Masters in Denmark for Indian students normally means a 2-year, 120 ECTS degree. A three-year or four-year Indian bachelor may reach programme review, but duration alone does not settle eligibility. The university checks whether the award matches Danish bachelor level and then counts the subjects inside the transcript against named prerequisite groups. The first useful Denmark comparison places one current programme beside one complete Indian transcript rather than grouping programmes by degree title.

The Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science describes a Danish university bachelor as 3 years and 180 ECTS. The research-based master’s builds on a relevant bachelor. This national structure supplies the reference point, while the chosen university makes the individual decision on level and course content.

Does a three-year or four-year Indian degree qualify for a Danish master’s?

Either duration may qualify, but neither duration creates automatic eligibility across Denmark. The university first checks whether your award matches a Danish bachelor in level and workload. It then checks whether the field and course content fit the chosen master’s.

A Danish university bachelor is normally three years and 180 ECTS. That does not mean every three-year Indian BA, BSc, BCom or BCA is automatically treated as the same award. Aarhus University asks for a qualification comparable to a Danish bachelor in both level and duration. SDU separately warns that a foreign bachelor may not match a Danish bachelor in level and workload.

To qualify for admission you must meet both the General and Specific admission requirements as well as the English language requirement.Aarhus University

The practical difference for an Indian applicant is simple. A four-year BTech usually gives more academic volume to assess, but it isn’t proof that the required areas are present. A three-year honours degree may have strong depth in one field, yet the institution can still decide that its level or workload does not equal the required Danish bachelor. There is no responsible nationwide yes or no for a degree label.

What the degree review can showGreen permits the programme review to continue. Amber needs an individual decision. Red does not establish eligibility.
Your academic record Likely review position What resolves the question
Recognised four-year BTech in the programme’s field Proceed to programme-specific review Official degree, transcript and programme-specific subject match
Three-year honours BA, BSc or BCom Individual level and workload review Official curriculum, total study load and the university’s assessment
Three-year pass degree plus a postgraduate diploma The combination may need a formal assessment Documents for both awards and the target university’s rules on combined qualifications
Degree title or total years without a transcript No dependable conclusion Course-level evidence is still missing

A general level assessment can help describe a foreign award, but it doesn’t admit you to a programme. Aarhus University says the assessment does not guarantee admission, and the Danish Agency says the institution decides master’s admission.

If you already hold a master’s-equivalent qualification, Aarhus explains that the second-master’s rule may give priority to applicants without one. Admission to another degree may be possible only if places remain, subject to limited exemptions. Disclose the existing award and check the chosen university’s current rule before paying an application fee.

Why do bachelor subjects and credits decide master’s eligibility?

The subjects that the university counts are often the decisive factor because Danish programmes publish minimum academic content, not only acceptable degree names. An admissions team may place two similar-looking Indian subjects into different categories after reading their official syllabi. The course title on the marksheet may not contain enough information.

The variation is substantial. UCPH Bioinformatics for the 2027/28 academic year requires five separate subject groups. RUC Computer Science divides its requirement between practical programming and software analysis. SDU Data Science accepts applicants from broad fields but still expects a methods course or a substantial independent bachelor project.

Programme Published bachelor content What can cause a mismatch
UCPH Bioinformatics, 2027/28 10 ECTS mathematics, 10 ECTS biology group, 5 ECTS programming, 10 ECTS bioinformatics and 5 ECTS machine learning A computing or biotechnology degree can still lack one named group
ITU Data Science Named technical subjects documented through a compliance form Work experience is not counted as academic preparation
RUC Computer Science 15 ECTS programming and practical systems development plus 10 ECTS software analysis and design Only formal credits completed by the bachelor graduation date are assessed
SDU Data Science 5 ECTS theory and scientific method or a 10 ECTS independent bachelor project A degree without a qualifying method course or thesis can miss the rule
CBS master’s programmes Programme-specific academic ECTS from research-based bachelor study Practice-heavy study, work experience and master’s-level courses may not fill bachelor requirements

This is also why adding a short online certificate after graduation rarely repairs a missing requirement. RUC counts formal study completed as part of or before the bachelor graduation date. UCPH’s IT and Cognition route says only bachelor-level courses inside the completed bachelor are assessed. CBS likewise separates academic bachelor study from work experience and later master’s-level study.

Eligibility and selection are separate outcomes. ITU first checks its academic subjects, then gives grades half of the selection weight. Aarhus says every master’s has limited intake and publishes ranking criteria on each programme page. A transcript can therefore clear every minimum and still lose a place to stronger eligible applicants. A statement of purpose or academic-interest note supports selection where requested. It does not replace a missing formal prerequisite.

Supplementary study is not one national solution. Aarhus permits up to 30 ECTS of bachelor-level supplementation, but it must be completed before the bachelor degree itself is finished. SDU says most programme requirements must sit inside the qualifying bachelor, with limited programme exceptions. A final-year applicant can sometimes still choose electives that close a gap. A graduate often cannot.

Which Danish master’s programmes fit different Indian degree profiles?

The best programme depends on what your bachelor actually contains. The matrix below does not predict admission. It shows where a degree profile has a plausible academic starting point and where the current published rule creates a clear problem.

Indian degree and programme fitGreen is a plausible academic starting point. Amber needs careful subject mapping. Red shows a published mismatch.
Indian degree profile Programme example Fit under the published rule Evidence to prepare
BTech CSE with algorithms, data structures, systems development and software design RUC Computer Science Plausible if the university counts at least 15 ECTS programming and 10 ECTS analysis and design Transcript plus syllabi showing practical work and design content
BSc biotechnology with programming and statistics UCPH Bioinformatics Possible only when all five published subject groups are present Course-by-course map for 40 ECTS across the named groups
BCom or BA with a research methods course or a substantial dissertation SDU Data Science Plausible conversion route because prior computer science is not required Method-course syllabus or project records for SDU to assess against its 10 ECTS requirement
BCA with strong coding but little mathematics ITU Data Science Uncertain until every named technical category in the compliance form is matched Official course descriptions, workload and grades
Interdisciplinary bachelor with a minor in engineering Most DTU MSc Engineering programmes DTU states that it does not accept an interdisciplinary bachelor or an engineering minor for this general route A different programme route, not a stronger statement of purpose
Practice-oriented business degree with internships and management work CBS academic master’s Work and practice may add context but may not satisfy research-based academic ECTS Research-based bachelor syllabi that match the programme’s subject categories

The SDU row is the non-obvious case. SDU Data Science is intended for applicants without a Software Engineering or Computer Science background. A research-trained BCom, BA or science graduate can meet its method or project route, while a technical graduate may still miss ITU’s named mathematics and computing subjects. How can you compare an Indian transcript with Danish ECTS requirements?

A useful self-check uses the credit figures on your own transcript. It can show whether a subject is substantial or absent, but it cannot turn Indian credits into an official ECTS total. The university decides how the documented workload and content compare with its requirement.

You are not required to convert grades or credits to the Danish or European systems.University of Copenhagen

Submit the original credits, hours and course descriptions requested by the university. Use the calculation below only as a screening ratio.

Subject share = subject credits in your degree ÷ total degree credits × 100

Suppose a four-year Indian BTech has 160 institutional credits, including 18 credits in programming and practical systems development. The subject share is 18 ÷ 160 × 100, or 11.25%. This result does not prove that the study equals RUC’s 15 ECTS requirement. It tells you that the category is present and worth documenting through official syllabi and workload records. A zero or very small share exposes a likely gap before you spend on the application.

Step What you enter What the entry tells you
1 Exact degree title, university, duration and graduation date Whether the general degree rule has a plausible match
2 Every prerequisite category copied from the current programme page The academic content the university will assess
3 Transcript courses placed beside one category each Where evidence is strong, uncertain or missing
4 Official syllabus, contact hours, project work and assessment method Why a course belongs in the selected category
5 Estimated workload share, clearly labelled as an estimate Whether the application appears worth the fee and effort
6 University form or compliance sheet using original figures The evidence used for the institution’s official assessment

A course called Software Engineering may contain project management rather than software modelling. A course called Computer Applications may contain real programming. The official description shows what was taught and assessed, so place uncertain courses in a separate column instead of forcing them into a category.

Project work needs the same care. A final-year project may satisfy a programme that asks for an independent bachelor project, yet it may contribute nothing to a requirement for taught mathematics or programming. The project report, credit value and supervision record explain its academic role. A line saying project in the final semester usually does not.

Will an English-medium Indian degree remove the language-test requirement?

Not reliably. Each university defines accepted English evidence, and an English-medium degree that works at one institution may be rejected at another. A medium-of-instruction letter is useful only when the exact university page accepts it.

DTU’s rules applying from the admission period starting 15 August 2026 require IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.0 in every section, or one of its accepted TOEFL or Cambridge routes. DTU explicitly rejects a bachelor or master’s taught in English as proof, along with university and employer statements.

DTU does not grant exemptions from the minimum test score requirements.Technical University of Denmark

The national English B orientation is commonly around IELTS 6.5, but some programmes require English A. Keep a valid IELTS Academic or accepted alternative ready unless every chosen programme confirms another route in writing.

How do applications and deadlines work for Indian students?

Master’s applications go directly to each university, not through Denmark’s coordinated undergraduate portal. Deadlines and the number of choices vary, so every university needs its own calendar.

University Current autumn deadline Application detail
UCPH 15 January Portal opens 15 November and up to three UCPH master’s choices are allowed
DTU 15 January Portal opens 1 December and up to two MSc choices are allowed
RUC 15 January One annual September start under the current schedule
SDU Computer Science 1 February Current programme page also shows 1 September for a February start
Other programmes Use the programme’s fee-paying applicant line Do not copy another faculty’s date

These are the current published dates, not a promise that every 2027 round will remain unchanged. The Denmark admission requirements process separates undergraduate and master’s routes. Recheck the exact programme after the university labels its 2027 intake.

A conditional offer can also affect timing. UCPH allows a final-semester applicant to apply but does not begin the non-EU residence-permit process until all admission conditions are met. An Indian university that issues final proof late can therefore turn an academic offer into a practical timing problem. The relevant date is when the awarding university can issue an official completion letter, not only when convocation happens.

Documents should be planned backwards from that date. UCPH asks for the degree structure, grading system, transcript and relevant course descriptions, while programme forms may require each course to be assigned to a subject area. Collecting these records after the portal opens can leave too little time for official stamps, translations or a response to an admissions query.

How much do master’s degrees in Denmark cost for Indian students?

Indian students normally pay tuition, and the current examples below range from about DKK 112,000 to DKK 129,000 per academic year. In rupees, that is roughly INR 16.6 lakh to INR 19.1 lakh before living costs. Programme fees can change before 2027.

The conversion uses the European Central Bank reference rates for 14 August 2026. EUR 1 equalled DKK 7.4757 and INR 110.3818, which gives DKK 1 equal to INR 14.7654. Banks and card providers will use a different transaction rate.

University and programme basis Annual tuition (EUR) Approx. annual tuition (DKK) Approx. annual tuition (INR)
DTU current general MSc rate 15,000 112,136 16.56 lakh
CBS full-time master’s 16,000 119,611 17.66 lakh
RUC Computer Science, September 2026 entry 16,000 119,611 17.66 lakh
ITU full-time MSc rate 16,500 123,349 18.21 lakh
SDU Science or Engineering, from September 2026 17,300 129,333 19.10 lakh

Published tuition examples converted with ECB reference rates from 14 August 2026

DTU says its EUR 7,500 semester rate is likely to be revised, so it is an orientation figure rather than a 2027 quote. SDU requires newly entering students from September 2026 to pay the whole first year in advance. SDU starts the residence process after that payment is registered.

Tuition is only one part of the first-year plan. The cost of studying in Denmark adds housing, deposits, daily expenses and the residence-permit funds requirement. A part-time job should not be used to make an unfunded tuition plan look affordable.

Payment schedules can matter as much as the annual total. CBS invoices by semester, while SDU’s current rule asks new September entrants to fund the full first year in advance. Record the first payment amount and date beside each annual fee so the loan sanction and foreign remittance are ready.

Are master’s degrees free in Denmark for Indian students?

No, not for an Indian citizen applying from India under the normal fee-paying route. Tuition-free public study generally applies to EU, EEA and Swiss citizens and to certain people whose Danish residence status creates an exemption.

Scholarships exist, but they aren’t a national full-funding form that every applicant can submit. Universities receive limited Danish government scholarship allocations and decide how to award them. ITU says it normally offers state scholarships to only three or four exceptionally talented non-EU MSc applicants and considers admitted students automatically.

CBS publishes a tuition waiver and DKK 8,000 monthly stipend for the limited government scholarships it awards. UCPH says the awards are competitive and based on academic achievement. The scholarships in Denmark comparison separates automatic consideration, tuition waivers and living grants by university.

An admission budget should work without a scholarship unless the award is already confirmed.

Application methods differ. ITU and UCPH consider eligible applicants automatically, while CBS asks scholarship candidates for a personal statement. Follow the stated route instead of sending unrequested financial documents.

What application sequence gives an Indian student the clearest answer?

Use this order to turn one programme page into a complete application file.

  1. Choose one current master’s programme and save its admission page for the intended intake.
  2. Check whether your award has a plausible bachelor-level and workload match.
  3. Copy every named subject category, credit minimum and exclusion into a transcript worksheet.
  4. Attach official course descriptions to subjects whose titles do not show their academic content.
  5. Check whether missing subjects may be supplemented and whether the allowed timing still works for a graduate.
  6. Secure the exact English evidence accepted by that institution.
  7. Record the fee-paying applicant deadline, choice cap, application fee and tuition-payment date.
  8. Build the full budget before treating a scholarship as available money.
  9. Confirm when your Indian university can issue final proof of completion.
  10. After admission and payment, prepare the Danish student residence permit evidence.
Key takeaways

  • A three-year or four-year Indian bachelor can be assessed, but duration alone does not settle Danish master’s eligibility.
  • Programme-counted bachelor subjects and credits often decide the result after degree-level equivalence.
  • UCPH Bioinformatics, ITU Data Science, RUC Computer Science and SDU Data Science publish materially different academic starting points.
  • Indian applicants should submit original credits, hours and course descriptions rather than present a self-made ECTS conversion as official.
  • Current published tuition examples range from about INR 16.6 lakh to INR 19.1 lakh per year before living costs.
  • Current non-EU autumn deadlines include 15 January at UCPH, DTU and RUC, while programme-specific dates vary elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do a master’s in Denmark after a three-year Indian bachelor’s?

A three-year Indian bachelor’s may qualify, but Denmark has no universal acceptance rule for every award. The university checks whether your qualification matches a Danish bachelor in level and workload, then applies programme subject requirements. Use the current programme page and submit the full curriculum, transcript and course descriptions requested.

Is a four-year BTech automatically eligible for a master’s in Denmark?

No. A four-year BTech gives the university substantial bachelor-level study to assess, but it can still lack a named subject group or fall outside a programme’s accepted field. DTU also excludes interdisciplinary degrees from its general MSc Engineering route. Degree duration is one condition, not the final admission decision.

How much does a master’s in Denmark cost for an Indian student?

Current examples in this guide run from EUR 15,000 to EUR 17,300 per year, roughly INR 16.6 lakh to INR 19.1 lakh using ECB rates from 14 August 2026. Fees vary by programme and may change for 2027. Housing, deposits, living costs and residence-permit funds sit outside tuition.

Are public university master’s degrees free in Denmark?

They aren’t normally free for an Indian citizen applying from India. EU, EEA and Swiss citizens generally do not pay, while some Danish residence permits create exemptions. Limited university-administered scholarships may waive tuition or add a living grant, but there is no single national full-scholarship application for every master’s.

Can work experience replace missing academic credits in Denmark?

Usually not when the programme publishes bachelor-level academic prerequisites. ITU Data Science says work experience is not considered for its academic requirement, and CBS does not use work experience to fill bachelor-level subject ECTS. Experience may still help a statement or selection process after you have met the formal academic conditions.

Do Danish universities accept an English-medium certificate from India?

Acceptance varies, so a medium-of-instruction certificate is not a safe Denmark-wide route. DTU explicitly rejects an English-medium bachelor and university statements as language proof under its current rules. Check each programme’s accepted evidence and keep IELTS Academic, TOEFL or Cambridge results ready when the institution requires a test.

Can I convert my Indian university credits to ECTS myself?

You can make a workload estimate for shortlisting, but do not present it as the university’s official conversion. UCPH asks applicants to submit original credits or course hours and says they need not convert them to ECTS. Official syllabi, workload records and compliance forms let the admissions team make its own category and credit assessment.

Which universities are best for data science in Denmark?

ITU, UCPH, SDU, DTU and Aarhus offer strong but different data-related routes. The best fit depends on your bachelor subjects. ITU expects a technical compliance map, UCPH Bioinformatics mixes biology and computing, and SDU Data Science deliberately accepts broader academic backgrounds that include research methods or a substantial bachelor project.
