An MBA in Hong Kong is a HK$588,000 to HK$635,000 decision before housing, daily costs and lost salary are added. At the Hong Kong Monetary Authority rate observed on 31 July 2026, that published fee range is roughly INR 71.27 lakh to INR 76.97 lakh. The universities still charge in HKD, and bank rates will differ.

HKUST, HKU and CUHK all ask for at least two years of experience, but their formats, test rules and outcome reporting differ. This comparison keeps each fee and employment percentage attached to its own intake or cohort, then gives you a payback worksheet that uses your career numbers rather than a school placement percentage.

Which Hong Kong MBA fits your career plan?

School Current full-time format Who may prefer it
HKUST Business School 16-month standard route or 12-month accelerator; the longer route can create room for internship or exchange A professional deciding between a faster return and a structured career pivot
HKU Business School Intensive one-year MBA, beginning with eight months in Hong Kong and followed by a London, New York or Hong Kong/Beijing track A candidate who values a compact format and one of the named geographic tracks
CUHK Business School 51-unit curriculum that may be completed in 12 months or extended to 16 months for internship or exchange A candidate who wants optional time for work exposure or exchange

Duration is not just a speed ranking. A 12-month route reduces time away from work, while a 16-month route may preserve an internship or exchange window. HKU builds the geographic track into its one-year structure. The HKUST full-time page, HKU programme page and CUHK MBA page describe the formats.

This page compares full-time MBA decisions only. Undergraduate choices remain on the Hong Kong universities guide, with separate admission routes for HKUST, HKU and CUHK.

Which 2027 MBA applications are open?

Status on August 12, 2026Do not copy a closed cycle forward.
School Published position Applicant implication
HKUST Intake 2026 closed; 2027 application information promised at the end of August 2026 Prepare the file now, but do not invent rounds
HKU 2027 intake applications marked as coming soon; visible 2026 cycle closed Use current requirements, but wait for the live 2027 calendar and fee
CUHK 2027 rounds close on 31 October 2026, 15 December 2026, 31 January 2027, 15 March 2027 and 30 April 2027 The first published 2027 deadline is actionable

Only CUHK had a published 2027 deadline calendar at this cut-off. HKUST says its 2027 information will arrive at the end of August 2026, and HKU says applications are coming soon. These statuses were rechecked on 12 August 2026 at the HKUST deadline page, HKU admissions page and CUHK application page.

Do you need GMAT, GRE or English scores?

School Degree and work experience GMAT or GRE English evidence
HKUST Undergraduate qualification and at least two years of full-time work experience Mandatory; no published minimum. GMAT 660 and GRE 322 are reference averages, not cut-offs If prior undergraduate or postgraduate study was not in English: IELTS 6.5 with each component 5.5, Duolingo 125, or the published TOEFL route
HKU Recognised bachelor’s degree and at least two years of postgraduate full-time work experience Mandatory, with no waiver; valid for five years TOEFL iBT 80 or IELTS 6.5 overall with no component below 5.5 when the qualifying university did not teach or examine in English
CUHK Recognised bachelor’s degree, normally Second Class honours, B average or accepted professional equivalent, plus at least two years of full-time post-qualification experience Not mandatory; a good score can strengthen the file A degree taught in English can satisfy the condition; published alternatives include TOEFL 79 or IELTS 6.5

The sharpest difference is testing. HKUST and HKU require GMAT or GRE for their full-time MBA, while CUHK does not. HKUST’s average scores are class-profile references rather than admission floors. An applicant with only the two-year minimum should still assess the quality, progression and relevance of the experience, because the schools evaluate more than eligibility. Official requirements sit on the HKUST admissions page, HKU admissions page and CUHK requirements page.

For an applicant choosing between a test-required school and CUHK, the decision shouldn’t be reduced to avoiding an examination. A useful GMAT or GRE score can add academic evidence when marks are older, uneven or outside a familiar grading system. Conversely, a strong score won’t repair a vague career plan. The application needs both academic readiness and a credible reason for leaving work at this point.

What belongs in the MBA application?

All three schools need academic records, identity evidence and a professional history. HKUST asks for essays and referees, and shortlisted full-time applicants complete an interview. HKU requests transcripts, degree certificates, test reports, two referee statements, passport and resume, then interviews shortlisted applicants. CUHK lists a CV, degree certificates, transcripts, passport, English evidence where applicable and two recommendations.

The HKU admissions decision is generally available two to four weeks after the interview and is communicated by email.

HKU Business School admissions

A strong file should make the career change legible. The reader needs to see the starting function, evidence of progression, the post-MBA role, and why the selected format helps close that gap. Referees should be chosen for their ability to describe work and growth, not their designation alone. Application facts come from school sources, while the career story remains the applicant’s responsibility.

The school sequence also affects preparation time. Test scores and English results can be started before a round opens, while referee submissions and official records often depend on other people. A practical file has one evidence item for each major claim: performance for academic readiness, responsibility for leadership, and actual target roles for the career goal. This keeps essays, CV and interview answers consistent.

How much do HKUST, HKU and CUHK cost?

School and fee label Tuition or programme fee INR illustration Deposit and compulsory extras
HKUST, intake year not stated on fee page read 12 August 2026 HK$600,000 INR 72.73 lakh HK$65,000 non-refundable deposit, credited to the programme fee
HKU, 2026 intake HK$588,000 INR 71.27 lakh HK$75,000 offer deposit, included in the tuition schedule
CUHK, 2027 intake HK$620,000 INR 75.15 lakh HK$100,000 deposit within tuition, plus HK$15,000 student activities fee and HK$450 caution money

The INR illustrations use HK$1 equals INR 12.1212, derived from the Hong Kong Monetary Authority observation that INR 1 equalled HK$0.0825 on 31 July 2026. Tuition is payable in HKD, so the family’s transfer rate and charges will differ. The HKMA dataset supplies the dated exchange direction.

HKUST automatically considers candidates for merit awards and lists an India Business Professional Award without a published amount. HKU’s 2026 page says applicants are automatically considered for merit scholarships from HK$150,000 to HK$350,000. CUHK’s 2027 fee page still carried 2026 scholarship conditions at the cut-off, so those stale dates and values are not presented as 2027 benefits. Housing and everyday costs sit in the separate Hong Kong cost guide.

A scholarship should enter the family budget only after the offer states its amount and conditions. Until then, the safer plan uses the full fee and treats any award as a reduction later. Deposit timing matters even when the amount is credited to tuition, because the cash may be due before an education loan is fully disbursed. The offer schedule, not the annual headline, controls liquidity.

Can the employment percentages be compared directly?

No. Each school publishes a different cohort, measure and time window. A percentage above 90% can look comparable while answering a different question. The missing denominator and response rate also matter, because they determine who was counted.

School Official label and result What is missing or different
HKUST Full-time MBA Class of 2024: 93% accepted an offer by three months after graduation The visible programme page does not state cohort count, response count, response rate or eligibility denominator
HKU Merged Classes of 2024 and 2025: 99% employment rate; 80% changed industry, 72% function and 74% location The visible report does not state the measurement window, response count or eligibility denominator
CUHK Web page labelled 2021 Graduate Employment Report, using Academic Year 2021-2022: 92% employment rate at three months The cohort is older and the visible page does not give the class denominator

HKUST measures offer acceptance within three months. HKU shows a merged-cohort employment rate without a visible time window. CUHK’s web result is older and has a separate official PDF with a similar 2021 label but different figures for Academic Year 2020-2021. Combining any of these into one ranking would hide the measurement differences. The source pages are HKUST full-time MBA, HKU career services and CUHK career resources.

A school-reported employment percentage is evidence about its labelled cohort, not a salary promise for an individual applicant.

Nbyula interpretation of the three official outcome reports

How can an Indian applicant model MBA payback?

Start with cash investment: tuition, compulsory charges, living costs, financing cost and foregone net salary, less only confirmed scholarship or sponsorship. Then estimate monthly recovery cash as post-MBA take-home pay minus pre-MBA take-home pay and any extra recurring career cost. Payback months equal the cash investment divided by that monthly recovery amount.

Fee base At HK$20,000 recovery a month At HK$30,000 At HK$40,000
HKUST HK$600,000 30.0 months 20.0 months 15.0 months
HKU HK$588,000 29.4 months 19.6 months 14.7 months
CUHK HK$635,000, including activity fee 31.8 months 21.2 months 15.9 months

The three recovery assumptions are roughly INR 2.42 lakh, INR 3.64 lakh and INR 4.85 lakh at the same dated rate. They are applicant-controlled scenarios, not observed salaries. The table excludes accommodation, daily spending, tax, interest, foregone income and exchange-rate movement, so it cannot be treated as a complete return-on-investment claim.

The most revealing input is incremental monthly cash, not gross post-MBA salary. A candidate already earning well may recover the investment more slowly than someone making a larger career jump, even if both accept the same job. Families can also run a conservative case with delayed employment and a base case with the expected joining month. That comparison exposes how much of the decision depends on timing.

How should language and immigration affect the choice?

HKUST says Chinese-language importance varies by job. Regional roles involving overseas markets may not require Chinese, while local-market or mainland-China roles often need Cantonese or Putonghua. An English-taught MBA does not make the hiring market language-neutral. Before paying a deposit, an applicant can collect 20 realistic vacancies and record required language, location and function. The HKUST MBA FAQ gives the school-level language context.

The complete Hong Kong study route places the MBA decision beside programme status, cost and immigration. Non-local students also need the Hong Kong student visa process after accepting an offer. Graduate immigration belongs to the separate IANG guide. Neither status should be assumed from the MBA brand alone, because the exact programme and current immigration conditions matter.

Key takeaways

  • HKUST and CUHK offer 12-month and 16-month choices; HKU runs an intensive one-year format.
  • HKUST and HKU require GMAT or GRE; CUHK does not make it mandatory.
  • Only CUHK had a published 2027 deadline calendar on August 12, 2026.
  • Published tuition and compulsory-fee bases sit near INR 71.27 lakh to INR 76.97 lakh at the dated rate.
  • Deposits reduce the tuition balance, but their timing creates an early cash requirement.
  • The three official employment percentages are not directly comparable.
  • Payback should use the applicant’s own incremental cash, not a placement percentage.
  • Target-job language requirements belong in the decision before deposit payment.

Frequently asked questions

Which Hong Kong MBA is one year?

HKU presents its full-time MBA as an intensive one-year programme. HKUST has a 12-month accelerator and a 16-month standard route. CUHK says its 51-unit curriculum may be completed in 12 months or extended to 16 months for internship or exchange.

Is GMAT compulsory for an MBA in Hong Kong?

It depends on the school. HKUST and HKU require GMAT or GRE for full-time admission. CUHK does not make either test mandatory, though it says a good score can strengthen an application. None of these test policies replaces the work-experience and degree requirements.

How much work experience is required?

All three schools ask for at least two years. HKUST specifies full-time experience, HKU specifies postgraduate full-time experience, and CUHK specifies full-time post-qualification experience. Meeting two years makes a candidate eligible for this element, but it does not by itself make the profile competitive.

How much does a Hong Kong MBA cost in INR?

The published comparison spans roughly INR 71.27 lakh for HKU’s 2026 tuition to INR 76.97 lakh for CUHK’s 2027 tuition plus activity fee. These illustrations use a 31 July 2026 HKMA exchange observation. Banks charge their own rate and transfer costs.

Are MBA deposits separate from tuition?

The published HKUST, HKU and CUHK deposits are credited within the programme-fee or tuition schedule, so they reduce the later balance. They still create a large early cash requirement. CUHK also lists a separate student activities fee and refundable caution money for the 2027 intake.

Which MBA has the best employment rate?

The official percentages cannot support a clean ranking. HKUST reports offer acceptance within three months, HKU reports a merged-cohort employment rate without a visible window, and CUHK publishes an older cohort. Missing denominators and response rates make a direct comparison misleading.

Can an Indian applicant receive an MBA scholarship?

Yes, but awards are competitive. HKUST lists automatic merit consideration and an India Business Professional Award without a published amount. HKU’s 2026 page lists automatic merit awards from HK$150,000 to HK$350,000. CUHK’s 2027 page carried stale 2026 scholarship conditions at the cut-off.

Is Chinese required for jobs after an MBA?

Not for every role. HKUST says regional jobs involving overseas markets may not require Chinese, while local-market or mainland-China roles often need Cantonese or Putonghua. Applicants should examine real target vacancies before paying a deposit instead of assuming an English-taught MBA creates a language-neutral market.
