A master’s in Spain for Indian students is accessible without prior national homologation in many cases, but the university still checks your degree level, postgraduate access in India, subject background and language. Homologation is Spain’s formal national recognition of a foreign degree. The first decision is whether you need an official Máster Universitario or an institution-specific award because that choice affects later academic use.

Spain has no single IELTS score, admission percentage or application portal for every master’s. National law sets the broad access route and official degree structure. Each programme then sets its academic selection, language evidence, documents, dates and fees within the wider study route in Spain.

What are the two master’s routes in Spain?

The two routes are an official Máster Universitario and a university-specific continuing-education award. Both can carry the word master, but they don’t have the same official status.

Royal Decree 822/2021 organises official university study into Grado, Máster Universitario and Doctorado. ECTS is the European credit measure for course workload. The public RUCT database records Spain’s universities, centres and official titles. Universities can also issue their own continuing-education qualifications, so the course name and university brand alone cannot establish the award type.

“Grado, Máster Universitario y Doctorado”

Spanish Government, Royal Decree 822/2021

Official and institution-specific master’s routesChoose by the qualification effect you need, not by the label alone.
Question Official Máster Universitario Institution-specific award
Where status is checked Exact title in RUCT University’s own award and continuing-education information
National credit structure 60, 90 or 120 ECTS Defined by the institution
Academic progression Can form part of the route to doctoral access, subject to doctoral rules Must not be assumed to give the same access
Best suited to Applicants who need an official university title Applicants whose professional goal fits the specific award
Evidence before payment RUCT record and current programme page Written award name, issuer and intended legal effect

The official QEDU tool helps discover official masters and excludes títulos propios. The RUCT register then confirms the exact official title and awarding university. A recognised university can offer both types, so the institution search is not enough.

Is an Indian bachelor’s degree eligible for a master’s in Spain?

An Indian bachelor’s degree can provide access without prior homologation when the Spanish university verifies the required level and postgraduate access. The university makes an admission assessment, not a general recognition decision.

“sin necesidad de homologación del título”

Spanish Government, Article 18 of Royal Decree 822/2021

For a degree from outside the European Higher Education Area, Article 18 requires the university to verify two things. The qualification must be equivalent in level to the Spanish university degree that gives master’s access, and it must permit postgraduate study in the country where it was issued.

UPC’s academic requirements make the limit clear. Admission through this route does not homologate the earlier degree or recognise it for any other purpose. A regulated profession can still require a separate recognition route.

What the university checks for a degree from outside the European Higher Education Area, or EHEAThese checks establish access to one programme, not general Spanish recognition.
Check Evidence from India Possible outcome
University degree level Degree certificate, transcript and institutional information Accepted as an appropriate level or rejected
Postgraduate access in India Evidence that the award permits master’s study where issued Access condition met or more proof requested
Subject preparation Module names, credits, syllabi and grades Direct fit, bridging study or academic mismatch
Programme selection Academic record, CV and any stated examination Ranked for a place after access is established

Spain has no national rule in the opened evidence that automatically converts every Indian three-year or four-year degree into a Spanish level. This isn’t an automatic equivalence exercise, and the exact university and programme assessment controls the result. A recognised Spanish university shortlist should therefore record each programme’s wording for foreign qualifications.

What requirements can a Spanish master’s programme add?

A programme can add subject, prior-degree, language, examination, CV and bridging-course requirements after the national access test. Meeting the degree-level rule only makes the application eligible for programme selection.

UPC states that selection can consider the academic record, an examination and the CV. National rules permit complementary training with a cap of 20% of the master’s credit load. A programme may instead reject an academic mismatch where its curriculum needs a particular foundation.

UPC’s Barcelona School of Informatics gives a precise example. Its Data Science programme checks for sufficient mathematics and computer-science study in the prior syllabus and does not use complementary training to repair gaps. That means a transcript title alone is less useful than the actual subjects studied.

  • Degree and final certificate, or the programme’s accepted provisional evidence.
  • Complete transcript with subjects, grades and study periods.
  • Course descriptions where the programme checks subject depth.
  • Evidence that the qualification permits postgraduate access in India.
  • Language proof accepted by that programme.
  • CV, motivation material and references where stated.

A subject-fit worksheet makes the comparison visible.

Relevant preparation = required subjects found in transcript ÷ required subjects listed by programme

If a data programme lists five foundation areas and your transcript supports four, your evidence ratio is 4 ÷ 5, or 80%. That is not an admission score. It shows the one missing area that needs a written programme decision before you spend on the application.

How long is a master’s degree in Spain?

An official Máster Universitario contains 60, 90 or 120 ECTS, so programme length commonly spans one to two academic years. The credit load affects tuition, living costs, visa duration and time before you return to full-time work.

The decree requires a final master’s project within the official degree. A 120 ECTS programme carries twice the credit volume of a 60 ECTS programme, though calendar design and summer periods can change the exact elapsed time.

How credit load changes planningThe duration is indicative. The current programme calendar controls the actual dates.
Official study load Common planning period Cost effect Application question
60 ECTS About one academic year One main tuition and living period Can the full curriculum fit your prior preparation?
90 ECTS About one and a half academic years Extra credits and additional living months How are the extra semester and project scheduled?
120 ECTS About two academic years Two-year tuition and longer opportunity cost Does the depth justify the extra time away from work?

The 120 ECTS UPC Data Science degree is one official example. Its current page calls it face-to-face and lists English as the language of instruction. It should be compared with a shorter course on total cost and curriculum, not on annual tuition alone.

Can you study a master’s in Spain in English?

Yes, fully English official masters exist, but each programme sets its own language proof. Spain has no single national IELTS requirement for master’s admission.

UPC’s central master’s FAQ says language requirements are decided by the programme coordinator. Within UPC’s FIB faculty, Artificial Intelligence, Innovation and Research in Informatics, and Data Science require English at B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference language scale. Informatics Engineering requires Spanish or Catalan at the same level.

This variation within one faculty is more useful than a generic country score. The accepted certificate list, medium-of-instruction evidence, validity period and minimum level need to come from the exact programme. IELTS proves English, not Spanish or Catalan.

  1. Read the programme’s language-of-instruction field.
  2. Open the study plan and identify compulsory modules.
  3. Check examination, placement and final-project language.
  4. Match your certificate to the accepted evidence list.

How much does a master’s in Spain cost?

The total depends on credit load, public or private status, applicant fee category, mandatory charges and city. Spain does not have one public master’s fee for all regions.

UPC explains that Catalonia sets its public prices and currently estimates €3,200 for 60 ECTS, €4,600 for 90 ECTS and €6,100 for 120 ECTS for non-EU non-residents. The same page identifies separate administrative charges and possible repeat-enrolment surcharges. These are UPC estimates, not a national range, and exact prices wait for annual approval.

Named UPC public master’s estimatesCurrent estimates for non-EU non-residents, excluding some additional charges.
Official study load Estimated tuition (EUR) Cost still to add
60 ECTS €3,200 Administrative charges, degree issue and living costs
90 ECTS €4,600 Administrative charges, degree issue and living costs
120 ECTS €6,100 Administrative charges, degree issue and living costs

A complete Spain study-cost budget adds tuition and compulsory charges to monthly housing, food, transport, insurance, travel and visa setup for the full course length.

Fee category needs the same attention as the headline amount. UPC says its total depends on programme type, first-time credits, nationality and residence. Repeat enrolment can carry a surcharge, while academic-record handling, learning support and degree-certificate issuance sit outside the basic teaching estimate. A useful offer comparison therefore records the applicant category and every compulsory charge on one dated sheet.

Complete master’s cost = tuition and charges + monthly living cost × course months + travel and visa setup

A 60 ECTS programme with €3,200 tuition and twelve months at €800 reaches €12,800 before travel and setup. A 120 ECTS programme with €6,100 tuition and twenty-four months at the same monthly figure reaches €25,300. The worked figures use one assumed city budget only to show the method.

Which scholarships can fund a master’s in Spain?

Erasmus Mundus and Indian postgraduate funding are credible routes, but eligibility and coverage must be checked against a live call. Admission to a Spanish master’s does not create automatic scholarship eligibility.

The European Commission says worldwide applicants may apply directly to a selected Erasmus Mundus Joint Master. Competitive full scholarships may cover participation costs and contribute to travel, visa and living allowance. Programmes normally carry 60, 90 or 120 ECTS, and most applications are submitted between October and January for the following academic year.

“You will study at several universities in Europe and beyond. Full scholarships are available for the best students.”

European Commission, Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters

The Commission’s organisation page lists an EU scholarship amount of €1,400 monthly for up to 24 months. The amount, consortium, Spanish participation and applicant conditions need a current catalogue and programme-guide check.

The J N Tata Endowment’s 2026 cycle offered a merit-based loan scholarship for full-time overseas postgraduate study, with up to ₹20 lakh at 2% simple annual interest and a guarantor requirement. It is repayable support, and the next cycle may change. Current Spain scholarship eligibility must be checked against the chosen programme and intake.

The Spanish general university scholarship has an important limit. For 2026-27, the Ministry says a non-EU citizen needed the specified residence position, and a study-stay authorisation alone was insufficient. A new Indian student should not budget on that award without live eligibility evidence.

What should an Indian master’s application file contain?

A strong file proves degree level, postgraduate access, subject preparation, language and document authenticity in the format the programme requests. The final list comes from the current programme page.

Application evidence and its purposePrepare only the form and translation route the receiving university requests.
Document Decision it supports Common follow-up
Degree certificate Completion and qualification identity Apostille or provisional completion evidence
Official transcript Academic level, subjects and grades Grading explanation or course descriptions
Postgraduate-access evidence Right to enter master’s study in India Institutional confirmation where requested
Language evidence Accepted programme language level Certificate validity and minimum level
CV and motivation material Programme selection and professional fit Interview or references
Certified translation Usability in the required language Exact translator and document-scope rule

India and Spain use the Hague Apostille Convention. The Spanish Embassy in New Delhi states that an Indian document apostilled by Indian authorities needs no further Spanish attestation or legalisation. When a sworn translation is requested, its guidance says the complete document, including the apostille, should be translated.

Apostille and translation perform separate jobs. The apostille authenticates the public-document chain, while the translation makes the content usable in the required language. A university can also apply a document-language exception for its own process, so an English transcript accepted for admission does not establish the rule for another university or for the visa file.

These document steps should run early enough for the Spain student visa application. The visa file also separates tuition from maintenance evidence, so an admission deposit does not replace the required living-funds proof.

Key takeaways

  • An official Máster Universitario and an institution-specific award do not have the same status.
  • A non-EHEA degree can be assessed for admission without prior national homologation.
  • The admission assessment does not recognise an Indian degree for another purpose.
  • Subject preparation and language requirements are set by the exact programme.
  • Official masters carry 60, 90 or 120 ECTS, which changes tuition and living duration.
  • Scholarships need live call evidence and should never be assumed from admission eligibility.

Frequently asked questions

Can an Indian student do a master’s in Spain?

Yes. A Spanish university can assess an Indian degree from outside the EHEA without prior national homologation. It must verify the degree level and that the qualification permits postgraduate access in India. The programme can then apply its own subject, grade, language and selection requirements.

Is a three-year Indian bachelor’s degree accepted in Spain?

There is no national automatic acceptance rule in the opened official evidence. The university evaluates whether the qualification reaches the required level, permits postgraduate access in India and provides the subject preparation needed by the programme. Get the programme’s written assessment before relying on a three-year degree route.

Do I need IELTS for a master’s in Spain?

Not under one Spain-wide rule. Each programme decides its teaching language, accepted evidence and minimum level. An English-taught programme may require B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference, or CEFR, or another stated proof. A Spanish or Catalan programme can demand evidence in that language. Check the accepted-certificate list.

How long is a master’s in Spain?

An official Máster Universitario has 60, 90 or 120 ECTS. This commonly means about one to two academic years, but the programme calendar sets the real duration. More credits also mean more tuition, living months and time away from full-time work, so compare total course cost.

How much does a public master’s in Spain cost?

There is no single national price because autonomous communities set public fees. UPC currently estimates €3,200 for 60 ECTS, €4,600 for 90 ECTS and €6,100 for 120 ECTS for non-EU non-residents, excluding some charges. Treat these as named UPC examples, not Spain-wide fees.

Can Erasmus Mundus fund study in Spain?

Yes, when the selected joint master’s includes a Spanish institution in that edition and you meet its live conditions. Worldwide applicants may apply, and competitive full scholarships can cover participation costs plus contributions to travel, visa and living. Admission and scholarship ranking remain separate decisions.

Does a master’s in Spain lead to a PhD?

An official Máster Universitario can form part of the academic route to doctoral access, subject to the doctoral programme’s rules. Do not assume an institution-specific master has the same effect. Check the exact title in RUCT and the doctoral school’s entry requirements before choosing the award.

Do Indian documents need an apostille for Spain?

Many receiving procedures require foreign public documents to be apostilled, but the exact list comes from the university and later visa checklist. Spain accepts an Indian Hague apostille without further Spanish legalisation. If a sworn translation is requested, translate the complete document, including the apostille.
