What is the Leipzig University MSc Data Science?

Leipzig University MSc Data Science is a 120 ECTS master’s studied full time over four semesters for graduates with strong mathematics and computer science preparation. The university publishes no ordinary tuition for this consecutive degree. At the reference rate used here, the full planning budget is INR 28.05 lakh, equivalent to EUR 25,489.20.

The course combines scalable data management, statistics, machine learning and application study. This guide covers summer 2027 and the foreign-degree deadline ending 31 December 2026. Future semester contributions and the live module timetable are not yet published, so current official figures are held constant only for planning.

How much does Leipzig MSc Data Science actually cost?

The two-year planning total is EUR 25,489.20, about INR 28.05 lakh, even though ordinary tuition is zero. It combines 24 months of living, four current semester contributions, one UniCard, a first uni-assist application and the national study-visa fee. That baseline includes published living costs and current charges but doesn’t include travel, deposits or future rate changes.

Germany’s 2026 finance evidence is EUR 11,904. It remains the student’s money and is already represented within the living-cost plan. Converted at EUR 1 = INR 110.0485, the ECB reference rate on 1 September 2026. Flights, refundable housing deposits, exchange spreads and future fee changes remain outside the total.

“Blocked bank account (“Sperrkonto”) in Germany with sufficient funds to cover the first year of studies”German Missions in India, study visa funding rule

The German Missions in India funding rule supports the blocked-account figure used here. The dated rupee conversion and its European Central Bank reference series are stated directly in the cost note above.

Leipzig University advises roughly EUR 1,000 a month, including rent, health insurance, study materials and normal living costs. The estimate excludes a housing deposit of two to three months’ rent.

The winter 2026/27 semester contribution is EUR 332.30. Holding that amount across four semesters makes the arithmetic visible but does not predict later contributions.

The application and visa charges are included once. Part-time work should not be used to reduce the planning total before a job exists.

Can an Indian applicant meet Leipzig MSc Data Science entry rules?

A direct Computer Science, Business Information Systems or Data Science bachelor’s can qualify, while another degree faces exact mathematics and computer-science credit tests. The faculty also asks international applicants for German C1 and English B2. The faculty evaluates subject evidence separately from the foreign-degree document review and any competitive selection.

APS certificate (India) (India)Needed for the German visa and university enrolment processStart APS before the admission result
GRE or GMAT (India)No requirement publishedDo not buy either test unless the faculty asks

The faculty asks for evidence covering at least 120 completed bachelor ECTS. Official module descriptions matter wherever a course title does not reveal the assessed content.

Relevant training or internships may support the file, but the published wording does not let them replace the 20 ECTS mathematics block or the 40 ECTS computing block.

Three checks that can reject an Indian file

  1. A related title does not clear the module test

The six equivalents cover modelling and programming, algorithms and data structures, object-oriented practical work and database systems. Broad coding experience without assessable university credit does not satisfy the published academic map.

  2. German C1 is a real admission condition

The broad catalogue says German with some English, while the faculty admissions page explicitly asks international applicants for German C1 and English B2. Use the faculty rule rather than assuming English module titles create an English-only route.

  3. The Indian deadline is not 15 March

The catalogue’s broad domestic date does not govern a foreign-degree applicant. For summer 2027 the faculty publishes 1 November to 31 December through uni-assist.

How should an Indian applicant apply for Leipzig MSc Data Science?

The route has two decisions, a formal uni-assist review and the faculty’s subject assessment, and the summer 2027 deadline is 31 December 2026. Audit credits first, then run language evidence, APS and documents together. Document review and the faculty decision are separate, so a complete formal file doesn’t guarantee academic admission.

Submit the foreign degree through uni-assist, include complete module evidence for the faculty assessment, and keep APS ready for visa and enrolment.

The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by Leipzig University.

Start with the credit map because a paid formal application cannot repair missing probability, programming, algorithms or database content.

The faculty can ask for a CV and supporting experience evidence. Upload only evidence that clarifies academic suitability and keep module descriptions official.

The window opens on 1 November 2026. Submitting early leaves time to fix a document request, though the university makes the academic decision only after the complete file is reviewed.

What jobs can follow Leipzig MSc Data Science?

The programme can build evidence for data engineering, machine learning, analytics and research computing. Leipzig publishes no placement rate. Germany’s graduate residence route gives eligible graduates search time but does not guarantee a role. The curriculum can create research evidence, but Leipzig doesn’t publish a course-specific placement rate, salary distribution or employer guarantee.

MeasureFigureBasis
Programme placementNot publishedNo official cohort rate
German ICT workforce1.61 millionFederal Employment Agency, 2025
Graduate job searchUp to 18 monthsGerman federal residence route

The labour figure is national ICT context and the residence period is a legal route. Neither is a Leipzig Data Science outcome.

Scalable database work, machine-learning electives, applied modules and the thesis can become portfolio evidence. Students still need to choose a coherent path and secure relevant supervision.

Federal data show ICT employment growth alongside fewer reported vacancies. That mixed picture supports careful role and language preparation rather than guaranteed-job language.

Who is Leipzig MSc Data Science for, and who should avoid it?

The strongest fit already has formal probability, algorithms, programming and database credits, can reach German C1, and wants a flexible research-led data route. The weakest fit needs an English-only conversion course. The strongest file connects prior modules to the curriculum; the course isn’t a substitute for missing foundations.

VerdictYour backgroundWhy
Strong fitCS or data graduate with mapped creditsThe transcript can clear the two subject blocks and six equivalents.
Strong fitGerman C1 applicant seeking database and ML depthThe elective structure supports a technical research profile.
Needs evidenceApplicant needing one fixed specialisationActual choices depend on the live timetable and module availability.
Do not shortlistEnglish-only conversion applicantGerman C1 and substantial prior computing credits are required.
Do not shortlistApplicant requiring guaranteed placementNo programme placement rate or salary is published.

A good academic reason links the mandatory database module and chosen data-analysis, statistics and application blocks to a clear thesis direction.

Do not shortlist solely because standard tuition is zero. The living-cost commitment remains two years and the language and credit screens are demanding.

This isn’t a course where the award title alone settles fit, and it doesn’t turn an assessed project into a job guarantee. You’ll need the published entry evidence and a credible reason for the specific curriculum.

What does the 120 ECTS Leipzig MSc Data Science contain?

The published 120 ECTS structure fixes the database foundation, one seminar and the thesis, then distributes the remaining study through elective rules. The live timetable and module language therefore matter. The catalogue defines the academic range, while current availability and prerequisites still shape the actual study plan.

  • The 50 ECTS core-elective block needs at least 10 ECTS each in scalable data management, data analysis and statistics
  • The remaining 20 ECTS inside that block can be distributed among those three areas
  • Elective availability and teaching language must be checked in the current timetable

The official module catalogue publishes options across databases, privacy, statistical learning, deep learning, bioinformatics, digital humanities, software engineering, complex systems and visualisation. The research dossier preserves the complete current list and codes.

The 20 ECTS allocation is part of the 50 ECTS elective block, not an extra requirement. Counting it twice would incorrectly produce a 140 ECTS degree.

Should an Indian applicant shortlist Leipzig MSc Data Science?

Shortlist it if your transcript clears both subject-credit blocks and German C1, and only then. The faculty checks module equivalence rather than accepting a related degree title by itself, so a complete credit map decides whether the low-tuition route is genuinely available.

The academic value is unusual breadth across databases, statistics, machine learning and application fields within a research-led 120 ECTS route. The tradeoff is a flexible elective structure whose actual choices depend on language, timetable and availability rather than a fixed industrial data-science sequence.

Two things are genuinely hard here. A non-standard degree must prove 20 ECTS in mathematics and theoretical computer science plus 40 ECTS in computer science and programming, including six Leipzig-equivalent modules. And the faculty requires German C1 for international applicants, so someone seeking a wholly English data-science degree should not shortlist it.

Key takeaways
  • The full-time Leipzig MSc Data Science lasts four semesters and carries 120 ECTS.
  • A non-standard degree needs at least 20 ECTS in mathematics and theory plus 40 ECTS in computer science and programming.
  • The faculty publishes German C1 and English B2 for international applicants.
  • The summer 2027 foreign-degree deadline is 31 December 2026 through uni-assist.
  • The two-year planning total is EUR 25,489.20, about INR 28.05 lakh, before flights and deposits.
  • Leipzig University publishes no programme placement rate or graduate salary for this course.

Frequently asked questions

Is Leipzig MSc Data Science taught in English?

No. The official catalogue lists German with some English, and the faculty admissions page asks international applicants for German C1 plus English B2. English-titled electives do not create an English-only route. Applicants who cannot provide accepted German evidence should not treat this as an English-taught data-science degree.

What credits are required for Leipzig MSc Data Science?

A direct Computer Science, Business Information Systems or Data Science bachelor’s can qualify. Another degree needs at least 20 ECTS in mathematics and theoretical computer science, including probability, plus 40 ECTS in computer science and programming with six specified Leipzig-module equivalents. The faculty checks official module descriptions.

What is the Leipzig MSc Data Science deadline?

For an applicant with an Indian degree targeting summer 2027, the faculty publishes a uni-assist window from 1 November to 31 December 2026. The broader 15 March date on the catalogue is not the foreign-degree deadline. Winter foreign-degree applications normally run from 6 April to 31 May.

Does Leipzig MSc Data Science require GRE or GMAT?

No GRE or GMAT requirement is published. Admission turns on the prior degree, the 20 ECTS mathematics block, the 40 ECTS computer-science block, six module equivalents and language proof. An aptitude score cannot substitute for missing university credit or the required German C1 and English B2 evidence.

How much does Leipzig MSc Data Science cost?

Ordinary tuition is zero for the consecutive route, but the complete two-year plan is about EUR 25,489.20 or INR 28.05 lakh. That includes 24 months at the university’s EUR 1,000 living estimate, four current semester contributions, the UniCard, one uni-assist application and the visa fee.

Can I work in Germany after Leipzig MSc Data Science?

An eligible German-university graduate can apply for up to 18 months to seek skilled work and may work during that search under the federal rules. This residence route is not a placement guarantee. Leipzig University publishes no Data Science cohort employment rate, salary distribution or guaranteed employer list.
