MBZUAI’s current funded international PhD package lists AED 17,500 a month, free tuition and other benefits, but continued support depends on an adviser match and satisfactory progress. A PhD in Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE can instead be partially funded or entirely fee-paying. The MBZUAI graduate funding model shows why the written offer decides which position an applicant has.

Entry rules also differ. Khalifa University postgraduate admissions accepts a direct PhD route from a relevant bachelor’s degree at 3.5 out of 4.0 with GRE Quantitative 150, while its regular route requires relevant bachelor’s and master’s degrees. The useful comparison is the entry route, exact programme accreditation and usable funding after deductions, not the university name alone.

Which UAE PhD route should you choose?

Research fit and the entry route shape the shortlist. A specialised AI doctorate at MBZUAI, an engineering doctorate at Khalifa University and a systems-management doctorate at American University of Sharjah do not select the same profile. One national list of “best PhD universities” hides the subject match, credit load and funding conditions that decide whether an application is realistic.

Route Prior degree position Normal study shape Financial question
Direct bachelor’s to PhD Exceptional relevant bachelor’s record and any programme-specific test More coursework before dissertation research Does funding cover the longer credit load and every study year?
Master’s-entry PhD Relevant bachelor’s and master’s qualifications Advanced coursework, examinations and dissertation research Is the award full, partial or assistantship-linked?
Adviser-linked research PhD Degree and research background for the named field Research programme with an adviser or faculty funding relationship When must the adviser match be confirmed?
Fee-paying doctorate Programme admission requirements Full-time or part-time, depending on the programme What is the total tuition and is any PhD discount actually available?
Global or joint fellowship Requirements of the awarding university and UAE research site Study may move between locations or faculty groups Which institution awards the degree and which entity funds residence?

Khalifa’s direct PhD in Engineering shows why the route changes more than eligibility. Its structure has at least 72 credits, including 36 dissertation credits, coursework, a written qualifying examination and a research proposal examination. A master’s waiver therefore brings a larger taught and examination load into the doctorate.

AUS offers another variation. Its PhD in Engineering Systems Management accepts full-time and part-time study and may consider a direct applicant with a strong relevant engineering bachelor’s degree. A working professional may value the format, while an applicant who needs full funding should examine the assistantship and scholarship position separately.

Which current programmes deserve a closer look?

The examples below show different research and funding models. They are not a ranking. Doctoral titles, tracks and intake availability can change in the live programme directory.

Institution Research position Entry feature Funding position to verify
Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence Specialised AI and related research programmes Programme-specific STEM preparation, research statement, references, screening and interview Year 1 central PhD funding, then adviser-funded subject to match and progress
Khalifa University Engineering, computing, science and health research Regular and selected direct PhD routes Competitive scholarship tier and any tuition deduction from stipend
American University of Sharjah Engineering Systems Management and other listed doctoral study Master’s-entry and a selective direct engineering route Assistantship or competitive scholarship confirmed in writing
United Arab Emirates University Doctoral study across its graduate colleges General graduate policy plus college-specific conditions Graduate research scholarship, fellowship or other written support
University of Sharjah Research programmes across several fields Programme and graduate-admission rules Research or teaching assistant scholarship threshold and benefits
NYU Abu Dhabi Selected global PhD programmes and fellowships Apply through the named NYU programme or fellowship process Location, fellowship terms and degree-awarding structure
University of Dubai Named doctoral programmes in its current catalogue Programme-specific admissions General university discounts currently exclude PhD students

NYU Abu Dhabi’s graduate directory includes PhD opportunities in science, engineering, computer science and psychology. Its Computer Science Global PhD Fellowship from Fall 2026 forms part of NYU’s single Computer Science PhD programme across faculty in New York and Abu Dhabi. The named fellowship page, rather than an ordinary local university process, controls that application.

If your decision is still country-wide, use the UAE university comparison to understand Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. Return to the exact doctorate before making any accreditation or funding decision.

Can an Indian graduate qualify for a UAE PhD?

Yes, if the university accepts the Indian qualification as relevant and equivalent and the applicant meets every programme condition. There is no single UAE-wide GPA, GRE or English threshold for all doctorates. The useful check has four parts.

Four-part eligibility resultClear each line for the exact programme, not for the country in general.
Check What to match Evidence
Degree level Direct bachelor’s route or required master’s-entry route Final certificates and complete transcripts
Subject fit Relevant discipline, prerequisite courses and research preparation Course list, thesis, projects and research outputs
Academic threshold Programme GPA plus any GRE or English score University grading record and accepted test result
Research selection Statement, references, adviser fit and interview Research question, methods evidence and referee letters

Khalifa’s regular route currently asks for at least 3.0 out of 4.0 in a relevant bachelor’s degree and 3.25 in a relevant master’s degree. Its direct route asks for 3.5 in the bachelor’s degree and GRE Quantitative 150. Both routes list IELTS Academic 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 91 unless an approved exemption applies, plus referee recommendations, a statement of purpose, a research statement and an interview.

AUS uses a different set of doctoral requirements. Its doctoral application page asks for three references, including at least two from an academic adviser or faculty member, and a statement of purpose of about 1,500 words. Published English routes include IELTS Academic 6.5 and TOEFL iBT 80, but a programme can add its own conditions.

An Indian percentage does not have a universal self-conversion to a UAE GPA. The institution’s grading scale supports the university’s assessment, and admissions can provide a written decision where the threshold is unclear. A strong degree title cannot repair a missing prerequisite, and a high GRE score cannot replace a required master’s degree unless the programme publishes a direct route.

What does a funded PhD offer really cover?

A funded offer can contain tuition, stipend, housing, health insurance, visa processing, travel and research support in different combinations. Each component has its own coverage and renewal condition. A full tuition scholarship with no living allowance is not the same as a stipend-funded research place.

MBZUAI’s graduate funding model is built on a partnership between the University and faculty advisors.MBZUAI graduate admission process

That partnership wording matters because funding isn’t only an admissions decision. Khalifa describes highly competitive, merit-based PhD scholarships whose benefits may include full or partial tuition, stipend, accommodation, insurance, visa processing, travel, conference support and an international research internship. It doesn’t promise one identical package to every admitted international doctoral student.

MBZUAI currently gives a more explicit PhD funding transition. Year 1 is centrally funded while the student matches with a faculty adviser. Funding moves to the adviser’s source by the start of Year 2. The guarantee depends on a confirmed adviser match and satisfactory progress. For a funded international PhD student, the current package lists free tuition, AED 17,500 a month, one annual return flight, health insurance and sponsored residence visa and Emirates ID where eligible.

The headline stipend isn’t automatically spare cash. MBZUAI says its displayed amount includes housing support and students pay housing directly. It also says external scholarships normally replace the university stipend instead of being paid on top. Khalifa’s fee guidance says tuition assessed to an international Tier 3 research-path student is deducted monthly from the stipend during the assessed semester.

Offer line What to confirm Risk if unclear
Tuition coverage Full, partial, number of credits and duration A scholarship label may leave a large fee balance
Monthly stipend Gross amount, payment months and any tuition deduction The usable monthly amount can be lower than the headline
Housing Provided room, separate allowance or included in stipend Counting the same benefit twice produces a false budget
Health insurance Student only or family, and the covered period Dependants can create an unplanned cost
Residence sponsorship University sponsor, fees and renewal condition Admission alone does not finish residence formalities
Travel support One-time, annual, reimbursed or booked by the university An expected flight benefit may not be cash
Research support Conference, equipment and approval limits Research funds may not pay personal expenses
Renewal CGPA, milestones, adviser match and conduct Funding may change before the doctorate ends

How much funding can you actually use each month?

Net support is more useful than the largest stipend. The calculation below uses only the written offer and a realistic housing quote.

Usable monthly funding = confirmed stipend minus tuition deducted monthly, housing paid from stipend, mandatory insurance shortfall and recurring university charges

Suppose an offer states AED 17,500 a month, with housing paid by the student at AED 4,500 and no tuition deduction. Before food, transport and personal expenses, usable support is AED 13,000. If another award states AED 12,000 plus university housing and full tuition, its practical value can be better even though the stipend looks smaller.

Funding confidence testUse the written award, not a marketing summary or an older student package.
Result What is confirmed Decision
Bankable Tuition, monthly cash, housing treatment, duration and renewal conditions Compare net support with your full household budget
Incomplete Scholarship named, but one major cost or renewal rule is missing Ask for the missing term in writing before accepting
Unfunded assumption Admission offered with no written scholarship or assistantship Budget it as fee-paying until funding is formally added

The result belongs beside the cost of living in Dubai and the UAE. Family costs remain separate because a student package may cover only the doctoral candidate.

How do you verify a UAE PhD programme?

Programme verification has two checks. The first is the institution in the applicable federal or local-authority register. The second is the exact doctoral programme and its current accreditation status. A university name in a directory does not prove that every programme or delivery site has the same status.

Federal Decree-Law No. 31 of 2025 distinguishes Institutional Licensure from Program Accreditation and applies to higher education institutions, including those in free zones. The MoHESR licensed-institution register and the CAA accredited-programme register provide the applicable federal checks.

  1. Search the institution’s legal name and campus.
  2. Open the exact PhD title in the programme register.
  3. Check that the status is current, not inactive, revoked or tied to another location.
  4. Save a dated screenshot or PDF for the application file.
  5. Ask the university in writing if the register wording and offer title differ.

For Dubai providers, also check the relevant KHDA directory or permit information. For Abu Dhabi, use ADEK’s authorised-institution list where relevant. Local listing and federal programme status answer different questions, so one should not be used as a substitute for the other. The broader UAE universities page explains these layers in detail.

What should an Indian applicant do about attestation and recognition?

Attestation and Qualification Recognition remain separate. Attestation authenticates the document chain. Qualification Recognition is the current MoHESR process for a higher education qualification obtained outside the UAE.

MoHESR’s current Qualification Recognition service begins with degree verification by an authorised partner, followed by the ministry application. Some university pages still use the older phrase Certificate of Equivalency, so ask whether the current Recognition report satisfies the offer condition.

AUS tells overseas-qualified doctoral applicants to provide certified transcripts and graduation certificates and describes a country-of-origin chain involving the authorised educational authority, foreign ministry and UAE Embassy. The exact India route should be checked through the UAE certificate attestation and recognition guide and the university’s live instructions.

Document task Purpose Starting authority
India-issued degree attestation Authenticate the official document for UAE use India’s required authentication route, then UAE Embassy and UAE MoFA process
Degree verification Confirm the qualification with the awarding institution MoHESR-authorised verification partner
Qualification Recognition Obtain the UAE recognition report MoHESR after partner verification
University admission assessment Judge subject relevance and academic strength The doctoral admissions committee

The timeline needs enough room for the Indian university to answer verification requests. A digitally attested certificate does not by itself prove research fit, and a Recognition report does not guarantee admission to one doctorate.

How should you build a competitive application?

Build one evidence map for each programme. Put every mandatory criterion in the first column and the document or example that proves it in the second. If one mandatory item has no evidence, resolve it before spending time on the statement.

Selection question Strong evidence Weak substitute
Can you handle the subject? Relevant advanced courses, thesis and research output A broad degree title alone
Can you use the required methods? Named project, data, code, laboratory or field method A list of software without a result
Is the proposed question viable? Defined gap, method, expected contribution and faculty connection A broad topic with no research problem
Can referees assess your research? Faculty who supervised substantial academic work Senior contacts who barely know the work
Does an adviser fit exist? Two or three faculty links based on recent research themes A mass email asking for any funded position
Can you explain the project? Clear account of choices, limits and next questions Memorised technical vocabulary

Khalifa currently asks for a 500 to 1,000 word research statement linked to its research priorities. AUS asks for a statement of purpose of about 1,500 words. MBZUAI includes a research statement for PhD applicants and can use screening and technical interviews. One reusable essay cannot satisfy these different purposes without careful rewriting.

  1. Weeks 1 and 2. Choose two research themes and verify exact programmes.
  2. Weeks 3 and 4. Map degree, grades, tests, methods and prerequisites.
  3. Weeks 5 and 6. Read faculty research and draft programme-specific questions.
  4. Weeks 7 and 8. Prepare transcripts, certificates, references, CV and research samples.
  5. Weeks 9 and 10. Write the required statement in the university’s format.
  6. Weeks 11 and 12. Audit funding terms, submit and retain proof of every uploaded file.

If you need a qualifying postgraduate degree first, compare master’s programmes in Dubai and the UAE. A research thesis and relevant methods may be more valuable for a later PhD application than a general course with a better-known label.

Does a PhD lead to residence and work in the UAE?

The university can sponsor a student residence permit. Dubai uses GDRFA services, while the federal route outside Dubai uses ICP. The residence application follows the sponsor’s instructions and can involve entry status, medical fitness, Emirates ID and insurance steps. The UAE student residence guide sets out the current route.

A student residence permit does not itself authorise employment. A qualifying student job or training arrangement needs the applicable MoHRE permit and employer process. Assistantship duties that form part of the university offer should be documented by the institution.

The UAE does not publish an automatic visa named a post-study work visa. After study, possible routes include a jobseeker visit visa, employer-sponsored work residence, Green Residence or Golden Residence when the graduate meets that route’s conditions. None is a benefit guaranteed by PhD admission.

Before accepting, ask who sponsors residence, which fees the scholarship pays, when sponsorship ends and whether dependants are supported. The answer belongs beside funding because visa processing and insurance can change the usable value of an offer.

Key takeaways

  • A UAE PhD can be fully funded, partially funded or fee-paying. Only the written offer settles your position.
  • Direct bachelor’s-to-PhD routes exist, but they carry higher entry thresholds and a larger coursework load.
  • MBZUAI’s current PhD funding moves from central Year 1 support to adviser funding, subject to a confirmed match and satisfactory progress.
  • Compare usable stipend after tuition deductions and housing, not the largest headline amount.
  • Verify both the institution and the exact doctoral programme in the applicable live registers.
  • Attestation, degree verification and Qualification Recognition are separate document tasks.
  • A student residence permit does not create an automatic right to work or a guaranteed post-study route.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for a PhD in the UAE after a bachelor’s degree?

Yes, but only where the exact programme publishes a direct route. Khalifa University currently asks direct applicants for a relevant bachelor’s GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0 and GRE Quantitative 150. AUS also considers a selective direct engineering route. Most applicants should not assume every doctorate waives a master’s degree.

Is a PhD in Dubai fully funded for Indian students?

Some offers are fully funded, but Dubai and the UAE do not have one universal PhD package. Funding can combine tuition, stipend, housing, insurance and residence support in different ways. An Indian applicant should treat admission as fee-paying until the university issues a written scholarship, fellowship or assistantship with amount and duration.

How much stipend does MBZUAI pay international PhD students?

The current graduate funding page lists AED 17,500 a month for a funded international PhD student, including housing support. It also states that Year 1 is centrally funded and later funding requires an adviser match and satisfactory progress. Recheck the live page and the award letter for your intake before budgeting.

Do UAE PhD programmes require GRE?

There is no country-wide GRE rule. Khalifa University’s direct PhD route currently requires GRE Quantitative 150 and does not accept the GRE Home Edition for that route. Other programmes may omit GRE or use different selection evidence. Read the exact admissions page instead of applying one university’s test rule nationally.

Do I need UAE degree equivalency for an Indian master’s?

The current government process is called Qualification Recognition. Some university pages still use the older phrase Certificate of Equivalency. Ask the university whether it requires attestation, the MoHESR Recognition report or both. Degree verification through an authorised partner comes before the current ministry recognition application.

Can I work while doing a PhD in the UAE?

A student residence permit alone does not authorise employment. Student training or work needs the applicable MoHRE permit and employer process. A university assistantship should be recorded in the admission or funding documents. Confirm outside work with the university because scholarship, research and attendance conditions can restrict it.

Is there a UAE post-study work visa after a PhD?

The UAE does not publish an automatic graduate visa named a post-study work visa. A graduate may use another route if eligible, such as a jobseeker visit visa, employer-sponsored work residence, Green Residence or Golden Residence. Each has separate conditions, so PhD admission does not guarantee later residence.
