Which HKU application route should an Indian student use?
An Indian school-leaver applies directly to HKU through its undergraduate International/Non-JUPAS route. Non-JUPAS simply means the application is outside the Joint University Programmes Admissions System. JUPAS is mainly associated with applicants using the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education, Hong Kong’s school-leaving qualification.

Your school qualification is the place to begin. CBSE and CISCE students had a published Grade 12 minimum in the 2026 cycle. International Baccalaureate and A-level students had to look at their chosen programme because expected scores and subject requirements varied. State-board students need a written answer from HKU about their exact board.

If you study under a state board, I wouldn’t assume that the words Higher School Certificate cover your qualification. My advice is to email HKU with the full name of your board and certificate, and ask for written confirmation before paying the non-refundable application fee. HKU’s India qualification page does not list every board.
How could an Indian applicant meet the English requirement?
The 2026 cycle offered routes other than IELTS. A student using the All India Senior School Certificate, Indian School Certificate or Higher School Certificate could use 90% in Grade 12 English. HKU also listed IELTS Academic 6.5 overall in one attempt and TOEFL iBT 93 in one attempt, subject to its test format and validity rules. HKU’s English table gives the full conditions.
HKU’s pages give different messages about a second language. The India page mentions a pass in a non-English language in Grade 10, while HKU’s second-language FAQ says another language is not compulsory for Non-JUPAS applicants. I would keep the Grade 10 result ready and email HKU for written confirmation before applying.
Does meeting HKU’s minimum make an application competitive?
No. The 90% best-five figure was the 2026 minimum for the named Indian Grade 12 certificates, not a predicted offer score. HKU said that meeting a minimum did not guarantee admission. Its programme table also warned that results above an expected score did not guarantee an offer. The 2026 admissions standards carry both warnings.
There are three simple checks. HKU must accept the school qualification. The applicant must also have the subjects and expected score for each programme. Finally, the statement, reference and interview should support those choices. A high percentage can’t replace a missing prerequisite.
HKU doesn’t publish an India-specific acceptance rate with enough context to help you judge your chances. Focus on the requirements for your programme and the quality of the application you can submit. HKU’s India admissions page is the best starting point for that check.
What can you prepare before HKU applications open?
You don’t need to wait for applications to open. The programme shortlist, document collection and first statement draft can all happen early. Your counsellor can also tell you when the school will release predicted grades and how much notice a referee needs.

The 2026 cycle opened on 24 September 2025, and first-round applications closed at noon Hong Kong time on 26 November 2025. Supporting documents were due by 3 December 2025, with first-round outcomes beginning from 8 December 2025. HKU says this route usually opens in September or October. How does the HKU undergraduate application portal work?
The HKU undergraduate application portal separates grades entered into fields from documents uploaded as proof. The applicant enters all actual results. HKU also says that if only the school counsellor holds the predicted grades, the applicant must make sure the counsellor enters them. A transcript upload doesn’t replace either set of fields. HKU’s International Qualifications page gives those instructions.
HKU’s public guidance used for this page doesn’t explain whether a counsellor receives separate access, uploads a confidential file or enters the grades another way. It also doesn’t state what submission confirmation the applicant can see. The student should follow the live portal prompt, or ask HKU in writing if the school-entry step is unclear.

How do HKU’s three programme choices and personal statement work?
HKU allowed up to three undergraduate choices in the 2026 application. Choice one was the only explicitly top-ranked preference. Choices two and three were equally ranked, and all three were evaluated concurrently and independently. HKU’s programme-choice FAQ explains this unusual order.
Put the degree you genuinely prefer in choice one. Choices two and three should still fit your academic direction because HKU does not treat them as a second and third waiting queue. Before adding a programme, make sure you have its required subjects and expected score.
You should upload a personal statement of no more than 1000 words detailing your interest in applying to the University, the programme(s), etc.
HKU’s FAQ set a maximum of 1,000 words for that shared statement. A convincing statement therefore needs one academic direction that fits all selected programmes, with specific reasons for HKU and the chosen study areas. How should the student, counsellor and referee coordinate?
You complete the form and uploads, while your counsellor may need to enter confidential predicted grades. An academic referee can also provide a report. It is worth agreeing early on who will provide each item and by when. That simple conversation avoids discovering at submission time that a counsellor or teacher is unavailable.

A reference should not be added merely to fill a field. HKU said it was preferred but not mandatory, and it did not prescribe one standard report format. The public guidance used here doesn’t say whether HKU emails the referee, provides a separate link or expects an applicant upload. The live portal instructions should settle the delivery method. What happens after an interview or conditional offer?
An interview is not universal and is not an offer signal. HKU invited only shortlisted applicants where a programme used an interview or test, and schedules varied by programme. Its 2026 general information warned that an invitation was not an indicator of eventual admission. The interview schedule showed which programmes used the stage.
If you apply with predicted grades, HKU may make a conditional offer. Your place is confirmed only after the final results meet every condition in the offer.
