Khalifa University’s current international undergraduate tiers range from 100% tuition coverage to textbooks only, while MBZUAI lists AED 17,500 a month for a funded international PhD student. These aren’t parts of one UAE scholarship scheme. Each university sets its own coverage, selection and renewal rules.
Indian applicants don’t qualify for the federal MoHESR scholarship programme, which is exclusively for UAE nationals. Their routes are university merit awards, need-based aid, tuition discounts and funded graduate research places. A full tuition award doesn’t automatically pay housing, food, insurance or travel.
What does scholarship mean in Dubai and the UAE?
The word covers four different financial offers. A branch-campus discount can reduce tuition after an applicant pays a deposit. A merit scholarship can be selective and renewable. Need-based aid uses family financial documents. Research funding can join tuition, stipend, insurance and residence sponsorship but carry adviser, assistantship or progress conditions.
| Funding type | What it normally changes | What it may not cover | Selection evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic tuition discount | A fixed amount or percentage of course fees | Housing, food, insurance and travel | Offer acceptance, deposit or published grade band |
| Competitive merit scholarship | Part or all of tuition, sometimes extra benefits | Anything outside the written package | Grades, programme fit, achievements and limited award slots |
| Need-based institutional aid | Part of the demonstrated gap between resources and attendance cost | Costs beyond the assessed budget | Family income, assets and financial-aid forms |
| Funded research place | Tuition and a stipend, sometimes housing, insurance, travel and residence | Dependants, personal costs and support beyond the funded period | Academic merit, research fit, adviser or assistantship and progress |
The funding label isn’t enough for comparison. An advertised 50% scholarship at a high-fee university can leave a larger bill than a 20% award at a lower-fee university. The useful number is net annual cost after the applicant’s confirmed award.
The distinction appears in the primary pages themselves. Khalifa University publishes tuition tiers for international undergraduates, NYU Abu Dhabi calculates need through the CSS Profile and MBZUAI links research benefits to a funding model. Calling all three a percentage scholarship would remove the feature that decides the student’s budget.
| Result | Coverage | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Comparable | Actual tuition amount, non-tuition benefits and payment schedule are stated | Duration and renewal rules are written |
| Incomplete | A maximum percentage is advertised but the applicant’s award isn’t confirmed | One renewal or living-cost term is missing |
| Not bankable | Admission offered with no written financial award | The applicant is assuming funding from a general university page |
Which undergraduate scholarships accept international students?
The strongest current routes use different selection models. Khalifa University assesses international students for scholarship tiers inside admission. NYU Abu Dhabi accepts need-based aid applications from all citizenships. American University of Sharjah combines a competitive international President’s Scholarship with separate financial grants. UOWD publishes limited tuition awards for new bachelor’s students.
| University route | Current coverage | Application method | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Khalifa University international tiers | Tier I full tuition, then 75%, 50% or 25% tuition, while Tier V lists textbooks only | Automatic assessment with admission, no separate scholarship form | Limited slots and no guarantee from meeting admission criteria |
| NYU Abu Dhabi need-based aid | Institutional support based on demonstrated financial need | CSS Profile by the admission round’s financial-aid deadline | Family financial assessment, not an automatic merit award |
| AUS President’s Scholarship | Full tuition and lab fees, application fee waiver, stipend, housing, three return tickets and medical insurance | Competitive application for eligible international school-leavers | Students must complete secondary education outside the UAE and begin in the fall |
| AUS financial grant | Amount based on need and academic qualifications, with possible partial shared-room support | Separate grant application after admission | No fixed award amount before assessment |
| UOWD bachelor merit scholarship | Limited 15%, 25% or 50% tuition awards each trimester | Separate scholarship form and documents | First come, first served and excludes living costs |
Khalifa University’s undergraduate page says international applicants are mapped to a tier using academic merit and other factors aligned with university priorities. The scholarship is considered within admission. The offer letter, rather than the top tier shown online, tells the applicant what was awarded.
At NYU Abu Dhabi, citizenship doesn’t bar an applicant from requesting financial support. The NYUAD financial-aid page uses the CSS Profile and calculates demonstrated need from the family information supplied.
New undergraduate applicants who submit the CSS Profile by the required financial aid deadline and demonstrate financial need, will be notified of their financial aid eligibility.NYU Abu Dhabi
That process is structurally different from a marks table. The applicant must plan parent and household financial documents alongside the admission application. Early Decision also reduces the ability to compare offers from other universities, although NYUAD says students can be released if the estimated package doesn’t enable attendance.
The AUS funding page gives another two-track choice. The President’s Scholarship has an extensive named package for eligible international school-leavers, while the financial grant depends on need and academic qualifications. One student can therefore be academically eligible for admission but still need a separate grant decision.
Indian board students also have transparent tuition-award examples. UOWD currently lists CBSE and Indian state-board minimums of 80%, 85% and 95% for its displayed 15%, 25% and 50% categories. Meeting the marks only permits consideration because award numbers are limited.
Where can master’s and PhD applicants find funding?
Graduate funding ranges from a fee reduction to a research package. Master’s applicants encounter more fee-paying routes than PhD applicants at research universities. The offer should therefore state whether funding is automatic, competitive, assistantship-linked or absent.
| Route | Current position | Offer question |
|---|---|---|
| MBZUAI PhD | Year 1 central funding, then adviser funding subject to confirmed match and satisfactory progress | Which adviser and funding source support Year 2 onward? |
| MBZUAI MSc | Fee-paying by default, with merit funding or faculty-sponsored research or teaching assistantship possible | Does the admission letter explicitly confirm funding? |
| MBZUAI MAAI | Fee-based and not eligible for university or faculty-sponsored funding | What is the full 34-credit tuition and living budget? |
| Khalifa University master’s | Eligible applicants indicate interest in competitive scholarship support | Which tier and benefits appear in the written award? |
| Khalifa University PhD | Competitive merit funding can include full or partial tuition and other benefits | Is tuition deducted from stipend under the assigned tier? |
| AUS graduate assistantship | Teaching or research assistantship routes for selected graduate students | What work, tuition support, stipend and renewal condition apply? |
MBZUAI’s current graduate funding model corrects an older blanket assumption. MSc study is fee-paying by default unless the offer provides merit funding, a faculty-sponsored research or teaching assistantship or an approved government scholarship for an eligible UAE national. MAAI remains a fee-based programme outside university or faculty-sponsored funding.
For a funded international student, the current MBZUAI table lists AED 15,500 a month for MSc and AED 17,500 for PhD, with tuition, annual return airfare, health insurance and sponsored UAE residence documents among the benefits. The amount includes housing support, so housing isn’t a second free benefit to add to the stipend.
PhD continuation also needs attention. MBZUAI funds Year 1 centrally while the student matches with an adviser, then moves support to that adviser by Year 2. External scholarships normally replace the university stipend instead of adding to it. The UAE PhD guide compares usable funding after these conditions.
Khalifa University’s current postgraduate page describes competitive merit awards rather than promising one package to every admit. Master’s applicants indicate scholarship interest inside their application. Doctoral benefits depend on the award, and the university’s fee guidance can deduct assessed tuition from a Tier 3 research student’s stipend.
Master’s applicants choosing between a scholarship and a lower-fee course can compare both in the UAE master’s programme guide. A large percentage is useful only after the base tuition, required credits and award duration are known.
How do Dubai university discounts differ from scholarships?
Dubai branch campuses often use scholarship language for tuition reductions assessed during admission. These can make a programme more affordable, but they aren’t normally full living-cost packages. Residence status, deposit timing and stacking rules can decide eligibility.
| University | Current example | Applicant position | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| University of Birmingham Dubai | Academic merit awards up to 30% per year | Automatic review after conditional offer acceptance and deposit | Standard campus scholarships are partial, and some awards can’t combine |
| Heriot-Watt University Dubai | Postgraduate merit awards of 10% or 15% | Course application and tuition deposit | Tuition reduction only, with current country grade bands |
| Heriot-Watt time-limited offer | AED 6,000 Future Made for Success award shown for 2026 | Application and deposit before the stated closing date | Expired after 31 July 2026 unless renewed |
| Middlesex University Dubai | International Study Grant for all programme levels | Application, offer acceptance and AED 3,000 deposit | No single international value published, and awards are discretionary |
| UOWD | Separate bachelor and graduate tuition scholarship routes | Scholarship form and intake deadline | Limited inventory and exclusions beyond tuition |
The University of Birmingham Dubai automatically reviews conditional offers for current scholarships after acceptance and the deposit condition. Its standard academic excellence awards run up to 30%, and its FAQ says the campus doesn’t provide a standard fully funded scholarship. Invitation-only exceptions shouldn’t be presented as the normal route.
Heriot-Watt’s current postgraduate merit matrix includes Indian degree thresholds. It displays 10% at CGPA 7 out of 10 or 70%, and 15% at CGPA 7.5 or 75%. The award reduces tuition and doesn’t create a living allowance.
Middlesex distinguishes applicants studying in the UAE from international applicants. Its published Academic Excellence Scholarship marks grid is for UAE-based applicants, while applicants from India use the International Study Grant route. A scholarship table tied to UAE residence doesn’t apply merely because the course is in Dubai.
Which scholarship applications are automatic?
Funding opportunities are lost in different ways. An automatic award can depend on a deposit. A need-based award can share the admission deadline. A research offer can depend on an adviser. The application calendar needs a separate funding-action column.
| Application type | Examples | Failure mode |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic admission assessment | Khalifa undergraduate tiers, Birmingham Dubai merit review | Assuming the maximum award before the written offer |
| Interest marked in admission form | Khalifa master’s scholarship interest | Submitting admission without the funding indication |
| Separate scholarship form | UOWD merit award, AUS President’s Scholarship | Meeting admission but missing the funding deadline |
| Separate financial-aid form | NYUAD CSS Profile, AUS financial grant | Incomplete family financial evidence |
| Faculty or assistantship match | MBZUAI graduate funding, AUS assistantship | Admission with no named or confirmed funding source |
| Deposit-triggered discount | Several Dubai branch-campus offers | Paying before the net award and refund terms are understood |
The sequence changes the cash-flow risk. Birmingham confirms assessment after conditional offer acceptance and the AED 5,000 deposit condition. Middlesex secures its applicable grant after offer acceptance and an AED 3,000 deposit. An applicant comparing several universities needs the refund terms and award timing before paying each deposit.
A need-based application starts earlier. NYUAD’s current CSS Profile deadlines are tied to Early Decision I, Early Decision II and Regular Decision. The aid result arrives with admission when the file was submitted by the required deadline. Waiting for an offer before beginning the Profile would miss that structure.
The NYUAD aid calendar shows why a separate scholarship column belongs beside every admission task. An automatic merit review has no extra essay, yet its deposit deadline can still control the award. A separate financial-aid form can share the admission deadline. A faculty-funded place can remain uncertain after academic admission. These aren’t administrative details because each one changes whether a valid offer is affordable.
How much does the scholarship really save?
The award percentage is applied to the eligible tuition base, not automatically to every charge. Mandatory fees, housing, food, transport, insurance, residence and travel remain unless the package names them.
Net annual study cost = tuition after the confirmed award plus mandatory fees, housing, food, transport, insurance and residence costs minus any confirmed stipend
Suppose University A charges AED 100,000 and awards 30% tuition support. Tuition after the award is AED 70,000. University B charges AED 70,000 and awards 15%, leaving AED 59,500. The smaller scholarship percentage produces the lower tuition bill. The UAE student cost guide supplies the separate living budget.
NYU Abu Dhabi’s cost page shows why need-based aid needs the full attendance budget. Its 2026 to 2027 estimated total cost of attendance is USD 90,442 before aid, combining direct and indirect categories. The institutional assessment considers family need against that broader budget, rather than offering a simple marks percentage.
The same method prevents a misleading branch-campus comparison. One programme can exclude registration, textbooks and residence processing from the scholarship base, while another applies a smaller percentage across all taught years. A one-year discount is also weaker than the same percentage renewed for three years. Net cost therefore needs the eligible fee base, number of funded years and every mandatory charge, not only the percentage printed in an advertisement.
For research funding, the monthly calculation matters. A stipend that includes housing support shouldn’t also count university housing as free. A Khalifa tier with tuition deducted from stipend needs the deduction in the cash plan. An outside fellowship that replaces the MBZUAI stipend can’t be added as a second monthly income source.
How should an Indian student build a scholarship plan?
A strong funding shortlist begins with eligibility, then moves to application method and net cost. University legitimacy and the exact programme status belong before any deposit. The UAE university accreditation guide explains the institution and programme checks.
- Each shortlisted programme receives its own full tuition, credits and mandatory-fees record.
- Every award is labelled automatic, separate-form, need-based, assistantship-linked or deposit-triggered.
- Citizenship, degree level, place of residence and intake conditions are matched to the applicant.
- The funding deadline sits beside the admission deadline.
- The written offer supplies the actual award, coverage, duration and renewal conditions.
- Net annual cost is calculated with living costs and any confirmed stipend.
- Deposits are compared with refund terms and award-confirmation timing.
Academic evidence and financial evidence belong in different folders. Merit applications need transcripts, achievements, statements and references where requested. Need-based aid needs household income and asset documents. Research funding needs faculty fit, methods, thesis or project evidence and a clear understanding of assistantship work.
Renewal can change the final cost more than the first-year percentage. CGPA, full-time enrolment, conduct, research progress and adviser matching can continue or end an award. The four-year budget should therefore use the published renewal rule, not assume an entry scholarship remains unchanged.
Two written comparisons make the final choice easier. The first uses the university’s undiscounted cost and subtracts only the award confirmed for the applicant. The second stress-tests the next year at full tuition if the renewal condition isn’t met. A family that can fund only the scholarship scenario carries more risk than one whose plan survives a lower renewal tier or a short payment delay.
The final funding file also keeps the scholarship email, offer letter, deposit receipt and published terms together. If a percentage, payment date or renewal rule differs across those records, the university’s written clarification becomes part of the financial decision.
- The federal MoHESR scholarship programme is for UAE nationals, not Indian applicants.
- Indian students use university merit awards, need-based aid, tuition discounts or funded research places.
- A full tuition scholarship doesn’t automatically cover housing, food, insurance or travel.
- MBZUAI MSc admission is fee-paying by default unless the written offer confirms funding.
- Several Dubai discounts depend on residence status, offer acceptance or a deposit.
- Net annual cost is more useful than the largest advertised scholarship percentage.
- Renewal conditions and award duration belong in the decision before any deposit.
Frequently asked questions
Can Indian students get scholarships in Dubai?
Yes. Indian applicants can compete for university awards open to international students, including merit scholarships, need-based aid, tuition discounts and funded graduate research places. They don’t qualify for the federal MoHESR scholarship programme for UAE nationals. Each university’s citizenship, residence, degree-level and intake conditions still apply.
Can I get a 100% scholarship in the UAE?
Some highly selective awards provide full tuition or a wider funded package. Khalifa University’s top international undergraduate tier lists full tuition, and the AUS President’s Scholarship lists tuition plus several living supports. Full coverage isn’t automatic, award numbers are limited and every benefit must appear in the applicant’s written offer.
Is MBZUAI fully funded for international students?
Current PhD funding begins centrally in Year 1 and later depends on a confirmed adviser match and satisfactory progress. MSc study is fee-paying by default, though merit or assistantship funding can be available. MAAI is fee-based and excluded from university or faculty-sponsored funding. The offer decides the applicant’s position.
Does Khalifa University require a separate scholarship application?
International undergraduate scholarships are assessed with admission, and no separate scholarship form is required. Master’s applicants should indicate scholarship interest inside the admission application. Funding is competitive and limited. The admission or scholarship offer states the actual tier and benefits, so meeting academic entry conditions doesn’t guarantee an award.
Does NYU Abu Dhabi give aid to Indian students?
NYU Abu Dhabi accepts financial-support applications from all students regardless of citizenship. Its institutional aid is need-based and uses the CSS Profile. New applicants must meet the deadline for their admission round. The university calculates demonstrated need from family financial information rather than using one marks-based scholarship table.
Are Dubai scholarships automatic?
Some are assessed automatically after admission or deposit, while others need a separate scholarship, grant or CSS Profile application. Research funding can depend on a faculty or assistantship match. The applicant’s funding tracker should state the method and deadline because admission alone doesn’t complete every scholarship process.
Can scholarship and stipend amounts be combined?
Only when the written terms allow stacking. MBZUAI currently says external scholarships or fellowships normally replace its stipend instead of adding to it. Other universities can restrict combining discounts or awards. A financial plan should include only benefits that the university has confirmed can be held together.
