For Indian students planning more than 90 days in Spain, a Spain student visa application begins with the place where they have lived for the past six months. That current residence decides whether New Delhi or Mumbai controls the file, and the two offices can ask for different supporting evidence. An applicant’s next decision is therefore the correct consular district, followed by the evidence required for that district.

As of 15 August 2026, the maintenance benchmark starts at €600 per month for one student, and tuition cannot be counted inside that sum. A stay beyond six months brings a Police Clearance Certificate, or PCC, medical-certificate requirements and a post-arrival foreigner identity card, or TIE. The wider Spain study route for Indian students only becomes workable when admission, finance, insurance and Indian public documents are treated as separate parts of one file.

Which Spanish office handles an Indian student’s visa?

The applicant’s current residence during the previous six months selects the Spanish consular district. The official BLS Spain India national-visa page says that the passport’s place of issue and permanent-address field do not decide jurisdiction. This is the first fact to settle because the competent office’s live checklist controls the operational evidence.

Which consular district applies?Green means the district to use when the applicant has lived there for at least six months.
Current residence for the past six months Competent Spanish office Where the file is submitted
Delhi NCR, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and the other states or Union Territories listed by New Delhi Embassy of Spain in New Delhi BLS VAC with a prior appointment
Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Puducherry, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu Consulate General of Spain in Mumbai BLS VAC with a prior appointment
Residence split between districts or less than six months in the present district The live BLS jurisdiction rule needs to be applied to the actual residence record The appointment should not be chosen from passport address alone

The complete territory lists remain on the New Delhi mission’s jurisdiction page and the Mumbai consular-jurisdiction page. BLS receives the application and returns documents. The Spanish Consular Office can seek more evidence, call an interview and make the decision, so a BLS receipt isn’t a visa approval.

The New Delhi mission puts the filing channel in plain words.

Applications must be submitted at any BLS VAC with prior appointment through the following link.

When does an Indian student need Spain’s long-stay visa?

A student needs the long-stay route when the intended study period exceeds 90 days. The visa application also carries the application for the underlying long-stay study authorisation. A course of 90 days or less sits under short-stay entry rules instead, so the same document checklist should not be copied across both situations.

The Spanish Ministry’s September 2025 study-authorisation sheet sets a minimum filing lead of two months before the programme starts. It recognises fixed enrolment dates and other exceptional reasons where that minimum could not be met. The Ministry’s management criteria also treat two months as a minimum, not a maximum advance limit.

Timing point Official rule What the timing means
Course length More than 90 days The long-stay study visa route applies
Application lead At least two months before study begins The file should be ready before the admission date leaves less than two months
Legal decision period One month from the day after submission Extra evidence or an interview can extend the period
TIE after entry Within one month of entry when authorisation exceeds six months The card step takes place in Spain, not at BLS in India

The one-month decision period is a legal period after a valid submission. It does not include the wait for an appointment, the time needed to obtain apostilles, or a guarantee that the passport will be ready for travel exactly one month later.

Which documents belong in the Spain student visa file?

The file combines proof about identity, the course, money, health and the applicant’s history. The table separates the document’s origin from the stage at which it matters. It also shows where the opened official sources publish a firm India treatment and where the competent district’s current checklist still controls.

Evidence Source document Apostille or translation treatment Stage and receiving body
National visa application and photograph Completed applicant form and recent photograph BLS says handwritten forms are not accepted BLS intake for the competent Consular Office
Passport Current passport with the required validity and blank pages Identity document, not an Indian public-document apostille step BLS intake and consular review
Admission Institution letter stating programme dates and total cost Follow the live district checklist for the exact letter Consular study-authorisation decision
Enrolment payment Receipt for registration, enrolment or tuition demanded by the institution No separate apostille treatment is stated on the current mission web page Consular study-authorisation decision
Maintenance funds Applicant or sponsor financial evidence Original evidence and district-specific sponsor bundle Consular study-authorisation decision
Health insurance Certificate and policy from an insurer authorised to operate in Spain Policy wording must match the current district standard Consular study-authorisation decision
Indian PCC Police Clearance Certificate from the Regional Passport Office MEA apostille, with official Spanish translation where the mission requires it Adult applicant whose stay exceeds six months
Medical certificate Certificate from a legal medical practitioner using the public-health wording MEA apostille, with official Spanish translation where the mission requires it Applicant whose stay exceeds 180 days
Residence in district Recent proof of current residence Evidence must support the six-month jurisdiction test BLS and competent Consular Office
Minor or representative evidence Parental authority, consent or representation documents Foreign public documents may need apostille and official translation BLS intake and consular review
Family relationship evidence Marriage, partnership or birth record as applicable Public-document authentication and translation may apply Student-family application after the student’s visa in India
TIE application EX17 and payment under Form 790, Code 012 No Indian apostille step Police or foreigners office in Spain after entry

The admission evidence must match the actual academic route. A Class XII applicant may still be completing the separate Spanish bachelor’s admission process, while a graduate may hold an offer from a master’s programme in Spain. In both cases, the visa file needs the institution’s admission and payment evidence rather than an informal email that omits dates or cost.

The document matrix is a planning control, not a shorter replacement for a live mission checklist. The current New Delhi page and an older detailed New Delhi PDF do not list the same sponsor bundle. Because the Consular Office can request extra evidence, a file assembled from a generic online list can still be incomplete for its district.

This distinction changes how the file should be checked. Admission and enrolment receipts establish the academic purpose, while maintenance evidence must still show money available for living costs outside tuition. The PCC and medical certificate answer different tests and become relevant because of the intended length of stay. An apostille authenticates an Indian public document, but it doesn’t replace a translation where the competent office requires Spanish. Treating these items as substitutes can leave a visible gap even when the folder contains many pages.

How much financial proof does a Spain student need?

A student currently needs maintenance funds equal to 100% of monthly IPREM for every month covered by the calculation. IPREM is Spain’s public income indicator. The SEPE annual-amount page showed monthly IPREM of €600 and annual IPREM of €7,200 on 15 August 2026.

The Ministry states the student’s base amount directly.

Para su sostenimiento, mensualmente, el 100 % del IPREM, salvo que se acredite debidamente tener abonado de antemano el alojamiento.
Spanish Ministry of Inclusion, Hoja 1

Required maintenance = (€600 × study months) + (€450 × months for the first family member) + (€300 × months for each further family member)

A 12-month example for one student and a spouse is €7,200 for the student plus €5,400 for the first family member, making €12,600. Tuition sits outside this calculation. A family that has already paid the whole accommodation period may receive an adjustment under the official rule, but the sources do not publish one universal deduction method for every Indian consular case.

Person covered Monthly maintenance (EUR) 12-month maintenance (EUR)
Student €600 €7,200
First family member €450 €5,400
Each further family member €300 €3,600

The current New Delhi web page asks for a sponsor letter, PAN, six months of signed and stamped bank statements, and a sponsor passport when available. Its older PDF also names an affidavit of support, three years of income tax returns and six months of payslips. The safe description is that district officers assess the whole source and continuity of funds, not only the closing balance on one day. The separate cost of studying in Spain also includes tuition, deposits and living expenses that do not all count as visa maintenance.

What health insurance meets Spain’s student visa rule?

Qualifying cover comes from a public or private insurer authorised to operate in Spain and provides benefits comparable with Spain’s public health system. The DGSFP insurer-register help page explains how to search an insurer and inspect its official status. A travel policy that merely covers the Schengen Area doesn’t establish either condition.

How an insurance certificate reads against the ruleGreen matches the national baseline. Amber needs district-specific confirmation. Red does not prove the required cover.
Policy evidence How it fits the published rule
Insurer is authorised to operate in Spain and the certificate describes cover comparable with the public system Matches the national baseline
Policy has co-payments, limits or exclusions that conflict with the district checklist The older New Delhi checklist uses stricter no co-payment and no coverage-limit wording
Generic travel cover names the Schengen Area but does not establish Spanish authorisation or comparable benefits Does not prove the two published conditions

The certificate matters as much as the marketing name. It should cover the intended stay and make the relevant benefits readable to the officer. Where a policy relies on a reimbursement limit, deductible or waiting period, the current New Delhi or Mumbai checklist is the controlling operational document.

Which Indian documents need an apostille or Spanish translation?

The Indian PCC and the medical certificate have the clearest visa-specific treatment. For an adult staying more than six months, the PCC comes from the Regional Passport Office, covers the relevant five-year residence history and carries an MEA apostille. The medical certificate for a stay over 180 days also carries an MEA apostille and uses the 2005 International Health Regulations wording.

  1. The Indian issuing authority produces the original public document.
  2. India’s Ministry of External Affairs apostille authenticates the public-document chain for use in Spain.
  3. An official or sworn Spanish translation is prepared where the receiving office requires one, including the apostille where required.
  4. The original, copy and translation set is placed in the district-specific order used at BLS.

The Spanish mission’s India apostille procedure says that an Indian document apostilled by Indian authorities needs no further Spanish authentication or legalisation. The Indian MEA apostille page remains the official route for the Indian procedure.

Apostille and translation solve different problems. Apostille confirms the signature and authority behind a public document. Translation makes its content usable in the language required by the receiver. Mumbai expressly asks for an official or sworn Spanish translation of the PCC and medical certificate, while translation treatment for other evidence depends on the document and office.

What happens after BLS accepts the visa file?

The Spanish Consular Office reviews the file after BLS intake and can require correction, additional evidence or a personal interview. The applicant therefore deals with two institutions in sequence. BLS handles the application-centre interaction, while the Consular Office controls the legal examination and decision.

Step Who acts What can happen next
1 Applicant and BLS VAC The district-specific file is submitted at the appointment
2 Spanish Consular Office The office may request missing or additional material or call an interview
3 Spanish Consular Office The office decides the visa and study-authorisation application
4 BLS Visa Application Centre The centre communicates the procedure for passport and original-document return

The published legal decision period is one month from the day after submission, though requests for an interview or extra evidence can extend it. A refusal is notified in writing. The current mission page also says BLS no longer accepts handwritten forms, which makes the printed form a freshness item to revisit before the appointment.

The sequence also explains why a student should preserve the submission receipt and answer any consular request through the stated channel. The receipt records intake, but it isn’t evidence that the officer accepted the financial, insurance or academic case. If the Consular Office asks for a clearer document, the response belongs to the legal review stage. Passport-return communication comes only after that review has reached an outcome.

What must a student complete after arriving in Spain?

A student whose authorised stay exceeds six months applies personally for the TIE within one month of entry. TIE means Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero, the physical identity card that proves the holder’s legal position. The police procedure uses Form EX17 and payment under Form 790, Code 012.

The National Police student-TIE page defines the card’s purpose.

Documento destinado a identificar al extranjero a los efectos de acreditar su situación legal en España.
Spanish National Police

Term What it is Relevant form What the student should avoid assuming
TIE Physical identity card evidencing legal status EX17 It is not correctly described as an NIE card
NIE Personal foreigner identity number EX15 for a standalone request A separate request may be unnecessary if the number was already assigned

Police listed €16.08 for an initial TIE and €19.30 for a renewal or extension TIE on 15 August 2026. Those fee figures must be refreshed before payment. The opened national sources tie the application to the place of domicile but do not establish one universal padrón document list for every police office, so the page does not present padrón registration as an automatic national checklist item.

Higher-education students may also have work permission under their study authorisation. The exact distinction between the 30-hour study rule and later residence categories sits in the work-after-study rules for Spain, because a job-search residence does not itself permit employment.

Can a student renew the study authorisation in Spain?

Yes, a qualifying student can seek renewal electronically during the two months before expiry or the three months after expiry. A filing after expiry can lead to sanction proceedings. The renewal goes to the foreigners office in the province that issued the initial authorisation.

  • A valid passport or travel document remains part of the renewal evidence.
  • Maintenance funds must cover the requested period and return.
  • Qualifying health insurance remains necessary.
  • Continuing admission and paid enrolment evidence show that the student is still pursuing the authorised course.
  • The applicable procedure fee must be paid.

The renewed period follows the course duration and is capped at one year. The September 2025 Ministry sheet permits up to two renewals for higher education and post-compulsory secondary authorisations. After a favourable renewal notification, the student applies personally for the renewed TIE within one month.

Can family members apply with the student from India?

Indian mission instructions say no, the eligible family application should follow after the student’s visa has been granted. This India-specific sequence appears on both the New Delhi and Mumbai study-visa pages and on BLS. It should be used for an Indian appointment unless the competent mission provides a different written instruction.

The national Ministry rule is broader. It permits relatives of a higher-education student to apply simultaneously or later, and requires at least 90 natural days to remain on the student’s authorisation for a later application. Eligible family can include a spouse, registered or proven stable partner, minor unmarried children, certain adult children needing support because of disability or illness, and a necessary support person.

Which family instruction controls an India filing?Green is the operational India instruction. Amber records the broader national rule without hiding the conflict.
Official source Published filing sequence Practical treatment
New Delhi, Mumbai and BLS India Family applies after the student obtains the visa Use this sequence for the Indian appointment
National Ministry Hoja 1 Simultaneous or later filing is legally described Do not assume BLS India will accept simultaneous student-family filing

Family members receive the same stay period and status as the student but are not authorised to work. Their maintenance requirement adds 75% of IPREM for the first family member and 50% for each further person. A scholarship can support the broader Spain funding plan, but it only counts where the award evidence actually shows the resources available to the applicant.

Key takeaways

  • Current residence during the previous six months, not passport place of issue, decides whether New Delhi or Mumbai handles the visa.
  • The maintenance benchmark was €600 per student per month on 15 August 2026, and tuition cannot be counted inside that amount.
  • An Indian PCC and medical certificate for the applicable long stay need MEA apostille treatment, while translation follows the competent mission’s current instruction.
  • BLS receives and returns the file, but the Spanish Consular Office can seek more evidence, interview the applicant and decide.
  • A stay over six months brings a personal TIE application within one month of entry. NIE is the number, not the card.
  • Indian mission pages tell eligible family to apply after the student’s visa, even though the national rule also describes simultaneous filing.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Spain student visa take in India?

The legal decision period is one month from the day after submission to the competent Consular Office. It can be extended when the office requests an interview or additional documents. Appointment waiting time, document preparation and passport return sit outside that legal period, so one month is not an end-to-end travel promise.

How much bank balance is needed for a Spain student visa?

Using IPREM published on 15 August 2026, one student starts at €600 for each month of the calculation. A first family member adds €450 monthly and each further member adds €300. Tuition is separate. The accepted balance and evidence depend on duration, family, accommodation and the money’s documented source.

Does Spain require IELTS for a student visa?

Spain’s opened national visa sources do not set one country-wide IELTS score. The institution first decides the language evidence for admission, which can depend on programme language and local rules. The visa file then uses the resulting admission evidence. IELTS proves English ability, not Spanish ability for a Spanish-taught course.

Is a TIE the same as an NIE in Spain?

No. NIE is the personal foreigner identity number, while TIE is the physical card that identifies the holder and evidences legal status. A standalone NIE request uses EX15. A student staying over six months normally applies for TIE with EX17 within one month of entry and should avoid making a duplicate NIE request.

Can a student work on a Spain study visa?

A higher-education study authorisation automatically permits employed and self-employed work that remains compatible with study, normally up to 30 hours per week. Other study and training categories have different conditions and may need another authorisation. The exact study category matters more than the generic words printed on an online visa guide.

Can family apply at the same time as a Spain student?

The national rule describes simultaneous or later family filing for an eligible higher-education student, but New Delhi, Mumbai and BLS India tell families to apply after the student receives the visa. An Indian applicant should follow that India-specific sequence unless the competent Spanish mission gives a different written instruction for the appointment.

Does BLS decide a Spain student visa?

No. BLS is the application-centre channel for intake and return communication. The Spanish Consular Office can ask for missing or additional documents, call a personal interview and issue the decision. A successful BLS submission only means the file entered the process. It does not show that the legal requirements were accepted.
