Norway does not set one IELTS score for every university. Each programme publishes its own accepted evidence and minimum. An Indian applicant proves English with IELTS Academic, another listed test or previous education when the rule specifically accepts that qualification. The same rule page states the overall band, any component minimum and the result-validity date.
Current published IELTS minimums in this comparison span 5.0 to 7.0. A score of 6.0 can work for one route and fail another. Medium-of-instruction evidence from India works only under a named exemption. UDI, the Norwegian immigration authority, does not add a separate IELTS score after university admission.
Is IELTS required to study in Norway?
Not always. IELTS Academic is one accepted way to prove English, alongside tests such as TOEFL, PTE Academic and Cambridge qualifications. Some institutions also accept specified previous education. English evidence remains necessary even when IELTS itself is not.
The official Study in Norway entry guidance warns that accepted tests and scores vary. A general answer such as “IELTS 6.0 for Norway” is therefore unreliable. The same result can qualify at one university and fall short at another.
Different English tests and scores may vary from institution to institution, and sometimes from study programme to study programme.Study in Norway
What IELTS score do Norway universities require?
Published IELTS minimums in this comparison run from 5.0 to 7.0. The national GSU route starts at 5.0 for one first-cycle English option, while NMBU publishes 7.0 for master’s and PhD admission. GSU is the Higher Education Entrance Qualification used for bachelor admission. Its floor does not lower a university’s stricter English requirement.
For master’s admission, English sits alongside the degree and subject prerequisites explained in the master’s in Norway guide. The table isolates the language rule. Its official scores were checked on 15 August 2026. “Overall” is the average band reported by IELTS, while a component rule applies separately to listening, reading, writing and speaking.
| Institution and route | Overall band | Component rule | What an Indian applicant must notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| HK-dir GSU first-cycle floor | 5.0 | National entrance minimum | An English bachelor can set a higher score |
| NMBU English bachelor | 6.0 | Overall score published | NMBU says its rule is stricter than GSU |
| NMBU English master or PhD | 7.0 | Overall score published | An ordinary Indian degree taught in English is not one of its broad exemptions |
| Nord English bachelor | 5.0 | Overall score | The test must be valid and verifiable |
| Nord English master | 6.5 | Overall score | Nord lists a completed English-taught master’s as alternative evidence |
| UiT English bachelor | 6.0 | Overall score | A course can add another condition |
| UiT English master | 6.5 | Some programmes require 6.5 in every component | Overall 6.5 is insufficient when the chosen master’s also lists the component floor |
| OsloMet international master | 6.0 | At least 6.0 in every component | India is not in its published education-exemption list |
| UiB English master | 6.5 | At least 6.5 in every component | IELTS One Skill Retake is not accepted |
| NHH MSc | 6.5 | Overall score | The provider must deliver the electronic result |
| BI international bachelor | 6.0 | Overall score | Listed previous education can also prove English |
| BI MSc | 6.5 | Overall score | Two years of English-taught higher education can support a formal waiver request |
A student with IELTS 6.0 overall and 6.0 in every component can satisfy OsloMet’s current general master’s English rule. UiB asks for 6.5 in every component, and NMBU asks for 7.0 overall. One result therefore produces three different decisions.
NTNU is absent from the comparison because its public test list is labelled 2025/26. That page displays 6.5 in each IELTS component for international master’s degrees, which shows its recent standard but does not confirm a later intake.
Does an Indian English-medium degree waive IELTS?
Not across Norway. A certificate saying that an Indian BTech, BSc, BCom or BA was taught in English works only when the university’s published exemption accepts that education. Several major universities do not list an ordinary Indian English-medium degree as a general substitute for their test.
NMBU draws a sharp line. A university degree in English language or literature can qualify when it includes the required English-subject study. A degree in another discipline merely taught in English doesn’t meet that exemption. Living or working in an English-speaking environment also doesn’t satisfy its rule.
NTNU’s published international-master exemptions name English-taught education in particular countries and specific English degrees, but India is not in its general degree-country list. UiB and OsloMet also publish country and education exemptions without a broad India entry. At these institutions, most Indian applicants need one of the listed tests unless the admissions office confirms a specific exemption in writing.
Other institutions take a different approach. BI permits a waiver request from graduates with two or more years of higher education taught in English. The applicant still has to submit the waiver form. Nord lists a completed master’s taught in English as one way to meet its bachelor or master English rule, provided the teaching language appears on the education documents or is confirmed by the institution.
| Claim | What the official rule needs | Safe conclusion |
|---|---|---|
| My degree was taught in English | An exemption that accepts the country, study level and teaching language | A medium-of-instruction letter alone is not enough everywhere |
| I studied English as a subject | The stated amount and level of English language or literature study | A single general English course may not equal an English major |
| My university can issue a letter | The published waiver must recognise a medium-of-instruction letter | The letter is not enough where the exemption omits it |
| I qualify for a BI waiver | A completed waiver form and documents showing at least two English-taught higher-education years | Eligibility to request a waiver is not an automatic exemption |
| I have an English-taught master’s | The institution’s rule, such as Nord’s listed alternative evidence | Use it only where that study level is explicitly accepted |
Do component scores matter as well as the overall band?
Yes, whenever the institution publishes a component floor. IELTS reports one overall band and four component bands. A high average does not repair a component below the stated minimum.
Your result, IELTS 7.0 overall and 6.0 in writing
UiB’s current rule, at least 6.5 in every component
The writing band falls short, so this result does not meet UiB’s English-master rule.
Nord publishes IELTS 6.5 overall for its English master’s route. The example result of 7.0 overall with 6.0 in writing clears that general rule, but fails UiB’s 6.5 component floor. A Nord course can still add a condition of its own.
One Skill Retake lets a candidate repeat one component rather than the full test. UiB explicitly rejects it, while OsloMet accepts it. NTNU’s published 2025/26 rule also accepts it. Someone applying to both UiB and OsloMet would need a result format accepted by UiB, which may mean writing the full test again.
Which tests and alternatives can replace IELTS?
TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge English appear across the official pages reviewed, but scores and accepted versions differ. UiB publishes TOEFL 90 and PTE 62 for its English master’s route. OsloMet publishes PTE 62 in every component and accepts TOEFL MyBest scores, while UiB doesn’t accept TOEFL MyBest.
TOEFL introduced a new score scale on 21 January 2026. NHH and OsloMet publish both the old and new numbers. NHH states 90 for tests before that date and 4.5 for tests from that date. These figures belong to different scales, so they should never be averaged or ranked numerically against each other.
Cambridge results can receive different validity treatment. NTNU says its Cambridge tests do not expire while its IELTS, TOEFL and PTE evidence is limited to two years. A Cambridge certificate can therefore remain usable there after an IELTS result from the same date has expired, provided the qualification and grade match NTNU’s list.
Duolingo does not appear as a general degree-admission option on the institution pages reviewed here. OsloMet lists it for some exchange applicants, which does not make it valid for a full master’s. A test accepted for exchange can remain invalid for a full degree at the same university.
How long is an IELTS result valid for Norway admission?
Most institutions compared here require the result to be no older than two years on the application deadline. The deadline, not the course start date, decides whether the score is valid. UiB applies this two-year limit. A result taken on 10 November 2025 would normally be too old for an application deadline after 10 November 2027 under that rule.
UiB asks the applicant to upload an official IELTS result with a legible Test Report Form number for online verification. NHH accepts results issued electronically by the provider. TOEFL commonly needs both an upload and electronic delivery using an institution code.
The Norway admissions process already works to a document deadline. Put the test date and delivery method on the same calendar. UiB’s Test Report Form check and NHH’s electronic delivery are easy to miss when the score report is treated as the whole task.
When do you also need Norwegian?
Norwegian is required for a programme taught in Norwegian, not for an English-taught degree merely because it is located in Norway. Study in Norway directs Norwegian-taught bachelor applicants to the national Samordna opptak route. The bachelor’s in Norway guide separates those programmes from the smaller English-taught selection.
The accepted Norwegian routes include the Norwegian language test at B2 in listening, reading, writing and speaking, along with other education and examination routes published by HK-dir. IELTS doesn’t replace Norwegian. The two tests prove different languages for different admission conditions.
Is IELTS required for a Norway student visa or scholarship?
UDI doesn’t publish a separate IELTS score for the university study permit. Its current checklist requires full-time admission, funds, tuition coverage where applicable, housing, an application fee and other residence conditions. English evidence reaches the permit process indirectly because the university must first issue an admission offer.
After the university issues an offer, the Norway student permit guide moves to funds, tuition and housing. English evidence does not return as a new UDI requirement, whether the offer rested on a test or an accepted education exemption.
Funding and language evidence are separate decisions. The Norway scholarships guide identifies funding routes, while the programme retains its own English rule. A claim about a “scholarship without IELTS” is complete only when it names the alternative English evidence as well as the award terms.
A university IELTS result says nothing about eligibility for a skilled-worker permit or professional registration. Nurses and other regulated professionals can face Norwegian-language and occupation-specific conditions even after meeting a university’s English requirement.
How should you build your English-evidence plan?
A useful English-evidence record gives each course one line. It contains the official rule, accepted test or education route, overall score, component score, deadline and delivery method. The broader study in Norway guide for Indian students can settle the subject and budget questions first, so this record covers courses that remain realistic.
For a test route, the confirmed requirement determines the target and the application date determines the testing window. For an education route, the record holds the exact document named by the institution and any waiver form it requires. A completed line shows what evidence will reach that programme before its deadline.
- Norway has no universal IELTS score for every university or degree.
- Current published IELTS minimums in this comparison range from 5.0 to 7.0.
- An Indian English-medium degree is not a general waiver across Norwegian universities.
- UiB and OsloMet publish component minimums, so the overall band alone can be misleading.
- Test results commonly need to be valid on the application deadline and verifiable by the institution.
- Norwegian-taught degrees require Norwegian evidence as a separate admission condition.
- UDI does not publish a separate IELTS score on its university study-permit checklist.
FAQ
Is IELTS required for Norway universities?
Not for every applicant. IELTS Academic is one accepted form of English evidence. A student without IELTS must present another listed test or education recognised under a published exemption. An Indian medium-of-instruction letter should not be treated as a waiver unless the institution’s rule accepts it.
Can an Indian student study in Norway without IELTS?
Yes, only when the chosen programme accepts another test or a documented exemption. BI allows a waiver request after two or more English-taught higher-education years, while Nord lists a completed English-taught master’s as alternative evidence. Other universities may still require a listed test from an Indian applicant.
What IELTS band is required for a Norway master’s?
There is no single band. Current general examples include 6.0 with 6.0 in every component at OsloMet, 6.5 overall at Nord and NHH, 6.5 in every component at UiB, and 7.0 overall at NMBU. The programme can add a higher requirement.
Is IELTS 6.0 enough for Norway?
It can be enough for some routes, including NMBU’s English bachelor and OsloMet’s general international-master rule when every component is also 6.0. It is not enough for UiB’s English master’s, Nord’s English master’s or NMBU’s English master’s. Compare the result with each programme.
Is IELTS required for a Norway student visa?
UDI does not publish a separate IELTS score on its university study-permit checklist. It requires an admission offer and the other immigration evidence. The university decides how English is proven before issuing that offer. A valid university waiver therefore does not create a new IELTS duty at UDI.
How long is IELTS valid for Norway universities?
Most institutions compared here apply a two-year age limit on the application deadline. A score can expire before the course begins yet still have been valid when submitted, or remain under two years at course start but be too old on the deadline. Follow the exact institution wording.
Do Norway universities accept IELTS One Skill Retake?
Rules differ. OsloMet accepts IELTS One Skill Retake for its international master’s English evidence, while UiB explicitly rejects it. NTNU’s current public 2025/26 test page accepts it, but a later intake needs fresh confirmation. A retake used for OsloMet therefore cannot be assumed to work at UiB.
Does a scholarship waive IELTS in Norway?
No. Funding and admission are separate. Without IELTS, the student still needs another accepted English test or a documented education exemption. The scholarship can also request its own evidence, but it does not cancel the language condition attached to admission.
