For a self-funded Indian student estimating the cost of living in Hungary, these first-year tuition and living-cost scenarios run from 5,714,169 Hungarian forint, about INR 17.26 lakh, to 8,538,353 Hungarian forint, about INR 25.80 lakh. The Hungarian forint, or HUF, is Hungary’s currency. The Magyar Nemzeti Bank, or MNB, is Hungary’s central bank. Arrival reserves range from HUF 2,474,069 to HUF 3,280,403, about INR 7.47 lakh to INR 9.91 lakh, so the first decision is whether a dormitory, shared flat or private flat fits both your yearly budget and move-in cash.

The INR amounts use MNB rates dated 13 August 2026, and they aren’t payment quotes. Each row combines one named programme with official six-city planning inputs, local transport and documented insurance evidence. The figures are scenarios, not university bills, predictions, personalised advice or fixed proof-of-funds minimums. They also include the official EUR 110 overseas residence procedure. The wider study in Hungary decision also includes course fit, admission and residence rules.

How much does the first year in Hungary cost?

An annual planning envelope is the full 12-month sum of the listed tuition and living inputs. An arrival cash reserve is the part held before travel for tuition, initial housing, food, local travel, insurance and the residence procedure. The table lets you compare both figures without treating either as a university invoice.

Annual planning envelope = first-year tuition + 12 shared-flat months + 1,080 inexpensive meals + 60 single tickets + 11 student monthly passes + insurance price or planning allowance + overseas residence procedure

Arrival cash reserve = first-year tuition held + 3 shared-flat months + 90 inexpensive meals + 60 single tickets + insurance price or planning allowance + overseas residence procedure

Housing and meals use each city’s entries in the official calculator, while tuition belongs to the named programme. Transport allows 60 full-price trips before a student pass is assumed. The insurance planning allowance is HUF 120,000 held only because Miskolc and Győr require cover but publish no price. It isn’t a local premium.

City and named programme Annual total (HUF) Annual total (INR) Arrival reserve (HUF) Arrival reserve (INR)
Budapest, ELTE Computer Science BSc 8,538,353 INR 25.80 lakh 3,280,403 INR 9.91 lakh
Debrecen, University of Debrecen Computer Science BSc 7,075,819 INR 21.38 lakh 2,832,519 INR 8.56 lakh
Győr, Széchenyi István University Business Informatics Engineering BSc 5,937,031 INR 17.94 lakh 2,582,831 INR 7.80 lakh
Miskolc, University of Miskolc Computer Science Engineering BSc 6,888,329 INR 20.81 lakh 2,896,379 INR 8.75 lakh
Pécs, University of Pécs Computer Science BSc 5,714,169 INR 17.26 lakh 2,474,069 INR 7.47 lakh
Szeged, University of Szeged Computer Science BSc 6,229,203 INR 18.82 lakh 2,970,403 INR 8.97 lakh

Six-city first-year and arrival totals. INR figures use MNB rates dated 13 August 2026.

Allow HUF 40,019 for the EUR 110 overseas residence procedure at EUR 1 to HUF 363.81. Keep the euro amount in your working budget until payment because the HUF figure changes with the exchange rate. The official euro charge, rather than this converted illustration, controls what you owe.

Pécs shows how the calculation works. Its EUR 5,000 first-year tuition becomes HUF 1,819,050. Housing adds HUF 960,000, 1,080 meals add HUF 2,700,000, transport adds HUF 75,100, insurance adds HUF 120,000 and the residence procedure adds HUF 40,019. The result is HUF 5,714,169.

The Pécs arrival reserve keeps the same tuition, insurance and residence amounts, then uses three shared-flat months at HUF 80,000, 90 meals at HUF 2,500 and 60 tickets at HUF 500. HUF 1,819,050 + HUF 240,000 + HUF 225,000 + HUF 30,000 + HUF 120,000 + HUF 40,019 equals HUF 2,474,069. Flights, application charges, medical costs, furniture, bank fees and emergency money aren’t included.

Annual total and arrival reserve serve different decisions. The annual figure tests whether the full first year is affordable on the stated assumptions. Arrival cash tests whether enough money is available before ordinary monthly spending settles. Pécs has the lowest total in this set, yet its arrival amount still includes the rental deposit allowance and full tuition held.

This calculation covers 12 calendar months rather than only teaching weeks. Housing, food and local travel can continue during semester breaks even when classes pause. A student planning to return to India for part of the year can replace those months with the actual tenancy, travel and food position, but the published comparison keeps one common period across all six cities.

Which housing route changes your budget most?

A shared flat is the most defensible common starting point for all six cities. A dormitory is cheaper in the national figures but needs an actual allocation, while a private flat increases both annual rent and the deposit held before occupation. The annual private-flat premium over a shared flat ranges from HUF 420,000 in Győr to HUF 1,140,000 in Pécs.

The official six-city calculator includes utilities for shared and private flats, which makes the comparison consistent. University accommodation evidence then shows whether a current tariff, allocation condition or advance payment applies.

City Dorm average monthly (HUF) Shared flat monthly (HUF) Private flat monthly (HUF) Private minus shared yearly (HUF) Current availability or payment evidence
Budapest 36,000 140,000 225,000 1,020,000 Corvinus 2026/27 accommodation has limited self-funded places. This does not prove ELTE availability.
Debrecen 18,000 80,000 165,000 1,020,000 International dorms are HUF 40,000 to HUF 49,650. Private rent is separate.
Győr 40,000 95,000 130,000 420,000 The 2026/27 application notice does not publish a self-funded international tariff.
Miskolc 22,000 80,000 120,000 480,000 The provisional charge is EUR 600 per semester, paid before arrival.
Pécs 32,000 80,000 175,000 1,140,000 Named dorms and deposits are published, while places are limited.
Szeged 13,000 80,000 135,000 660,000 Medical faculty housing depends on availability at arrival.

a minimum of 2 months’ rental fee

The arrival reserve uses three shared-flat months as one month of occupation plus a two-month deposit allowance. A signed tenancy may price the deposit differently, and utilities may sit outside the refundable deposit even when the monthly calculator amount includes them.

What do six programmes in Hungary charge?

First-year tuition in these six examples ranges from HUF 1,819,050 to HUF 2,328,384 at the 13 August 2026 MNB rates. The comparison controls one large input, but it isn’t a ranking. Five rows are computing degrees, while Győr is Business Informatics Engineering, and programme lengths and billing currencies differ.

Each published amount remains in its source currency below. The HUF column uses EUR 1 to HUF 363.81 and USD 1 to HUF 315.70, so the conversion date is visible rather than hidden inside a rounded rupee figure.

City Institution and exact programme Length (semesters) Published tuition First-year input (HUF) HUF conversion source and date
Budapest ELTE Computer Science BSc 6 EUR 3,200 per semester 2,328,384 MNB, 13 August 2026
Debrecen University of Debrecen Computer Science BSc 6 USD 7,000 per year 2,209,900 MNB, 13 August 2026
Győr Széchenyi István University Business Informatics Engineering BSc 7 EUR 2,600 per semester 1,891,812 MNB, 13 August 2026
Miskolc University of Miskolc Computer Science Engineering BSc 7 EUR 3,000 per semester 2,182,860 MNB, 13 August 2026
Pécs University of Pécs Computer Science BSc 6 EUR 2,500 per semester 1,819,050 MNB, 13 August 2026
Szeged University of Szeged Computer Science BSc 6 EUR 3,200 per semester 2,328,384 MNB, 13 August 2026

Named tuition inputs for the six-city calculation. HUF conversions use MNB rates dated 13 August 2026.

Billing units affect cash timing as well as the yearly sum. A per-semester fee needs two semesters for the first-year input, while Debrecen already publishes an annual amount. Programme length explains why the table also keeps the semester count. A seven-semester degree may cost more over the full course even when its first-year tuition looks lower.

A student comparing other subjects will need the exact programme fee from the shortlisted Hungarian universities. Medicine has different course lengths, charges and recognition questions, so the Hungary medicine route shouldn’t inherit these computing figures.

What does the food model assume?

The food calculation assumes three purchased inexpensive meals every day. That creates annual inputs from HUF 2,700,000 to HUF 4,320,000, but it isn’t a grocery budget or a claim about typical student behaviour. A student who cooks regularly can replace the number of purchased meals with a personal quantity.

The official city calculator publishes a price for one inexpensive meal, not a monthly food allowance. Ninety meals per month makes the assumption visible and conservative for someone who hasn’t yet planned self-catering.

City Inexpensive meal (HUF) Meals monthly Meals yearly Annual food input (HUF) What changes for you
Budapest 4,000 90 1,080 4,320,000 Your planned purchased-meal count
Debrecen 3,500 90 1,080 3,780,000 Your planned purchased-meal count
Győr 2,500 90 1,080 2,700,000 Your planned purchased-meal count
Miskolc 3,250 90 1,080 3,510,000 Your planned purchased-meal count
Pécs 2,500 90 1,080 2,700,000 Your planned purchased-meal count
Szeged 2,500 90 1,080 2,700,000 Your planned purchased-meal count

Meal quantity has more effect than a small change in the per-meal price. In Pécs, reducing purchased meals from 90 to 30 each month changes the purchased-meal portion from HUF 225,000 to HUF 75,000 monthly before groceries are added. That doesn’t establish the grocery amount, but it shows which part of the calculation a cooking plan replaces.

A personal version can use 30 purchased meals and 60 home-cooked meal portions instead of 90 purchased meals. Grocery prices aren’t supplied by the same official calculator, so the home-cooked portion needs current supermarket receipts or a personal allowance rather than an invented national average.

When can you use student transport prices?

A discounted student pass is safe to use only after the local operator accepts your document. The annual calculation therefore uses 60 ordinary single tickets for initial travel and eleven student monthly passes after that. This prevents a discount from appearing before a Hungarian student card or accepted certificate is available.

National guidance states the broad rule, but each city controls the fare and evidence. The exact document matters as much as the price.

Students with valid student card are entitled to reduced rates.
Study in Hungary public transport guidance

City Single ticket used at arrival (HUF) Student monthly pass (HUF) Accepted document condition Annual transport input (HUF)
Budapest 600 3,450 Hungarian student ID or another accepted BKK document route. An Indian-issued card alone isn’t reliable. 73,950
Debrecen 460 5,300 electronic Valid student ID for full-time or evening study 85,900
Győr 350 2,200 The lower municipal product has extra local conditions and isn’t used here 45,200
Miskolc 350 4,950 An international student identity card is accepted under the current tariff 75,450
Pécs 500 4,100 Semester-valid full-time student card or qualifying institutional certificate 75,100
Szeged 650 5,800 Student ID or official certificate plus personal identification 102,800

Sixty single tickets represent about two one-way journeys daily for the first month. They aren’t an extra annual travel category after a pass begins. The annual transport figure adds those 60 tickets once, then eleven monthly passes. A student who receives accepted documentation sooner can replace some single tickets with the valid pass price.

Budapest changed its foreign-card treatment from 15 June 2026. The BKK eligibility notice retains foreign-card use for citizens of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland who also have a Hungarian address. An Indian-issued student card alone doesn’t meet that route.

How should you budget health insurance?

A university price or documented tuition inclusion is safer than one Hungary-wide insurance estimate. Hungary’s immigration authority is the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing, or OIF. Its student residence factsheet requires access to comprehensive healthcare cover or proof that the student can meet those costs.

Budapest, Pécs and Szeged have priced products, while the cited Debrecen fee schedule includes insurance. Miskolc and Győr use the HUF 120,000 insurance planning allowance defined above until the university supplies a price.

City Amount used (HUF) Evidence type What the source proves What replaces the amount
Budapest 96,000 Priced ELTE product 12-month product document dated 1 September 2023 Current ELTE-approved price and eligibility
Debrecen 0 additional Included in cited tuition schedule Included for the exact 2026/27 schedule Accepted programme’s coverage terms
Győr 120,000 Insurance planning allowance Insurance required, no self-funded premium published University-approved quote
Miskolc 120,000 Insurance planning allowance Insurance required, no premium published University-approved quote
Pécs 120,000 Priced annual product Published annual Studium premium Current product terms
Szeged 98,000 Priced two-semester product HUF 49,000 per semester, possible faculty inclusion Faculty’s inclusion or separate price

The allowance prevents a missing premium from becoming a false zero. It doesn’t identify an insurer or accepted product. A written university-approved product and price replaces HUF 120,000 without changing the other city inputs.

Students with Hungary scholarships or Stipendium Hungaricum benefits may have different health support. A self-funded budget shouldn’t copy a scholarship benefit into its insurance line.

What financial evidence does the residence process require?

OIF publishes no fixed student bank-balance minimum. It asks whether the evidence is sufficient for paid tuition, everyday living costs, which it calls subsistence, accommodation, return or onward travel and healthcare. An application submitted from India also carries the EUR 110 overseas residence and entry-visa procedure, which is HUF 40,019 at the dated MNB rate.

A bank statement, a notarised family-support declaration with evidence of the supporter’s capacity, regular-income evidence or a scholarship certificate can support the application under the student residence factsheet. The factsheet also requires proof that tuition was paid.

Required category What OIF states Safe planning use What the evidence does not prove
Paid tuition Payment evidence required Hold the named charge until its due date Every university takes one year before arrival
Subsistence Resources cover living needs Use personal city spending A fixed legal monthly minimum
Accommodation Resources cover housing Include initial rent and deposit A room allocation
Return or onward travel Resources cover the journey Add a current personal airfare Airfare is in the six-city total
Healthcare Cover or payment capacity required Use university price, inclusion or allowance One product works at every university
Overseas procedure EUR 110 residence and entry-visa procedure Use EUR 110 from India A fixed proof-of-funds amount

Financial evidence can combine more than one source of money. The OIF page accepts an applicant’s bank statement and also describes family support backed by evidence of the supporter’s ability. A scholarship certificate or regular-income evidence may also form part of the record. None of those examples turns the six-city arrival amount into an automatic approval figure.

subsistence, accommodation, return/onward travel … and healthcare services

The complete Hungary student visa process determines which evidence applies to the individual application. No separate type D visa charge is added to the EUR 110 line here.

Can part-time work reduce your arrival budget?

Do not reduce arrival cash for hoped-for wages. The current OIF rule permits a student holding a residence permit for studies to work up to 30 hours weekly during the study period and full time for no more than 90 days yearly outside it. Permission doesn’t guarantee a vacancy, wage, language fit or start date, so income can supplement costs only after employment begins.

maximum thirty hours weekly

How much cash should you hold before travelling?

The six arrival reserves range from HUF 2,474,069 to HUF 3,280,403, or about INR 7.47 lakh to INR 9.91 lakh at MNB rates dated 13 August 2026. The relevant city amount needs to be available before travel, then each placeholder is replaced by the admission letter, housing contract, the proof accepted by the local transport operator for a student fare and university-approved insurance amount.

Tuition held means money kept available until the university’s actual due date. It doesn’t claim that every university collects a full academic year before arrival. The timing varies in named evidence, which is why the accepted programme’s letter takes priority over a general assumption.

A payment instruction from the relevant Hungarian embassy, consulate or application authority confirms how the residence procedure charge must be paid. Use that instruction rather than assuming the currency or payment channel.

Cost Timing used Amount type Document that replaces the assumption Risk if omitted
First-year tuition held Before travel until due Named programme price Admission letter and fee schedule, including the Debrecen payment rule or Szeged advance-payment rule where relevant Payment may precede enrolment
Three shared-flat months Before occupation One month plus deposit allowance Tenancy and deposit terms Move-in cash exceeds one month’s rent
90 inexpensive meals First month Purchased-meal allowance Personal meal plan Initial food cash runs short
60 single tickets Before discount approval Newcomer travel allowance Accepted student document Discount is initially unavailable
Insurance price or allowance Before residence or enrolment need Price, inclusion or insurance planning allowance University-approved cover Unknown premium appears as zero
EUR 110 residence procedure Overseas application Official national charge Embassy or application-authority payment instruction Procedure cash is missing
Personal arrival costs Before booking and travel Excluded personal amount Flight quote and personal list Other arrival costs remain unfunded

This sequence prevents a later monthly saving from hiding an earlier cash demand. A lower rent can still require rent plus deposit before occupation, and a student fare can still begin only after accepted evidence is issued. Arrival cash can therefore change independently of the annual ranking between two cities.

The exchange-rate spread is the difference between the central-bank reference rate and the rate offered by the bank or card provider. The scenario excludes this exchange-rate spread, application and entrance charges, medical costs, flights, furniture, bank transfer charges, emergency money and discretionary travel. These items belong in a personal arrival list because the official evidence doesn’t supply one comparable six-city amount.

How should you update the Hungary cost model?

The cost calculation needs fresh currency, tuition, housing, transport, insurance and residence inputs before a payment decision. MNB rates dated 13 August 2026 control the current HUF and INR figures. The INR totals are illustrations and exclude the exchange-rate spread, card charges and transfer fees.

Hungary’s statistical office is the Hungarian Central Statistical Office, or KSH. Its July 2026 price table was updated on 7 August 2026 and showed different movement for food, services and the overall index. One headline inflation rate therefore cannot update every city input accurately.

The July 2026 index placed food at 98.9 compared with the previous year, services at 104.7 and the total at 101.2. Those values imply food down 1.1 per cent, services up 4.7 per cent and the total up 1.2 per cent. A rent quote, meal price and transport fare still need their own current sources.

Input Controlling source Source date Recheck action Unsafe shortcut
Currency MNB daily rates 13 August 2026 Recalculate all conversions together Updating INR alone
City housing, meals and tickets National calculator No visible methodology date Record date and inclusions Calling values market tariffs
Tuition Named programme page 13 August 2026 check Replace the matching input Reusing another course fee
Housing and deposit University and tenancy Varies Replace price and payment terms Treating price as allocation
Transport Local operator Current 2026 evidence Update fare and documents Assuming immediate discount
Insurance University product or inclusion Varies Replace insurance planning allowance Using zero for unknown premium
Residence funds and procedure OIF factsheet and fee page March 2026 Update rule and fee Inventing a fixed minimum
Inflation context KSH price table 7 August 2026 Use category context One rate for every cost

No visible methodology date appears on the national calculator, the ELTE insurance document is dated 1 September 2023 and some university charges are cycle-specific. A current quote can replace one input without changing the ownership of the others. A new tuition amount still belongs to the named programme, and a new transport amount still belongs to the local operator.

Key takeaways

  • The six-city figures are dated planning scenarios, not bills or proof-of-funds minimums.
  • A housing route needs both a price and evidence that the room is available on acceptable payment terms.
  • Tuition, insurance and transport figures stay tied to the named university or local operator.
  • Arrival cash is held before travel and doesn’t assume income from a future part-time job.
  • Every current price and HUF-to-INR conversion needs a fresh check before payment.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to study in Hungary for one year?

The six scenarios run from HUF 5,714,169 to HUF 8,538,353, about INR 17.26 lakh to INR 25.80 lakh at the MNB rate dated 13 August 2026. They combine named tuition with official city inputs and aren’t bills or fixed proof-of-funds amounts.

Is Budapest more expensive than other Hungarian student cities?

Budapest is the highest of these six scenarios at HUF 8,538,353, but that isn’t a price for every student. It combines ELTE Computer Science tuition with the national calculator’s Budapest inputs, including HUF 140,000 monthly for a shared flat.

Is a dormitory guaranteed for international students in Hungary?

No, a published dormitory price doesn’t guarantee a place. The University of Pécs says places are limited, while the Szeged medical faculty makes accommodation subject to availability at arrival. A confirmed written university allocation is separate from a listed price.

Does rent in Hungary include utilities?

The national calculator includes utilities in its shared-flat and private-flat inputs, but an actual tenancy can differ. The Pécs housing page, for example, excludes utilities and management fees from its private-rent range. The signed contract controls the final payment in practice.

How much money should I have before arriving in Hungary?

The six arrival reserves range from HUF 2,474,069 to HUF 3,280,403, about INR 7.47 lakh to INR 9.91 lakh at the 13 August 2026 MNB rate. They include tuition held, initial housing, food, transport, insurance and the EUR 110 procedure, but exclude flights and emergency money.

Does Hungary publish a fixed proof-of-funds amount for students?

No fixed student minimum appears on the current OIF residence factsheet. OIF assesses whether the evidence covers paid tuition, subsistence, accommodation, return or onward travel and healthcare. The six-city arrival reserve is therefore a planning amount, not a legal bank-balance threshold.

Can international students work while studying in Hungary?

Yes, a student holding a residence permit for studies may work up to 30 hours weekly during study and full time for no more than 90 days yearly outside the study period under the current OIF rule. Work isn’t guaranteed and doesn’t replace money needed before arrival.

Is health insurance included in Hungarian university tuition?

Inclusion depends on the exact programme. The cited Debrecen 2026/27 fee schedule includes insurance, while ELTE, Pécs and Szeged publish separate product prices. OIF still requires access to comprehensive healthcare cover under its student residence rule, so zero is safe only when inclusion is documented.

Can I use an Indian student card for Budapest transport?

No. An Indian-issued student card alone does not qualify you for the Budapest student pass. From 15 June 2026, the BKK foreign-card rule retains that route for specified European citizens with a Hungarian address. The HUF 3,450 pass still needs accepted eligibility evidence.
