Universiti Malaya lists RM41,700 for its full-time Master of Data Science, which also carries a 10-credit research project. For an Indian student comparing a master degree in Malaysia, the fee and the word “coursework” don’t describe all the work involved. Malaysia’s 3 broad styles are coursework, mixed mode and research. Coursework admissions focus on previous subjects and grades, while research admissions look much harder at the project and proposal. Your next step is to decide which style suits you, then send your Indian bachelor’s details to admissions.
No official source in the Malaysian Qualifications Register framework or the sampled university rules promises that every three-year Indian bachelor’s degree is accepted for every master’s. Nottingham Malaysia has a one-year course, while UTM’s central guidance allows up to 8 semesters. Your subject, marks, project work and research preparation can change the answer. The MQA register shows the Malaysian accreditation position. India’s UGC or the relevant professional regulator decides how the completed degree can be used in India.
Which master’s study mode suits your goal?
Malaysian programme pages use three different structures. Coursework gives you modules and regular assessment. Mixed mode combines classes with substantial research. A research master’s is built mainly around one supervised project. The best fit depends on whether you prefer scheduled classes, a large dissertation, or mainly independent research.
A coursework label still leaves room for serious project work. Universiti Malaya’s Master of Data Science contains 24 core credits, 8 elective credits and a 10-credit research project. At Nottingham Malaysia, the computer science master’s ends with a 60-credit project after 120 taught credits. Both remain structured taught degrees; a research master’s centres the whole degree on the thesis.
Mixed mode carries much more research than a short final project. The UCSI postgraduate handbook shows three percentage splits between coursework and research: 50:50, 40:60 and 30:70. A course with 60 or 70 per cent research may suit someone considering a PhD later, but the proposed topic must be large enough for a dissertation.
A research master’s begins with the research problem. Monash Malaysia’s MPhil in Information Technology normally expects a relevant four-year bachelor’s with a thesis or project. It may also assess another qualification together with relevant experience. Admission depends on evidence of research ability, a topic that matches the department and an available supervisor.
| What you want from the degree | Mode to examine first | Work you will actually do | Main admission evidence | How predictable time and cost are |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Structured classes plus an applied project | Coursework | Modules, assignments, exams and a project or dissertation | Relevant bachelor’s, grades and any subject prerequisites | Usually the clearest calendar and often a full-programme fee |
| Classes plus substantial preparation for research | Mixed mode | Taught modules plus a large dissertation | Relevant bachelor’s, grades and research readiness | More research uncertainty than coursework, with the ratio varying by course |
| A research career or a PhD later | Research | Independent study centred on a thesis, with supervision | Research project, proposal, topic fit and supervisor capacity | Often charged per semester or year, so an extension can add cost |
| A fast degree with some research experience | Compare coursework and mixed mode | Check the project credits rather than relying on the mode label | Subject match and evidence for the project area | A short calendar can still contain a demanding dissertation |
| The lowest displayed fee, without a research plan | Poor fit for a research degree | Research progress depends on a viable project and sustained thesis work | A credible research profile is still required | Annual or semester fees can continue if completion takes longer |
Mode also changes the questions to settle before accepting an offer. For coursework, ask when the timetable and final project begin. For mixed mode, ask how early the dissertation topic and supervision are confirmed. For research, ask how proposal approval, progress reviews and the final examination affect the normal completion period. The UCSI postgraduate handbook and Monash MPhil route show why the study calendar can’t be inferred from the word “master’s”. Get these answers from the programme or faculty that will manage the degree. A university-wide admissions page may not describe the milestones that determine your actual study sequence.
Will your Indian bachelor’s degree be accepted?
Your Indian bachelor’s may be accepted. Admissions staff compare its awarding institution, subject, honours status, grades, relevant modules, projects, work experience and research preparation with the chosen master’s requirements.
Universiti Malaya gives a general CGPA route for its data science master’s, then sets different minimums for applicants from science and non-science degrees. Nottingham Malaysia asks a computing applicant to show programming work equal to a 20-credit bachelor’s project. At both universities, the subject or project condition can decide the application even when the grade is high enough.
Indian percentages are left as they are because no official source in this programme sample gives one safe conversion for all Indian universities. A direct route meets the stated grade. A conditional route needs extra academic or work evidence. Individual assessment means the university must read your Indian record before giving an answer. The last column tells you which situation applies.
| Programme and route | Entry grade | Extra academic condition | English evidence | Full-time duration | Current tuition and fee basis | How the Indian degree is handled |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UM Master of Data Science, coursework | General route begins at CGPA 3.00. A lower grade needs one extra condition from UM’s list | The required CGPA changes for applicants from science and non-science degrees | IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 60, PTE 59, Cambridge 169 or MUET Band 4 among listed routes | 2 regular semesters plus 1 shorter special semester | RM41,700 full-time tuition, excluding 6 per cent SST | Conditional route. Degree discipline can matter more than the general 3.00 line |
| USM Master of Data Science, coursework | CGPA 2.75 direct. Grades from 2.00 to 2.74 need academic or experience evidence from USM’s list | Relevant computing bachelor’s | IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 60, PTE 59, Cambridge 169, CIEP 109 or MUET Band 4 | 3 to 6 semesters | USD8,800 tuition, with named charges separate and SST excluded | Conditional route. USM decides how the Indian marks convert to these CGPA ranges |
| USM MSc Computer Science, research | Relevant degree at CGPA 3.00 direct, with lower published bands requiring added evidence | Research, academic or professional evidence can support lower bands | IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 60, PTE 59, Cambridge 169, CIEP 109 or MUET Band 4 | 1 to 3 years | USD1,850 per full-time semester, with separate charges | Conditional route. A three-year degree without a substantial project needs individual assessment |
| UTM central master’s bands, all modes | Coursework direct at CGPA 2.50. Mixed mode and research direct at CGPA 2.75 | Lower bands face internal assessment or need five years of related experience | Central 2026 guidance lists IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 60, PTE 59 or Cambridge 169 | 3 to 8 semesters in the central FAQ | Not comparable until a course is selected | Conditional route. UTM, not the applicant, decides how an Indian result fits the scale |
| UKM central postgraduate benchmark, programme varies | Central guidance basically sets CGPA 3.00 out of 4.00 | Faculty and institute rules can differ from the central screen | The faculty or programme sets a score linked to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages | Common brochure range is 2 to 4 semesters full time | Not comparable until a course is selected | The central grade is the first screen. The faculty then makes the course decision |
| Monash Malaysia MPhil in IT, research | Normally a qualification equivalent to Australian honours with a mark of at least 65 | Relevant four-year bachelor’s with thesis or project, or another qualification plus relevant experience | Research admission and university English requirements apply to the assessed profile | 2 years full time | RM54,720 per year for 2026, plus general charges and service tax | Monash must assess a three-year Indian bachelor’s individually. Research evidence is central |
| Nottingham Malaysia MSc Computer Science, coursework | Recognised degree equivalent to a UK lower second-class degree, called a 2:2 | Computing or related discipline plus substantial programming-project evidence | IELTS 6.0 with no element below 5.5, or listed alternatives | 1 year full time | RM58,000 per programme for 2026, plus service tax | Nottingham assesses the transcript, syllabus and programming project against its UK standard |
A BSc or BCA applicant may meet a published grade and still lack the required computing subjects or project. Relevant work experience supports some conditional routes, while an unrelated academic background remains a separate issue. Where the university does not publish an Indian conversion, written assessment from admissions is stronger than a self-converted percentage.
The Malaysia university comparison shows how public universities, Malaysian private universities and foreign branch campuses differ in fees, awards and recognition checks.
Can an English-medium Indian degree replace IELTS?
Sometimes, but an English-medium degree is not a Malaysia-wide IELTS waiver. Scores and exemptions are set course by course, including how recent the evidence must be and whether Malaysian requirements add another condition.
USM’s computing admission rules list IELTS 6.0 and several alternatives. They also say prior English-medium study may qualify for an exemption, yet warn that an English result is required with the application. The page doesn’t say whether medium-of-instruction proof counts as that result. This guide won’t promise the exemption without a written USM decision.
Thresholds can change inside one university. The USM research MA Sustainability lists IELTS 5.0 and TOEFL iBT 40, while the two computing examples list IELTS 6.0 and TOEFL iBT 60. The exact programme page, not a university-wide score remembered from another course, is therefore the relevant source.
Heriot-Watt publishes one of the more detailed Indian evidence routes. Its English language requirements attach conditions to two different records: Class XII English from specified boards and previous English-medium study. Each record can carry its own time limit, and some boards are excluded from the named Class XII route.
| Programme or source | IELTS route | Other possible evidence | What the course still decides |
|---|---|---|---|
| UM Master of Data Science | 6.0 | Several recognised tests are listed | Whether the listed alternative and score remain current for this course |
| USM computing examples | 6.0 | Previous English-medium study may support exemption with proof | Whether the medium-of-instruction proof is enough at application |
| USM MA Sustainability by research | 5.0 | Other listed tests have lower programme-specific thresholds | The research programme’s current evidence list |
| UTM central 2026 guidance | 6.0 | Applicants below the score may take an English preparation programme | Extra time, cost and academic-entry timing |
| Monash Malaysia general coursework table | 6.5 overall, 6.0 in each skill | Named courses may differ. The Malaysian campus may apply a two-year validity limit even where Monash lists three years | The course score and the shorter Malaysian-campus validity limit, where it applies |
| Nottingham Malaysia MSc Computer Science | 6.0 overall, no element below 5.5 | PTE, MUET and TOEFL are listed, with changed TOEFL rules from February 2026 | Test format, date and component conditions |
English evidence may need more than a medium-of-instruction letter. The university may ask for the Class XII board and English mark, the bachelor’s completion date, and a test result that meets the overall and skill scores. MUET is the Malaysian University English Test, while CIEP is the ELS Certified Intensive English Programme. The offer letter should show whether English is cleared or remains an admission condition.
Is a one-year Malaysian master’s recognised in India?
Recognition in India is decided through UGC’s programme-specific equivalence assessment, not from the calendar length by itself. For a non-professional qualification, the current rules examine the entry level, curriculum, assessment, project or thesis, internship and learning outcomes. For duration, they convert different national credit systems into a comparable amount of student work. The regulations call this normalised credit.
One year can still carry a large academic load. Nottingham Malaysia’s MSc Computer Science contains 180 credits, including a 60-credit research project. Southampton Malaysia’s one-year MSc Finance includes a dissertation. UGC looks at those credits, the curriculum and the assessment when it considers equivalence.
The UGC foreign-qualification regulations issued on 4 April 2025 allow the compared workload to vary by up to 10 per cent. A branch campus is a foreign university’s campus in Malaysia, and the UGC asks for approval and accreditation in both Malaysia and the university’s home country. A franchise is different: another provider teaches the course under an arrangement with the awarding institution, and the UGC regulations exclude that qualification from equivalence.
For a one-year programme, the safest record starts before the deposit. It includes the programme specification, credit structure, module descriptions, assessment pattern, dissertation or project details, transcripts, teaching campus, awarding institution and Malaysian accreditation record. Medicine, pharmacy, nursing, law and architecture go to their own Indian authorities because the UGC route here covers non-professional qualifications.
UM’s data science master’s runs for two regular semesters plus one additional university term. Monash Malaysia’s IT MPhil takes two years full time. Rent and daily expenses continue through both calendars, so the full cost of studying and living in Malaysia has to cover the stated period.
How much does a master’s in Malaysia cost?
The six official fee examples use two currencies and three charging methods. Taught courses may quote the whole course, while research courses may charge by semester or year. A research total therefore needs an expected study period before it can be compared with a taught-course total.
The rupee figures below use the Bank Negara Malaysia exchange-rate table for 10 August 2026. INR100 equalled MYR4.2926, which gives a dated estimate of MYR1 to INR23.30. It isn’t the rate a bank or card must offer. The USM fees remain in US dollars because their official pages use that currency.
SST means the 6 per cent service tax charged to international students where the university says it applies. It is separate from the displayed tuition in several examples below. Add it only to the fee items the university marks as taxable, then use the resulting invoice amount for the cash plan. Ask for a current fee schedule or pro forma invoice when the course page doesn’t show the taxable base.
| Programme | Mode | Published tuition | Fee basis | Approx. tuition (INR) | Tax and possible extra cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| UM Master of Data Science | Coursework | RM41,700 | Full-time tuition | INR9.72 lakh | 6 per cent SST excluded |
| USM Master of Data Science | Coursework | USD8,800 | Tuition for the programme | Kept in source currency | Separately named charges and SST excluded |
| USM MSc Computer Science | Research | USD1,850 | Per full-time semester | Kept in source currency | Separate charges and additional semesters can increase the total |
| Monash Master of Applied Engineering | Coursework | RM65,280 | Full course for 2026 | INR15.21 lakh | General charges and service tax additional |
| Monash MPhil | Research | RM54,720 | Per year for 2026 | INR12.75 lakh per year | General charges, service tax and another annual fee if study extends |
| Nottingham MSc Computer Science | Coursework | RM58,000 | Per programme for 2026 | INR13.51 lakh | Service tax additional |
Tuition examples checked on 10 August 2026. MYR figures convert using MYR1 = INR23.30 on that date.
Possible research tuition = fee for one semester or year × semesters or years billed
A student estimating the two-year Monash MPhil from the 2026 annual fee would calculate RM54,720 multiplied by 2, which is RM109,440 before general charges and service tax. At the dated exchange-rate estimate, that is about INR25.50 lakh. It is not a fixed two-year quotation because annual fees and the research enrolment period can change.
Heriot-Watt Malaysia shows where an extended thesis starts costing money. Its 2026 and 2027 tuition page keeps research students registered while they finish writing the thesis. That stage costs RM700 for the first year and RM2,700 for each later year. Reassessment and thesis resubmission can cost extra as well.
Tuition is only one part of the cash needed before study. The official fee pages at Monash Malaysia and USM separate several amounts from tuition. Common additions include the following.
- Application fees and an acceptance deposit.
- Student Pass processing, insurance and medical screening.
- India’s RM750 personal bond, normally returned after completion or withdrawal when Immigration rules have not been breached.
- An accommodation deposit and initial rent.
- Living costs before classes and scholarship payments begin.
How do you check Malaysian and Indian recognition?
Two authorities answer different questions when the degree will later be used in India. Malaysia establishes whether the course is accredited at its teaching location. The Indian authority decides whether the degree can be used for further study, public employment or professional registration in India.
The Malaysian Qualifications Register, or MQR, is the public register of fully accredited Malaysian programmes. Its search starts with the qualification title, followed by the provider, campus location, level, credit value, study mode, accreditation reference and status. In the register, Higher Education Provider (HEP) means the institution offering the programme. “Offshore deliveries” means delivery outside Malaysia. A university name gives too little information.
ONLY ACCREDITED PROGRAMMES offered by the Higher Education Provider (HEP) in Malaysia are listed in the MQR and it DOES NOT INCLUDE the offshore deliveries unless stated otherwise.
Malaysian Qualifications Agency, Search for Qualifications
The teaching location on MQR must be the campus you will attend. If the course does not appear in the full register, MQA directs students to its Provisional Accreditation portal. An entry there means the course is still in an earlier approval stage. When neither search gives a clear match, written clarification from the university and MQA is needed before payment.
| Step | What you examine | What must match | What you retain |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Exact programme offer and web page | Qualification title, mode, intake and teaching campus | Offer, programme specification and dated fee page |
| 2 | Malaysian Qualifications Register | Provider, location, level, credits, accreditation reference and status | Saved register result and reference number |
| 3 | Provisional Accreditation portal when full MQR is absent | Exact programme, provider, validity period and location | Record plus written university clarification |
| 4 | Awarding institution for a branch or collaborative programme | Who awards the qualification and approvals in the institution’s home country | Award and approval evidence |
| 5 | Indian authority for further study, employment or professional registration | The Malaysian programme file against the Indian authority’s current rules | The complete academic and accreditation record described above |
Once the MQR details match, the remaining question is how the qualification will be used in India. A non-professional academic degree starts with the 2025 UGC regulation; a regulated profession goes to its Indian professional regulator. Settling that distinction before a large non-refundable payment matters most for one-year and branch-campus programmes.
How should you build the master’s application sequence?
A taught applicant normally settles whether the Indian degree meets admission and submits all documents before receiving a full offer. A research application has an additional academic review before that offer. The university starts the Student Pass process only after issuing the full offer.
Universiti Malaya distinguishes full, conditional and provisional offers. A full offer has cleared its academic and English conditions and can support enrolment, sponsorship and Student Pass processing. A conditional offer is positive but still carries requirements such as final marks or English evidence. UM’s postgraduate admissions guidance says the conditional version cannot be used for those official purposes until the conditions are met.
Deadlines also differ by study mode. For the October 2026 and 2027 academic session, UM’s coursework and mixed-mode window ran from 9 February to 30 August 2026, while its research window ran from 27 April to 22 November 2026. These are dated examples, not dates for a later intake. Nottingham Malaysia allows up to two months for visa processing alone, after the university has assessed the application and issued the full offer.
A Monash Malaysia MPhil application takes 4 to 8 weeks to process. The Student Pass sequence comes after that assessment. An intended travel date therefore has to allow for both periods.
| Step | What you prepare or decide | What happens next |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Open the current course page and record its intake, deadline and study mode | You know which admission cycle and structure apply |
| 2 | Compare exact entry rules using your transcript, subject modules, project and work evidence | You can identify any gap that the formal application must address |
| 3 | Check the exact programme and location in MQR or the provisional portal | The Malaysian recognition position is recorded |
| 4 | Compare fees that cover the same period, then add tax and compulsory charges | Total cash due before enrolment is known |
| 5 | Complete English evidence, certified academic records, translations and the proposal or project samples where required, then submit | Admissions can assess the complete application |
| 6 | Save the university’s written qualification assessment and admission decision | The accepted route is recorded before payment |
| 7 | Clear every condition and receive the full offer | The university can move to the Student Pass process through Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) |
Use the university’s document list for that intake to assemble the application evidence below.
- Final academic evidence, or the latest results the programme expressly permits.
- Certified copies that meet the university’s certification rules.
- An official translation for every document outside the accepted languages.
- Current English evidence that satisfies the exact programme.
- Identity and application documents listed for an international applicant.
- Any course-specific research or project document shown on the application portal.
What should you know about family, funding and work?
Some master’s students can apply to bring eligible family members, and some can compete for scholarships. Family eligibility does not create income, and scholarship cash exists only where the written award includes it. The Immigration Department says only master’s and PhD Student Pass holders may bring a spouse, eligible children or other listed family members, and those family members cannot work or conduct business.
Student work is tightly limited. Immigration allows approved part-time work for up to 20 hours a week during semester breaks and festive holidays at listed types of premises. Rent, insurance, travel and daily spending should therefore be affordable without local wages, including through any research extension.
The Malaysia scholarship options for international students also depend on route and institution. The official Malaysia International Scholarship (MIS) 2026 guidelines covered full-time master’s and PhD study at a limited list of institutions. Applying for MIS did not apply to the university, and research master’s applicants needed a proposal of at least 1,000 words. The 2026 call is closed, and no official 2027 application dates were found on 10 August 2026.
MIS paid tuition directly to the university. The living benefit was RM1,500 a month, paid as RM6,000 every four months after a progress report. Accommodation, visa-related charges and early living costs can therefore fall due before the first payment. A university tuition reduction provides no living cash unless the award expressly includes a stipend.
Indian citizens are on the Graduate Pass nationality list only until 31 December 2026 unless EMGS publishes an extension on its Graduate Pass page. This immigration permission lets an eligible graduate remain for 12 months, requires a Malaysian sponsor and permits part-time work. It does not give permanent residence or unrestricted full-time work.
MBA applicants face separate work-experience and business-school requirements in the MBA in Malaysia comparison. Use the study in Malaysia guide to compare cities, education options and the complete country route.
- UM Data Science includes a 10-credit research project inside a coursework degree, so project weight belongs in the shortlist.
- At UM and Nottingham Malaysia, subject background or prior project work can decide an application that clears the general grade.
- Research fees quoted per semester or year need both a normal-duration budget and a delayed-completion budget.
- MQR must match the qualification and teaching campus; later Indian use follows UGC or the relevant professional regulator.
- A dependant cannot work, and the student’s approved work is limited to holidays and 20 hours a week.
- Indian citizens remain on the Graduate Pass nationality list only through 31 December 2026 unless EMGS extends it.
Frequently asked questions
What should I send for an Indian degree assessment?
Send the final transcript, degree certificate, grading scale and a syllabus showing the subjects studied. Add a project summary, research work and relevant experience where the course asks for them. If the documents are not in English, follow the university’s certified-translation rule. Keep the written admission assessment with your application records.
Can I study MS in Malaysia after BCA?
Possibly, if the computing course accepts your subjects and programming project. The BCA title does not show how much mathematics, statistics, algorithms or software work sits in the transcript. Send a detailed syllabus and project summary with the marksheet. Admissions can then assess the degree against the course rather than an unofficial percentage conversion.
Do I need IELTS for a master’s in Malaysia?
You may need IELTS or another accepted test. If the course mentions prior English-medium study, send that proof before paying a deposit and ask admissions to identify the accepted exemption in writing. Book a test while waiting when its result date could otherwise delay the full offer and Student Pass sequence.
Which completion date should I use for planning?
Ask the programme to separate the end of teaching, final project or thesis submission, examination and official completion. They may not fall on one date. Use the latest required academic stage for housing and cash planning, then confirm the Student Pass dates shown in the university’s own international-student process.
When should I collect records for UGC equivalence?
Start before enrolment because programme pages and fee documents can change. Save the dated course and accreditation records used for your decision, then request final academic documents when the degree is awarded. This creates a continuous file from the original course offer to the completed qualification instead of reconstructing it years later.
How should I budget for a research extension?
Create a separate contingency rather than treating the normal-duration total as the maximum. Price one extra enrolment period using the university’s current research fee basis, then add rent, insurance and any pass-renewal cost that would continue. Keep this scenario outside the main budget so the assumption remains visible.
When should I add dependant costs to my plan?
Add them before accepting the offer, even if family members will travel later. Ask the university for its current dependant document and fee list, then price family housing, insurance, travel and daily spending for the intended stay. This shows whether a solo first semester or later family arrival is financially safer.
When should I check Graduate Pass eligibility?
Check before choosing the intake, again before enrolment and once more near graduation. EMGS can change the nationality list, qualifying Student Pass conditions and application evidence. Treat the rule that covers your expected graduation date as the relevant one, rather than assuming that today’s permission will remain available throughout the degree.
