What is the Leipzig Neuroscience and Behavioural Biology MSc?

Leipzig Neuroscience and Behavioural Biology MSc is an English, four-semester, 120 ECTS research degree for biology graduates with broad prior study. Leipzig publishes no ordinary tuition for this consecutive master’s. At the reference rate used here, the full planning budget is INR 28.05 lakh, equivalent to EUR 25,489.20.

The course spans molecular and cellular neuroscience, systems neuroscience, cognition and behavioural biology, then moves into external research practice and a 30 ECTS thesis. This guide covers winter 2027/28. The 2027 opening, future semester fee and live module allocation were not yet separately published.

How much does Leipzig MSc Neuroscience and Behavioural Biology cost?

The two-year planning total is EUR 25,489.20, about INR 28.05 lakh, including living and current recurring charges. That baseline includes published living costs and current charges but doesn’t include travel, deposits or future rate changes. No part-time income is assumed in the total.

Two-year planning totalINR 28.05 lakhEUR 25,489.20Before travel and deposits

Germany’s 2026 finance evidence is EUR 11,904. It remains the student’s money and is already represented within the living-cost plan. Converted at EUR 1 = INR 110.0485, the ECB reference rate on 1 September 2026. Flights, refundable housing deposits, exchange spreads and future fee changes remain outside the total.

“Blocked bank account (“Sperrkonto”) in Germany with sufficient funds to cover the first year of studies”German Missions in India, study visa funding rule

The German Missions in India funding rule supports the blocked-account figure used here. The dated rupee conversion and its European Central Bank reference series are stated directly in the cost note above.

Leipzig’s estimate includes rent, insurance, materials and normal living costs, but a housing deposit of two to three months is extra.

The winter 2026/27 contribution is EUR 332.30. Holding it across four semesters is a transparent assumption, not a promise about future rates.

Can an Indian applicant meet Leipzig Neuroscience entry rules?

A biology or equivalent degree needs 60 ECTS across at least six of 13 areas, plus English B2. The faculty evaluates subject evidence separately from the foreign-degree document review and any competitive selection. A strong overall grade can’t replace missing subject credit.

For non-ECTS degrees, provide the institution’s workload conversion and total degree credits.

Simple scans can start the digital application, but certified copies are required after an offer for enrolment.

Three checks that can reject an Indian file

  1. Breadth matters more than a general biology total

The 60 ECTS must cover six areas drawn from zoology, behavioural ecology, systematics, physiology, microbiology, genetics, neurobiology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, behavioural biology, biological psychology, cell biology and developmental biology.

  2. The grade is only one part of ranking

The grade formula contributes 40 to 100 points. Relevant electives can add 6, a suitable thesis 4, motivation 20 and student representation 2, so no unofficial CGPA promise is defensible.

  3. Pending study must finish by 30 September

A final mark may still be pending, but every degree examination must have been taken by 30 September for October enrolment.

How should an Indian applicant apply for Leipzig Neuroscience?

The route has a uni-assist review followed by faculty selection, with a recurring 31 May winter deadline. Document review and the faculty decision are separate, so a complete formal file doesn’t guarantee academic admission. APS, language and transcript preparation can proceed in parallel.

Submit the foreign degree through uni-assist, include the six-area credit map and ranked portfolio evidence, and keep APS ready for enrolment and visa steps.

What jobs can follow Leipzig Neuroscience and Behavioural Biology?

The official page names research and science-related career fields but no cohort placement rate. The curriculum can create research evidence, but Leipzig doesn’t publish a course-specific placement rate, salary distribution or employer guarantee. The thesis and assessed projects matter most as portfolio evidence.

Industry directionBiotech and pharmaceutical workOfficial programme description

The role categories are official possibilities and the residence period is a legal route. Neither is a measured Leipzig NBB outcome.

The programme’s Max Planck, Medical Faculty and iDiv links create a research environment, not guaranteed supervision or employment.

A coherent elective set, external internship and thesis topic are the strongest programme-controlled evidence a student can build.

Who is Leipzig Neuroscience and Behavioural Biology for?

The strongest fit is a broad biology graduate who can clear the six-area credit rule and wants research. The strongest file connects prior modules to the curriculum; the course isn’t a substitute for missing foundations. Cost alone isn’t a reliable reason to shortlist it.

VerdictYour backgroundWhy
Strong fitBiology graduate with six-area breadthThe transcript can clear the binding 60 ECTS screen.
Strong fitResearch applicant with relevant thesis evidenceThe ranking and second-year structure reward research preparation.
Needs evidencePsychology graduate with biological modulesPossible only if 60 ECTS can be mapped across six listed areas.
Do not shortlistNarrow biotechnology specialistStrong depth may still miss the required area breadth.
Do not shortlistApplicant seeking clinical licensureThis is a research biology degree, not a regulated clinical qualification.

The course works best when five first-year choices form a coherent research direction rather than unrelated breadth.

Do not shortlist solely because standard tuition is zero. Selection, external placement responsibility and two years of living costs remain material.

This isn’t a course where the award title alone settles fit, and it doesn’t turn an assessed project into a job guarantee. You’ll need the published entry evidence and a credible reason for the specific curriculum.

What does the 120 ECTS Leipzig Neuroscience MSc contain?

The published plan totals 120 ECTS and moves from six choices to a compulsory research year. The catalogue defines the academic range, while current availability and prerequisites still shape the actual study plan. The thesis is the main independent research output in the degree.

  • Complete six 10 ECTS modules in year one, including five NBB choices
  • Complete the Internship outside the Institute of Biology
  • Complete the six electives, Theoreticum and laboratory course before the thesis

The one external first-year module can provide useful breadth, but approval and availability still apply.

Semester rotation matters because the published programme choices are divided between winter and summer.

The catalogue deliberately crosses levels of explanation. Molecular Mechanisms of Neuronal Communication and the biochemical tools module address cellular processes; How the Brain Works, Neuroimaging and Brain Mechanisms of Perception and Cognition move to systems and cognition. Behavioural Neurogenetics, primate behavioural ecology, human ecology and culture, diversity of cognition and molecular anthropology extend the analysis to behaviour, evolution and populations. Clinical and Translational Neuroscience adds a route towards human-health questions without making the MSc a clinical qualification. The choice therefore needs an intellectual centre: a molecular, systems, cognitive, evolutionary or translational question can guide the combination, whereas unrelated selections may leave the final profile hard to explain.

Written and oral Academic English for Bioscientists at C1 level support research communication, but they do not replace the C1 evidence required for admission. The internship, Theoreticum and practical laboratory course provide successive opportunities to demonstrate methods and interpret findings before the 30 ECTS thesis. The practical components are course requirements rather than a published employment placement scheme, and specific topics depend on current supervision and laboratory capacity. This degree is strongest for an applicant who can satisfy the six-of-thirteen subject-area requirement and wants to connect biological mechanisms with observable behaviour. It is weaker for someone needing a beginner psychology conversion, professional therapist status or a guaranteed industry role after graduation.

A molecular experiment, neuroimaging study and behavioural field observation generate different evidence and limitations. The flexible catalogue is most useful when the selected methods match the level of explanation claimed in the thesis rather than merely covering the largest number of neuroscience labels.

Should an Indian applicant shortlist Leipzig Neuroscience and Behavioural Biology?

Shortlist it if your transcript proves 60 ECTS across at least six named areas and you want a research-led neuroscience degree, and only then. The deciding issue isn’t the title alone; the transcript, language evidence and intended research direction must align.

The programme offers unusually broad choice across cellular, systems, clinical and behavioural work, plus an extramural internship and research modules. The tradeoff is a selective small-cohort route whose practical value depends on securing external work and turning the thesis into credible research evidence.

Two things are genuinely hard here. A specialised biology degree can fail because the 60 ECTS must span six distinct areas rather than one strong niche. And meeting that screen only enters ranking, so an applicant seeking predictable open admission or a guaranteed placement should not shortlist it.

Key takeaways

Frequently asked questions

Is Leipzig Neuroscience and Behavioural Biology taught in English?

Yes. Leipzig lists the compulsory curriculum in English and requires English B2. German is still useful for daily life, part-time work and some external placements. English-taught status does not remove the need to check the live module timetable or the language expectations of a chosen internship host.

What academic credits are required for Leipzig NBB?

A biology or equivalent degree must show 60 ECTS across at least six of 13 named areas. The list ranges from zoology, physiology and genetics to neurobiology, biological psychology and developmental biology. The requirement tests breadth, so a large total in one specialist field does not automatically qualify.

What is the Leipzig NBB deadline for Indian students?

A foreign university degree uses uni-assist from the beginning of April to 31 May for winter entry. This guide plans around 31 May 2027, subject to the cycle opening. Submit early enough to answer document queries and keep all bachelor examinations on track for completion by 30 September.

Does Leipzig NBB require GRE or GMAT?

No GRE or GMAT requirement is published. Selection instead uses the German-equivalent bachelor grade, relevant electives, a suitable thesis, the motivation letter and student representation after the 60 ECTS breadth rule has been cleared. A commercial aptitude test cannot substitute for missing biology or neuroscience credits.

How much does Leipzig NBB cost?

Leipzig publishes no ordinary tuition for this consecutive master’s. The present two-year plan is EUR 25,489.20, about INR 28.05 lakh. It includes 24 months at the university’s living estimate, four current semester contributions, one UniCard, one uni-assist application and the German study-visa fee.

Does Leipzig publish NBB placement results?

No. The official page names research institutes, consulting, NGOs, government, biotech, pharmaceuticals and doctoral study, but provides no programme cohort placement percentage, salary distribution or employer denominator. Treat those categories as possible directions. The external internship and thesis must become the student’s own evidence for later applications.
