An Indian citizen on a Norway course longer than three months normally needs a residence permit for studies, commonly called a student visa. For 2026/27, a full-year applicant must document NOK 170,368 for living costs, about INR 17.20 lakh, plus unpaid tuition. After accepting admission, open the personalised checklist from Norway’s immigration authority, UDI, and arrange the requested documents and funds before booking submission.

Money falls into three groups: living funds and unpaid tuition proved to UDI; UDI and VFS fees; and accessible cash for housing, travel and arrival. VFS Global is the India centre that collects the passport, documents and biometrics, meaning fingerprints and a photograph. An institution deposit account is a university-controlled account that can prove living funds before the student can spend them.

Do Indian students need a visa?

Yes, an Indian citizen studying in Norway for more than three months normally needs a residence permit for studies. The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration, or UDI, decides it. The term student visa is widely used, but the application on UDI’s website is for a study permit.

An entry visa and a study permit are not two applications in this route. After UDI approves the residence permit, the embassy process notifies an Indian applicant who needs an entry visa. The applicant follows that message so the passport receives an entry sticker, the visa label used to travel to Norway. After arrival, the police uses the student’s fingerprints and photograph to order a residence card, which proves the right to live in Norway.

A tourist or Schengen visitor visa doesn’t replace this permit. Admission comes first, through the route explained in the Norway admissions guide. The permit application then proves that the student, course, money and housing satisfy UDI’s conditions.

What must an Indian student prove?

An Indian university or university-college applicant must prove six connected facts: full-time admission, an accredited institution, enough living money, tuition payment or coverage, housing and circumstances that make return after study likely. Accredited means that the institution is officially recognised for UDI’s university route. UDI assesses the return condition from the truthful course purpose, personal circumstances and consistent information across the file; it doesn’t name one separate return certificate. A strong academic profile cannot replace a missing financial or housing document.

The table answers whether the permit file is ready. The Condition column names what UDI checks. Usable evidence gives the document or arrangement that can satisfy it. Unresolved position shows what would leave that condition incomplete. The table contains no numeric units.

Study-permit readiness for an Indian applicantGreen is usable evidence, amber needs the named document, and red blocks the permit file.
Condition Usable evidence Unresolved position
Full-time admission Final admission letter naming the course and study period An application receipt or no final full-time admission letter
Accredited institution The admission letter names an officially recognised university or university college A private provider that has not confirmed it qualifies for UDI’s university route
Living funds Loan, grant, own Norwegian account, institution deposit account, or an accepted combination Money shown only in a location not named by UDI
Tuition Paid invoice, sufficient money for the unpaid amount, or written exemption A pending scholarship or exemption without a decision
Housing Tenancy agreement or the housing evidence accepted for the admission route A plan to search for a room after the application
Return after study Truthful course purpose and personal circumstances stated consistently across the requested documents Contradictory information about the study purpose or future plan

The living-funds row means that a loan, grant, own Norwegian account, institution deposit or accepted combination can work, while money held only in an unnamed location cannot. Match the application against all six rows. Any item that resembles the unresolved column needs the document in the middle column before submission. For a private provider, obtain written confirmation that its course qualifies for UDI’s university route before paying.

The final admission letter is central because it settles the institution, study level, course length and full-time place. A Norway bachelor’s applicant and a Norway master’s applicant may reach that letter through different academic rules, but the permit conditions above apply after admission.

UDI supplies a personalised document checklist after the online application is registered. Documents in a language other than English or Norwegian need an authorised or certified translation. Submit the documents on that UDI list. Don’t assume that generic claims about passport validity, photograph counts or extra travel papers apply when the personalised list doesn’t request them.

You must have enough money to live on during the period you are going to study in Norway.Norwegian Directorate of Immigration

How much money must you show?

A full academic year requires NOK 170,368 in living funds for 2026/27. UDI also publishes NOK 15,488 per month, NOK 77,440 for an autumn semester and NOK 92,928 for a spring semester. These are living-cost figures. Applicable tuition is added separately.

The INR amounts below use NOK 1 equal to INR 10.10. This planning rate is derived from the European Central Bank’s 14 August 2026 reference rates of NOK 10.9325 and INR 110.3818 for EUR 1. A bank’s transfer rate and charges will differ, while UDI’s requirement remains in NOK.

The next table selects the living amount for the admission period. Study period names the length of study. Required living funds gives UDI’s amount in Norwegian kroner, marked NOK. Approximate INR converts it to rupees in lakh at the dated rate. The last column says which course and permit length uses that row.

Study period Required living funds (NOK) Approximate INR When this row applies
One month 15,488 1.56 lakh The monthly unit used by UDI for the covered study period
Autumn semester 77,440 7.82 lakh A permit and course covering the autumn semester only
Spring semester 92,928 9.38 lakh A permit and course covering the spring semester only
Full academic year 170,368 17.20 lakh A normal full-year permit application

UDI living-funds requirement for 2026/27 at NOK 1 equal to INR 10.10 on 14 August 2026

The autumn row means that a student admitted only for that semester documents NOK 77,440 for living costs, not the full-year amount. Select the row that matches the period on the admission letter, then add any unpaid tuition. A full-year student uses NOK 170,368 even if the family expects part-time income later. UDI may count income only when the student already holds a Norwegian part-time job offer and submits it as financial evidence.

UDI amount to document = living funds for the study period + any tuition not already paid or formally exempted

A worked illustration makes the boundary visible. If tuition is assumed at NOK 120,000 and none is paid, the UDI amount to document is NOK 290,368, about INR 29.32 lakh. The NOK 120,000 is an illustration, not a quoted course fee. The exact programme invoice belongs in the final calculation.

The application fee and housing deposit sit outside that proof formula. An adult pays NOK 5,400 online to register the study-permit application, about INR 54,522 at the dated rate. VFS in India charges another EUR 20 service fee, about INR 2,208. A housing deposit, flight, bank charges and first-arrival spending need additional cash.

The calculation table separates permit proof from money paid or kept outside it. Money item names the cost. Amount gives NOK, EUR or approximate INR. Purpose says what it pays for. Part of UDI proof answers whether the item enters the permit-funds total. The NOK 120,000 tuition is an illustration, while the living and application figures are current 2026/27 amounts.

Money item Amount Purpose Part of UDI proof?
Full-year living funds NOK 170,368, about INR 17.20 lakh Food, rent and daily costs during study Yes
Illustrative unpaid tuition NOK 120,000, about INR 12.12 lakh Course fee still to be covered Yes
Adult UDI application fee NOK 5,400, about INR 54,522 Online application registration No
India VFS service fee EUR 20, about INR 2,208 In-person submission service No
Housing and arrival cash Depends on contract and travel plan Room deposit and expenses before account access No

The unpaid-tuition row means that the illustrative NOK 120,000 is added to living funds because it has not yet been paid. In this example, NOK 290,368 is the UDI proof total. Replace NOK 120,000 with the actual programme invoice, total the rows marked Yes for UDI and keep separate cash for the rows marked No. The cost of study in Norway guide supplies current course-fee examples and the larger first-year budget.

Where can the money be held?

UDI accepts a student loan, a grant, the student’s own funds in a Norwegian bank account, money in an institution deposit account, or a combination. It may also count income from an existing Norwegian part-time job offer. UDI’s current India page does not name an ordinary Indian savings account as an accepted location for the student’s own money.

The university and UDI assess finance at different stages. NMBU, for example, can assess a recent applicant bank statement, sponsor guarantee with the sponsor’s statement, or scholarship or loan letter when deciding admission. After an offer, its admitted student follows the institution’s transfer instructions so the money is placed in the account used for the permit confirmation.

The table follows the same money through three stages and contains no currency figures. Stage says when the evidence is used. What the document establishes names the question being answered. Example evidence shows what can answer it. Result needed next gives the document or action required before moving forward.

Stage What the document establishes Example evidence Result needed next
Admission assessment The applicant has a credible way to finance study NMBU can assess a recent applicant statement, sponsor package, loan or scholarship letter An admission decision and institution payment instructions
Study-permit file The living money is in a source or location accepted by UDI Loan, grant, own Norwegian account or institution deposit confirmation Upload or submit the confirmation requested on the UDI checklist
After arrival The student can receive and spend the institution-held balance Norwegian bank account and the institution’s release process Release to the Norwegian account, or a USN cash card requested in advance

The study-permit row means that an admission-stage Indian bank statement is no longer enough by itself. The student now needs a loan, grant, own Norwegian account or institution deposit confirmation that UDI accepts. After admission, follow the university’s transfer instructions and submit the resulting confirmation requested on the UDI checklist.

USN shows why the stages matter. Its institution account can hold living funds and support the permit application, but USN says that deposit cannot pay tuition or a housing deposit. It releases the balance after the student establishes a Norwegian bank account, which its page says can take three to four months. A student can request USN’s optional cash card in advance so that up to NOK 25,000 of the student’s deposited money becomes available after arrival while the bank-account process continues.

This is a USN arrangement, not a Norway-wide promise. NMBU, UiB and other institutions issue their own transfer reference, deadline, confirmation and release terms. The student transfers only after receiving the named institution instructions because the wrong account or reference can delay proof and refund.

Does the permit require housing?

Yes, UDI requires the applicant to have somewhere to live. UiB uses the tenancy agreement for accepted student housing, while NMBU tells admitted applicants to include the housing evidence named in its instructions. Use the exact document identified by the personalised UDI checklist and the admitting institution.

The housing document and the housing payment are separate. A tenancy agreement can prove the address, while the room deposit still needs accessible money. USN explicitly excludes the housing deposit from use of its institution-held living funds. A student transferring exactly NOK 170,368 to that account therefore needs another source for the room deposit and first weeks.

The UDI amount is a minimum permit figure, not a promise that any room and lifestyle will fit it. The Norway cost-of-living guide tests rent and daily expenses without changing the official proof amount.

How do you apply from India?

The India route begins online and ends with an in-person submission. The student registers through the UDI Application Portal, pays the application fee, prints and signs the cover letter, and books a Norway appointment at a VFS Global centre in India. VFS collects the passport, documents and biometrics, then forwards the file through the Royal Norwegian Embassy in New Delhi to UDI.

The process table answers what to do, where to do it and what each step produces. Step gives the order. Action and location names the task and responsible place. Evidence produced names the document or record created. What happens next shows what completing that step unlocks. Its numeric units are the NOK 5,400 UDI fee, the EUR 20 VFS fee and the seven-day arrival period for the police step.

Step Action and location Evidence produced What happens next
1. Admission Accept a full-time place and follow the institution’s payment route Admission letter, tuition record and deposit confirmation where applicable Housing and the permit file can be completed
2. UDI portal Register online and pay NOK 5,400 for an adult applicant Application summary, signed cover letter, payment receipt and personalised checklist The student can assemble the documents and book VFS
3. VFS in India Book through the official locator, attend in person, pay EUR 20 and give biometrics Submitted passport and checklist documents VFS forwards the file through the Embassy to UDI
4. UDI decision Wait for the email or SMS result and upload important new evidence through Upload documents in My Applications Grant or refusal decision After approval, follow the embassy message for the passport entry sticker
5. Norway police Attend within seven days of arrival or at the first available appointment Fingerprints, photograph and residence-card order The card is posted to the named Norwegian address

The VFS row means the student attends in India, pays EUR 20, gives biometrics and hands in the passport and checklist documents for forwarding to UDI. After accepting admission and arranging the institution payments, the next action is to register on UDI, use the personalised checklist and then book VFS. Current centre availability belongs to the official VFS locator linked from Norway in India’s residence-permit page. The embassy publishes info.norwayin@vfshelpline.com and +91 22 67866021 for VFS enquiries in India.

How long does the decision take?

UDI doesn’t give one reliable number of weeks for every future study-permit application. Its processing-time guide changes with the application type, submission date and current queue. The current page was updated on 30 July 2026 and answers autumn 2026 cases. A 2027 or 2028 applicant needs the personalised result current on the filing date.

The practical deadline is earlier than the course start. After admission, the institution’s tuition or living-funds payment date is often the earliest fixed deadline because it must issue the permit confirmation before VFS. An international transfer can also take time to register. The VFS appointment, UDI decision, passport entry sticker, flight and police appointment follow.

UDI sends a receipt and status messages by email or SMS. If an important new document arrives while the case is pending, use UDI’s document-submission link: log in to My Applications, open the submitted case, choose Upload documents, select the document type and submit it. UDI sends an email confirmation. Priority is rare and requires a documented reason. Calling, chatting or emailing does not itself move a case into priority processing.

No current official source reviewed publishes a Norway student-visa success rate for Indian students. A percentage on an agent page can’t predict an individual decision. The useful assessment is whether admission, funds, tuition, housing, identity and purpose are consistently evidenced under UDI’s conditions.

A refusal can normally be appealed within three weeks. UDI requires a written and signed appeal in English or Norwegian that identifies the decision and requested change and includes the case number and DUF number. DUF is the registration number assigned to a residence-permit applicant in UDI’s application system; it appears in UDI case papers. New evidence can be included, and UDI does not charge an appeal fee.

Can a student work in Norway?

Yes, a university study permit normally allows up to 20 hours of work per week during study and full-time work during holidays. Remote work counts as work, so hours for an overseas employer still sit inside the weekly limit while the student is physically in Norway.

The study permit does not allow self-employment or running a business. A new applicant also cannot normally start work, including remote work, before UDI grants the permit. The future possibility of work is not proof of funds. Only income from an existing Norwegian part-time job offer may be submitted as part of the permit’s financial evidence.

The language needed for a job is separate from the permit rule. The same applies to IELTS. UDI’s university study-permit conditions do not publish a national IELTS score. The programme decides its English-language evidence before admission, as explained in the Norway IELTS requirements guide.

What happens after approval?

After UDI approves the permit, the embassy process notifies an Indian applicant who requires an entry visa about placing the entry sticker in the passport. The sticker allows the approved student to travel to Norway; it is not a second study-permit application. After entering Norway, the student reports to the police within seven days or at the first available appointment, gives fingerprints and a photograph, and orders the residence card.

UDI says the card can take up to 20 days by post. The student’s name must appear on the letterbox or the card can be returned. For travel across a border and return to Norway, the student uses the passport together with a valid residence card. Plan travel outside Norway after the card arrives rather than assuming that the approval message alone will be accepted at the border.

Arrival also starts the money-release process for students using an institution deposit account. The institution can require registration and a Norwegian bank account before transferring the balance. A housing deposit and first-arrival expenses therefore need an accessible source rather than an assumption that the full UDI balance can be spent on the first day.

When is the permit renewed?

Renewal timing depends on the submission route. With Norwegian electronic identification, called eID, the application is submitted after the fee is paid, documents are uploaded and the submit button is pressed. UDI says this route should be completed no later than one month before expiry. A timely submission lets the student keep the same residence, study and existing work rights granted by the current permit while UDI decides the renewal.

Without eID, the online registration and fee do not complete submission. The application is submitted at the police appointment. UDI recommends registering and paying two to three months before expiry so the student can obtain that appointment.

Renewal is not only another bank balance. The student must remain full time, retain a course place and show normal academic progress. UDI’s renewal checklist also requests six months of bank statements showing transactions and monthly balances, proof that current tuition is paid or otherwise covered, and the institution’s study-progress and work form.

This means that you cannot be more than one year behind in your studies.Norwegian Directorate of Immigration

The six statements show how the account was funded and used in each of the preceding months. A temporary transfer made only before renewal does not explain the earlier living costs. If the residence card expires while renewal is pending, border control in another country can stop the student and return to Norway can be difficult. Avoid planning foreign travel during that gap.

Frequently asked questions

How much money is required for a Norway student visa?

For 2026/27, UDI requires NOK 170,368 for a full academic year’s living costs, about INR 17.20 lakh at the dated planning rate. Any unpaid tuition must also be covered. The NOK 5,400 adult application fee, VFS service fee and housing deposit are separate cash needs.

Can Indian bank funds prove the living amount?

UDI names a student loan, grant, the student’s own Norwegian bank account, an institution deposit account, or a combination. Its current India page does not name an ordinary Indian savings account as an accepted location for the student’s own money. An institution may still assess Indian statements earlier for admission financing.

Is IELTS required for a Norway student visa?

UDI does not publish a separate national IELTS score for the university study permit. The university decides which English-language evidence is required before issuing admission. A programme may therefore require IELTS, TOEFL or another form of proof even though the permit conditions do not add another score.

How much is the Norway student visa fee from India?

An adult first-time study-permit application costs NOK 5,400, about INR 54,522 at the 14 August 2026 planning rate. VFS in India charges an additional EUR 20 service fee, about INR 2,208. Applicants under 18 pay the lower UDI fee published on the current fees page.

How long does a Norway student visa take?

There is no single reliable number of weeks for every application. UDI’s personalised processing-time guide changes with the case type, filing date and queue. The student should include institution transfer time and the VFS appointment before UDI’s period, then allow for the entry sticker and police appointment.

What is the Norway student visa success rate for Indians?

No current official source reviewed publishes an India-specific success percentage. A commercial-page percentage cannot predict an individual result. The useful test is whether full-time admission, accepted funds, tuition, housing, identity documents and the study purpose are consistently proved under UDI’s personalised checklist and current conditions.

Can students work while studying in Norway?

A university study permit normally allows up to 20 hours of work per week during study and full-time work during holidays. Remote work counts inside the same limit. The permit does not allow self-employment, and a new applicant cannot normally start working before UDI grants the permit.

Can the university deposit pay a housing deposit?

Not automatically. USN explicitly says its institution-held living funds cannot pay tuition or a housing deposit. Other universities set their own release process. A student using an institution account should therefore hold separate accessible money for the room deposit and first-arrival expenses until the Norwegian account is ready.
