Scholarships in Spain for Indian students are not one national list. The useful shortlist separates awards that accept worldwide applicants, Indian trusts that can fund eligible study in Spain, university aid tied to a particular admission and Spanish public awards with residence conditions. The decisive question is whether the applicant meets the current official rules, not whether an old scholarship article names Spain.
For 2027 entry, Erasmus Mundus is the broadest verified international route in this evidence set. Inlaks and the J N Tata Endowment can support eligible Indians under their own conditions, while Esade publishes programme-specific aid. Spain’s general university scholarship is much narrower for a new student holding only a study-stay authorisation.
Which scholarship list should an Indian applicant trust?
A trustworthy scholarship entry needs a current official page, an identifiable provider and rules that establish eligibility. The award must also fit the proposed level and subject. A master’s scholarship cannot fund a bachelor’s place, while an award that excludes medicine or an MBA cannot be stretched to cover those programmes.
Timing needs the same discipline. An official page may describe a currently open call, a closed current cycle or a clearly recurring programme. A closed award can help with planning, but it isn’t money available today. This page states the position shown on official sources available on 15 August 2026.
| Route | Applicant scope | First condition to check |
|---|---|---|
| Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters | Students worldwide | Admission and scholarship rules of the chosen joint master’s |
| Spain general university scholarship | Students meeting the published nationality or residence conditions | A qualifying residence position, not only a study-stay authorisation |
| Inlaks Scholarship | Eligible Indian passport holders resident in India | Course, age, offer and subject exclusions |
| J N Tata loan scholarship | Eligible Indian citizens pursuing specified overseas study | Level, academic record, age and admission timing |
| Esade programme aid | Admitted candidates assessed under Esade rules | Exact programme, merit and financial need |
A scholarship shortlist should follow the university shortlist, not replace it. Use the Spain university search to identify academically suitable offers first, then match each offer with funding that explicitly permits that level, subject and institution.
How does Erasmus Mundus funding work?
Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters are integrated international master’s programmes delivered by a consortium of higher-education institutions. Students from any country may apply directly to the consortium running the chosen programme. The course normally lasts 1 to 2 years and carries 60, 90 or 120 ECTS.
You will study at several universities in Europe and beyond. Full scholarships are available for the best students.
European Commission Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters
Full scholarships may contribute to participation costs and support travel, visa and living expenses. The European Commission’s current funding page states a maximum individual scholarship of EUR 1,400 a month for up to 24 months. The consortium’s official page still controls the actual intake, scholarship availability and application documents.
Most applications are submitted between October and January for programmes beginning in the following academic year. This is a planning pattern published by the Commission, not one universal deadline. The exact joint master’s can set its own opening date, closing date and document requirements.
The programme must also fit the student’s academic goal. Erasmus Mundus funding belongs to a named joint master’s and often requires study across institutions or countries. It is not a portable award that can be attached to any master’s programme in Spain.
Can a new Indian student get Spain’s general scholarship?
A new Indian student holding only a study-stay authorisation cannot qualify for Spain’s 2026-27 general scholarship under the published residence rule. The official eligibility page states that a non-EU student must be under 18 or have held a residence permit by 31 December 2025. It explicitly says that a stay authorisation is not enough.
La autorización de estancia no es suficiente
Spanish Ministry of Education 2026-27 general scholarship
This rule excludes the common assumption that every newly admitted Indian student can apply after receiving a study visa. A study-stay authorisation and a qualifying residence permit are not the same position for this award. The published cut-off date also matters for the specific 2026-27 cycle.
An applicant who meets the residence condition must still satisfy the remaining academic and financial rules in the current call. The residence test is an early filter, not an award guarantee. New applicants should not use this scholarship to fill a funding gap unless their exact status qualifies in writing.
Which Indian awards can support study in Spain?
The Inlaks Scholarship and J N Tata Endowment are two verified India-based routes, but they finance different profiles. Neither is a general entitlement. Each provider assesses the applicant under its own current conditions and competitive process.
Inlaks Scholarship
Inlaks publishes a maximum award of USD 120,000 for its 2026 scholarship. The applicant must be an Indian passport holder resident in India and meet the stated offer, age and academic conditions. The 2026 application is closed, so this is a current recurring programme to monitor rather than an open call on 15 August 2026.
Subject exclusions are material. Inlaks excludes business studies, finance, computer science, most engineering, MBA and management studies, medicine, dentistry and related therapies. A high academic score cannot cure an excluded course. Applicants in permitted fields should still read the next cycle before assuming that 2026 rules will remain unchanged.
J N Tata Endowment
The J N Tata Endowment publishes a merit-based loan scholarship of up to INR 20 lakh for eligible full-time postgraduate, doctoral and postdoctoral study abroad. It carries 2% simple annual interest and requires a guarantor. This is repayable support, not a grant, so the future repayment belongs in the funding calculation.
The 2026 rules require Indian citizenship, an age of no more than 45 years and graduation from a recognised Indian university with at least 60%. Undergraduate study, exchange programmes, short courses and distance or online programmes are excluded. Applicants can apply while awaiting an offer under the published timing rules, but the final process still needs qualifying admission.
| Condition | Inlaks 2026 | J N Tata 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Funding type | Scholarship up to USD 120,000 | Loan scholarship up to INR 20 lakh |
| Applicant basis | Indian passport holder resident in India | Indian citizen meeting academic and age rules |
| Study level | Eligible overseas study under the call | Full-time postgraduate, doctoral or postdoctoral study |
| Major exclusions | Several professional and technical fields, including MBA and medicine | Undergraduate, exchange, short, distance and online study |
| Repayment | Read the current scholarship terms | 2% simple annual interest and a guarantor |
A student considering a PhD in Spain can assess both Indian funding and a Spanish predoctoral contract, but shouldn’t double count awards before reading their combination rules. A contract, scholarship and loan can each impose different duties or disclosure requirements.
What university scholarships are available?
University aid is tied to the exact institution and programme. Esade publishes degree and MSc scholarship ranges based on academic record and financial need. Its full-time MBA page separately describes limited need-based aid.
These percentages are not a promise to every admitted student, and they cannot be applied to another Spanish university. The applicant needs the award decision, covered charge, renewal conditions and payment timing. An award covering part of tuition may leave enrolment deposits and all living costs unpaid.
The programme distinction matters at the same institution. Degree, MSc and Spain MBA applicants should use the page written for their programme. A general university-aid headline can hide different award ranges, selection criteria and available funds.
| Published description | What to obtain | Budget treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmed amount and covered fee | Personal award letter | Deduct only the stated covered charge |
| Percentage range | Applicant’s awarded percentage | Do not assume the maximum |
| Renewable scholarship | Academic and financial renewal rules | Model later years conservatively |
| Scholarships available | No personal result yet | Treat the amount as zero |
Does a scholarship solve the visa budget?
Not necessarily. Spain’s current study-authorisation guidance separates study costs from maintenance resources. Amounts used to pay the cost of study cannot be counted as maintenance funds under the rule described in the ministry guidance. A tuition-only award may therefore leave the living-funds requirement unresolved.
The budget should show tuition, mandatory university charges, living costs, insurance, travel and residence expenses separately. Then place each confirmed scholarship payment against the cost it is allowed to cover. The Spain cost estimate should use the destination city, not a national average presented as a personal budget.
Currency movement and payment timing also matter for Indian families. An award paid after arrival doesn’t necessarily cover a deposit or visa-stage proof. A loan scholarship may solve a cash requirement while creating repayment later. The strongest plan records both the amount and when it becomes accessible.
In what order should you apply?
Build one calendar for admission and a second for funding, then join them through the offer requirement. Erasmus Mundus combines programme and scholarship applications through the consortium. Inlaks needs an eligible offer under its published rules, while J N Tata allows some candidates to apply before a final offer arrives.
- Choose the degree level, subject and academically suitable programmes.
- Remove awards that exclude the applicant’s nationality, residence, course or level.
- Record the official opening, closing and offer-document dates for each route.
- Prepare transcripts, references, essays and financial evidence for the strictest deadline.
- Apply through the provider’s official process and retain submission evidence.
- Build the final visa budget using confirmed awards only.
The practical rule is conservative. A recurring scholarship belongs in the application plan, but only a personal award belongs in the funded budget. An admission letter and an award letter solve different parts of the decision.
- Erasmus Mundus accepts applicants worldwide, but funding belongs to a named joint master’s programme.
- Spain’s general 2026-27 scholarship doesn’t accept a study-stay authorisation alone as the required non-EU residence position.
- Inlaks excludes several popular fields, including MBA, medicine and most engineering.
- J N Tata is a repayable loan scholarship with 2% simple annual interest and a guarantor requirement.
- A tuition scholarship doesn’t automatically satisfy maintenance-funds evidence for Spanish study authorisation.
Frequently asked questions
Can Indian students get scholarships in Spain?
Yes, if they meet the current provider’s rules. Verified routes include Erasmus Mundus joint master’s scholarships, eligible Indian awards such as Inlaks and J N Tata, and institution-specific aid such as Esade scholarships. Spain’s general public award has a residence condition that excludes many newly arriving study-stay holders.
Is Erasmus Mundus available to Indian students?
Yes. The European Commission states that students from all over the world may apply. The applicant applies directly to the consortium running the chosen joint master’s. Scholarship availability, documents and dates are programme-specific, while most applications are submitted between October and January for the following academic year.
How much is an Erasmus Mundus scholarship?
The Commission’s current funding page states a maximum individual scholarship of EUR 1,400 a month for up to 24 months. Full scholarships may also contribute to participation, travel and visa costs. The chosen consortium’s official call determines the actual scholarship, duration, covered costs and personal selection result.
Can an Indian student get Spain’s government scholarship?
The 2026-27 general university scholarship requires a qualifying nationality or residence position. For a non-EU applicant, the official page says a study-stay authorisation alone is insufficient. A new Indian student should therefore check the exact residence condition and must not assume that a student visa establishes eligibility.
Does Inlaks fund an MBA or medicine in Spain?
No under the published 2026 exclusions. Inlaks excludes MBA and management study, medicine, dentistry and related therapies, alongside business, finance, computer science and most engineering. Applicants should read the next official cycle before applying because a recurring award can revise its subjects, dates and other conditions.
Is the J N Tata scholarship a grant?
It is a merit-based loan scholarship, not a non-repayable grant. The published 2026 amount is up to INR 20 lakh with 2% simple annual interest and a guarantor requirement. Eligible study includes full-time postgraduate, doctoral and postdoctoral programmes abroad under the endowment’s other academic, citizenship and age rules.
