What is MA Digital Humanities at the University of Regensburg?

University of Regensburg’s MA Digital Humanities is a four-semester, 120-ECTS humanities-to-computing degree. The official programme page confirms winter-only entry and mainly German teaching. With no programme tuition, the evidenced two-year route baseline is EUR 24,715, about INR 26.26 lakh, before flights, deposits, computing costs and spending above the visa floor.

The course teaches Python, computer science, machine learning, natural-language engineering and digital research before a 14-ECTS project and 31-ECTS thesis. It isn’t open to every graduate: the previous degree must contain 140 relevant humanities ECTS, and the application adds a research outline, English B2, German B2, VPD and APS.

How much does MA Digital Humanities cost for an Indian student?

Across four semesters, the stated no-tuition plan adds to EUR 24,715, approximately INR 26.26 lakh. It combines four current semester contributions, two years of present visa-finance evidence and one visa fee. The estimate excludes flights, housing deposits, remittance costs and living spend above the immigration floor.

Blocked-account money is proof of access to living funds, not a fee paid to the university and not a guarantee that actual Regensburg costs will fit the monthly release. Converted at EUR 1 = INR 106.2490, the ECB reference rate for 22 October 2026. Bank and remittance rates will differ.

“Blocked bank account (“Sperrkonto”) in Germany with sufficient funds to cover the first year of studies”German Missions in India, study-visa funding guidance

The German Missions in India guidance supports the EUR 11,904 first-year funding figure used here. Rupee conversions use the European Central Bank reference rate of EUR 1 = INR 106.2490 dated 22 October 2026; the ECB Data Portal provides the same reference series.

The University funding page states that ordinary master’s students generally pay no tuition and publishes EUR 208 for winter 2026/27. The amount combines the semester ticket and student-services contribution, and must be checked again for the target semester.

The international funding guidance says most students need at least EUR 1,000 a month. Dormitory rooms are around EUR 280 to EUR 450, while private rooms can cost EUR 600 or more, so a real housing offer should replace the baseline before committing.

The German Missions in India currently use EUR 11,904 as first-year finance evidence. The table extends that figure for transparent two-year planning, but the second-year amount can change and must be rechecked.

The INR figures use the ECB reference rate dated 22 October 2026. APS costs, travel, insurance before enrolment, housing deposits and programme-specific materials are not included.

Can an Indian applicant enter MA Digital Humanities?

Admission requires a 180-ECTS humanities or cultural-studies degree with at least 140 relevant ECTS and a German-equivalent grade of 2.50 or better, where lower numbers are stronger. English and German must each be at B2 at application, followed by DSH-2 or equivalent by enrolment. The research outline supplies half the application grade.

RequirementPublished ruleWhat you do
Academic degree (India)At least 180 ECTS in humanities or cultural studies, grade 2.50 or betterSubmit degree, transcript and grading evidence

Research outline (India)3,000-4,000 characters excluding spaces and references, in German or EnglishPresent an original current DH question and computational contribution
English (India)CEFR B2; certificate, English-written thesis or accepted exemptionDo not rely on English-medium study alone

India file (India)Both VPD and APS required; dMAT depends on the prior degree field; no GRE or GMAT publishedFinish VPD and APS before SPUR submission

The faculty admission page defines the 140-ECTS humanities requirement and research-outline assessment. A mixed or technical award title can’t settle eligibility; the committee needs module descriptions that classify the claimed history, culture, language, literature, art, religion, music or social-science credits.

The outline must formulate a current Digital Humanities question, use current literature and explain what computational methods make newly analysable. AI may support ideation or structure, but generated text does not meet the authorship requirement.

How should an Indian student apply for MA Digital Humanities?

The winter 2027/28 deadline is 1 July 2027. A foreign-degree applicant first obtains uni-assist's VPD and APS verification, then files the programme application through the University's SPUR portal. The faculty advises allowing four to six weeks for the VPD, so the degree review belongs well before the University cut-off.

The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by University of Regensburg.

The application page explains the VPD, APS and SPUR sequence and publishes 1 July as the recurring cut-off. The outline and credit map must be ready before submission; the preliminary reviews don’t replace the programme’s own academic assessment.

Allow four to six weeks for the VPD plus margin for APS. A VPD or APS certificate does not replace the 140-ECTS content review.

The outline should make a narrow, researchable claim about computational analysis rather than advertise a general interest in technology and culture.

Application checkpoint

The VPD is obtained through uni-assist, but the programme application is submitted separately through SPUR.

Application checkpoint

An unsuccessful aptitude procedure can be repeated once, no earlier than the next annual cycle.

What outcomes does Regensburg publish for MA Digital Humanities?

The faculty identifies digital collections, metadata, cultural analytics, digital editions, research infrastructure, knowledge management, text mining, natural-language processing, user-experience research and data analysis as possible directions. It doesn't publish a placement rate, employer cohort or salary survey. The cited informatics median spans experienced technical workers and isn't a Digital Humanities graduate result.

Curriculum and occupation data show preparation and labour-market context. They do not prove placement, starting salary, sponsorship or employment for this programme.

The faculty careers page names cultural, research, language-data and user-experience work. Python, machine learning and the research project can support a technical portfolio, but they can’t turn the programme into a full Computer Science degree or guarantee the cited informatics salary.

The general informatics comparator includes experienced Data Scientists, Machine Learning Engineers and Data Engineers. Many cultural, museum and academic roles fall into different occupation groups.

Applicants should compare actual role requirements for German, software practice and domain expertise with the chosen electives and project before estimating return.

Who is MA Digital Humanities for, and who should look elsewhere?

The strongest fit is a humanities graduate with 140 relevant ECTS, strong German and a computational research question. A mixed humanities-social-science graduate near the threshold needs precise mapping. A computing graduate or an applicant seeking English-only delivery should look elsewhere.

VerdictYour backgroundWhy
Strong fitHumanities graduate with 140 relevant ECTS and a focused DH questionThe academic base and outline can meet both halves of the aptitude assessment.
Needs evidenceInterdisciplinary graduate near the 140-ECTS thresholdThe committee must classify each prior module before the file is eligible.
Do not shortlistComputing graduate or English-only applicantThe course requires a humanities-heavy first degree and mainly German study.

A strong applicant should connect a humanities corpus or question to an appropriate computational method without claiming prior coding that the course does not require. That match isn’t established by the degree title alone.

A borderline applicant should obtain clarity on how the committee classifies social-science and mixed modules before investing in the VPD and translations.

The course is a technical conversion inside the humanities, not a general route from any bachelor’s degree into data science.

What will you study in MA Digital Humanities?

The current guide requires 84 ECTS of compulsory study, at least 18 ECTS in Digital Methods and at least 18 ECTS in Humanities and Digitisation. The table lists all compulsory modules and every published elective container. Variable-credit modules and semester availability determine the exact combination used to reach 120 ECTS.

  • Complete at least 18 ECTS in each elective area

The current module guide supplies the 84-plus-18-plus-18 credit structure. It supersedes the older eight-method-module model for new entrants and shows which modules run in German, English or either language.

The elective areas should be planned together. A technical method without a credible humanities domain, or a humanities topic without enough method practice, weakens the programme’s central proposition.

Should you shortlist MA Digital Humanities?

Shortlist this MA if you are a humanities graduate with an high concentration of relevant credits and want a structured move into computational research. It is a real conversion curriculum in coding terms, but not in subject eligibility or language: the 140-ECTS humanities requirement and German requirements are strict.

The compulsory sequence moves from introductions through Python, computer science, machine learning and NLE into an independent research project and thesis. The two elective areas allow a student to balance technical depth with a humanities domain. This evidence doesn't turn the published career direction into a placement promise.

Do not apply as a computing graduate looking to add culture, or as a mixed-degree applicant with far fewer than 140 humanities ECTS. English-medium previous study alone does not satisfy the English rule unless the thesis was in English, and the programme's main teaching language is German.
