is Denmark’s specialist technical university. Aalborg, Aarhus and SDU also publish substantial engineering study, including English options. Compare the exact field, prior subject requirements, campus, tuition and facilities. An overall engineering reputation cannot show whether one specialisation fits your academic record.
What is the cheapest university in Denmark?
No university is cheapest across every programme and city. Aalborg currently publishes a lower business bachelor’s fee than its engineering fees, while SDU and Aarhus price by faculty. Copenhagen-area living costs can also offset a lower tuition figure. Compare total yearly cost for the exact programme.
How do Indian students apply to Danish universities?
Bachelor’s applications use Optagelse.dk, with 15 March at noon CET as the usual deadline for foreign school qualifications. Master’s applicants apply through each university’s portal and follow its own deadline, document and priority rules. Academic eligibility is assessed separately for the exact programme.
