An Indian student can study medicine in Austria at four public locations, but this is a German-only, rank-based route rather than an English MBBS option. Entry depends on the MedAT-H test, a site-specific rank, the non-EU allocation and later proof of C1 German and an acceptable school qualification. The first decision is whether that combination is realistic before months of preparation are committed.
The latest complete 2026/27 cycle offered 1,806 Human Medicine places, while applicants in the non-EU allocation could receive no more than 5 percent of them. Exact 2027 dates and seat numbers were not published on 15 August 2026, although JKU says the next round begins in March 2027. That timing makes German ability, Class XII review and location choice the immediate parts of a wider study in Austria plan.
Is public medicine in Austria a realistic route for you?
Public medicine in Austria is realistic only when German, quota, school eligibility, location and the annual calendar all work together. The decision aid below separates a condition that can still be completed from one that makes the route unsuitable.
C1 is the advanced CEFR language level required at university admission, although enough German to understand MedAT is needed much earlier. An Indian citizen applying with Indian Class XII usually enters the non-EU allocation unless a recognised legal equality changes the category. Its 5 percent limit is a ceiling, not a promised share of places.
| Your current position | Feasibility judgement | What changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| You need an English-medium medical degree | The public MedAT route does not fit | The test, official preparation and degree are in German |
| Your German can support a long science and reasoning test, with C1 planned by admission | The language route is workable | The accepted C1 proof and its validity must match the chosen university |
| Your Indian Class XII qualification has not been assessed by the chosen university | MedAT participation may be possible, but later admission is unresolved | A university review of schooling, subjects and documents |
| You expect several simultaneous attempts or an unrestricted international pool | The competition model has been misunderstood | One usable test location and the correct non-EU classification |
| You can follow one annual cycle, attend the chosen site and prepare documents before results | The timeline is workable | The next regulation must publish the dates, fee and places |
This matrix is not an admission score. It is a stop-or-proceed check built from the conditions that apply before and after MedAT. A strong test result can’t repair the wrong quota, missing C1 proof or an unacceptable school qualification.
Can you study public medicine in Austria in English?
No. Austria’s public MedAT route is taught in German, and both MedAT and the official preparation material are available only in German. The common MedAT information for international applicants also states that C1 German is required for admission.
The admission test and the official preparation material are solely available in German.MedAT, information in English
C1 is an advanced language level on the Common European Framework of Reference, or CEFR. It isn’t only a certificate problem. The test itself asks you to process science, text, reasoning and social-emotional tasks in German, so a student who plans to obtain a certificate after the test still needs enough German to compete on test day.
The timing has one useful distinction. C1 proof is checked for university admission after a place is won, not for online MedAT registration. Med Uni Graz’s current language page lists accepted C1 routes and says the certificate may not be more than two years old. The chosen university’s current list controls the proof.
This route is therefore different from general bachelor’s study in Austria, where some genuine English courses exist. An English information page for a medical university doesn’t make its medicine degree English-medium.
Which public medical universities use MedAT?
Human Medicine uses MedAT-H at Vienna, Innsbruck, Graz and the JKU Linz route. Dental Medicine uses the separate MedAT-Z at Vienna, Innsbruck and Graz. The current public allocation is easiest to understand by location because each location creates its own rank list. ECTS is the European study-credit unit, with 60 ECTS representing one full-time academic year.
| Study location | Human Medicine places | Dental Medicine places | Programme point that affects your choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medical University of Vienna | 704 | 80 | Human Medicine is a 12-semester diploma programme |
| Medical University of Innsbruck | 390 | 40 | The chosen Innsbruck rank list controls the result |
| Medical University of Graz | 382 | 24 | The university runs its own later foreign-certificate review |
| JKU Linz route | 330 | Not offered through MedAT-Z | Medicine begins as a 180-ECTS bachelor, followed by the Human Medicine master’s route |
| Total | 1,806 | 144 | 1,950 medicine and dentistry places across the public procedure |
The numbers come from the dated national 2026/27 allocation. They must be refreshed when the 2027 regulation appears. The Vienna general programme page shows an older Human Medicine number, which is why the current national allocation is the safer source for this cycle.
JKU isn’t simply a fourth copy of the diploma programme. Its Human Medicine route begins with a six-semester, 180-ECTS bachelor, and students may spend the first two years in Linz or Graz before continuing at JKU.
These medical universities belong to the public university sector, but their medicine admission is more specialised than the general comparisons used to shortlist universities in Austria.
Can you use one MedAT result at several universities?
No. The same test is held at all locations on the same day, and the result stays with the location and programme selected for that attempt. A Vienna result does not enter the Innsbruck, Graz or JKU rank list.
The participation is limited to one study location.MedAT, information in English
The official FAQ adds a detail that is easy to miss. Several registrations are not formally prohibited, but simultaneous tests make only one attendance possible, and fees paid for unused registrations are not refunded. Operationally, one cycle gives you one real attempt at one site.
Previous applicant numbers do not identify a reliably easier location. The official MedAT myths guidance says the next cohort and its preparation can change, so a future cut-off cannot be predicted from an old ratio. Programme structure, city, travel and the site-specific rank list are firmer reasons for choosing.
How does the non-EU allocation affect an Indian applicant?
A typical Indian citizen applying with Indian Class XII enters the non-EU allocation for Human Medicine, unless a residence status or another legally recognised exception gives EU-equivalent treatment. The official non-EU classification depends on nationality, school-leaving certificate and any applicable legal equivalence, not nationality alone.
At least 95 percent of Human Medicine places are reserved for EU citizens and applicants treated as equivalent. Within that protected share, at least 75 percent is reserved for Austrian school-leaving certificates and specified equivalents. The remaining non-EU allocation can receive no more than 5 percent of Human Medicine places.
Maximum non-EU allocation = up to 5% of Human Medicine places, subject to the site-specific rank
The 5 percent is a ceiling, not an acceptance rate or a promised number for Indian students. It does not create one national pool that can be entered from every location. You still need a high enough result in the non-EU rank list for the site you chose.
The quota category selected during registration is later checked against documents. The Medical University of Innsbruck admission guidance warns that a corrected category can trigger re-ranking and loss of the offered place. The correct classification has to be settled before a result is treated as secure.
Does permission to sit MedAT prove university admission eligibility?
No. MedAT participation and later university admission are two separate checks. A final-year school student may register and write the test, while C1 German, the completed school qualification, quota evidence and formal documents are examined after a place offer.
No proof of secondary school leaving certificate or A-levels is required.Medical University of Vienna, joint 2026 registration release
The quotation applies to registration and test participation, not final enrolment. The common MedAT rules allow someone completing the final school year to participate, and school marks do not decide the rank. If the school qualification is not proved within the later admission period, the offered place lapses.
| Stage | What you provide or complete | What the stage decides | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online registration | Personal details, programme, location, quota category and complete payment within the window | Whether the test registration becomes valid | That Class XII is accepted for university entry |
| MedAT test day | Required identity and test-day documents at the chosen location | Your score for that site’s rank list | That C1 and admission documents are complete |
| Place offer | A sufficiently high site and quota rank | Whether you may enter the admission stage | Final enrolment |
| University admission | Completed school qualification, C1 proof, quota evidence, originals, certifications and any required translations | Whether the university enrols you | Automatic exemption from supplementary examinations |
This split explains why a student can write MedAT before every admission document is ready without being guaranteed enrolment. The post-result admission page lists the later school, language and document checks.
What does MedAT-H test, and how should preparation begin?
MedAT-H gives 80 percent of its weight to basic science and cognitive skills, with text comprehension and social-emotional competence making up the remaining 20 percent. The annual regulation controls the live format, so the next cycle must be checked before a study plan is frozen.
| Section | What the abbreviation means | Weight | What it tests |
|---|---|---|---|
| BMS | Basic Knowledge Test for Medical Studies | 40% | School-level biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics |
| TV | Text Comprehension | 10% | Understanding and working with written information |
| KFF | Cognitive Abilities and Skills | 40% | Tasks such as memory, number sequences, word fluency and recognising implications |
| SEK | Social-Emotional Competences | 10% | Emotion recognition, emotion regulation and social decision-making |
The official MedAT-H content page gives the four sections and weights. Correct answers in BMS, TV and KFF receive one point, while wrong answers receive zero. There is no negative marking for those multiple-choice answers.
The universities provide free official material through the Virtual Medical Campus, or VMC. A free account gives the same official material for all four locations. The universities do not endorse unauthorised commercial coaching or claim that it improves selection chances.
- Create the free VMC account and read every task instruction in German.
- Map the BMS topic lists against Class XI and XII biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics.
- Use school books to close a named BMS gap instead of treating one commercial book as the syllabus.
- Practise KFF, TV and SEK in the exact official task format.
- Repeat full sections under time only after the German instructions are clear.
A university preparation programme is not the same product. It addresses supplementary admission examinations after a university prescribes them. VMC material prepares you for MedAT. Mixing the two can leave the actual admission test uncovered.
What is the next MedAT timeline after the 2026 test?
The exact 2027 calendar is not yet published. JKU says its next round begins in March 2027, while the common MedAT FAQ says new dates are normally announced around the turn of the year after the annual rules are published.
The latest complete cycle remains useful as a planning sequence, not as a 2027 date promise. In 2026, registration and payment ran from 2 March to 31 March, the test was held on 3 July, and results were scheduled for calendar week 32, which ran from 3 to 9 August 2026.
After registration closed, applicants had 94 days until test day. A student starting German, science revision and document review only after payment would therefore have little room to correct a major gap.
| Step | 2026 example | What makes the step valid | What must be refreshed for 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Registration opened 2 March | The online account records programme, location and quota category | Opening date and annual regulation |
| 2 | Registration and payment closed 31 March | Both the online application and complete fee reach the university in time | Closing date and MedAT fee |
| 3 | MedAT took place 3 July | The applicant attends the chosen site with the required test-day documents | Test date and physical venue |
| 4 | Results planned for calendar week 32, from 3 to 9 August 2026 | The site-specific score enters the correct quota rank list | Result week and access method |
| 5 | Admission followed the result | The offered applicant proves C1, school eligibility, quota and documents | Admission deadline and university document list |
Registration is valid only when both the form and full payment arrive inside the window. The official registration page says late registration and late payment are not available. MedAT is held once a year for the following winter semester, so a missed window normally means waiting for the next annual cycle.
How is Indian Class XII checked after a MedAT offer?
Each medical university checks the foreign school qualification in its own admission procedure. An Indian Class XII certificate is not converted into an automatic national yes or no by the MedAT score.
Med Uni Graz provides the clearest published example of the assessment dimensions. Its international education guidance checks whether the qualification gives access to all higher-education sectors in the issuing country, whether schooling lasted at least 12 years and whether six stated general subjects are present. They are two languages, mathematics, one natural science, one humanities subject and one more general subject in secondary school level II. Missing schooling or subject breadth can lead to as many as four supplementary examinations.
the applicant has had at least twelve years of schoolingMedical University of Graz, international educational background
Twelve years is only one part of the Graz test, not a blanket promise that every Indian board certificate is accepted. Vienna, Innsbruck and JKU publish their own document and admission routes. The complete Austria university admission sequence for Indian documents also separates the application, admission decision, supplementary examinations and enrolment.
For documents issued in India, Graz currently uses the Hague Apostille Convention route. The apostille belongs on the original and is issued by the responsible authority in India. Documents already issued in English do not need translation under the current Graz rule. Another foreign language needs a translation attached securely after the required certification marks are present.
- The chosen university’s current school-qualification rule controls the assessment.
- The quota evidence must support the category selected during MedAT registration.
- The C1 certificate must be an accepted proof and remain within any validity period.
- Originals, certified copies, apostilles and translations must follow the university’s order.
- Any supplementary examinations belong to admission preparation, not MedAT preparation.
How much do MedAT and public medicine cost?
The latest MedAT fee was EUR 110 for the 2026 cycle, while current named public-university pages show EUR 726.72 tuition per semester for most third-country students. The compulsory student-union contribution is separate. Vienna and JKU show EUR 26.20 for 2026/27.
Approximate INR = published EUR amount x 110.3818, using the ECB reference rate for 14 August 2026
The ECB reference rate gives EUR 1 as INR 110.3818 on 14 August 2026. It is an informational rate, so a bank or card conversion will differ.
| Charge | Published amount | Approx. INR | When it applies |
|---|---|---|---|
| MedAT fee in the 2026 cycle | EUR 110 | INR 12,100 | Paid with registration and not refunded for non-attendance |
| Public-university tuition for most third-country students | EUR 726.72 per semester | INR 80,200 per semester | After admission, subject to the student’s legal fee status |
| Two semesters of tuition | EUR 1,453.44 | INR 1.60 lakh | One academic year before the student-union contribution |
| Student-union contribution shown by Vienna and JKU for 2026/27 | EUR 26.20 per semester | INR 2,900 per semester | Compulsory semester charge, separate from tuition |
Current public medicine charges, converted at EUR 1 = INR 110.3818 on 14 August 2026
The tuition amount is supported by current pages from Medical University of Vienna, Medical University of Graz, Medical University of Innsbruck and JKU. A fee exemption or equivalent legal status can change what an individual pays.
MedAT travel and test-day accommodation sit outside tuition. A complete first-year Austria budget also includes the residence application, health insurance, housing deposit and living costs. The MedAT payment is therefore the smallest of several separate cash dates.
Can prior study or a preparation course replace MedAT?
Usually not. A prior non-medical bachelor’s or master’s degree does not improve the MedAT rank, and a student already studying medicine generally still needs MedAT unless a separate higher-semester route applies.
The common admission information says a higher-semester application generally needs at least 180 ECTS from medicine or dentistry, while JKU uses a 150-ECTS threshold. Admission then depends on the university’s separate rules and available places. This is a narrow transfer route, not a way for a completed Indian science degree to bypass first-year MedAT.
The Vienna university preparation programme has another purpose. It prepares students for supplementary admission examinations that the university prescribes, including German or named school subjects, and currently requires at least A2 German to enter. MedAT preparation remains the separate official VMC route.
What should decide whether you pursue MedAT?
The decision should rest first on German exam readiness, then on your legal quota, Class XII admission route, chosen site and ability to follow one annual calendar. Tuition becomes relevant only after those conditions are workable.
- Rule out the route if an English-medium medical degree is essential.
- Identify the correct Human Medicine quota before treating a seat figure as relevant.
- Choose one location for its programme structure and practical fit, not an old success ratio.
- Establish how the chosen university will assess Indian Class XII and its documents.
- Use the free German VMC material to judge the real test level before paying for coaching.
- Replace every 2026 date, fee and seat count with the new annual regulation when it appears.
A place offer then leads into university admission and the Residence Permit Student process. Neither should be funded on the assumption that a MedAT score alone completes admission.
- Public Human Medicine is available at four Austrian locations, but the test, official preparation and degree are in German.
- C1 proof is checked at admission, yet strong German is already needed to compete in MedAT.
- For the usual Indian Class XII case, the relevant Human Medicine category is capped at 5 percent unless a recognised legal equality changes the classification.
- One annual test date creates one usable location and one site-specific rank list.
- Permission to write MedAT does not prove that Class XII, quota evidence, C1 and formal documents will pass university admission.
- In the latest complete cycle, registration cost EUR 110. Standard third-country tuition on the cited public pages is EUR 726.72 each semester, with the union charge added separately.
Frequently asked questions
Can international students study medicine in Austria?
Yes. An applicant with Indian citizenship and Indian Class XII can compete at Vienna, Innsbruck, Graz or JKU, usually through the non-EU category unless a recognised legal exception applies. A high site-specific rank, C1 German, school eligibility and correct documents are all required.
Can I study medicine in Austria in English?
Not through the public MedAT route. MedAT, the official preparation material and public medicine study are in German. C1 German is required for admission, and the exam itself demands strong German before the certificate is checked. An English university website is not evidence that the medical degree is English-medium.
What is MedAT for international students?
MedAT is Austria’s annual admission test for public Human Medicine and Dental Medicine. International applicants write the same German-language test at their chosen location. MedAT-H covers science, text comprehension, cognitive skills and social-emotional competence. The result enters only that location’s programme and quota rank list.
Can I register for MedAT before I have C1 German?
Yes. C1 proof is not required for online registration or test participation. It is checked at university admission after a place is won. This timing does not make German optional during preparation, because MedAT and its official materials are in German and the test must be understood under time pressure.
How many MedAT places are available to non-EU applicants?
No fixed number is reserved for Indians. Across Human Medicine, the category for applicants outside EU-equivalent status is capped at 5 percent, and every site ranks that category separately. The ceiling is not an acceptance rate, so the chosen location still requires a sufficiently high category rank.
Can I register for MedAT at more than one university?
Several registrations are not formally prohibited, but they do not create several attempts. Every location tests on the same day, the result stays with the site attended, and unused fees are not refunded. In practice, one annual cycle gives you one usable test location and one rank list.
How much does medicine in Austria cost?
Budget EUR 110 for the latest test registration and, under the standard third-country treatment shown by the cited public universities, EUR 726.72 for each semester of tuition. The separate union contribution and housing, insurance, residence and test-day travel still need their own cash lines.
Can a previous degree or medical study replace MedAT?
An earlier qualification outside medicine gives no MedAT ranking benefit and does not remove the test. A later-semester exception may exist only for substantial recognised medicine or dentistry study, the university’s credit threshold and an available place. Indian science graduates cannot use it as a general shortcut.
