There is no single best Korean university for every Indian applicant. The first shortlist test is your degree level and subject, followed by the teaching language of the named programme. KAIST and POSTECH are the clearest first checks for English-medium graduate science and engineering, while Yonsei Underwood International College is the clearest English undergraduate option among the universities compared here.

The seven-university comparison covers Seoul National University, Korea University, Yonsei University, KAIST, POSTECH, Sungkyunkwan University and Hanyang University. It then compares 2026 tuition, Korean conditions after admission and the Spring 2027 application status current on 10 August 2026.

Which universities teach in English?

KAIST and POSTECH publish broad English policies for graduate study, while Yonsei Underwood International College (UIC), Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) and Hanyang publish named undergraduate English options. Regular programmes at Yonsei and Korea University still need a course-level check before application.

The current guides reviewed for this page don’t publish an institution-wide percentage of English-taught courses. Korea University’s 2027 guide tells applicants to check the course catalogue and the number of English-taught courses in their intended department. An unsourced percentage is an estimate, not a university fact.

“Our official language of communication and instructions for international students at KAIST is English.”

KAIST International Graduate Admissions

University Teaching-language evidence Remaining programme check
KAIST The graduate eligibility page makes English the official language for international graduate applicants Check the individual undergraduate course plan if you are applying after Class 12
POSTECH The graduate admissions FAQ says all graduate programmes are taught entirely in English Don’t extend that graduate statement to every undergraduate class
Yonsei UIC Underwood International College describes itself as an English-language four-year liberal arts institution with an extensive English class list UIC is one college, not all of Yonsei University
SKKU The Spring 2027 guide lists named English Track units Confirm that your exact department appears in the English Track list
Hanyang The Spring 2027 guide marks Data Science, Business Administration and International Studies as English Track options The required score is different for International Studies
Korea University The Spring 2027 guide names International Studies as an English Track major Count suitable English classes in the current catalogue before choosing another major
Seoul National The international admissions page provides programme guides without promising one university-wide English track Ask the department which compulsory modules are offered in English

SKKU’s named list is unusually clear. For Spring 2027 it includes Global Economics, Global Business Administration and Human Science and Society. It also includes Chemical Engineering, Advanced Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nano Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering. English Track students are exempt from TOPIK requirements for major placement, major registration and graduation.

Hanyang’s list is shorter. Data Science and the Business Administration English Track require TOEFL iBT 80 or IELTS 6.0. International Studies requires TOEFL iBT 89 or IELTS 6.5. The current guide also says the latter has an English interview. You can’t use the easier score for the more demanding department.

Yonsei UIC is the clearest English undergraduate choice within SKY, but its scope matters. It is a liberal arts college with its own divisions and admissions process. It isn’t evidence that a regular Yonsei engineering or science degree will be fully taught in English.

How do the seven universities compare?

Once teaching language and subject fit are settled, the next comparison is whether a Korean condition, closed intake or level-specific rule removes an otherwise suitable option. SKY means Seoul National University, Korea University and Yonsei University.

University Best-supported fit Condition that may rule it out
Seoul National University A broad academic choice if you can verify the department’s teaching language Its Spring 2027 international window closed on July 9, 2026
Korea University International Studies, or a Korean-medium route with a clear language plan Major-course access can be restricted by your Korean level
Yonsei University UIC for an English liberal arts route, or regular Yonsei with Korean readiness UIC’s application page displays two different closing dates
KAIST Science and engineering, especially graduate study in English The India English-test waiver described below applies to graduate admission
POSTECH Science and engineering with strong undergraduate and graduate funding The broad all-English statement is published for graduate programmes
Sungkyunkwan University One of its nine named Spring 2027 English Track units Korean Track and English Track have different TOPIK consequences
Hanyang University Data Science, Business or International Studies in its English Track Korean Track admits may have to delay degree study until TOPIK 4

Visa certification does not create a prestige order either. The Korean government’s International Education Quality Assurance System (IEQAS) list, last modified March 3, 2026, includes all seven universities. IEQAS certification brings relaxed visa screening criteria and additional weekday part-time work allowances, but it does not replace the embassy’s document checklist.

The certification tier sits inside the wider South Korea admission and D-2 visa sequence, where the Standard Admission Letter and the mission checklist control the next step.

Government-funded participation changes by level and cycle. The current POSTECH undergraduate page, for example, says its 2027 GKS-U participation is Embassy Track only. The GKS routes for Indian applicants compare that level-specific participation with India’s current allocation.

Should you choose SKY or the science institutes?

Choose KAIST or POSTECH first for English-medium science or engineering, and choose the wider SKY department range first for economics, law, humanities or broader subject choice. The tradeoff is subject breadth against a more explicit English graduate environment.

KAIST’s current graduate rules contain a valuable India-specific exception. An Indian citizen who completed a bachelor’s degree or higher in India with English as the medium of instruction may request an English-test waiver. You must submit a university certificate confirming the medium. Citizenship alone isn’t enough.

POSTECH’s current Spring 2027 graduate guide doesn’t put India on its automatic country exemption list. It does, however, accept a medium-of-instruction certificate as an alternative to a test score. That means an Indian applicant may still avoid IELTS or TOEFL, but through document evidence rather than KAIST’s country-linked waiver. The exact thresholds and the January 2026 TOEFL scale change sit beside funding in the South Korea graduate routes. Neither document route applies to undergraduate admission.

Funding can reverse the apparent tuition comparison. KAIST says all international undergraduates receive fully funded tuition for four years, a monthly stipend and national health insurance. POSTECH gives all admitted undergraduates a first-semester full tuition waiver and continues it for up to eight semesters when the previous-semester GPA is at least 3.0 out of 4.3.

For research degrees, the published South Korean funding routes show why laboratory and supervisor terms matter alongside the university name.

What do these universities charge?

Published undergraduate tuition in this comparison runs from 2,442,000 KRW per semester at SNU for humanities to 8,416,000 KRW for Yonsei UIC’s first semester. The figures below are per semester and show entrance-fee or scholarship differences that affect direct comparison. The bill issued for your intake controls payment.

University and level Published 2026 tuition (KRW per semester) Official basis
SNU undergraduate 2,442,000 KRW for humanities or business, 2,998,000 KRW for engineering Fall 2026 international admission guide
Korea University undergraduate About 5,800,000 KRW for humanities and social sciences, about 7,700,000 KRW for engineering 2026 tuition page, subject to change
Hanyang undergraduate 5,279,000 KRW for humanities and social sciences, 6,960,000 KRW for engineering Spring 2027 admission guide, using Fall 2026 fees
SKKU undergraduate 5,182,000 KRW tuition for humanities, social sciences and business, or 6,792,000 KRW for engineering, plus a 198,000 KRW one-time entrance fee Spring 2027 guide, based on first-semester 2026 fees
Yonsei undergraduate International freshmen enter GLC, with 7,388,000 KRW in the first semester. Later listed rates include 4,590,000 KRW for business and 6,004,000 KRW for engineering 2026 international undergraduate fee sheet
Yonsei UIC undergraduate 8,416,000 KRW in the first semester, then 8,202,000 KRW UIC 2026 tuition page
KAIST undergraduate 3,433,000 KRW published tuition. KAIST separately states that admitted international undergraduates receive four years of tuition funding 2026 university tuition decision

Korea University’s official tuition page publishes approximate 2026 figures and says they are subject to change. Yonsei’s fee sheet places international freshmen in the Global Basic Education Division under Global Leaders College for one year, so the first-semester GLC figure must be used before the later college rate.

Hanyang’s 2027 guide also updates the scholarship picture. The Hanyang International Scholarship Programme (HISP) awards 100%, 70% or 50% tuition reductions to selected freshmen for eight semesters, subject to a minimum 2.5 GPA each semester. Its separate English proficiency award is 30% for the first semester at TOEFL iBT 90 or IELTS 6.5.

SKKU’s 2027 guide keeps the first-semester language awards. TOPIK 6 earns a 100% waiver and TOPIK 5 earns 50%. IELTS 8.0 or the stated TOEFL equivalent earns 100%, while IELTS 7.0 or the lower stated TOEFL equivalent earns 50%. These awards can change by intake, so use them as current planning evidence only.

POSTECH’s undergraduate scholarship page is more direct. Every admitted undergraduate receives a first-semester full tuition waiver. Continued support can run for eight regular semesters with the required GPA. The 500,000 KRW monthly living allowance and airfare reimbursement shown there are specifically labelled for the Fall 2026 international admissions cycle, so don’t assume them for Spring 2027 without confirmation.

Will you need Korean after admission?

You may need Korean after admission even when an English score secured the offer. Korea University, Hanyang, SKKU and Yonsei publish conditions that can delay degree study, restrict major classes or add a graduation requirement.

Korea University’s 2027 guide links TOPIK to course access. Students below Level 5 face mandatory Korean training and major-course restrictions, while Level 3 or lower prevents major-course enrolment. The detailed level cut-offs are covered in the TOPIK decision guide.

“Admitted students must meet the Korean Language Proficiency Standards before beginning their degree programs.”

Hanyang University, Spring 2027 admission guide

Hanyang may admit a Korean Track applicant before the language standard is met, but degree study requires TOPIK 4 or Level 4 at Hanyang’s Institute of International Education (IIE). English Track applicants are exempt. A Korean Track offer can therefore precede permission to begin degree classes.

SKKU also separates its tracks. Korean Track students need TOPIK 4 for major selection or sophomore major courses and TOPIK 5 for graduation, subject to department variations. Its English Track students don’t need TOPIK for major placement, major registration or graduation.

Yonsei’s 2027 international guide requires TOPIK 3 before entering the major and TOPIK 4 before graduation for the international and Global Leaders College (GLC) tracks. UIC follows its own English-language curriculum, so the regular international-track rule cannot be carried across to UIC without checking the college policy.

Which Spring 2027 applications are open?

Spring 2027 applications do not share one national window. The table separates each university’s online application period from its status on 10 August 2026, so an already-closed SNU round is not mistaken for an upcoming intake.

University and level Status on August 10, 2026 Application window
Korea University undergraduate Open August 3 to 31, 2026
SKKU undergraduate, round 1 Opens August 12 August 12 to 21, 2026
POSTECH undergraduate Opens August 25 August 25 to September 2, 2026
Yonsei UIC undergraduate Opens August 26 The page shows September 17 in its deadline row and September 22 in its application window
Hanyang undergraduate Opens September 1 September 1 to 18, 2026
KAIST undergraduate, early Opens September 22 September 22 to October 22, 2026
Seoul National University Closed July 6 to 9, 2026

Yonsei UIC’s own page is internally inconsistent. One row calls September 17 the online deadline, while the displayed application period runs to September 22. Work to September 17 and ask UIC to confirm. A later date on the same page isn’t a safe reason to wait.

Hanyang’s Spring 2027 guide sets the online window from 1 September at 10 AM to 18 September at 5 PM KST. Postal documents must arrive by 30 September, and results are due on 18 December 2026.

The windows overlap closely. SKKU closes four days before POSTECH opens, while Yonsei UIC, Hanyang and KAIST open within the following four weeks. The relevant recommendations, transcripts, apostilles and language evidence therefore have to be ready before the first suitable portal opens.

Why aren’t QS ranks listed?

QS ranks are not listed because an undated or copied position can outlive the edition it describes, while the exact programme language, curriculum, fees and Korean conditions decide whether an option is workable. If rank matters to your shortlist, use the current QS table immediately before applying and keep it as one input rather than a substitute for the programme checks above.

Key takeaways

  • English provision is programme-specific. KAIST and POSTECH publish broad graduate English policies, while Yonsei UIC, SKKU and Hanyang identify particular undergraduate options.
  • Korea University’s official page now publishes approximate 2026 undergraduate tuition of 5,800,000 KRW for humanities and social sciences and 7,700,000 KRW for engineering.
  • KAIST’s India-specific English-test waiver applies to graduate admission and needs both an eligible degree completed in India and a medium-of-instruction certificate.
  • Hanyang’s Spring 2027 undergraduate application is now published for September 1 to 18, with postal documents due September 30.
  • Korean Track conditions can delay or restrict major study. Hanyang requires TOPIK 4 before degree study, while Korea University limits major access below TOPIK 5.
  • Use the earlier September 17 date for Yonsei UIC until the college resolves the two closing dates shown on its own application page.

Frequently asked questions

Which South Korean universities teach in English?

KAIST and POSTECH publish broad English policies for international graduate study. Yonsei UIC is an English-language undergraduate college. SKKU and Hanyang list named English Track departments. For SNU, Korea University and regular Yonsei programmes, check the current department curriculum rather than assuming the whole degree is taught in English.

What are the SKY universities in South Korea?

SKY is the common label for Seoul National University, Korea University and Yonsei University. The label tells you which institutions people group together, but it doesn’t settle your choice. Teaching language, course availability, tuition and post-admission Korean rules can differ sharply across the three universities and across departments.

How much is SNU tuition for international students?

SNU’s Fall 2026 international undergraduate guide lists 2,442,000 KRW per semester for humanities and business and 2,998,000 KRW for engineering. These are published planning figures, not a future fee guarantee. Confirm the amount on your admission notice and include housing, insurance and other living costs separately.

Is KAIST or POSTECH better for an Indian student?

Choose by level and subject. Both are strong first checks for science and engineering. KAIST gives eligible Indian graduate applicants a documented English-test waiver route. POSTECH publishes lower graduate test minimums and strong undergraduate tuition support. Compare the exact laboratory, supervisor, curriculum and scholarship terms before deciding.

Can you study in South Korea without knowing Korean?

Yes, in a genuinely English programme, but admission through an international route isn’t enough. KAIST and POSTECH publish graduate English policies, while Yonsei UIC and named SKKU or Hanyang tracks offer undergraduate options. Korean Track students can face TOPIK conditions for major access, course registration or graduation.

When do Spring 2027 applications open?

Korea University undergraduate applications are open on August 10, 2026. SKKU opens August 12, POSTECH undergraduate August 25, Yonsei UIC August 26, Hanyang September 1 and KAIST undergraduate September 22. Graduate calendars use separate university notices. Check KST times and document-arrival deadlines separately.

Why are there no QS ranks in this comparison?

The page doesn’t print a rank unless the exact QS edition and date can be checked directly. Rankings also don’t answer whether your compulsory courses are in English, whether you meet the Korean conditions or what you will pay. Verify current QS data separately and use it as one input.
