Under Royal Decree 822/2021, a standard Spanish bachelor’s degree carries 240 ECTS, the European credit measure, and normally represents 4 academic years. For an Indian Class 12 applicant, the harder question is not the degree length. It is how the school credential becomes valid for access, how the chosen university uses international accreditation and subject examination results, and whether the teaching language is realistic. The first task is to identify the qualification category and exact university criteria before registering for subject examinations.

For bachelors in Spain for Indian students, the public-university route and private-university rules can differ. An Indian board credential usually enters the route for education systems outside the EU without a reciprocal access agreement. An IB Diploma or another separately listed qualification follows its own classification.

What is the Class 12 route into a Spanish bachelor’s degree?

An applicant with an Indian school-board credential normally begins with homologation to the Spanish Bachillerato, then obtains the admission evidence required by the destination university. Homologation is the formal recognition of the school qualification against Spain’s upper-secondary award. UNEDasiss is the service that prepares international-applicant admission evidence.

PCE are subject examinations whose results can contribute to a university admission score. For many public universities, the evidence includes UNEDasiss accreditation and PCE results. The university still decides whether the applicant receives a seat.

The UNEDasiss international student classification lists the EU, EHEA, IB, European School and specified reciprocal systems separately. India is not in that direct-access list. UNEDasiss places other education systems in the route for qualifications capable of homologation to the Spanish Bachillerato.

Para acceder a una universidad pública en España necesitarás la Acreditación UNEDasiss con la Calificación de Acceso y examinarte de PCE.

The quotation says a public-university applicant in this route needs UNEDasiss accreditation with an access score and PCE examinations. It doesn’t mean the same PCE set applies everywhere. Recognition and admission are separate. The destination university controls subject weightings, cut-off scores, places and pre-registration.

Which starting point fits the qualification?Green is the usual route, amber needs qualification-specific checking, and red is an unsafe assumption.
Qualification held Starting point Why it matters
Indian Class 12 board credential Other non-EU education-system route Bachiller homologation and the university’s UNEDasiss criteria usually shape access.
IB Diploma held by an Indian citizen IB route The education system and qualification control the route, not citizenship alone.
Indian passport treated as the only classification No reliable route The same citizen can hold a credential that belongs to a different official category.

A shortlist of universities in Spain still needs official-degree status and programme-language evidence. A recognised university does not make every programme suitable. The national university decree defines the standard 240 ECTS Grado, but it doesn’t establish the language or admission score for a particular degree.

What do homologation, UNEDasiss and Selectividad mean?

Homologation declares a foreign non-university qualification equivalent to a Spanish education-system qualification. For bachelor’s access, the relevant comparison is usually with the Spanish Bachillerato. The Spanish education ministry procedure separates homologation from convalidation, which recognises courses so a pupil can continue non-university study in Spain.

UNEDasiss accreditation is a digital admission document for international undergraduate applicants. It can carry an access score, PCE results, Bachillerato modality, recognised subjects and language evidence. It is not the homologation decision. Its services depend on the applicant’s education system and the destination university.

PCE means Pruebas de Competencias Específicas. These are UNEDasiss subject examinations used to add evidence for university admission. PAU is the current official name of Spain’s general university access examination, previously called EBAU in official material. Selectividad is an informal legacy label. A student from a non-Spanish system does not sit the PAU through UNEDasiss. The student takes the PCE subjects that meet the university’s required configuration.

Term What it establishes What it does not establish
Homologation to Bachiller Academic equivalence of the completed school qualification A university place or final admission score
UNEDasiss accreditation International-applicant evidence used by participating universities Universal acceptance by every Spanish university
PCE Subject results that can raise or configure an admission score The same subject set for every degree
PAU, EBAU or Selectividad Current, former and informal wording around university access examinations A separate extra exam that an international applicant adds automatically

This distinction prevents duplicated work. A student who says only that Selectividad is required still has not identified the actual PCE subjects, the regional weighting table, the university’s use of UNEDasiss or the homologation document needed for access.

How do PCE subjects affect the admission score?

UNEDasiss generally recommends at least 4 PCE subjects for applicants from other non-EU education systems seeking a public-university place. That is not a universal Indian-student rule. The university decides which subjects it uses and whether it expects a PAU-aligned configuration.

The 2026 PCE subject offer permits no more than 6 subjects. Question papers are available in Spanish and English, but answers must be written in Spanish except in a foreign-language examination. That rule makes Spanish writing ability relevant even when the intended degree advertises English-taught classes.

A limited-place degree then uses weighting rules. A subject aligned with the degree may add more to the admission score than another passed subject. Earlier nota de corte figures show the last admitted score in an earlier process, not a guaranteed future threshold. The UNEDasiss university guidance directs applicants to the destination university’s criteria and weighting information.

Admission readiness = valid access route + required PCE subjects + competitive weighted score + accepted language evidence

The formula is a decision model, not the university’s arithmetic. The actual score calculation and maximum depend on the regional or university process. The point is that a high Class 12 result cannot replace a missing access document, and a valid homologation cannot replace the weighted subjects needed for a competitive course.

Which Indian documents need recognition and translation?

The ministry document guidance asks for identity evidence, the official diploma or final-examination certificate, and an academic certificate showing courses, subjects, grades and academic years. Its FAQ says Bachiller homologation uses the final certificate and academic evidence for the last 3 courses. The ministry can request more material when it needs to establish equivalence.

Indian public documents can receive an apostille from India’s Ministry of External Affairs. The Embassy of Spain in New Delhi says an Indian apostilled document needs no further consular legalisation for use in Spain. If the receiving authority requires a sworn translation, the full document including the apostille is translated.

  1. The Indian board or issuing authority supplies the official school and marks documents.
  2. The appropriate Indian authentication route precedes the Ministry of External Affairs apostille.
  3. The complete apostilled document receives the official translation required by the Spanish procedure.
  4. The homologation application and university admission file use the format requested by each receiving body.

A university can have a narrower document-language exception for its own process. The University of Barcelona accepts Spanish, Catalan or English academic documents in a specified partial-study procedure. That exception does not change the ministry’s official Spanish-translation rule for school-level homologation.

Visa evidence is a later file with its own consular checklist. A Spain student visa application separates the New Delhi and Mumbai procedures, financial proof, health insurance, apostille and the post-arrival TIE.

Can an Indian student study a bachelor’s degree in English?

English-taught bachelor’s options exist, but the course page must show the language for the complete award, not only a few modules. Spain has no single national IELTS score for every bachelor’s programme. The university or regional admission system decides the accepted evidence and may require Spanish even when some teaching is in English.

The Madrid public-university agreement for 2026-27 provides one regional example. Its annual rules include Spanish-language evidence for applicants from non-Spanish-speaking systems. Other autonomous communities and private universities can use different requirements. IELTS proves English, not Spanish. DELE and SIELE appear in specified university rules.

Programme language also affects the PCE route. The 2026 examinations require answers in Spanish apart from the foreign-language paper. A shortlist based only on an English programme label can therefore fail before degree classes begin.

Stage Possible language question Controlling source
PCE examination Language used to write subject answers Current UNEDasiss subject and examination rules
Regional admission Spanish level required for access Current regional public-university agreement
Degree teaching English, Spanish or co-official language across the curriculum Official programme page
Visa file Evidence that supports the study purpose Current India consular checklist

The cost of studying in Spain adds tuition and city expenses to this academic decision. A private English-taught route may simplify one admission step while increasing tuition materially. A public Spanish-taught route can cost less but demand stronger language and PCE preparation.

What sequence keeps a Spanish bachelor’s application coherent?

The sequence begins with the exact qualification and destination degree, not with a generic form. The UNEDasiss university-information tool says its data reflects criteria supplied up to 6 February 2026 and warns that universities can change them. The destination page for the intended intake therefore controls the final subject and deadline decision.

Step Decision or filing Output needed for the next stage
1 Identify official degrees, teaching language and destination-university criteria A shortlist with the correct access route and weighted subjects
2 Prepare school records for Bachiller homologation Submitted recognition file and any permitted provisional evidence
3 Request the UNEDasiss services used by each university Access score, PCE registration and other required accreditation services
4 Sit the correct PCE subject set Results that match the degree’s weighting table
5 Complete regional or university pre-registration Ranked application submitted by the actual deadline
6 Accept the offer and prepare the study visa Admission, funds, insurance and consular documents

A provisional homologation slip does not promise a favourable decision. A UNEDasiss accreditation does not promise admission. A past cut-off does not promise the same score next year. Keeping those three limits separate makes the application understandable and reduces late surprises.

Current Spain scholarship eligibility affects funding, while the full study route in Spain connects this undergraduate process with institution choice, costs and residence.

Key takeaways

  • A standard Spanish Grado normally has 240 ECTS across 4 academic years.
  • An Indian school-board credential usually enters the other non-EU system route, while an IB Diploma follows the IB classification.
  • Homologation, UNEDasiss accreditation and university admission answer different questions.
  • UNEDasiss generally recommends at least 4 PCE subjects for this public-university route, but the university chooses the relevant combination.
  • The 2026 PCE offer permits up to 6 subjects and normally requires answers in Spanish.
  • Selectividad is informal wording. PAU is the current official label, and international applicants use the required PCE configuration through UNEDasiss.
  • Apostille authenticates an Indian public document, while official translation makes it usable in the required Spanish procedure.
  • English-taught degree availability does not remove PCE, regional language or visa evidence requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Is Indian Class 12 accepted for a bachelor’s degree in Spain?

An Indian Class 12 credential can support access, but it does not enter as automatic direct admission. The usual non-EU route involves homologation to the Spanish Bachillerato and the admission evidence required by the chosen university, often including UNEDasiss accreditation and PCE results for public universities.

Is UNEDasiss the same as homologation?

No. Homologation is the official recognition of the foreign school qualification against the Spanish Bachillerato. UNEDasiss produces international-applicant accreditation used by participating universities. It can include an access score and PCE results, but it does not replace the ministry’s homologation decision.

How many PCE subjects should an Indian student take?

UNEDasiss generally recommends at least 4 PCE subjects for applicants from other non-EU systems seeking public-university admission. The destination university decides the actual set and weightings. The 2026 offer permits no more than 6 subjects, so the degree’s current criteria must shape selection.

Are PCE and Selectividad the same examination?

Not exactly. PCE are specific subject examinations offered through UNEDasiss for international applicants. PAU is the current official name of Spain’s university access examination, formerly EBAU. Selectividad is informal legacy wording. A non-Spanish-system applicant uses the required PCE subjects rather than sitting PAU through UNEDasiss.

Can I study a bachelor’s degree in Spain without IELTS?

Possibly, because Spain has no single national IELTS rule for every bachelor’s degree. The programme decides its English evidence, while a Spanish-taught programme or regional admission system can require Spanish proof. IELTS cannot establish Spanish ability, and an English course label does not settle PCE language rules.

Do Indian school documents need an apostille for Spain?

Official Spanish procedures can require Indian public documents to be apostilled. India’s Ministry of External Affairs issues apostilles for educational documents. Where an official Spanish translation is required, the complete document including the apostille is translated. The receiving ministry, university or consulate controls its exact document set.
