What should an Indian lawyer know about the University of Auckland Master of Laws?

The University of Auckland Master of Laws is a 120-point, level 9 programme completed in one full-time year by existing law graduates. The 2027 postgraduate Law tuition table gives a range of NZD 51,298.80 to NZD 63,302.40. Depending on selected courses, the complete one-year model spans NZD 87,980.60 to NZD 99,984.20, or about INR 50.18 lakh to INR 57.03 lakh.

The programme offers coursework-only study and four supervised research formats covering a dissertation, directed study, thesis or portfolio, with six optional endorsed areas. This page is written for 2027 entry. The Student Services Fee, Studentsafe premium, final taught timetable and Law School award dates for 2027 were not published when checked.

How much does the University of Auckland Master of Laws cost in 2027?

The upper full-programme plan is NZD 99,984, about INR 57.03 lakh, but it isn’t a fixed invoice. It combines the upper 2027 Law tuition of NZD 63,302.40, upper annual living, latest services and insurance references, and one current visa application. The lower tuition endpoint produces a plan of about INR 50.18 lakh.

The NZD 20,000 visa-funds minimum is not added separately because living money is already included and remains the student's money. INR values use NZD 1 = INR 57.04094 on 25 August 2026. Flights, books, remittance costs, fee increases and professional-assessment costs are excluded.

The official fee table gives a Law range because the University charges by enrolled course. Up to 30 approved points outside Law can also change the invoice. The published lower per-point figure does not multiply exactly to the annual lower amount, so the annual band is retained without inventing a corrected fee.

The 2027 Student Services Fee and Studentsafe premium were still pending. Their latest 2026 references are included so the plan does not silently omit compulsory streams, but neither is labelled as a confirmed 2027 charge. Replace both when the University publishes the new amounts.

The lower plan is NZD 87,980.60 and the upper plan is NZD 99,984.20. Both add one year of living, the latest services and insurance references, and one visa charge to the published tuition endpoint. The displayed upper figure rounds to NZD 99,984.

The Law School award and two University scholarships are competitive. Current live pages use a 25 percent tuition value for the India and International awards, while older University material shows fixed maxima. No award is deducted from the base plan because eligibility and an offer do not guarantee selection.

The budget excludes flights, a rental bond, books, a computer, remittance spreads and every NZCLE or professional-admission cost. A part-time student also faces future tuition and living years, so multiplying the 2027 rate without increases would understate that route.

A family should treat the tuition range as the first uncertainty, not the only one. The official 2027 postgraduate fee table prices Law by course and publishes both a per-point band and a 120-point band. A taught schedule with mostly 30-point Law courses, a dissertation route, a research route and a mixed plan with approved Information Governance study need not invoice identically. The Offer of Place and enrolled course selection determine what is payable. The Student Services Fee and insurance then sit outside tuition, while accommodation and food vary by household choices. The upper plan gives a conservative starting point for one full-time year, but it is not a University quote or a fee cap.

Route duration changes how the same annual assumptions behave. A one-year full-time taught plan concentrates tuition, living and visa evidence into one academic cycle. A part-time route spreads tuition but can add living exposure, and an international student’s study mode must remain compatible with visa conditions. Research timing can also move when supervision, ethics or project development takes longer than expected. The student services fee page charges by enrolled points and had no final 2027 figure when researched. The budget therefore preserves each component rather than hiding everything inside a single lakh amount. Once the offer and course plan arrive, the applicant can replace tuition, services and insurance assumptions without rebuilding the whole model.

Scholarships should reduce risk only after award, not before application. The Auckland Law School Postgraduate Award publishes a value linked to compulsory tuition, but current regulations and older University pages conflict on the percentage and close dates. The India High Achievers and International Student Excellence schemes have their own selection rules. A family should budget against zero award and treat a confirmed scholarship as a reduction to a defined invoice. This avoids combining maximum values as though every applicant receives them. It also keeps funding sound if the Law award does not apply to the chosen route or intake. Flights, books, remittance costs and later professional-assessment expenses remain outside the upper programme plan.

Currency conversion should remain a dated reference. The NZD to INR figure on this page uses the published Reserve Bank of New Zealand and Reserve Bank of India references for 25 August 2026. A family will pay at later exchange rates and may also face bank spreads or remittance charges. Keeping the native NZD tuition and living components visible makes the plan auditable. It also prevents a stable-looking lakh figure from hiding movement in tuition, insurance, services fees or currency. Before each payment, the family can refresh the exchange rate and replace only the relevant annual charge. Immigration New Zealand states the funding rule directly:

“If you are applying for a student visa, you will need to show that you have enough money to live on and cover all your expenses while you are in New Zealand.”Immigration New Zealand, student fund requirements

This doesn’t replace the University’s academic requirements and can’t make an uncertain fee fixed.

Can an Indian applicant meet the University of Auckland LLM requirements?

Normal entry requires an LLB, LLB(Hons) or equivalent recognised law degree with GPE 5.0. The exact Law English threshold is IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with no band below 6.5. A narrow experience-based waiver is discretionary and is not a standard route for non-law graduates.

The normal academic decision has two parts. The prior award must be a law qualification of acceptable nature, level and standard, and the academic record must reach GPE 5.0. Meeting the number alone doesn’t make an unrelated degree equivalent to an LLB.

The India PDF is useful for testing whether an application is plausible, but its examples change with minimum pass rules and institution classification. A 60 percent result can map differently across systems. Upload the grading scale and let Auckland assess the complete transcript instead of presenting a self-converted GPE.

The PGCertLaw route is a recovery pathway for a law graduate below direct entry, not a cheaper duplicate LLM. It needs at least 60 postgraduate Law points with the stated average, and it can’t be used after the certificate has already been awarded.

Research applicants face an additional capacity decision. Topic fit, proposal quality and supervisor availability affect whether the research route can begin. The Faculty recommends early contact and points an applicant towards a taught LLM with dissertation when no suitable supervisor is available.

An endorsement creates an additional feasibility check because each named field needs at least 90 approved points. The Catalogue pool is broad, but the annual schedule may not supply enough suitable courses for every endorsement in every year.

The English rule is programme-specific. The degree-specific postgraduate table sets higher Law scores than the generic postgraduate minimum and also lists accepted test equivalents. AEMG direct entry is not accepted for Law in that table. An Indian applicant should therefore test the exact certificate, score, component floors and validity period against the current Law row. A coaching site or general Auckland page with IELTS 6.5 cannot override the faculty requirement. If an alternative English route is being used, written confirmation should name the LLM rather than only the University’s general postgraduate threshold.

The research file should show feasibility before it makes an academic claim. Start with a focused legal question, identify faculty expertise, and ask whether the proposed supervisor can take the project in the intended semester. The Faculty research-enrolment guidance ties enrolment to an offer, a supervisor, an approved proposal and Associate Dean approval. It also describes approximate research sizes, including about 15,000 words for LAW 790 and about 30,000 or 40,000 words for the thesis routes. These are planning guides, not permission to enrol. The approved topic and current course requirements control the final research design.

The academic threshold has two distinct tests. First, the prior award must be an acceptable law degree for the LLM route. Second, the University converts the record through its GPE method and applies the programme threshold. The University GPE calculator is the relevant conversion tool, while the India postgraduate table provides institution-group mappings. A percentage alone cannot establish eligibility without the degree type, institution group and converted result. Applicants from adjacent disciplines should not assume that legal work experience replaces the prior law qualification. Professional experience can strengthen context, but the published academic route remains controlling. A borderline or unusual qualification needs an official assessment before the applicant spends on tests, deposits or research preparation.

English is programme-specific and must be separated from general postgraduate rules. The published postgraduate English table sets the Law requirement and approved equivalents. One valid sitting, band floors and test validity all matter. An applicant should not substitute the University’s general postgraduate minimum or a competitor’s simplified score. The same discipline applies to research routes. Meeting English and GPE thresholds creates eligibility for consideration, not a supervisor or an approved topic. For a thesis, dissertation, directed study or portfolio, supervision and proposal approval remain separate conditions. For the taught route, current course availability and the point structure determine whether the desired endorsement can actually be assembled.

Five checks that decide an Indian LLM file

  1. A law degree is the normal starting point

The exceptional experience waiver is narrow and discretionary. It does not turn the LLM into a general postgraduate law course for any bachelor graduate. The separate Master of Legal Studies is the published option principally aimed at non-law graduates.
  2. The 2022 India table is not a 2027 conversion promise

The live GPE calculator and formal University assessment control. The dated PDF varies the indicative GPE 5 mapping by the institution category and the grading system’s minimum pass, so one generic Indian percentage would be misleading.
  3. Law English is higher than the general postgraduate floor

The exact LLM requires IELTS 7.0 with every band at least 6.5. Generic Auckland postgraduate guidance can display a lower result. Use the degree-specific Law table rather than the university-wide minimum or a competitor’s IELTS 6.5 claim.
  4. Research admission needs capacity as well as marks

A research applicant needs an available supervisor, an approved proposal and Faculty approval. The research confirmation form is not the admission application and does not guarantee enrolment. A staff profile establishes expertise, not capacity for the intended semester.
  5. The LLM is not a professional conversion

The NZCLE assesses the underlying overseas law qualification and can prescribe further academic or professional requirements. The LLM does not itself establish New Zealand admission, a practising certificate or BCI equivalence for India.

How does an Indian applicant apply to the University of Auckland LLM?

A taught applicant has one University application followed by enrolment, while a research applicant adds supervisor, proposal and Faculty approval hand-overs. Work backwards from the 1 December 2026 international planning date for Semester One 2027 because a submitted form doesn’t remove the separate English, research approval, funding and visa evidence steps.

The University owns admission. Auckland Law School adds supervisor and proposal approval for research. Immigration New Zealand owns the later visa decision.

The Semester One 2027 planning window remains workable. The staged plan fits on 27 August 2026, but scholarship consideration and research supervision can require earlier action than the admission date.

The allowances are Nbyula planning estimates, not processing times published by University of Auckland.

A taught applicant selects the programme, uploads the law degree and academic evidence, submits English evidence where required and responds to any request for further material. Enrolment choices then determine the actual tuition within the published Law band.

A research applicant should not submit a generic proposal and assume that admission will locate a supervisor later. The Faculty expects topic alignment and supervision planning before research enrolment, and its confirmation form is separate from the programme application.

The three 2027 starts are not interchangeable. March and July can support taught or research entry, subject to availability. December is only a Late Year start for a 120-point research masters and still depends on supervision.

Scholarship timing can precede the admission deadline or use an invitation process under the live scheme. A family should prepare an application that stands without an award, then respond to any scholarship invitation with the current required material.

After the offer, the visa file needs tuition evidence, living funds, insurance and outward-travel support. Current work rights don’t replace those funds. Research students should also ensure that the visa condition matches the research-credit structure actually enrolled.

The application sequence changes with route, but its evidence should stay internally consistent. The course plan, statement, CV and proposed specialisation should all describe the same academic purpose. A taught applicant who wants an endorsement must check whether enough suitable courses are scheduled to reach 90 points. A research applicant should link the proposal to available expertise and allow time for feedback before the research confirmation process. That form supports research approval and is not a substitute for admission. The University application remains the academic application, while Immigration New Zealand makes a separate decision after the offer. Keeping those hand-overs separate prevents a supervision email, conditional offer or visa work condition from being treated as proof of the others.

Timing also needs an international-applicant reading. The central postgraduate closing-date page provides the usable 2027 dates because the Catalogue leaves deadline cells blank and the programme page still carries older material. For Semester One, 1 December 2026 is the stated international planning date for visa processing even though a later general close appears. A late application may be considered only if space remains, which is not an extension. Semester Two and Late Year have different dates and conditions. An applicant should plan the academic, English, funding and research evidence around the earlier date that governs the intended route.

A taught applicant can begin with the academic record, English result, identity evidence and statement of route. A research applicant needs an additional sequence before the application is genuinely ready. The Law School supervisor directory helps identify topic fit, and the research-enrolment guidance requires an approved proposal and supervision. Contact should be specific enough to show the question, method and legal field. A broad message asking any academic to suggest a topic does not prove feasibility. The application should also distinguish a 30-point dissertation, 30-point directed study, thesis or research portfolio, because these are different structures rather than interchangeable labels for independent work.

Visa preparation belongs after the academic route but before last-minute travel planning. The Fee Paying Student Visa page lists tuition, living funds, insurance and outward travel evidence. Those requirements do not change the University’s academic deadline, and an offer does not guarantee the visa. The student should preserve source-of-funds records while the academic application is assessed, then use the actual offer and fee evidence. Permitted work during study should remain outside the core funding plan because the condition is a legal maximum, not assured employment or hours. This separation leaves the application viable if processing takes longer, course intensity limits work or no suitable job appears.

Offer review should happen before any non-refundable payment. The applicant should match the admitted intake, route, study load, tuition basis and academic conditions to the plan used in the application. A research applicant should also see how supervision or proposal approval is expressed. If the offer names a different route from the intended thesis, dissertation or endorsement, the cost and curriculum assumptions must be rebuilt before acceptance. This step is more useful than relying on a generic programme page because the offer identifies the University’s decision for that applicant.

Route-specific later startsSemester Two uses an 8 June 2027 international date. Late Year uses 11 November 2027 and is limited to a 120-point research masters subject to supervisor availability.
Visa timingImmigration New Zealand advises applying about three months before travel. The University’s 1 December recommendation is safer than relying on the later general close.

What can the University of Auckland LLM lead to after graduation?

The LLM can deepen legal specialisation, research and writing, but no programme-specific placement rate or salary dataset is published. For an overseas law graduate, New Zealand practice still begins with NZCLE assessment of the qualifying law degree. Immigration work permission and professional admission remain separate decisions.

India LLM equivalenceIndividual BCI processUnderlying recognised or equated LLB remains foundational

The University career list, one graduate story, a student visa and a subject rank are not LLM placement, salary or professional-admission evidence.

The programme can support advanced work in commercial, public, environmental, international, human-rights and dispute-resolution fields. Those are study and role directions, not proof of employer demand. The University publishes no denominator, response rate or salary distribution for this exact LLM.

For New Zealand practice, the qualifying overseas law degree is assessed first. NZCLE can require local subjects, an examination, Legal Ethics or professional preparation. The later Law Society and High Court sequence remains separate from the LLM and separate from immigration.

For India, the foreign LLM doesn’t replace the qualifying LLB. An Indian national may need BCI equivalence where a later qualification or formal use requires a recognised LLM. The intended use should be stated in a written regulator enquiry before relying on blanket recognition claims.

Current immigration settings can support up to three years of post-study work after an eligible level 9 masters studied full time in New Zealand for at least 30 weeks. A 2027 entrant finishes later, so the rules then in force control. Work permission does not authorise reserved legal practice.

Exact-programme accounts add learning context rather than outcome statistics. At least six accounts value comparative discussion across legal systems, seven describe freedom to deepen a specialised interest, and seven mention academic, advisory, library or administrative support. Four accounts describe combining the LLM with substantial employment or family responsibilities.

The distinction between academic depth and professional status should remain visible at every step. The New Zealand Law Society admission guidance places completion certification, character and High Court admission outside the university award. A practising certificate then controls regulated legal practice. The LLM may strengthen subject knowledge, research and writing, but it cannot promise how NZCLE will assess an Indian LLB or another overseas qualification. That assessment can prescribe further study or examinations. An applicant aiming for New Zealand practice should obtain the regulator decision early enough to price the extra academic and professional steps rather than treating the one-year LLM budget as the complete conversion cost.

The labour-market evidence is narrower than the programme’s career language. The University’s role list includes policy, research, taxation, teaching and legal work, but it does not report which roles the current LLM cohort obtained. One selected graduate story names a senior counsel outcome and proves only that person’s pathway. The university-wide graduate survey has a broader population and cannot become an LLM placement rate. A realistic return case should therefore rely on the applicant’s prior qualification, legal experience, chosen research or coursework, writing evidence, professional status and target jurisdiction. The absence of a programme salary figure is an evidence limit, not proof of either poor or strong returns.

Professional status must be mapped separately from academic specialisation. The NZCLE overseas qualification route assesses the underlying foreign law qualification and may prescribe additional academic requirements. Completing an Auckland LLM does not by itself convert an overseas law degree into a qualifying New Zealand LLB or grant admission. The Law Society process then deals with later professional and character steps. This is why an applicant should avoid describing the LLM as a New Zealand lawyer-conversion course. It can deepen legal knowledge, research and writing, but professional eligibility follows regulator decisions. An Indian advocate should likewise separate the postgraduate academic award from any Bar Council condition attached to practice or recognition.

Post-study work rights are another conditional outcome. The current qualification rules can support an eligible Level 9 master’s graduate who meets the New Zealand study requirements. The visa settings in force when a 2027 student graduates will control, not this page’s research date. A possible visa can provide time to work, but it does not produce a placement, professional admission or salary. The strongest career case links the chosen route to a demonstrable output: advanced coursework, an endorsement, a dissertation, a supervised research project or a thesis. That output then sits alongside prior legal education, experience and regulator status rather than replacing them.

Graduate stories are best used as questions, not probabilities. The University’s selected profiles show that individual LLM graduates have moved through practice, policy, academic and specialist roles. They do not publish the number of students who attempted the same move or the time taken. An applicant can still learn from the route: identify the graduate’s prior qualification, previous experience, chosen field and jurisdiction, then compare those inputs with the applicant’s own. This prevents an impressive title from being attributed to the LLM alone and produces a more realistic career-development plan.

How is the University of Auckland ranked for law?

QS places Auckland Law at number 65 in its 2026 Law and Legal Studies subject table, while Times Higher Education places Law in the 176 to 200 band for 2026. Neither result ranks this exact LLM, predicts admission or shows whether a preferred 2027 course or supervisor will be available.

Who is the University of Auckland LLM for, and who should avoid it?

It fits a law graduate seeking advanced taught or research study across a 120-point award and willing to separate the academic degree from professional admission. It does not fit a non-law graduate expecting normal entry or an overseas lawyer seeking automatic New Zealand practice.

VerdictYour backgroundWhy
Strong fitLaw graduate wanting a focused one-year postgraduate degreeThe 120-point full-time route can deepen a legal field without committing to a second qualifying law degree.
Strong fitApplicant with a defined research question and supervisor matchThesis and portfolio routes exist when topic, supervision and Faculty approval align.
Needs evidenceWorking lawyer considering part-time studyExact accounts show that work and study can coexist, but future fees, weekly load and current class timing need individual planning.
Needs evidenceLaw graduate below direct GPE 5.0A PGCertLaw recovery route exists, but it adds study and reassignment conditions before LLM entry.
Do not shortlistNon-law graduate expecting standard LLM admissionThe normal route needs an LLB or equivalent, while the experience waiver is exceptional and discretionary.
Do not shortlistOverseas lawyer expecting automatic New Zealand practiceNZCLE assessment and the separate professional sequence remain necessary after advanced study.
Do not shortlistFamily relying on a scholarship or term-time earningsAwards are competitive and the upper plan is about INR 57.03 lakh before professional costs.
Do not shortlistApplicant needing blanket BCI equivalence before enrolmentCurrent material supports an individual equivalence question, not automatic recognition of every route.

The strongest taught fit already knows which legal area deserves deeper study and is comfortable choosing from a changing annual timetable. An endorsement requires enough approved points in one area, so a title alone is not proof that every desired course will run.

The strongest research fit has a focused problem, evidence of research preparation and a realistic supervisor match. Interest in a broad field is only a starting point. The proposal and capacity decision determine whether the research route can proceed.

Part-time study can suit a practising lawyer, and four exact accounts show it alongside work or family commitments. Those students had different forms of support and none establishes a normal weekly workload. Current timetable, visa status and funding must be tested separately.

The LLM is a weak fit for professional conversion without regulator planning. NZCLE looks at the qualifying law degree and individual preparation, while India continues to treat the recognised or equated LLB as foundational. The postgraduate award cannot silently cure either issue.

The programme’s flexibility is valuable only when the file can use it. The Catalogue permits a large Law course pool, a limited outside-study allowance, dissertation, directed study, thesis and research portfolio structures. Yet approvals, timetable availability and supervision turn that pool into an individual plan. Exact LLM accounts repeatedly describe room to pursue a niche legal interest and useful support from academics, advisers or librarians. Those themes are encouraging, but most profiles were selected by the University and cannot promise supervision frequency or course access. A suitable applicant treats the approved pool as choices to verify, not as a guaranteed menu.

Financial fit is equally direct. The upper one-year plan reaches about INR 57.03 lakh before flights, books and professional-assessment costs. A live scholarship page may show a meaningful tuition percentage, but selection is not assured and older University material conflicts with the current scheme. Permitted student work is also a legal ceiling rather than income evidence. A family that needs both an award and steady paid hours to make the plan viable should not shortlist the programme yet. It should first secure a funding plan that covers tuition, living and the later regulator steps without assuming either outcome.

The strongest taught fit already knows why a broad LLM is better than a narrower degree. It can use the general plan or one of six endorsed areas, provided at least 90 points can be assembled from the approved field and current timetable. A weak fit chooses an endorsement from the marketing title without testing the annual course list. The specialisation page explains the field options, while the Catalogue controls points and routes. The applicant should identify several acceptable course combinations so one unavailable special topic does not collapse the plan.

The strongest research fit can state a manageable legal question, explain why Auckland has relevant supervision and accept that approval precedes enrolment. A weak fit selects the thesis label mainly to avoid taught assessment or assumes any professor listed online must supervise. The research route requires sustained independent work and an approved proposal. It may suit an applicant building academic, policy or specialist writing evidence, but it is not automatically better for employment. Fit is therefore route-specific. One applicant may gain more from a coherent taught portfolio and class interaction, while another needs the depth of a dissertation or thesis. The decision should follow the intended output, supervisor feasibility, time and funding.

What is the complete University of Auckland Master of Laws curriculum?

The current general taught plan publishes 162 unique approved courses, while the programme regulations add methodology, integrity, thesis and research-portfolio components. That pool shows the formal choice set, but it doesn’t guarantee that every course runs in 2027, fits one timetable or supplies the 90 points required for a preferred endorsement.

Total120
  • Complete 120 points under one approved taught, mixed or research structure.
  • LAW 700 and ACADINT A01 are zero-point programme requirements, subject to the published LAW 700 exemption.
  • The taught-only route needs at least 90 points from the approved Law pool and up to 30 approved Information Governance or other relevant 700-level points.
  • The dissertation route uses LAW 790 at 30 points, at least 60 further Law points and up to 30 approved outside points.
  • LAW 760 Directed Study at 15 points appears in the current plan and supports the 105 plus 15 structure on the programme page.
  • Research choices include 90-point and 120-point thesis or research-portfolio components under the current Catalogue.
  • An endorsed LLM needs at least 90 approved points in one of the six named specialisations.
  • Catalogue inclusion does not guarantee 2027 availability, and prior approval is required for outside-Law study.

The course table is the approved general pool, not a suggested 120-point timetable. A student normally combines 15-point and 30-point courses under one route, while a dissertation, directed study, thesis or portfolio changes how much taught space remains.

The six endorsements are optional. Corporate and Commercial Law, Environmental Law, Human Rights Law, International Law, Litigation and Dispute Resolution, and Public Law each need at least 90 approved points in the area. Course availability can decide whether an endorsement is feasible in the intended year.

The research structures are broader than the exact programme overview. The current Catalogue includes both thesis and research-portfolio choices at 90 and 120 points. The 90-point variants retain 30 approved taught, dissertation or supervised-research points.

The plan also permits up to 30 approved points from Information Governance or another relevant 700-level University area. Approval wording differs across official pages, so the student should obtain the Faculty decision before enrolling outside Law.

First-hand accounts support the programme’s intellectual flexibility without proving current delivery. Several graduates describe specialising through papers, course selection or research, and one linked an International Trade Law course to a thesis topic. No adequate experience evidence was found for research portfolios.

The practical course plan begins with the route rather than the longest list of attractive subjects. The general taught plan separates the Law pool from the smaller Information Governance group and states the minimum Law-point contribution for each taught structure. It also carries LAW 760 and LAW 790 inside the approved schedule. A student pursuing an endorsement then needs to map at least 90 points to the relevant area. The Faculty’s annual-availability warning matters because special-topic codes and visiting-teacher courses may not appear every year. A 2027 planner should therefore compare the approved pool with the actual class timetable, check prerequisites and delivery times, and obtain approval for every outside-Law substitution before treating the plan as complete.

The 120-point total can be reached through materially different learning designs. A fully taught plan spreads assessment across approved courses. LAW 790 adds a dissertation, LAW 760 creates directed study, and the research plan contains larger independent components. The research plan should be read beside the general taught plan because programme-wide labels do not show every point combination. Applicants should decide how much supervised research they want, then test eligibility and approval for that component. They should not assume that every route supports every endorsement or intake in the same way.

The long course table is an approved pool rather than an instruction to sample widely. Some codes represent special topics whose content changes, while Information Governance courses sit under separate limits. An endorsement needs concentration, not a collection of unrelated attractive subjects. The final 2027 timetable determines clashes, delivery periods and availability. A robust plan therefore includes a preferred set and alternatives that preserve the required Law points and endorsement field. Research components need even earlier attention because a topic and supervisor cannot be substituted at the last minute like one taught elective. This approach turns the curriculum from a catalogue of names into a route that can actually be enrolled.

Assessment style should also influence the route choice. A taught plan distributes deadlines across seminars and courses, while a dissertation or thesis concentrates more responsibility in a sustained research output. Directed study sits between standard class enrolment and a larger independent project. The applicant should compare prior research experience, writing discipline, feedback needs and the evidence wanted after graduation. No route is universally more rigorous or more employable. The better route is the one whose formal requirements, supervision and outputs match the applicant’s purpose and can be completed within the funded time.

Endorsement planning needs the same restraint. The six named areas provide a useful academic signal only when the student completes the required concentration from approved courses. The title alone does not guarantee that every desired subject appears in the 2027 timetable. A student should map the 90-point field requirement, retain alternative courses inside the same area and preserve the programme’s minimum Law-point rule. If that map fails, the general LLM may be more honest and workable than an endorsement assembled from unavailable or unapproved study. The final enrolment record, not the initial preference, determines what the student actually completes.

Should an Indian lawyer shortlist the University of Auckland LLM?

Shortlist it if you already hold a recognised law degree, want advanced academic legal study and accept that professional admission is a separate process. The normal academic decision uses a law degree and GPE 5.0, while research study also depends on supervisor and topic approval.

The programme offers more choice than the overview page suggests. A student can build taught study, add a dissertation or directed study where approved, or pursue thesis and research-portfolio routes. Six endorsements can give the award a named focus, but enough suitable courses must actually run to complete 90 approved points.

Three things are genuinely hard here. The 2027 tuition is a course-dependent range rather than one fixed LLM price. Research entry is not secured until supervision and the proposal are approved. Most importantly, the LLM does not automatically qualify an overseas law graduate to practise in New Zealand or establish Indian equivalence, so it is a poor fit for anyone buying it as a professional conversion.

Before deciding, compare full cost, academic fit, application timing and professional route.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the University of Auckland LLM for an Indian student in 2027?

The official 2027 Law tuition range is NZD 51,298.80 to NZD 63,302.40 for 120 points. Adding upper-estimate Auckland living, latest published services and insurance references, and one visa gives an upper plan of NZD 99,984, about INR 57.03 lakh. Flights, books and professional costs remain outside it.

What degree do I need for the University of Auckland LLM?

Normal entry needs an LLB, LLB(Hons) or equivalent recognised law degree with GPE 5.0. A narrow experience-based waiver exists for a bachelor graduate with equivalent relevant preparation, but it is discretionary rather than a standard non-law route. The separate Master of Legal Studies is designed principally for non-law graduates.

What IELTS score does the University of Auckland LLM require?

The exact LLM requirement is IELTS Academic 7.0 overall with no band below 6.5. That is higher than Auckland's generic postgraduate minimum. Published alternatives include TOEFL iBT 98 with writing 24 and PTE Academic 65 with no communicative skill below 58, subject to the current degree-specific table.

Does the University of Auckland LLM require GRE or GMAT?

No GRE or GMAT requirement is published for standard LLM entry. The deciding academic evidence is the recognised prior law degree and GPE 5.0, with the programme's Law-specific English rule where applicable. Do not add a test merely because a comparison site lists one unless Auckland confirms it for this programme.

When is the University of Auckland LLM deadline for 2027?

For Semester One beginning 1 March 2027, international applicants are advised to apply by 1 December 2026 for visa processing. Semester Two uses 8 June 2027. Late Year uses 11 November 2027 but is limited to a 120-point research masters and remains subject to supervisor availability.

Can I choose a taught or research University of Auckland LLM?

Yes. Current rules support all-taught study, taught work with a dissertation, directed study where approved, 90-point and 120-point theses, and 90-point and 120-point research portfolios. Research enrolment also needs supervisor, proposal and Faculty approval. The actual 2027 timetable controls which taught courses can be selected.

Does the University of Auckland LLM qualify me to practise law in New Zealand?

No. The LLM is advanced postgraduate study and does not automatically admit an overseas law graduate. NZCLE first assesses the qualifying overseas law degree and can prescribe further study or examinations. Professional training, completion and character certificates, High Court admission and a current practising certificate may still be required.

Is the University of Auckland LLM recognised by the Bar Council of India?

A blanket equivalence claim is not supported. BCI treats a valid recognised or equated LLB as the professional foundation and may require an Indian national with a foreign LLM to seek equivalence for later formal use. Ask for written guidance naming the exact LLM route and intended purpose before relying on it.
