A university of applied sciences in Finland is a recognised higher-education institution with a professional, work-linked mission. The English abbreviation UAS and the Finnish abbreviation AMK can refer to this same sector. A programme title may also contain Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Health Care or another field-specific award. Should you choose a university or a UAS?
A UAS usually fits a student seeking professional projects and compulsory practical training. A university usually fits a student seeking theory-led study and an academic research path. Riya wants an engineering bachelor’s with company projects, so a UAS curriculum may fit her if its modules and placement field match the work she wants. Kabir wants a theory-heavy route into economics research, so a university bachelor’s may give him a more direct subject foundation.

The European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, or ECTS, measures study workload. It doesn’t make the two sectors identical. The Finnish qualifications framework explains that qualifications at the same level can emphasise different learning outcomes. Two level 6 degrees can therefore have different theory, practice and progression.
Every UAS bachelor’s includes practical training. Finland’s Government Decree on universities of applied sciences sets a minimum of 30 ECTS. LAB’s 2026 applicant guide interprets 30 ECTS as about 20 weeks in its programmes, though health programmes can contain more clinical training.
What degrees can you earn at a UAS?
You can earn a professional bachelor’s degree with core and professional studies, optional study, practical training and a thesis. The programme scope determines its normal duration.
You can also earn a professional master’s degree, often through blended or online delivery while remaining employed. A UAS master’s is not automatically an MBA. The official degree name and curriculum decide whether it is business, engineering, health, technology or another field.

One information technology degree may emphasise networks, another software engineering, and another business systems. How can an Indian student enter a UAS bachelor’s?
Your Indian Class XII qualification can make you eligible when it gives eligibility for higher education in India. UASinfo accepts a foreign qualification that gives higher-education eligibility in its awarding country. Eligibility lets the application be considered. It does not decide how you are selected.
The distinction is important because common UAS certificate selection covers specified Finnish qualifications plus the International Baccalaureate, European Baccalaureate, Reifeprüfung and Deutsches Internationales Abitur. What changes for Indian English proof in spring 2027?
For Spring 2027 Joint Application I, the UASinfo language page applies when a programme’s Studyinfo criteria point to these common English requirements. An English-medium higher-education degree completed in India can then prove English when the whole degree was taught and assessed in English and the documents establish the language and country of study.
India is not in the corresponding upper-secondary country list. An English-medium Indian Class XII certificate therefore doesn’t create the same country-based exemption. A separate or programme-specific selection method can publish different English criteria. Your Studyinfo programme record controls whether the common UASinfo rule applies. This check is especially important when an overseas institution awarded the degree but the study took place locally in India.
How does the International UAS Exam work?
The International UAS Exam is a remote digital joint entrance examination. You complete it once even when several selected programmes use it. Reasoning and English are common sections. Depending on the field, mathematical skills, advanced mathematics, ethical skills or emotional intelligence can also apply.
Every section required by your programme must be passed, identity and remote monitoring rules apply, and an accepted biometric identity document is needed. Vallu publishes official example questions and score access. The common exam page still showed spring 2026 mechanics on 10 August 2026, so its dates and participating-programme list do not yet answer the 2027 schedule.
- Programme participation. The Studyinfo record must show that the intended programme uses the exam.
- Required sections. Field sections differ, so business and engineering applicants can face different combinations.
- Equipment and identity. The current remote format needs compliant equipment, monitoring and an accepted identity document.
- Pass rule. A high total doesn’t repair a failed compulsory section.

What do you need for a UAS master’s?
A UAS master’s normally requires an applicable higher-education degree and at least two years of relevant work experience gained after that degree. The Universities of Applied Sciences Act sets the two-year rule, while each programme decides which degree and work field are applicable.
If you have just graduated and have no relevant post-degree work, a UAS master’s will normally be too early even when the bachelor’s degree is recognised. Two years in a related professional role can create a realistic route, provided your documents prove dates, duties and relevance. Work completed before the qualifying degree normally doesn’t satisfy the statutory pattern.

Delivery also matters. Metropolia’s Information Technology master’s is a 60 ECTS blended programme with a working-life thesis. Haaga-Helia describes a 90 ECTS master’s structure over about 1.5 years. These formats may suit someone remaining in employment, but online or blended doesn’t mean unscheduled. Live teaching, group work, campus meetings and access to an organisation can still be required. How much does a UAS cost?
National guidance places English bachelor’s and master’s tuition at about EUR 8,000 to EUR 20,000 a year for fee-paying non-EU and non-EEA students. A UAS doesn’t have one national price. The institution, programme, start date and the way a master’s fee is displayed all change the comparison.

These examples are not a cheapest-UAS ranking. Arcada’s figure covers named programmes, while Metropolia’s fee varies by field. Master’s prices need extra care because one UAS may quote an annual fee, LAB may quote a whole-degree price, and Oamk may show a first-year amount plus extra-term charges.
Annual price total = annual fee × chargeable academic years
Additional-term total = first-year fee + additional-term fee × billed extra terms
Oamk publishes EUR 10,000 for the first academic year and EUR 5,000 for each additional term. One billed extra term would therefore make EUR 15,000 in displayed tuition.

Can a UAS degree lead to a university master’s or PhD?
Yes, but neither progression is automatic. A Finnish UAS bachelor’s can establish general eligibility for a university master’s. A UAS master’s can establish eligibility to apply for a university doctorate. The receiving university still assesses the field, prior studies and programme requirements.
For a university master’s, a professionally strong bachelor’s may still lack particular mathematics, research methods or subject credits. Compare those prerequisites with the UAS curriculum before enrolment if academic progression is important.
A UAS master’s is a level 7 qualification and can create legal eligibility to apply for doctoral education at a university. That isn’t a guarantee of admission. The university controls the research-field fit, previous studies, supervision, research plan and any supplementary study.
