What is the MIC MA Arts by Research?

This is not a taught master’s and it is not the PhD shown on the same MIC page. The route uses a supervisor-led master-apprentice model, carries a nominal 180 ECTS and ends with a monograph thesis of no more than 60,000 words. Unpublished deadlines and outcomes remain outside the verified case.

MIC publishes a variable application deadline and no fixed next registration date. The useful starting point is therefore a research question and a willing supervisor, not a generic application form submitted before academic fit has been established. Planning starts from INR 55.36 lakh for the two-year plan. This covers fees and MIC living estimate.

How much does the MIC MA Arts by Research cost?

The two-year planning total is EUR 49,847, approximately INR 55.36 lakh. It combines two years of tuition, two IT levies, one graduation levy and MIC’s current academic-year living estimate twice. Insurance, visa, immigration registration and travel remain extra. It separates verified charges from costs that MIC has not fixed.

INR values use EUR 1 = INR 111.0585, the European Central Bank reference rate dated 28 August 2026. Insurance, visa, registration, travel, deposits and continuation fees are excluded.

MIC explicitly charges full research-master’s tuition for two years. A continuation fee begins in Year 3 or part thereof, so delayed submission can increase the cost beyond this standard-duration calculation.

The living line uses MIC’s EUR 13,920 academic-year estimate twice because the exact page does not publish a separate research-student budget. Actual cost depends on residence and the location expectations agreed with the supervisor.

The institution is separately identified in the Research Organization Registry, and the award level is read against Ireland’s National Framework of Qualifications. INR comparisons use the dated European Central Bank reference rate, not a future remittance promise. For an eligible in-country route, Irish immigration states the finance rule directly:

This isn’t evidence that the published budget will cover every student’s actual spending, doesn’t replace the offer letter and won’t make a current rate a future remittance promise. The visa authority also defines its charge narrowly:

The Embassy of Ireland in India visa service is the India-specific starting point; a visa fee is not an admission deposit. Irish immigration defines the eligible graduate group as:

A remote enrolment from India does not establish those conditions, and the permission is not a job guarantee.

Can an Indian applicant meet the MIC MA Arts by Research requirements?

MIC accepts an appropriate master’s, a 2.1 honours bachelor’s, or a 2.2 honours bachelor’s with a six-month progression review. Research fit is separate and decisive. A proposed supervisor, department approval, proposal, two academic references and full transcripts are required. Admission remains an individual MIC decision based on the complete file.

The Arts page spans fourteen supervision areas, but a department can only admit work it is equipped to supervise. The published staff research profiles are the basis for a specific first email covering the question, method, sources and fit.

MIC’s India baseline does not convert 60% into an Irish class. The Research and Graduate School and the academic department still decide equivalence, preparation and the suitability of the proposal.

Four checks that decide a research application

2. Supervisor support comes before the form

   MIC says the application cannot proceed until a faculty member agrees to supervise and signs. A polished unsupported proposal is not a complete application.

3. The proposal must prove feasibility

   MIC assesses clarity, originality, field knowledge, relevance, focus, method, referencing and style. Explain access to sources, ethics and a workable two-year scope.

4. A 2.2 offer carries an early review

   Admission at 2.2 does not remove the academic risk. MIC requires a progression review after the first six months for this entry route.

5. Alternative experience routes are discretionary

   Professional or prior-learning routes require substantial relevant evidence and can involve the MQ5000 qualifying module. They are not automatic substitutes for an honours degree.

How should you apply for the MIC MA Arts by Research?

The route has three academic handovers before the Research and Graduate School considers it. A supervisor supports the project, the Head of Department reviews it, and the Postgraduate Research Sub-Committee decides the application. MIC publishes a variable deadline rather than one fixed intake date. An old prospectus date is not an open offer.

Let supervisor fit set the calendar. MIC publishes no fixed next deadline, so an unsupported date should not drive a visa or funding plan.

The allowances are preparation estimates, not deadlines or processing times published by Mary Immaculate College. Start dates remain unconfirmed.

The package includes the signed application form, proposal, two academic references, transcripts and proof of the EUR 50 fee. Both reference letters must discuss the proposed topic as well as the applicant’s academic ability.

What can the MIC MA Arts by Research lead to?

The degree proves independent enquiry or originality through a substantial thesis. MIC’s 2025 conferring evidence shows completed work in theology and projective geometry, while regulations permit strong master’s research to be recommended for PhD transfer. No programme employment or progression rate is published. MIC publishes no course-level conversion rate.

The thesis and assistantship can build research experience. They do not establish a typical salary, publication result, doctoral offer or employment probability.

The Departmental Assistantship is separately competitive. An MA awardee can receive a EUR 6,900 annual stipend and fee waiver for two years, subject to renewal, performance and up to 120 hours of annual duties. MIC warns that the waiver may not defray every programme’s full fee.

Career direction depends on the discipline and project. A mathematics thesis, media-production thesis and theology thesis lead to different labour markets, which is why a generic Arts employment percentage would be more misleading than useful.

Who should choose the MIC MA Arts by Research, and who should not?

The strongest fit has a specific question, appropriate methods and a faculty match. The weakest fit wants taught breadth, a fixed timetable, a guaranteed scholarship or a general master’s that postpones specialisation until after enrolment. The decision should rest on the published curriculum, delivery pattern and applicant’s intended use of the qualification.

This route is valuable when the research itself is the product. The applicant should be ready to defend the question, method, sources, ethics and contribution before formal admission.

It is a weak conversion degree. There is no taught foundation across Arts disciplines, so missing subject knowledge cannot be assumed to appear through a general first semester.

What does the MIC MA Arts by Research curriculum contain?

MIC publishes no taught modules for this route because research is the only academic focus. The complete award is a supervisor-led 180 ECTS research thesis, submitted as a monograph, with a 60,000-word maximum and examination by one internal and one independent external examiner. The published credit total controls the final award map.

Should an Indian student shortlist the MIC MA Arts by Research?

Shortlist it if you already have a defensible research question and can secure a matching MIC supervisor, and only then. The application cannot proceed until the proposed supervisor supports and signs the research-degree form. The decision remains conditional on the live intake, complete eligibility and a budget that does not depend on unverified outcomes.

The route offers unusually broad Arts supervision, from languages and history to psychology, media, music, mathematics and theology. That breadth is useful only when the proposed topic aligns with current staff expertise and the department is prepared to own the project.

Three things are genuinely hard here. There are no taught modules to provide breadth, a 2.2 entrant faces a six-month progression review, and neither a start date nor residence pattern is published. The programme is unsuitable if you need classroom structure, a guaranteed funded place or a fixed visa-ready intake calendar.
