An MS or PhD in South Korea can be fully funded, particularly in science and engineering, but an admission offer does not make it automatically free. Indian applicants should compare the written tuition cover, spendable monthly cash, duration, renewal rules and laboratory conditions before accepting. POSTECH’s published monthly total, for example, includes both tuition and living components.

Funding varies by scholarship, department and laboratory, while an MBA is usually self-funded. Medicine is a separate recognition decision because Yonsei’s Korean-taught route does not meet the National Medical Commission (NMC) English-medium condition for an Indian graduate seeking registration in India.

How graduate funding works

There isn’t one Korea-wide funding formula. A package can combine a government-supported project, a university scholarship and a research or teaching assistantship, with a different share from each source.

KAIST’s current scholarship page says its regular international scholarship covers full tuition, national health insurance and a stipend whose amount depends on research involvement. Its more selective KAIST Global Presidential Scholarship (KGPS) for master’s and integrated applicants and KAIST Prestige Scholarship (KPS) for PhD applicants are separate awards, not figures to combine. POSTECH presents funding through regular teaching assistant (TA) and research assistant (RA) packages. Its published total includes a tuition component and a living component, while the actual amount can differ by laboratory and an advisor may add an allowance. The current financial-aid table separates those amounts.

SNU’s President Fellowship is narrower than a general PhD scholarship. The Fall 2026 notice limits it to PhD applicants who are teaching or instructional staff at a recognised university in a developing country. The award includes full tuition for six semesters and a living allowance of 1,500,000 to 2,000,000 KRW a month for three to four years. SNU publishes the eligibility and benefit table.

Brain Korea 21 FOUR (BK21 FOUR) is another possible government-supported layer, but it isn’t a promise to every international student. The National Research Foundation states that participating teams may award support to up to 70% of their participating graduate students within budget. Its 2025 monthly standards are 1,000,000 KRW for master’s students, 1,600,000 KRW for PhD students and 1,300,000 KRW for PhD students who have completed coursework. A useful offer letter or funding statement separates the tuition amount, monthly cash, insurance, dormitory charges, award duration, renewal conditions and any laboratory-specific top-up. When to contact professors

Contact a professor before applying when the department asks for it or a current advisor list shows a suitable laboratory, but Korea has no single national rule. An unanswered email doesn’t establish an admission rule, while a friendly reply doesn’t establish a funding commitment.

POSTECH publishes an Available Advisors List for each application round. Its admissions notice board listed a 2026 to 2027 second-round version on July 5, 2026, just before the current application window opened. The current POSTECH notice board carries the round-specific list.

For KAIST, use the department’s current instructions alongside the central application guide. A research proposal, supervisor preference or prior contact can carry different weight across departments. The useful distinction is simple. Naming a prospective supervisor, contacting one and receiving a funding promise are three separate things.

For a professor on POSTECH’s round-specific list, the pre-application email should confirm whether the laboratory is recruiting and whether the proposed topic fits. After an offer, supervision and every funding component need to appear in writing rather than remain in informal email.

MS, MBA or PhD

An MS fits research training after a bachelor’s degree, a PhD fits independent research after an eligible master’s, and an MBA is usually a self-funded management route. Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) routes are the ones most likely to use the scholarship and assistantship funding described above. A prospective medical student planning Indian registration must first test the degree against NMC conditions.

An MBA has different economics. The three programmes compared below publish total tuition around 46,420,000 to 53,000,000 KRW on their current or latest stated fee basis. They begin in August or September, and none of the three current pages presents the degree like a funded STEM assistantship.

Graduate admission requirements

KAIST requires an eligible bachelor’s degree for master’s and integrated study, while POSTECH requires the degree evidence, English proof and two recommendations listed in its current guide. KAIST requires a master’s degree for PhD admission and accepts a four-year bachelor’s degree, a three-year Bologna-compliant degree or a British-pattern honours degree for master’s entry. Another three-year structure may need an equivalency assessment under KAIST’s current degree rules.

KAIST currently accepts IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEIC 720, TEPS 326, or TOEFL iBT 83 for tests taken before January 21, 2026 and 4.5 on the revised scale after that date. Indian citizens can use its country-specific waiver only if they completed an eligible degree in India with English as the medium of instruction and submit an official medium-of-instruction certificate.

POSTECH’s Spring and Fall 2027 guide lists IELTS 6.0, TOEFL iBT 79, TOEIC 750 or TEPS 327. It also permits an official certificate showing that the previous degree was taught in English. The guide requires two recommendation letters. The current POSTECH guide contains the full checklist.

Neither of these two current general-admission sources lists GRE or TOPIK as a required item. That finding is limited to these routes. A department, scholarship or later stage can ask for additional evidence, so use the checklist for your exact programme.

These differences affect application sequencing. An applicant who satisfies the document route may not need to wait for a new English test result, but recommendation letters and degree evidence remain separate requirements. The saved test step doesn’t remove the rest of the file.

MBA fees and terms

Korea University says its Global MBA is a one-year programme with six modules, a September start and classes taught entirely in English. Its current FAQ publishes tuition of 23,210,000 KRW per semester, or 46,420,000 KRW for the programme, subject to increase.

SKK GSB lists a full-time MBA of one year or one and a half years, beginning in August. Its tuition page gives a 2025 basis of 53,000,000 KRW plus a 1,300,000 KRW entrance fee and warns that tuition changes each year. The SKK amount is a planning figure.

Yonsei’s Global MBA tuition page lists 49,841,000 KRW for academic year 2025 to 2026, payable in three equal instalments and subject to change. Fall 2027 application dates aren’t published on these programme pages as of August 10, 2026. Their current calendars show the sequence, but the previous cycle isn’t an expected deadline.

The three published totals sit within a fairly tight fee band, but programme length changes the monthly budget. Korea University’s amount is compressed into one year. SKK GSB offers one-year and one-and-a-half-year paths, while Yonsei uses three instalments. Tuition alone therefore doesn’t show how much rent, insurance and living expenditure will accumulate before graduation.

Medicine and Indian registration

Yonsei’s Korean-taught Medicine route does not meet the NMC rule that a foreign medical degree used for Indian registration must have English as its medium of instruction. Yonsei’s Spring 2027 international guide accepts Medicine applications, requires TOPIK Level 5 or an equivalent Yonsei Korean Language Institute certificate, and includes an on-site interview for Medicine applicants in its current language and interview requirements.

The decisive issue for a prospective Indian applicant is registration in India. Regulation 4(a)(iii) of the National Medical Commission’s Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 requires the foreign medical degree’s medium of instruction to be English. Regulation 4(b) also requires registration or a licence to practise in the country that awarded the degree, at the same level as its citizens. The controlling NMC Gazette notification contains both conditions.

Yonsei’s admissions office has separately stated that its College of Medicine degree programme is conducted in Korean. The current TOPIK level 5 requirement is consistent with that statement. An applicant beginning after the 2021 regulation took effect therefore shouldn’t assume that admission to Yonsei Medicine leads to registration in India. The English-medium condition isn’t satisfied by an English application form or an English test used for another university. Yonsei’s official answer states the teaching language.

TOPIK Level 5, placed in context by the TOPIK score structure, proves Korean ability for admission but does not change the NMC rule for the degree’s teaching language. Indian applicants considering other institutions can use the South Korean university comparison without carrying Yonsei Medicine’s recognition problem across to unrelated programmes.

Spring 2027 deadlines

POSTECH’s second graduate round is open from July 6 to September 11, 2026. KAIST’s regular Spring 2027 graduate round runs from August 18 to September 1, 2026. These are current university dates, not estimates. POSTECH shows the open round, and KAIST publishes its yearly timeline.
