Denmark student visa requirements for Indian students are really residence-permit requirements. For a degree lasting more than 90 days, the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) decides the case. ST1 is the two-part study application. Your university completes its part, you complete yours, and you then record biometrics, meaning your facial image, fingerprints and signature. Before paying a non-refundable amount, confirm whether the exact programme is state approved or relies on an assessment from the Danish Evaluation Institute (EVA).
That programme classification controls whether a new permit includes student work, accompanying-family and graduate job-seeking rights. A complete application can therefore belong to a programme whose rights don’t fit your budget or career plan. This page keeps file readiness and programme suitability as separate decisions.
Do Indian students need a visa or residence permit for Denmark?
You need a Danish residence permit for a full degree, not a short-stay Schengen visa. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs process directs study stays longer than 90 days to the residence route. SIRI’s higher-education scheme covers complete degrees, exchange study and approved preparatory courses.
The ordinary route requires full-time admission and enough command of the teaching language to participate. SIRI doesn’t publish one universal IELTS score for the permit. Your programme’s admission requirements decide the academic and language evidence needed for admission. The wider university and intake picture is in the study in Denmark guide.

Why does Danish programme status matter?
A state-approved programme has approval from a Danish state authority. A non-state-approved programme can still support a study application when it holds an advisory statement from EVA, the Danish Evaluation Institute. For a new applicant, these categories can lead to different rights even when both use ST1.
| Programme classification | Study residence | Student work | Graduate job seeking | Accompanying family |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| State-approved higher education | Available when all permit conditions are met | Limited student work permission | Available for eligible completed degrees under the current rules | Eligible family members may apply separately |
| Non-state-approved programme supported by an EVA statement, with a new application on or after 2 May 2025 | Available while the EVA statement and other conditions are met | No student work permission | No graduate job-seeking permit from this programme category | No accompanying-family permit from this programme category |
SIRI’s education-status page identifies programmes that rely on an EVA statement, while its May 2025 notice sets out the lost rights for new applicants in that category. The Denmark universities guide can help with the institution shortlist, but the institution’s written answer should name the exact programme and campus before a non-refundable payment. Institutional accreditation alone doesn’t settle the programme classification.
What should your permit-readiness record contain?
This Nbyula record has no score. Each decision is marked verified, missing or adverse. Verified means the evidence and expected outcome agree. Missing means an action or document is incomplete. Adverse means the rule has been checked and the result conflicts with the student’s budget, family or career plan. An adverse result never turns positive merely because it is understood.
| Decision | What verified means | What remains missing or adverse |
|---|---|---|
| Programme classification | The exact programme and campus have a written state-approved or EVA-supported result. | Missing when classification is unknown. Adverse when the resulting rights don’t fit the plan. |
| ST1 application | The university part, student part, case order ID and SIRI fee can be matched. | Missing when either part, payment or identifier is incomplete. |
| Financial evidence | The applicable paid-tuition, student-name funds, loan or scholarship document is ready. | Missing when the evidence belongs to the wrong person, is stale or covers the wrong branch. |
| Biometrics | Biometrics are recorded, or the official no-slot procedure is documented. | Missing when no valid appointment or notification supports a late slot. |
| Student work | The work permission shown by the programme category is recorded in the budget. | Adverse when the budget needs work that the category doesn’t permit. |
| Graduate period | The current period for the exact degree category is recorded separately from proposed law. | Adverse when the career plan assumes a period the category doesn’t provide. |
Before submission, the ST1 and evidence items must be verified. After submission, the same record remains open until biometrics are recorded or the no-slot procedure is documented. Programme suitability is a separate conclusion: any adverse result must be accepted without breaking the funding or career plan.
Consider a student whose ST1 link, tuition receipt, passport copy and financial evidence are present. The file may be ready to submit, while the biometric decision remains pending until the post-submission step is completed. If the exact course relies on an EVA statement and the student needs part-time work to meet monthly expenses, the programme is still unsuitable for that plan. The record preserves both conclusions without forcing them into one label.
How much proof of funds do you need?
DKK means Danish kroner. SIRI’s 2026 self-support amount is DKK 7,426 for each study month in Denmark, capped at 12 months and DKK 89,112. Using the European Central Bank reference rates for 14 August 2026, DKK 1 was about INR 14.7654. The monthly amount was therefore about INR 1.10 lakh and the maximum about INR 13.16 lakh. Bank and remittance rates will differ.
Funds to document = DKK 7,426 x study months in Denmark, capped at 12 months
An eight-month stay produces a worked requirement of DKK 7,426 x 8, which is DKK 59,408 or about INR 8.77 lakh at that planning rate. A 14-month programme still uses the 12-month cap of DKK 89,112 for this evidence calculation.
A fee-paying full-degree student has another evidence path. Under SIRI’s paid-tuition exception, proof that first-semester tuition has been paid removes the need for additional self-support documentation. The receipt satisfies the permit evidence requirement. It doesn’t provide cash for rent, food or transport.
| Student position | Evidence to prepare | What cannot replace it |
|---|---|---|
| Fee-paying full-degree student | Receipt showing first-semester tuition has been paid | A parent’s promise instead of the tuition receipt |
| Tuition waiver without living support | Accessible funds in the student’s name, a granted loan or a scholarship covering living costs | The tuition waiver by itself |
| Scholarship covering tuition and living costs | Grant letter naming the student, amount and currency | An unsigned sponsorship note |
| Guest or exchange student | Student-name funds, granted loan or scholarship at the monthly rate | Income expected from a future Danish job |
When a bank statement is required, the self-support rules require it to be no more than 30 days old and to show the student’s full name, balance and currency. The money must be accessible. Parent-name statements, restricted shares, bonds and investment portfolios aren’t accepted for this purpose. Multiple statements must carry the same date. Plan the actual cash requirement separately using the Denmark study and living-cost guide, then check whether a Denmark scholarship changes the evidence branch.

How do you complete ST1 from India?
The online ST1 process has an institution part and a student part. The Danish institution starts its part with the student’s email, and SIRI sends access to the student part. The student creates a case order ID and pays the SIRI fee before submitting their part. The case order ID links the payment and application. It isn’t an approval number or a payment receipt.
VFS Global is the private application centre authorised to receive residence documentation and biometrics in India. The Danish mission is the embassy or consular authority handling the application abroad. Their appointment and service charges are separate from the SIRI application.
| Step | Applicant or institution action | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Verify full-time admission and the exact programme classification. | The rights position is known before payment. |
| 2 | The institution completes its online part with the student’s correct email. | SIRI sends access to the student part. |
| 3 | The student creates the case order ID and pays DKK 3,060 in the same calendar year as submission. | The fee can be linked to the case. |
| 4 | The student prepares every passport page and the applicable financial evidence. | Attachments are ready before submission. |
| 5 | The student completes and submits their ST1 part. | The normal 14-day biometric period begins. |
| 6 | The student pays the mission fee and attends the authorised VFS appointment. | The passport, application and biometrics can be matched. |
| 7 | The student keeps the submission, payment and biometric confirmations. | SIRI can request more evidence or an interview during assessment. |
The SIRI fee manual says the payment-status screen is not an acceptable receipt, so the actual payment receipt belongs with the submission confirmation.
What does the Denmark student permit cost and how long does it take?
An Indian applicant pays two official government charges and one private service charge. SIRI charges for deciding the residence case. The Danish mission charges for handling the overseas application. VFS sets a separate service fee for its appointment channel.
| Item | Type | Amount or time | Live source |
|---|---|---|---|
| SIRI higher-education case fee | Danish government fee | DKK 3,060, about INR 45,200 at the 14 August planning rate | SIRI scheme page |
| Mission handling fee in India | Danish government fee | INR 26,160 for 2026 | Denmark in India fee schedule |
| VFS service fee | Private application-centre charge | Live amount shown during booking | Authorised VFS Denmark channel |
| Normal SIRI processing time | Published service time | 2 months | SIRI scheme page |
| Case needing more information | Published service time | Up to 3 months | SIRI scheme page |

The published time isn’t a guaranteed travel date. A flexible booking protects the student if SIRI requests more information or takes the longer published period.
Which documents and biometrics do Indian students need?
SIRI’s higher-education checklist asks for the case-fee receipt, a copy of all passport pages including empty pages and both covers, and the financial document that applies to the student’s tuition position. Guest or exchange students also provide proof of enrolment at their home institution.
- Passport copy. Every page and both covers must be clear. The passport rules require at least two empty pages and issue within the previous 10 years.
- Payment records. The file contains the SIRI fee receipt, mission receipt and online submission confirmation.
- Financial document. This is the applicable tuition receipt, bank statement, loan or scholarship letter from the funds section.
- Translations. Under SIRI’s document rules, records requiring translation use an authorised translator and include the original.
- Uploads. Those rules also require legible and complete documents. SIRI cannot open zip archives, cloud-storage links or password-protected files.
The normal biometric deadline is 14 days after online submission. If the Danish mission or VFS cannot offer an appointment within those 14 days, the official no-slot procedure is to book the first available appointment and notify SIRI of its date. This is an exception for unavailable appointments, not a general extension. Missing an available appointment or failing to follow the exception can lead to rejection.
If you fail to have your biometric features recorded before the deadline, your application will be rejected.Danish Immigration Service and SIRI
Under the passport-validity rule, a permit can run only until three months before passport expiry. A short passport can cut the study period and an automatically added graduate period, creating a later extension application.
Can you work while studying in Denmark?
Yes, when the verified programme category includes the limited work permit. The current SIRI rule allows 90 hours in each calendar month from September through May, plus full-time work in June, July and August. Unused hours from one month don’t create a balance for the next.
Working beyond the limit is illegal work. SIRI’s student warning rules allow a warning and fine after a minor breach, while a significant breach can cause immediate revocation. A calendar-month log across all employers prevents one job from hiding hours worked in another.
A mandatory full-time internship follows a separate permission condition. Before it starts, the internship must be part of the programme and approved by the institution under the SIRI higher-education rules.
How long can you stay after graduation?
Under current SIRI guidance checked on 15 August 2026, eligible graduates of state-approved professional bachelor, bachelor, master and PhD programmes can receive up to three years for job seeking. A professional bachelor is an applied bachelor-level degree that prepares students for a named profession. SIRI normally grants the period with the study permit when passport validity allows, so the decision letter is the evidence that it is present.
The job-seeking permit keeps the limited student work schedule. After completing the degree, an eligible graduate can use SIRI’s separate application for work permission without the hour limit. That permission changes the hours allowed during job seeking. It isn’t permanent residence.
Some graduates receive six months instead. SIRI’s six-month guidance includes Academy Profession programmes, which are short-cycle applied higher-education awards, and master’s programmes for working professionals, which combine part-time master’s study with employment. The exact degree category on the decision controls the period.
A student changing degree makes a new residence application. A student delayed on the same degree applies for an extension before the current permit expires and no earlier than four months before expiry.
Has Denmark cut the post-study period to one year?
No. Current SIRI guidance still provides up to three years for the eligible degrees above. On 25 June 2026, the government introduced L 21, a bill proposing a one-year period and tighter accompanying-family rules for some students. Folketinget means the Danish Parliament. Its L 21 record still showed the bill as introduced on 15 August 2026, not enacted. The earlier L 121 proposal had lapsed.
| Question | Current rule on 15 August 2026 | L 21 proposal |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible graduate period | Up to 3 years for the specified completed state-approved degrees | Reduce the 3-year period to 1 year |
| Legal status | Applied by SIRI | Introduced in Parliament, not enacted |
| Future recheck | Use the current SIRI decision for today’s case | Check whether Parliament passed the bill, when it starts and which applicants it covers |
- Programme classification must be checked before non-refundable payment because it controls work, family and graduate rights.
- File readiness and programme suitability are separate. A known adverse rights result remains adverse.
- Eight months of self-support evidence is DKK 59,408, about INR 8.77 lakh at the 14 August 2026 planning rate.
- The 14-day biometric rule has an official no-slot procedure, but it isn’t a general extension.
- L 21 proposed a one-year graduate period but had not replaced the current rule on 15 August 2026.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Denmark student residence-permit fee from India?
SIRI charges DKK 3,060 for the 2026 higher-education case, about INR 45,200 at the stated planning rate. The Danish mission’s India fee is INR 26,160 for 2026. VFS adds a separate private service fee shown during booking. These are separate charges and need a live recheck before payment.
How much bank balance is required for a Denmark student permit?
The 2026 amount is DKK 7,426 per study month, capped at 12 months and DKK 89,112. A fee-paying full-degree student who has paid first-semester tuition can use that receipt instead of extra self-support documentation. When a bank statement is required, the money must be accessible in the student’s name.
Can I use my parents’ bank statement for Denmark?
No. SIRI doesn’t accept a parent-name bank statement or another person’s support declaration as the student’s self-support evidence. The applicable evidence is the student’s own accessible funds, a granted loan or scholarship, or a first-semester tuition receipt when the paid-tuition condition applies to the full-degree applicant.
How long does Denmark student residence processing take from India?
SIRI publishes a normal processing time of two months for higher education. A case needing more information can take up to three months. These are service times rather than guaranteed travel dates. A flexible booking reduces the risk of loss if SIRI requests another document or uses the longer period.
Do I need IELTS for a Denmark student permit?
No universal IELTS score applies to the residence permit. SIRI requires enough ability in the teaching language to participate, while the university and programme decide which test, school evidence or waiver supports admission. The relevant language result is the one stated in the programme’s official admission process.
Can international students work in Denmark while studying?
Yes, when the programme category and residence decision include student work permission. The current limit is 90 hours per calendar month from September to May and full-time work in June, July and August. A programme supported only by an EVA statement may not carry that permission for a new applicant.
Is Denmark’s post-study period one year or three years?
Current SIRI guidance gives eligible graduates of specified state-approved degrees up to three years for job seeking. L 21 proposes reducing that period to one year, but Parliament still listed it as introduced on 15 August 2026. A later applicant should check both SIRI and the parliamentary record again.
What happens if my biometric appointment is after 14 days?
If the Danish mission or VFS has no appointment within 14 days, SIRI’s official procedure is to book the first available slot and notify the agency of its date. This exception applies to unavailable appointments, not a missed available slot. Keep the booking and notification evidence with the application record.
