Two Indian students apply to the same Australian university for the same master’s degree. One has a three year BCom, the other a four year BTech. The first is told the course runs three semesters. The second is told two. Both offers are correct, both are made under the same national rule, and almost nothing written for Indian students explains where that rule comes from.

This page works the rule out from the framework that governs it, then shows how Australian universities apply it. It covers what a three year BA, BSc or BCom opens and where it stops, what a four year BE or BTech adds, when a graduate certificate or an honours year is worth using to make up the shortfall, and why a master’s by research changes your student visa queue position under a rule that took effect in November 2025.

Why is the same Australian master’s one year for some students and two for others?

Australian degree lengths are not set by the university’s marketing team. They are set by the Australian Qualifications Framework, which places every qualification on a ten level ladder and states a typical volume of learning for each one. A master’s degree sits at level 9. A bachelor degree sits at level 7. A bachelor honours degree, a graduate certificate and a graduate diploma all sit at level 8.

The framework then says something that decides your whole timeline. A master’s degree is typically 1 to 2 years, but the exact figure depends on two things about what you already hold, namely its AQF level and whether it was in the same discipline.

What you already hold Master’s in the same discipline Master’s in a different discipline
An AQF level 7 bachelor degree, which is where a plain three year Indian degree lands 1.5 years 2 years
An AQF level 8 qualification, meaning a bachelor honours degree, graduate certificate or graduate diploma 1 year 1.5 years

That single table explains every confusing quote you will receive. Half a year comes off when you reach level 8, and another half year comes off when you stay in your own discipline. The same wording appears twice in the framework, once for the coursework master’s and once for the master’s by research, so the rule is the same for both.

Two other lengths are worth recognising. A master’s degree (extended) runs 3 to 4 years after a bachelor of at least three years, the shape used for professionally regulated degrees. And a bachelor honours degree is typically one year following a bachelor degree, or is built into a four year bachelor as an additional year, which is precisely the difference between an Indian three year BSc and an Indian four year BTech.

What does a three year Indian bachelor’s degree actually get you?

It gets you a coursework master’s, which is what the overwhelming majority of Indian students in Australia are actually enrolled in. Australian universities say so in plain language on their own admission pages, and they do not hedge it.

Deakin states that to study a masters by coursework you must have completed at least a three year undergraduate degree or an equivalent qualification. Melbourne asks for an undergraduate degree from a recognised institution plus a minimum weighted average mark for most programmes. Monash publishes the cleanest version of the rule anywhere on the Australian web, in a table of course types that reads, word for word, two semesters when entering with a relevant four year undergraduate degree, three semesters when entering with a relevant three year bachelor degree.

So a three year BA, BSc or BCom is not a problem for admission. What it usually costs you is an extra semester, and the second semester of tuition and living costs that comes with it.

Where the three year degree genuinely stops is the research side. Deakin requires a bachelor degree with honours at second class or above for a masters by research. Melbourne says that to go on to a masters by research or a PhD you first need an honours degree and a master’s in the relevant discipline. Monash asks for a bachelor’s degree of at least four years that includes a research thesis or project, graded at the equivalent of second class honours division B with a mark of 65 or above, or a master’s degree containing a research component worth at least a quarter of a year of full time study.

Read those three together and the pattern is unmistakable. A plain three year Indian bachelor is a normal, accepted entry to a coursework master’s and, on standard entry, is not enough on its own for a master’s by research. That matters more than it looks, for reasons in the visa section below. Narrow exceptions are written into the rules rather than hidden, so if research is your goal, ask rather than assume.

What changes when you hold a four year BE or BTech?

Three things change, and only one of them is the obvious one.

First, the length. Monash finishes the same coursework master’s in two semesters for a relevant four year degree instead of three. That is roughly one semester of tuition saved, and on a Group of Eight fee schedule that is a serious number.

Second, the entry point inside the degree. Universities do not always express this as a different course length, they express it as a different starting point. Monash runs its Master of Business Information Systems at 1.5 or 2 years full time depending on prior qualifications, and the mechanism behind that is entry level 1 at 96 credit points against entry level 2 at 72 credit points. The extra 24 points are foundation units that the handbook says are intended for students whose previous qualification is not in a cognate field. Melbourne does the same thing more visibly, listing a three year course option and a two year course option for its Master of Mechanical Engineering, and saying that entry points offer varying study durations and admission criteria based on the relevance of your prior studies.

Notice what that means. Discipline match can be worth as much as the extra year of your bachelor. A four year BTech in mechanical engineering applying to a data science master’s may be treated as non cognate and land on the long option anyway, while a three year BSc in statistics applying to the same degree may not.

Third, the research door. A four year BE or BTech that included a final year project or thesis is the qualification the research entry criteria are written around, and it is the realistic Indian route into a master’s by research or a PhD without doing an Australian honours year first.

One lever is badly under used. UNSW says on its own course page that recognition of prior learning, which weighs your undergraduate degree, prior study and professional experience, may let you complete the Master of Engineering Science in as little as one year. Credit is assessed after you have an offer, so the duration on the website is a starting position, not a verdict.

Should you take a coursework master’s or a master’s by research?

The academic difference is set in the framework. A master’s by research is designed so that two thirds of the programme is research, research training and independent study, while a coursework master’s is structured teaching with a project or capstone. Australia’s national study portal groups the research master’s with the doctorate under the label higher degree by research.

The consequence Indian applicants are rarely told about is a visa one. Offshore student visa applications lodged from 14 November 2025 are ordered by Ministerial Direction 115, which sorts most applicants into three tiers by how far the provider on their main confirmation of enrolment has used up its allocation of new overseas student commencements. Under 80 per cent is Priority 1, at or past 80 per cent is Priority 2, past 115 per cent is Priority 3.

A student enrolled in a postgraduate research course sits in a separate list in the direction, at section 8(1)(b), which is expressly carved out of that provider test. In other words the research applicant is Priority 1 whatever their university’s allocation looks like. The direction goes further. Its definition of a new overseas student commencement excludes anyone enrolled in a postgraduate research course, so a research enrolment does not even consume the university’s allocation. The department’s published aim is to begin processing Priority 1 applications within 1 to 4 weeks, Priority 2 within 5 to 8 weeks and Priority 3 within 9 to 12 weeks. Our page on Australia student visa processing time and priority tiers works that mechanism through in full.

One honest caution before you plan around this. The legal instrument says postgraduate research course, which covers a master’s by research as well as a doctorate, while the department’s public explainer page writes the same category as postgraduate research (PhD) courses. Home Affairs procedural guidance treats a masters by research and a doctorate alike for other purposes, so the wider reading is the better supported one, but the two wordings do not match. Ask your university to confirm in writing that your confirmation of enrolment will be coded as a postgraduate research course. If you are headed for a doctorate, our guide to PhD and research degrees in Australia covers the funded route.

Money moves too. Research candidates can be considered for Research Training Program support, which is Commonwealth funded and open to international students. At the University of Sydney that is an RTP stipend of AUD 42,754 a year at the 2026 rate, with a fee offset covering 100 per cent of tuition and overseas student health cover. It is competitive, and it is not open to coursework students, who look to university merit scholarships instead.

None of this makes the research master’s the right choice by default. It is a supervised apprenticeship, it needs a supervisor who wants your project, and it fits badly if your aim is a professional qualification and a job. It is simply worth knowing that the two routes are not treated alike.

What works when your degree falls short?

Three routes are commonly suggested to Indian applicants and they are not equally sound.

  • A graduate certificate. One semester at Monash, and half a year to a year under the framework. It lifts you to AQF level 8, the step that takes half a year off the master’s, and it is the standard remedy when your marks or subject mix fall just short. Melbourne publishes the catch plainly, warning that some international students will not be eligible for graduate certificates or diplomas because they may not meet the minimum study duration requirements of a student visa. A standalone six month certificate is often too short to carry a student visa on its own.
  • A graduate certificate packaged with the master’s. The version that usually works, because you get one confirmation of enrolment per course and apply once. It carries a quiet advantage. Where you hold a package, Home Affairs sets your processing priority from the main confirmation of enrolment, usually the final course, so a bridging course does not drag your queue position down.
  • An Australian bachelor honours year. One extra year after a bachelor degree, and the real route into research if your Indian degree has no thesis component. It is slow and it is a full year of international fees, so it earns its place when research is the actual goal and rarely otherwise.

A fourth option is routinely ignored. Ask for credit. Australian universities assess advanced standing after an offer, against your transcript and your work experience, and a strong case can shorten a two year master’s with no bridging course at all.

How long and how expensive is the master’s in your own field?

Duration varies as much by field as by your background, and so does price. The table below is drawn entirely from UNSW course pages so the figures are like for like, with 2026 indicative international fees as UNSW publishes them.

UNSW master’s degree Stated duration 2026 indicative first year fee 2026 indicative fee to complete
Master of Laws 1 year AUD 42,000 AUD 42,000
Master of Public Health 1 year AUD 60,500 AUD 61,500
Master of Teaching (Secondary) 1.3 years full time AUD 47,000 AUD 98,500
Master of Commerce 1.7 years AUD 42,000 AUD 64,000
Master of Professional Accounting 1.7 years AUD 42,000 AUD 64,000
Master of Finance 1 to 2 years AUD 42,000 AUD 86,000
Master of Engineering Science 1 to 2 years AUD 61,000 AUD 127,000
Master of Architecture 2 years AUD 48,500 AUD 101,500
Master of Data Science and Decisions 2 years AUD 62,000 AUD 128,000
Master of Information Technology 2 years AUD 63,000 AUD 130,500

Two things in that table are worth pausing on. Business and law degrees start near AUD 42,000 a year while computing, data and engineering degrees start above AUD 60,000, so the field you pick moves your annual cost by half again before any university choice is made. And UNSW quotes 1.7 and 1.3 rather than 1.5 and 1 because it runs three terms a year rather than two semesters. That is a calendar artefact, not a longer degree, and it is why UNSW can look longer than Monash for the same qualification.

The two fee columns also work as a sanity check on the duration. For most of these the fee to complete is close to the first year fee multiplied by the stated years. Where the two do not line up, and Master of Teaching (Secondary) is the example here, put the question to the admissions office rather than planning around either figure. For a full rupee budget with living costs, read our page on the cost of studying and living in Australia, and convert on the day, since the rate moves.

Field specific detail lives on its own pages. Computing, data science and engineering, including the ERP and SAP master’s Australia is unusually strong in, sit in engineering, IT and data science in Australia. Nursing, public health and the registration maze that follows them sit in nursing, medicine and allied health. The MBA runs on different admissions logic, with work experience minimums Indian applicants routinely underestimate, and has its own page on the MBA in Australia.

Who actually decides whether your Indian degree counts?

Your university does, and nobody else. The Australian Government states it flatly on its own international education site, saying that the education institution assesses overseas qualifications for admission to study and that the Department of Education does not assess overseas qualifications for admission to study.

That one sentence resolves most of the confusion in this article. No Australian body stamps your three year BCom as worth 1.5 years or 1 year of a master’s. Each university reads your transcript against the framework and reaches its own view, which is why the same applicant is genuinely quoted different durations, and why comparing two offers on duration alone is a mistake.

Two other processes are often confused with admission. Skills assessment for migration, run by bodies such as VETASSESS, Engineers Australia or the Australian Computer Society, is separate and is covered in getting an Indian qualification recognised in Australia. Professional registration to actually practise is a third process again, run by the relevant regulator after you graduate.

There is also a bilateral agreement worth knowing about and worth not overstating. Australia and India signed the Mechanism for the Mutual Recognition of Qualifications in New Delhi on 2 March 2023. Australia’s own study portal describes its effect for students as meaning that an Indian student who takes a degree from an Australian university will have that degree recognised in India for the purposes of continuing higher education. Useful if you plan to return and study further. It does not oblige any Australian university to admit you and it does not change the duration table above, so treat it as a recognition mechanism, not an admission shortcut.

One last decision point. A shorter master’s is cheaper, but the Temporary Graduate visa carries its own study requirement your course has to satisfy, so shortening a degree can cost you work rights later. Settle that before you accept a one year offer, using our page on the subclass 485 post study work visa.

Key takeaways

  • Australian master’s length is set by the Australian Qualifications Framework, not by the university. A master’s after a level 7 bachelor is typically 1.5 years in the same discipline and 2 years in a different one.
  • Reaching AQF level 8, through a bachelor honours degree, graduate certificate or graduate diploma, takes half a year off each of those figures.
  • A three year Indian BA, BSc or BCom is a normal, accepted entry to a coursework master’s. Monash finishes it in three semesters, against two semesters for a relevant four year degree.
  • On standard entry, a plain three year bachelor is not enough for a master’s by research. Universities ask for a four year degree with a research thesis, or honours, or a master’s with a research component.
  • Discipline match can be worth as much as the extra year. A non cognate applicant is put on the longer entry level and pays for the foundation subjects.
  • A student enrolled in a postgraduate research course is Priority 1 under Ministerial Direction 115 regardless of the provider’s allocation, and does not count towards that allocation at all.
  • Home Affairs’ legal instrument says postgraduate research course while its public page says postgraduate research (PhD) courses, so get your provider to confirm how your enrolment is coded.
  • Research candidates can be considered for Research Training Program support, which at Sydney is a stipend of AUD 42,754 a year at the 2026 rate plus a full fee offset. Coursework students cannot.
  • A standalone graduate certificate can be too short to support a student visa. Packaged with the master’s it works, and your priority is set by the final course in the package.
  • UNSW quotes 1.7 years where Monash quotes 1.5 because UNSW runs three terms a year. It is a calendar difference, not a longer degree.

Frequently asked questions

Is a three year Indian degree accepted for MS in Australia?

Yes, for a coursework master’s. Deakin asks for at least a three year undergraduate degree, Melbourne asks for an undergraduate degree from a recognised institution plus a minimum weighted average mark, and Monash sets three semesters for a relevant three year bachelor. The usual cost is one extra semester compared with a four year degree, not a rejection.

How long is a master’s degree in Australia for Indian students?

One to two years. Under the Australian Qualifications Framework a master’s after a three year bachelor is typically 1.5 years in the same discipline and 2 years in a different one. After a bachelor honours degree, graduate certificate or graduate diploma it drops to 1 year and 1.5 years respectively.

Does a four year BTech shorten a master’s in Australia?

Usually by about a semester, if the master’s is in a related field. Monash sets two semesters for a relevant four year undergraduate degree against three semesters for a three year one. Discipline match matters just as much, because a non cognate applicant is placed on the longer entry level and studies foundation subjects first.

What is the difference between a coursework master’s and a master’s by research?

A master’s by research is designed so that two thirds of the programme is research, research training and independent study, and it is grouped with the doctorate as a higher degree by research. A coursework master’s is structured teaching with a project or capstone. Entry, funding and student visa processing priority all differ between the two.

Does a master’s by research get faster student visa processing?

Ministerial Direction 115 places a student enrolled in a postgraduate research course in Priority 1 regardless of the provider’s allocation, and the department aims to begin processing Priority 1 applications within 1 to 4 weeks. Home Affairs’ public page words that category as postgraduate research (PhD) courses, so confirm with your university how your enrolment will be coded.

Which are the cheapest universities in Australia for masters?

Price is driven more by field than by university. On UNSW’s own 2026 indicative fees, a business or law master’s starts near AUD 42,000 a year while computing, data and engineering start above AUD 60,000. Regional and outer metropolitan universities generally publish lower fees than the Group of Eight, so compare course pages directly rather than rankings.

Can I do a PhD in Australia after a three year bachelor?

Not on standard entry. Monash asks for a four year bachelor including a research thesis graded at second class honours division A, or a master’s with a research component worth at least a quarter of a year of full time study. The usual routes for a three year graduate are an honours year or a research based master’s first.

Do I need a graduate certificate before a master’s in Australia?

Only if your marks or subject mix fall short. It lifts you to AQF level 8, which takes half a year off the master’s. Melbourne warns that a standalone graduate certificate may be too short to meet a student visa’s minimum study duration, so package it with the master’s rather than applying for it alone.
