What is the UC Master of Artificial Intelligence, and what should you check first?

The UC Master of Artificial Intelligence is a 180-point, 18-month applied degree for graduates with advanced computing preparation. UC publishes 2027 international tuition of NZD 39,600 per 120 points. Scaled to 180 points, 2027 tuition is NZD 59,400, approximately INR 33.75 lakh.

The programme combines 120 compulsory points, a required 15-point AI choice and 45 elective points. Its 60-point AI Project is one-third of the award. This page plans for the February 2027 intake. UC has published the 1 December 2026 international closing date, although course availability, the exact COSC681 calendar, Student Services Levy and insurance still need confirmation in your own offer and Enrolment Agreement.

How much does the UC Master of Artificial Intelligence cost for an Indian student?

A transparent planning total is NZD 99,944, approximately INR 56.78 lakh, using the 180-point 2027 tuition estimate, 78 weeks of UC’s homestay budget, its listed annual or one-off allowance and the current student visa fee. Student Services Levy, insurance, flights, deposits and later changes remain extra.

Full 18-month planning budget

The homestay figure is UC's planning estimate for one living arrangement, not a fixed bill or the Immigration New Zealand funds test. Each applicant's housing contract and visa evidence remain individual. Converted using NZD 1 = approximately INR 56.82 from the Reserve Bank of New Zealand B1 release dated 27 August 2026. The INR figures exclude bank spreads and transfer charges.

UC states NZD 39,600 per 120 points for this qualification in 2027 on its international master’s fee page. Scaling the published rate to 180 points gives NZD 59,400. This is planning arithmetic rather than a Special Programme Fee, so the final Enrolment Agreement and selected courses control what UC invoices.

The living line uses the UC estimate dated 15 July 2026. NZD 478 multiplied by 78 weeks gives NZD 37,284. The weekly estimate includes homestay accommodation, a mobile allowance, food, transport, contents and liability insurance, and incidentals. It isn’t a quote for a specific room or meal plan.

UC lists another NZD 2,410 for annual or one-off costs on the same homestay page. The list covers a placement fee, books and stationery, parking and clothing. This plan includes it once. A student without a car may spend less on parking, while programme materials, winter heating or arrival purchases can push another line higher.

The current Fee Paying Student Visa charge starts at NZD 850. Immigration New Zealand separately requires credible tuition and living funds, outward travel money, insurance and other evidence. A visa charge isn’t the whole immigration budget, and the application fee can vary with the filing context.

UC excludes the Student Services Levy and international student insurance from its fee estimate. Neither has been inserted as an invented figure. Flights, accommodation deposits, health checks, police certificates, course repeats, extra points, exchange movements and transfer charges also remain outside NZD 99,944. The Enrolment Agreement and an insurance quotation are necessary before payment.

The UC India High Achievers Scholarship lists a NZD 10,000 first-year postgraduate tuition contribution for eligible Indian students. Semester One 2027 applications close on 24 October 2026 and Semester Two applications close on 30 April 2027. The award is competitive, so it isn’t subtracted before it is granted.

The NZD amount remains the reliable planning base. At NZD 1 to approximately INR 56.82, a five percent movement in the exchange rate changes the rupee comparison by about five percent before bank charges. Families should hold an INR buffer and avoid reading INR 56.78 lakh as a fixed invoice.

Part-time work shouldn’t close the funding gap. A student visa may permit up to 25 hours weekly and full-time work in scheduled holidays under the current visa conditions, but a job, work hours and earnings are never guaranteed. The programme’s taught work and large project remain the main commitment.

Can an Indian applicant get into the UC Master of Artificial Intelligence?

You can qualify through a computer science or related bachelor’s with a UC B average in 60 advanced computing points. A second route accepts broader advanced courses only when at least five years of relevant experience proves the missing computer science and mathematics knowledge. Executive Dean approval still applies.

Requirements in checking order

Indian universities don’t label courses as New Zealand 300-level points. UC assesses the content, academic level and grades in the transcript. A one-page mapping can pair each final-year course name, semester, credits, mark and syllabus topic with the closest UC area. It can show where algorithms, software engineering, artificial intelligence, data and computer engineering sit in the degree. The mapping helps the assessor but doesn’t replace UC’s decision.

A B average is not a single Indian percentage published for this degree. UC’s programme-specific rule names its own grade and advanced-point set, while Indian institutions use different marking distributions and CGPA systems. A 55, 60, 65 or 70 percent conversion copied from another UC qualification is not an MAI cut-off. The transcript and grading scale enable an individual decision.

The five-year route is narrower than it first appears. The current regulations still require a related bachelor’s and a B average in 60 advanced points. Experience must demonstrate core computer science and mathematics knowledge relevant to AI. Five years in an adjacent title without that evidence does not satisfy the wording.

Use concrete evidence for the experience route. A dated CV can show responsibility, but repositories, architecture notes, model evaluation, production monitoring, mathematical coursework and project reports explain what you actually know. The Head of Department approves the preparation, and the Executive Dean or delegate approves candidature. Neither decision can be assumed from job title alone.

The standard postgraduate English requirement is IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.0 in every skill. UC requires one sitting within two years of the expected start. It also lists PTE, Duolingo, Cambridge, TOEFL and other routes with their own component rules. The live table governs the chosen test.

English-medium study in India should not be treated as an automatic waiver. UC’s official checker says evidence can come from a qualification substantially taught in English in a country where English predominates, or from an approved test. That wording does not publish a blanket India exemption. Obtain written confirmation before relying on a medium-of-instruction letter.

The overseas admission page asks for transcripts, graduation certificates, a grading scale and translations where documents are not in English. A missing grading scale can make a high mark hard to interpret. Upload legible complete records rather than only a consolidated marks statement if individual semesters carry the course detail.

Progression is also strict after admission. The regulation states the following.

A student may not fail more than 15 points in this qualification.

Four rules that change an Indian application

1. A related degree still needs advanced computing evidence

   A degree title such as electronics, information technology, mathematics or data science does not settle the file. UC assesses whether the degree is related and whether 60 advanced points fit the published computing route. Map the actual transcript rather than arguing from the award title.

2. Five years does not replace the B average

   The alternative route keeps the advanced-course B average. The five relevant years are additional evidence of core computer science and mathematics knowledge. They are not a waiver for weak or missing advanced study.

3. No published Indian percentage conversion

   UC publishes no MAI-specific Indian percentage or CGPA threshold. The institution, grading scale, course level and subject content all need assessment. A written UC decision is necessary before any general conversion can be treated as binding.

4. The progression limit is only 15 points

   Most named taught courses carry 15 points. One failed standard course therefore reaches the published maximum failure allowance. Prerequisites and workload deserve attention when difficult technical electives share a semester.

How and when should an Indian student apply for the UC Master of Artificial Intelligence?

Apply in myUC after mapping your advanced computing courses and preparing complete academic and English evidence. UC lists 1 December 2026 for Semester One 2027 international applications, but it recommends starting at least six months before study. Immigration New Zealand separately recommends applying three months before travel.

Use myUC for admission and course enrolment, then prepay tuition as instructed, obtain the UC receipt, apply online for the Fee Paying Student Visa and complete enrolment after course and visa approval.

This intake is short by 132 days. Only 96 days remain and the chain needs 228. Target the next intake instead of rushing an incomplete file.

Start with the academic fit because it takes the most judgement. Make a course map, attach syllabi where titles are vague and identify how your advanced work covers programming, algorithms, software engineering, data, artificial intelligence and mathematics. An applicant using the experience route should add a detailed CV and project evidence that demonstrates the knowledge named in the regulations.

The overseas qualification process asks you to upload transcripts and graduation certificates in myUC, include the grading scale and add translations for documents not in English. UC assesses admission to the university and the chosen qualification together. A complete document set reduces avoidable requests, but it does not guarantee programme approval.

UC recommends applying at least six months before the planned start. The international closing date is 1 December 2026 for Semester One and 1 May 2027 for Semester Two. Treat those as final university dates, not ideal offshore submission targets. The earlier scholarship date, academic assessment and visa sequence can decide whether February remains realistic.

UC’s international enrolment steps require the application in myUC, tuition prepayment, the student visa, course addition and final enrolment. Read the Offer of Place and Enrolment Agreement before paying. The published 2027 tuition is an estimate, while the agreement gives the actual amount and conditions for your file.

The visa file needs the approved course offer, tuition evidence, genuine living funds, outward travel funds, suitable insurance and health or character documents where required. The Fee Paying Student Visa page currently shows 80 percent processed within 8.5 weeks and strongly encourages applying three months before intended travel. Processing can change and no percentile is a personal guarantee.

Non-refundable travel should not depend on an assumed project break. UC’s programme page says project work occurs over the summer months from November to January. The 2027 COSC681 course page says students may start in Semester One or Two and describes a 12-month course. Both are official, so each cohort schedule needs a direct written answer from the department.

What jobs can the UC Master of Artificial Intelligence lead to?

The curriculum can support AI software, data, research and security pathways, but UC publishes no MAI placement rate, salary distribution or named employer list. New Zealand government pay ranges describe whole occupations, not this programme’s graduates, so use them to understand role markets rather than to forecast your first salary.

Outcome evidence and its limits

The pay lines cover workers across New Zealand occupations and experience levels. They are not UC salaries, MAI graduate starting pay, offers or guarantees.

The programme page identifies possible work in ICT research and engineering, automated transport, artificial assistants, large-scale data processing and cybersecurity. Those directions follow from the subject matter, but they do not state how many graduates entered each field. Your prior degree, project depth, software portfolio, work experience and right to work will affect which job descriptions are realistic.

The 60-point project is the clearest work-relevant evidence. The 2027 COSC681 page says students design, develop and test an AI software solution to a complex problem, evaluate it, communicate professionally and demonstrate leadership of an applied project. That can produce credible interview evidence. It is still an assessed course, not a promised internship, client or job.

Tahatū, the New Zealand Ministry of Education career service, lists AI specialist as a related title on its data scientist profile. It reports NZD 83,000 to NZD 143,000 as the most common pre-tax range. The profile says experience and a relevant qualification are listed as common preparation, which is why the figure must not be read as a fresh graduate offer.

A software-heavy route can also connect to the software developer profile, where the most common pre-tax range is NZD 90,000 to NZD 154,000. This range includes many roles and seniority levels. It does not prove that every AI project matches production software engineering or that every employer values the MAI in the same way.

An eligible graduate may apply for a Post Study Work Visa. Current rules require a degree-level 7 or higher qualification to be studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 30 weeks. The visa can last up to three years depending on the qualification and study. It costs from NZD 1,670, needs at least NZD 5,000 for living expenses and may be granted only once.

The 18-month programme appears long enough to exceed the 30-week study condition when completed full-time in New Zealand, but duration alone does not create a visa entitlement. You must complete the qualification recorded on the student visa, apply in time and meet the health, character, funds and other rules then in force. The visa is a work-search opportunity, not employment or residence.

No independent exact-programme student or graduate account qualified in the experience sweep. The page therefore makes no claim about teaching quality, workload, supervision, industry access or job-search experience for a typical MAI student. How is UC ranked for computer science around the Master of Artificial Intelligence?

UC sits in the QS 401-450 band for Computer Science and Information Systems and the Times Higher Education 601-800 band for Computer Science in 2026. These tables rank the university’s subject area, not the Master of Artificial Intelligence, and neither position changes the published admission rules.

Who is the UC Master of Artificial Intelligence for?

It fits a computing graduate who can prove strong advanced coursework and wants a substantial AI software project. It needs individual assessment for adjacent degrees or the five-year experience route. A fresh non-computing graduate, or anyone relying on a guaranteed internship or placement, should not shortlist it.

Match your background to the published structure

A strong fit can show the academic match before discussing AI enthusiasm. The transcript should carry enough advanced computing work, while projects can demonstrate implementation, evaluation and mathematical judgement. That combination prepares the file for UC’s subject review and prepares the student for machine learning, deep learning and the applied project after admission.

An adjacent degree needs a content-based case. Electronics may contribute embedded systems and mathematics, statistics may contribute modelling, and information technology may contribute software and data work. None automatically proves the specific advanced computing set. Syllabus comparison matters more than the degree title, and UC’s written assessment is necessary before a financial commitment.

The approved 30-point substitution can add useful direction, but it does not turn the degree into a free-form master’s. The published programme keeps its compulsory machine learning, deep learning, research methods, ethics and project structure. Actual 2027 approved-course availability must be known before any preferred statistics or business option can be assumed.

A student seeking research thesis depth should compare the 60-point applied software project with a thesis route rather than treating every 60-point component as equivalent. COSC681 emphasises designing, implementing, testing and communicating a solution. It may support later research work, but the MAI regulations describe an applied project and no thesis endorsement.

What does the 180-point UC Master of Artificial Intelligence curriculum contain?

The regulated structure has 120 compulsory points, 15 points from Intelligent Tutoring Systems or Computer Vision, and 45 elective points from specified pools. COSC681 alone carries 60 points. The table preserves every named course and every published elective category rather than inventing subject buckets or a credit split.

Complete regulated course and elective structure

• Complete all 120 points in Schedule C, including the 60-point COSC681 AI Project
• Choose 15 points from COSC420 Intelligent Tutoring Systems or COSC428 Computer Vision
• Complete another 45 points from the published Group 1 and Group 2 elective pools
• Use no more than 15 points from the named DATA range and no more than 30 approved points from another subject
• The failure allowance is at most 15 points, and the qualification has a 36-month maximum

The compulsory taught core totals 60 points before the project. Machine Learning and Deep Learning develop model methods, Research Methods prepares the investigation and evaluation process, and Ethics of Artificial Intelligence brings social and philosophical judgement into technical work. The separate Group 1 choice then adds either intelligent tutoring or computer vision.

COSC681 is one-third of the whole degree. The 2027 course description requires an open-ended AI software solution to a complex problem, with design, implementation, testing or evaluation and professional communication. Head of Department approval is a prerequisite, and the course is restricted to MAI students.

The elective pool is controlled rather than open. Eligible Computer Science and Software Engineering ranges carry exclusions, the DATA list contributes no more than 15 points, and INFO621 and INFO634 are named options. A Head of Department may approve up to 30 points from another 400 or 600-level subject. That permission should be obtained before planning a specialisation around it.

Project timing remains unresolved for a new cohort. The qualification page says project work takes place from November to January, while the 2027 COSC681 page says the 60-point course can begin with Semester One or Two and lasts 12 months. The department needs to explain how proposal, build, assessment and supervision dates fit each intake before outside employment or travel is arranged.

Course prerequisites still apply inside an admitted programme. The regulations list specific preparation for COSC401, COSC440 and COSC428, while several courses remain subject to Head of Department approval. Admission to the award therefore does not mean every elective combination is available to every student. Use the 2027 Course Information System and obtain course approvals in myUC.

Should you shortlist the UC Master of Artificial Intelligence?

The programme suits applicants whose bachelor’s is in computer science or a related field, whose advanced computing marks meet the UC B average, and who want a large applied AI software project. It is neither a coding conversion course nor an internship or placement promise.

The academic case is strongest for a student who already understands algorithms, programming and enough mathematics to enter machine learning and deep learning at postgraduate level. The degree then adds research methods, AI ethics, a computer vision or intelligent tutoring choice, specialised electives and a 60-point software project that requires an implemented and tested solution. Up to 30 elective points may move into another approved advanced subject, which can support a statistics or business information systems direction without changing the award.

Three drawbacks can change the decision. The full planning cost is about INR 56.78 lakh before Student Services Levy, insurance, flights and deposits. The rules assume advanced computing preparation and permit only a narrow experience-based alternative after at least five relevant years. UC also publishes no MAI placement rate, salary distribution, named recruiter list or guaranteed employer project, so a budget that depends on a quick AI job is too fragile.
