An MBA in Norway is mainly a part-time Executive MBA for experienced professionals, while an MSc is a full-time academic master’s for recent or early-career graduates. The current general-management English option is BI’s Executive MBA, which requires at least six years of relevant full-time work and costs NOK 636,500 before travel. A fresh graduate should begin with the full-time master’s options, not BI’s MBA application.
This choice changes the admission evidence, teaching schedule, total cost and immigration position. The official award title matters because a business or management subject doesn’t make a course an MBA.
What is the difference between an Executive MBA, an executive master and an MSc?
An Executive MBA is an MBA designed around substantial professional experience and continued employment. An executive master is a wider family of part-time awards for working professionals, so the final degree may or may not be an MBA. An MSc is normally a full-time academic master’s that selects applicants mainly through their previous degree, subjects, grades and tests.
The institution’s official award title settles the label. A short executive module can carry academic credit without awarding a complete degree, and a collection of management subjects does not change an MSc into an MBA. The complete programme page must name the final award and all requirements for receiving it.
| Official award label | Applicant it is designed for | Schedule and completion rule | Admission and residence meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Executive MBA | Experienced manager, specialist or entrepreneur with the published years of relevant work | Part-time teaching blocks and online work completed alongside employment | Work evidence is central. A part-time award does not automatically support a full-time student residence permit |
| Executive master other than an MBA | Working professional seeking the specialisation named in that award | Part-time modules that lead to the named degree only after every published completion condition is met | The applicant must use the final award title. MBA admission or career claims cannot be inferred from management content |
| Master of Science in business or management | Recent or early-career graduate with the required academic background | Usually two years of full-time study, commonly equal to 120 ECTS | Academic eligibility and full-time funding are central. A qualifying course may use the student residence route |
BI lists its Executive MBA separately from its full-time Master in Business. NHH states that its general executive programme awards a Master of Business Administration. UiA’s English Management and Business Development programme is a two-year master’s, not an MBA.
Which current Norway programmes are officially MBAs?
The official programme search verified three MBA-labelled Norwegian options with current admission, language, schedule and fee information on 15 August 2026. BI has the only general-management English MBA verified in that search. NHH’s general MBA is in Norwegian, while its English MBA is limited to Seafood Management. No other general English MBA was verified on the official pages checked, although a later intake may add or remove programmes.
| Programme | Official award, workload and duration | Teaching language and required attendance | Total programme tuition in NOK |
|---|---|---|---|
| BI Executive MBA | Executive MBA, 90 ECTS over 18 months | English. Four core weeks in Oslo, one in Berkeley, three one-week electives and online sessions | NOK 636,500 for the February 2027 cohort, paid in three instalments. Travel and accommodation are extra |
| NHH Executive MBA | Master of Business Administration, 90 credits over 22 months | Norwegian. Part-time, mainly in Oslo, with two study trips | NOK 595,000 for the complete programme |
| NHH Executive MBA in Seafood Management | Executive Master of Business Administration, 90 credits over about two years | English. Part-time teaching in Bergen and international study locations for seafood and related sectors | NOK 545,000 for the complete programme. Travel and accommodation are extra |
Three MBA-labelled programmes verified on official pages on 15 August 2026. 60 ECTS represents one full academic year of workload. Tuition is the full-programme amount in NOK.
A professional who can’t study in Norwegian can remove NHH’s general MBA immediately. The English Seafood Management route can fit fisheries, aquaculture, food supply chains and related services, but it doesn’t show that NHH offers healthcare, finance or other popular MBA specialisations in English. Each claimed specialisation needs its own official programme page.
What work experience and documents do Norway MBA programmes require?
Work experience is a formal admission condition for the two general MBA programmes. BI normally requires six years of relevant full-time work and a minimum age of 25. NHH requires five years of relevant work after education and wants employer-signed evidence rather than a CV alone.
The comparison below works down one institution column. An applicant is ready only when the education, experience, employer evidence, selection, finance and language rows are all resolved for the same intake. For an Indian degree, 180 ECTS describes about three European full-time academic years, but BI or NHH still decides whether the actual qualification is equivalent.
| Application evidence | BI Executive MBA | NHH general Executive MBA |
|---|---|---|
| Prior education | Bachelor’s corresponding to 180 ECTS. The published page allows exceptional individual assessment but names no profile that guarantees it | Bachelor’s or higher education corresponding to 180 credits. A prior-learning assessment exists but is not a predictable replacement for the standard route |
| Relevant work experience | At least six years of relevant full-time work | At least five years after completing education |
| Employer evidence | Two work-related certificates or recommendation letters | Signed employer confirmation naming the employer, job title, share of full-time hours and employment duration |
| Selection process | Document review and an online interview lasting about 45 minutes | Relevant applicants may be invited to a digital interview |
| Finance document | A financial plan is required. BI’s public page does not define the format, so the current application instructions must supply it | No separate financial-plan format is named on the admission page checked |
| Teaching language | English proficiency is assessed in the interview | The general programme is taught in Norwegian |
BI also asks for academic records, an updated CV, two recommendation letters, passport evidence and a 500 to 800 word motivation essay. The essay covers the applicant’s career path, achievements, reason for applying and future fit. The financial-plan format is not explained on the public admission page, so it should not be guessed from a bank statement or sponsor letter.
BI interviews a qualified applicant online for about 45 minutes and says a decision normally follows within one week. NHH’s employer letter must be signed, preferably by a manager or human-resources representative, and state the company, role, share of full-time hours and duration. A CV or employment contract alone does not meet that published evidence rule.

How do language and attendance change the programme choice?
Language and in-person attendance can remove a programme before its price matters. BI’s course is in English. NHH’s general MBA is in Norwegian. NHH Seafood Management is in English but serves one group of industries.
BI’s February 2027 calendar includes four mandatory one-week teaching blocks in Oslo and one in Berkeley. Students also choose three one-week electives from locations that include Oslo, Shanghai, Madrid, Potsdam and Stockholm. Between those visits, four-hour online webinars run on alternate Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings.
The participant can remain employed, but the calendar creates repeated visa, flight, hotel, leave and time-zone demands. BI includes study materials in tuition but excludes flights and accommodation. An employer approving a part-time degree has not necessarily approved eight separate teaching weeks and the online timetable.
NHH’s general programme is mainly in Oslo and is compatible with full-time work, but its teaching language remains Norwegian. An English-language university website does not make the programme itself English-taught.
How much are MBA fees in Norway for Indian students?
The three verified MBA programmes publish total tuition from NOK 545,000 to NOK 636,500. At an indicative INR 9.97 per NOK, this is about INR 54.34 lakh to INR 63.46 lakh before travel, accommodation and possible income loss.
| Programme and cohort | Total tuition in NOK | Approximate total tuition in INR lakh | Cost excluded from tuition |
|---|---|---|---|
| BI Executive MBA, February 2027 cohort | NOK 636,500 | INR 63.46 lakh | Flights and accommodation for the mandatory in-person teaching blocks |
| NHH Executive MBA | NOK 595,000 | INR 59.32 lakh | Travel, accommodation and any separately stated materials |
| NHH Executive MBA in Seafood Management | NOK 545,000 | INR 54.34 lakh | Travel and accommodation for Bergen and international sessions |
Total programme tuition converted at INR 9.97 per NOK from ECB reference rates on 17 July 2026. INR lakh means 100,000 Indian rupees. The NOK invoice is binding.
The conversion uses European Central Bank reference values of EUR 1 to INR 110.1020 and EUR 1 to NOK 11.0390. A bank or card provider adds its own margin, and the NOK-to-INR rate can change before each instalment.
BI’s executive tuition page lists NOK 615,000 for the 2026/27 category, while its programme page lists NOK 636,500 for the cohort starting in February 2027. The programme-specific February 2027 amount is the relevant planning figure for that cohort. The signed study contract establishes the final fee.
The cost of studying in Norway guide covers residential study. A BI participant based in India instead needs a journey budget for each teaching block, including the correct visa entries, flights, hotels, local transport and leave from work.
How can you test whether a Norway MBA will pay back?
A cash payback test uses only the additional after-tax income or business profit that the degree can reasonably create. Promotion status, confidence and professional contacts can matter, but they are not cash and do not reduce the amount that must be recovered.
Required annual after-tax cash gain = (tuition + travel + accommodation + other study costs + foregone income) ÷ recovery years
The worked table starts with BI tuition alone. A three-year target means dividing NOK 636,500 by 3. A five-year target divides the same tuition by 5. Flights, hotels, leave and lost income are deliberately absent, so the applicant’s real annual cash hurdle will be higher.
| Recovery period after graduation | Tuition included in NOK | Additional annual after-tax cash gain in NOK | Approximate annual gain in INR lakh |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 years | NOK 636,500 | NOK 212,167 per year | INR 21.15 lakh per year |
| 5 years | NOK 636,500 | NOK 127,300 per year | INR 12.69 lakh per year |
Recovering BI tuition in three years therefore requires about NOK 212,167 of additional after-tax cash in each year. Adding travel and accommodation raises that amount. A promotion that was already likely without the degree should not be counted as an MBA return.
Employer sponsorship reduces the participant’s own cost but can add a service commitment or limit an immediate job change. The personal calculation should include the amount paid by the employer, the amount paid by the participant and the value of unpaid leave separately.
Does BI’s Executive MBA support a Norway student residence permit?
No. BI presents its part-time Executive MBA as a short-visit programme and says participants need a tourist visa, not a full-time student residence permit. This route lets an Indian participant attend approved teaching visits. It does not provide Norwegian residence or student work rights.
The BI EMBA is a part-time programme, so you only need to apply for a tourist visaBI Norwegian Business School
For an Indian passport holder, the official route is a Schengen visitor visa. Norway in India limits visitor stays to 90 days in any 180-day period. The applicant registers online, pays the visa fee and submits the application, passport and checklist documents through the stated India process.
BI’s schedule involves several separate journeys. A person who needs to enter the Schengen area more than once must request the required number of entries and document the genuine need. The embassy decides whether to issue a single, double or multiple-entry visa. Even a multiple-entry visa does not increase the total 90 days allowed in any 180-day period.
A university study permit is a different process. UDI requires full-time admission, somewhere to live, at least NOK 15,488 per month or NOK 170,368 for the 2026/27 academic year, and tuition funds or proof of payment when tuition applies. A qualifying permit normally allows up to 20 hours of work a week during study and full-time work in holidays. The Norway student residence guide covers that full-time route.
Is an MBA in Norway free for Indian students?
No, an MBA in Norway isn’t generally free for Indian students. Indian degree students normally pay tuition unless they meet a defined exemption, and the current Executive MBA pages publish their own programme fees.
Degree seeking students from outside of EU/EEA and Switzerland must normally pay tuition feesStudy in Norway
The national exemptions include specific residence connections, doctoral candidates, exchange arrangements and named cooperation programmes. Indian citizenship by itself is not an exemption. An applicant relying on one of these categories needs written confirmation that it applies to the exact programme and fee invoice.
BI publishes an Executive MBA Scholarship worth 25 per cent of tuition for selected candidates. It is deducted from the last instalment only when the candidate receives the award and meets the academic progression conditions. The initial finance plan must therefore carry the full fee. Other Norway scholarships need the same named-award and eligibility check.
Which full-time business master’s options can a recent graduate compare?
Norway has current full-time business and management master’s programmes with different academic filters and annual fees. The table gives the full two-year tuition arithmetic so annual and total amounts cannot be confused. Living costs and lost salary remain outside every total.
| Full-time programme | Official duration and workload | Annual tuition in NOK | Two-year tuition in NOK | Academic evidence assessed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BI Master in Business | 2 years, 120 ECTS, with seven majors | NOK 166,700 for BI’s published standard non-EU degree rate | NOK 333,400 | Relevant bachelor’s credits, grades, GMAT or GRE and English evidence |
| NHH MSc in Economics and Business Administration | 2 years, 120 ECTS | NOK 204,000 | NOK 408,000 | Relevant bachelor’s, academic subject requirements, grade evidence and the non-EU application file |
| UiA Management and Business Development | 2 years, 120 ECTS | NOK 63,000 | NOK 126,000 | Relevant bachelor’s, named subject credits, methods credits and minimum grade |
The BI two-year tuition is NOK 333,400 before living costs, not NOK 166,700 for the whole degree. UDI’s current NOK 170,368 academic-year living amount would also be needed for each permit year at the current rate, along with housing, travel and personal expenses. Future UDI amounts and tuition can change.
BI normally asks non-Nordic master’s applicants for GMAT or GRE and English proof such as IELTS 6.5 unless a published waiver applies. UiA asks for a relevant 180 ECTS bachelor’s, specified subject depth, social-science methodology and a weighted grade of C or better. The Norway university comparison begins with the programme and its current non-EU route rather than the institution name.
A residential course also creates a separate post-study work question. Admission to the master’s does not guarantee a later job or immigration result, so that decision should not be used to justify the tuition before the current immigration route has been checked. The broader study in Norway comparison keeps that uncertainty separate from admission.
- BI has the only general-management English MBA verified in the official programme search, and it requires six years of relevant full-time work.
- NHH’s general Executive MBA is in Norwegian, while its English Seafood Management MBA serves a specific group of industries.
- BI’s February 2027 Executive MBA costs NOK 636,500 before the travel and accommodation required by its teaching calendar.
- BI’s part-time MBA uses short Schengen visits for an Indian participant, not the full-time student residence route.
- Indian applicants should not budget on a free MBA or an unconfirmed scholarship.
- The payback calculation uses additional after-tax cash and total personal cost, not a promised salary.
Frequently asked questions
Can an Indian student do an MBA in Norway?
Yes, when the official programme accepts the applicant’s degree, work experience, documents and language profile. BI’s English Executive MBA normally requires a bachelor’s comparable to 180 ECTS, minimum age 25 and six years of relevant full-time work. It is part-time and designed to be completed while employed.
Which university offers an English MBA in Norway?
BI Norwegian Business School offers the general-management English Executive MBA verified in the current official search. NHH offers an English Executive MBA in Seafood Management for that sector. NHH’s general Executive MBA is taught in Norwegian. A later intake may change the available set.
Is an MBA in Norway free for Indian students?
No. BI lists NOK 636,500 for its February 2027 Executive MBA, while NHH lists NOK 595,000 for its general Executive MBA. Indian degree students also normally pay tuition unless a stated exemption applies. A competitive scholarship should reduce the budget only after a written award.
How much does a Norway MBA cost in rupees?
At the indicative 17 July 2026 ECB-derived rate of INR 9.97 per NOK, BI tuition is about INR 63.46 lakh and NHH general Executive MBA tuition is about INR 59.32 lakh. These estimates exclude travel and accommodation. The NOK invoice and the payment-day conversion rate control the rupee cost.
How much work experience is needed for an MBA in Norway?
BI normally requires at least six years of relevant full-time work and minimum age 25. NHH’s general Executive MBA requires at least five years of relevant work after education. Employer-signed evidence matters. A CV alone does not meet the NHH documentation rule.
Can a fresh graduate study an MBA in Norway?
The current general Executive MBA routes are not designed for fresh graduates. A recent graduate can compare full-time business and management master’s programmes that assess the bachelor’s subjects, grades, tests and English evidence. The official award will be an MSc or another named master’s, not an MBA.
Does BI’s Executive MBA provide a Norway student visa?
No. BI says participants use a tourist visa for its part-time Executive MBA. For an Indian passport, that means the Schengen visitor route and its entry and 90-day rules. UDI’s university study permit instead requires full-time admission, housing, living funds and tuition evidence.
Is an MSc in Business the same as an MBA?
No. BI lists its two-year full-time Master in Business separately from its Executive MBA. The MSc selects applicants through academic preparation, while the Executive MBA requires substantial professional experience. The award title, schedule, admission evidence and immigration route are different.
