For a fee-paying applicant, the cost of study in Denmark for Indian students starts at DKK (Danish kroner) 189,198, equivalent to EUR 25,309 or about INR 27.9 lakh, in this regional first-year model. The Copenhagen model reaches DKK 245,236 to DKK 291,884, about INR 36.2 lakh to INR 43.1 lakh. Higher IT University of Copenhagen tuition and Copenhagen living costs create the annual gap, while full-year regional billing narrows the difference at arrival. The next action for a 2027 Denmark applicant is to copy the exact programme invoice and signed lease, then calculate annual consumption and cash due by arrival separately.
The Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI) asks for up to DKK 89,112 in self-support evidence at the 2026 level, but accepts paid first-semester tuition as that evidence. Adding the DKK 89,112 evidence cap to paid tuition as another charge would overstate the cost. INR conversions use DKK 1 = INR 14.7654 from the European Central Bank (ECB) reference rates for 14 August 2026.
What does it cost to study in Denmark for an Indian student?
These 2026-based examples total INR 27.9 lakh for a lower-cost regional year and INR 36.2 lakh to INR 43.1 lakh for Copenhagen. They model a fee-paying Indian student, not a national average. The exact programme, available room and lifestyle decide the student’s real total.
| Number | What it means | Does it add to first-year cost? |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition and living | Money consumed across the year | Yes |
| Permit funds | Liquid money or accepted evidence available to support yourself | No, not automatically |
| Housing deposit | Cash held against the lease and potentially returned after deductions | No, but it raises the cash peak |
| Prepaid rent | Rent for the final months of the lease, paid early | Already inside annual rent |
A 2027 budget needs the offer letter, signed lease and live SIRI page because most institutions have not published 2027 fees. The main study in Denmark guide places this funding check within the full application route.
How much is university tuition in Denmark for international students?
An Indian citizen arriving on a study residence permit should normally budget as a fee-paying student from outside the European Union. The national tuition guide gives DKK 45,000 to DKK 120,000 a year, about INR 6.6 lakh to INR 17.7 lakh, as a reference range. The programme invoice overrides that range, and current science or engineering fees can be higher.
| Official example | Published tuition | Yearly DKK | Approximate INR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aalborg University Economics and Business Administration bachelor’s | DKK 55,600 a year | 55,600 | INR 8.2 lakh |
| Selected Roskilde University master’s programmes | EUR 10,000 a year | 74,757 | INR 11.0 lakh |
| Aarhus University Arts and most business and social science master’s programmes | EUR 13,000 a year | 97,184 | INR 14.4 lakh |
| Copenhagen Business School full-time bachelor’s | DKK 49,000 a semester | 98,000 | INR 14.5 lakh |
| Copenhagen Business School full-time master’s | DKK 60,000 a semester | 120,000 | INR 17.7 lakh |
| IT University of Copenhagen master’s, 2026 admission | EUR 8,250 a semester | 123,349 | INR 18.2 lakh |
| University of Southern Denmark Science or Engineering | EUR 17,300 a year | 129,330 | INR 19.1 lakh |
The spread also shows why calling an entire university cheap is misleading. Aalborg University’s business bachelor’s example is DKK 55,600 a year, while the University of Southern Denmark’s science and engineering example is DKK 129,330. The student’s usable comparison is the exact programme fee, its billing period and what the tuition excludes, not the institution name alone.
The University of Southern Denmark example exceeds the national DKK 120,000 reference range. Its live September 2026 programme rate is the more specific figure and therefore overrides the national reference for that programme.
A semester figure isn’t comparable with a yearly figure. The IT University of Copenhagen’s EUR 8,250 and Copenhagen Business School’s DKK 60,000 master’s amounts both need two payments to produce a yearly tuition total. Aarhus says books and living expenses are outside tuition, while the Technical University of Denmark excludes equipment such as computers and calculators.
What does the first-year cash-flow model show?
The regional case uses the University of Southern Denmark’s September 2026 Humanities tuition and the low end of Study in Denmark’s itemised monthly budget, including DKK 3,000 rent. The Copenhagen case uses the IT University of Copenhagen’s 2026 tuition and the University of Copenhagen’s complete monthly estimate. Both add the same permit fee and a DKK 4,000 one-off arrival estimate.
| Cost line | Regional case | Copenhagen case |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition basis | University of Southern Denmark Humanities, EUR 10,800 DKK 80,738 INR 11.9 lakh |
IT University of Copenhagen master’s, EUR 16,500 DKK 123,349 INR 18.2 lakh |
| Twelve months’ living | DKK 8,450 monthly DKK 101,400 INR 15.0 lakh |
EUR 1,280 to EUR 1,800 monthly DKK 114,827 to DKK 161,475 INR 17.0 lakh to INR 23.8 lakh |
| Study residence-permit fee | DKK 3,060 INR 45,000 |
DKK 3,060 INR 45,000 |
| Arrival allowance | DKK 4,000 INR 59,000 |
DKK 4,000 INR 59,000 |
| First-year consumption total | DKK 189,198 INR 27.9 lakh |
DKK 245,236 to DKK 291,884 INR 36.2 lakh to INR 43.1 lakh |
The DKK 4,000 estimate covers one-off additions that aren’t already in the monthly basket, such as temporary insurance, luggage and basic room setup. Airfare remains outside both models because a fixed India-to-Denmark fare would quickly become stale.
EUR 1 = INR 110.3818 and DKK 7.4757
INR 110.3818 ÷ DKK 7.4757 = INR 14.7654 per DKK

Is Copenhagen more expensive than a regional student city?
Usually, but the honest comparison needs matching baskets. Copenhagen’s published full monthly estimates sit above several regional student examples, especially because of rent. A rent-only figure from Aalborg or Odense cannot be placed beside a Copenhagen total and called a saving.
| Place and source | Published figure | What the figure covers |
|---|---|---|
| Copenhagen, University of Copenhagen | EUR 1,280 to EUR 1,800 monthly | Rent, utilities, phone, food, transport, books and leisure |
| Greater Copenhagen, Technical University of Denmark | EUR 1,244 to EUR 1,840 on campus, EUR 1,650 to EUR 2,800 outside | A defined full monthly basket |
| Aarhus, current Indian student example | EUR 1,093 monthly | EUR 696 rent, EUR 267 food and utilities, EUR 128 other |
| Odense, University of Southern Denmark example | DKK 3,800 rent | Rent only in this comparison |
| Sønderborg, University of Southern Denmark example | DKK 2,500 rent | Shared-apartment rent only in this comparison |
| Aalborg, Aalborg University housing office | DKK 3,200 to DKK 4,700 rent | Rent only, last edited March 2024 |
The Odense row contains only DKK 3,800 rent, so food, transport, phone, insurance, books and personal costs still have to be added before it can be compared with Copenhagen. The Aarhus figure is different again because it records one current Indian student’s spending. It is useful evidence of a possible basket, not a published price for every student.
The usable comparison is the programme fee plus one available room, the commute and every missing household cost. A regional room can reduce monthly spending and the deposit tied up at arrival, but only when the programme fits and the housing offer is real.
How much cash can a housing deposit require?
A Copenhagen private rental can require seven rent payments at move-in. That is three months’ deposit, three months’ prepaid rent and the first month’s rent. The University of Copenhagen housing page says DKK 4,000 to DKK 10,000 monthly is common and confirms the three-plus-three practice. At an assumed DKK 6,000 room, the transfer is DKK 42,000, about INR 6.2 lakh.
Only DKK 18,000 of that example is the deposit. Another DKK 18,000 pays the final three months and must not be counted again when annual rent is totalled. The first DKK 6,000 pays month one. Separate spreadsheet rows prevent prepaid rent from being charged twice.
A regional student-housing offer may have a smaller peak. The University of Southern Denmark’s Kolding housing page publishes DKK 2,400 to DKK 3,500 monthly rent and a two-to-three-month deposit. A DKK 3,000 room with a two-month deposit and first rent needs DKK 9,000 at move-in, about INR 1.3 lakh. The signed lease still controls whether prepaid rent or other charges apply.
These timing examples aren’t legal minimums. Life in Denmark says a lease should be in place before any deposit transfer. The lease must also show whether the address permits registration in Denmark’s Civil Registration System (CPR), which is how the student records an official Danish address, and what utilities or move-out deductions apply.
| Cash event | Regional case | Copenhagen case |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition due before permit or travel | DKK 80,738, full University of Southern Denmark first year | DKK 61,675, first IT University of Copenhagen semester |
| Study residence-permit fee | DKK 3,060 | DKK 3,060 |
| Housing transfer | DKK 9,000, including DKK 6,000 deposit | DKK 42,000, including DKK 18,000 deposit and DKK 18,000 prepaid rent |
| Arrival allowance | DKK 4,000 | DKK 4,000 |
| Cash needed by arrival | DKK 96,798 INR 14.3 lakh |
DKK 110,735 INR 16.4 lakh |
Full-year tuition is due upfront in the regional example, while only one semester is due in the Copenhagen example. That payment difference leaves the Copenhagen arrival peak only DKK 13,937, about INR 2.1 lakh, above the regional peak even though its annual spending is much higher. Later rent and second-semester tuition still need funding.
Is Denmark’s proof of funds an extra cost?
No, not as a separate fee. At the 2026 level, SIRI asks for DKK 7,426 for every study month, capped at twelve months, so the maximum is DKK 89,112, about INR 13.2 lakh. The amount proves that self-support is available; it isn’t transferred to SIRI.
The SIRI higher-education page accepts two evidence paths for a fee-paying student. One is a statement no more than 30 days old in the applicant’s name, showing balance and currency, or a granted loan or scholarship. Restricted shares, bonds, investment portfolios and parent-name statements don’t qualify. The other path is the receipt for paid first-semester tuition. The receipt changes the evidence needed, not the money required for rent, food and other living costs.
“If you have already paid tuition for the first semester, this is accepted as documentation showing that you have sufficient funds.”
The university’s invoice schedule and SIRI’s evidence rule are separate. Paying the full year upfront in the regional example doesn’t raise the legal evidence amount, while a first-semester receipt can still satisfy the published fee-paying-student route.
Bank, granted loan or scholarship: DKK 7,426 × study months, up to DKK 89,112
or
Receipt for paid first-semester tuition when the applicant is charged tuition for the programme
The permit application itself currently costs DKK 3,060, about INR 45,000. That fee is consumed. The live Danish mission and authorised application-centre pages supply any separate India service charge when the biometrics appointment is booked.
When do Danish universities ask for tuition?
Often before the residence process can move. ST1 is the shared study residence-permit application completed by the university and the student. Some universities begin their part only after the required tuition reaches their account, and the difference between paying a semester and a full year can exceed INR 6 lakh in the same month.
- University of Southern Denmark: students starting from September 2026 pay the whole first year in advance. The university cannot initiate the residence process until payment is registered, and a bank transfer can take up to 21 days. See the payment terms.
- IT University of Copenhagen: tuition is paid twice yearly, with first-semester payment due in June for a 2026 master’s entrant. See the non-EU fee page.
- Copenhagen Business School: a master’s applicant needing a student residence permit pays the first semester by 1 June. See the master’s admission page.
- Technical University of Denmark: new autumn students pay by 1 May. Split payment isn’t allowed, and the university warns that its current EUR 7,500 semester fee is expected to change. See the payment terms.
- Aalborg University: a new master’s student receives the first-semester request after admission and normally has about 14 days to pay before the university starts its part of ST1. See the admissions FAQ.
The University of Southern Denmark’s 21-day bank-transfer warning turns a nominal deadline into an earlier family funding date. Aalborg’s roughly 14-day payment window creates a different pressure after admission. A cash calendar therefore uses the university’s receipt date, not the day the family asks its bank to send the money.
Four dates belong on separate budget lines. They are offer acceptance, tuition payment, ST1 submission and housing payment. The Denmark student residence-permit guide holds the document and biometrics sequence without hiding the money calendar.
Is education in Denmark free for international students?
Normally no for a newly arriving Indian citizen whose residence basis is study. Tuition-free study applies to students from the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland, plus people who meet specific Danish residence exemptions. The phrase public university doesn’t change the fee rule.
A scholarship can change the invoice, but it should not change the base budget before an award arrives. The national scholarship page says universities receive a limited number of Danish government scholarships for highly qualified non-EU full-degree students. A university may award a full or partial tuition waiver, a living grant or both. The Denmark scholarship guide compares the university-level rules.
SU, Denmark’s state education support, is also unavailable on the ordinary new-student assumption. The official SU guidance says a third-country citizen resident only as a student must not receive public maintenance support including SU. Equal status is a separate official eligibility decision available through specific legal categories; an ordinary new Indian study permit doesn’t create it. SIRI also bars claims for public benefits such as SU or housing benefits under the study permit.
Can part-time work pay the cost of studying in Denmark?
It can help with later monthly expenses, but a safe pre-arrival plan gives it zero because a job isn’t guaranteed and tuition, the permit fee and housing cash may be due months earlier.
For a state-approved higher-education programme, the current SIRI rule allows 90 work hours a month from September to May and full-time work in June, July and August. Students in certain non-state-approved programmes who applied on or after 2 May 2025 do not receive the same right. Once a contract and net pay are known, actual earnings can reduce later family transfers.
How do you build your own Denmark study budget?
- Copy the exact tuition invoice. Record its currency, whether it covers a semester or year, its due date, refund conditions and remittance charges.
- Choose a monthly basket. Use a full official city estimate where available. If only rent is published, add food, transport, phone, insurance, books and personal costs separately.
- Read the lease as a cash schedule. Separate deposit, prepaid rent, first rent, utilities and furnishing. Do not count prepaid rent twice.
- Choose the permit-evidence route. Record either the applicant-name liquid funds, granted loan or scholarship, or the paid-tuition evidence that SIRI accepts for fee-paying students.
- Add transaction costs. Include the DKK 3,060 SIRI fee, university application fee where applicable, bank spread, remittance charge, flight, initial insurance and room setup.
- Stress-test the timing. Identify the highest cumulative cash outflow before the first realistic work income. Add a buffer for exchange-rate movement and a delayed housing refund.
The family sheet ends with three totals. They are annual consumption, peak pre-arrival cash and liquid funds evidenced for SIRI. Prepaid rent appears in the arrival schedule and inside annual rent, so its label must prevent a second charge. The Denmark university guide can supply the programme and city shortlist before this budget decides which choices remain affordable.
- The two first-year examples run from INR 27.9 lakh regionally to INR 36.2 lakh to INR 43.1 lakh in Copenhagen.
- The exact programme invoice overrides Denmark’s DKK 45,000 to DKK 120,000 national reference range.
- Full-year regional tuition and one-semester Copenhagen tuition make the two arrival peaks much closer than their annual totals.
- Paid first-semester tuition can satisfy SIRI’s self-support evidence rule without turning DKK 89,112 into another fee.
- A seven-rent Copenhagen move-in request can include deposit, prepaid rent and first rent, which have different budget treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is university in Denmark free for Indian students?
Normally no. A new arrival from India using a study residence permit should budget as a fee-paying student. Tuition-free study applies to European Union, European Economic Area and Swiss students, plus specific residence-status exemptions. A confirmed scholarship may reduce or remove tuition, but it should not be assumed before award.
What is the average tuition fee in Denmark for international students?
The national guide gives DKK 45,000 to DKK 120,000 a year as a reference range. Exact fees vary by programme. This page shows examples from DKK 55,600 yearly at Aalborg University to about DKK 129,330 for several University of Southern Denmark Science and Engineering programmes.
How much money does an Indian student need for the first year?
This page’s transparent regional model totals DKK 189,198, about INR 27.9 lakh. The Copenhagen calculation comes to INR 36.2 lakh to INR 43.1 lakh, or DKK 245,236 to DKK 291,884. The housing deposit belongs in peak cash, and every assumption must give way to the actual offer and lease.
How much proof of funds is required for Denmark in 2026?
Denmark’s immigration authority, SIRI, sets the 2026 amount at DKK 7,426 per study month, capped at twelve months or DKK 89,112. It accepts applicant-name liquid funds, a granted loan or scholarship. For a fee-paying student, paid first-semester tuition can serve as sufficient-funds documentation.
Is the DKK 89,112 proof-of-funds amount spent?
No. It is evidence that self-support is available, not a fee transferred to Denmark’s immigration authority, SIRI. Actual living costs draw on available money over time. If first-semester tuition has already been paid, a fee-paying student does not need additional self-support documentation.
How much is a student-room deposit in Denmark?
It depends on the lease. Life in Denmark says one month’s deposit is normal for a room and three months for a flat. The University of Copenhagen says rentals commonly add three months’ prepaid rent. A signed lease should show deposit, prepaid rent, first rent and utilities separately.
Can a part-time job cover living costs in Denmark?
It may offset later expenses, but it should not fund the arrival plan. The current state-approved-programme work right is 90 hours a month from September to May and full-time in summer. It does not guarantee a job, hours or net income, and the main pre-arrival payments come first.
