Finland Student Visa Requirements: What Must You Prove?

A Finland student visa is legally a residence permit for studies when your course lasts more than 90 days. For an Indian applicant, admission is only the first clearance. The practical first step is one checklist recording available funds, unpaid tuition, insurance cover and the New Delhi identity appointment, so every document supports the same application.

The bank evidence causes the most avoidable confusion. For one academic year, Migri sets the normal living-funds floor at EUR 9,600, about INR 10.57 lakh at the ECB reference rate used on this page. That figure covers living funds only. Any unpaid first-year tuition sits on top of it. The Finland study guide connects this permit decision to course choice, applications and the wider move.

Do Indian students need a visa or a residence permit for Finland?

You need a residence permit for studies when you are a non-EU or non-EEA citizen coming for an eligible Finnish degree or vocational qualification lasting more than 90 days. A short entrance-exam or visit visa is not a substitute. Mainly online study that does not require your presence in Finland is not enough for the student permit.

Migri grants higher-education degree students a continuous A permit. Exchange students and students completing other degrees generally receive a temporary B permit. The permit can cover the full study duration when your passport remains valid long enough and you continue to meet every condition.

Your arrangement Usual route Key boundary
Finnish university or university of applied sciences (UAS) degree Residence permit for studies, normally A The programme requires your presence in Finland
Exchange or another eligible non-higher-education degree Residence permit for studies, generally B The exact permit type follows the study arrangement
Study lasting 90 days or less Visa rules may apply A long-term student permit is not the starting route
Doctoral or scientific research Often the researcher permit The hosting, employment and research arrangement decides the basis

The Finland PhD guide explains why a doctoral study right, paid researcher job and researcher permit must be separated. Bachelor’s and master’s applicants can continue with the student route below.

Your admission route does not change the permit evidence. A place from a research university or a university of applied sciences still leads to the same funds, insurance and identity tests when the student-permit route applies. The Finland master’s guide and Finland UAS guide explain the academic differences without turning them into immigration differences.

How much money must you show for a Finland student permit?

Migri currently requires EUR 800 for each month of study. For a study period of at least one year, EUR 9,600 must be available when you submit. Future part-time earnings cannot replace this first-permit proof.

Required balance = max(0, living-funds floor − documented living grant) + max(0, first-year tuition − tuition already paid − documented tuition scholarship)

Each subtraction belongs in only one place. A tuition waiver reduces tuition, but it does not reduce living funds. A grant reduces living funds only when its document says that it covers living costs. If your first-year tuition remains unpaid, the unpaid amount must be available in addition to the living money.

Worked permit-readiness calculationUse euro evidence for the legal test. INR is only a dated planning aid.
Input Example How it enters the calculation
Normal twelve-month living floor EUR 9,600 12 x EUR 800
Documented living grant EUR 2,000 Subtract from living funds
First-year tuition EUR 13,000 Add until paid or waived
Documented tuition scholarship EUR 6,500 Subtract from tuition only
Required own-account balance EUR 14,100 EUR 7,600 living funds plus EUR 6,500 tuition

At the ECB reference rate of EUR 1 to INR 110.1228 on 10 August 2026, EUR 14,100 was about INR 15.53 lakh. The bank’s transfer rate and charges will differ. The legal application still uses the euro amount, not a fixed rupee conversion.

The reduced EUR 400 or EUR 270 monthly floor applies only when the educational institution documents the free accommodation or the free accommodation and meals. It isn’t a general discount for a cheap room, a relative’s home or a private meal arrangement.

Whose account can hold the money?

Migri requires the money to be in your own bank account and freely usable in Finland, and does not accept a sponsorship agreement from a parent, relative, friend or employer as the funds proof. A parent can transfer money to you, but the evidence then needs to show the money in your account.

Question Evidence that answers it Common mismatch
Who owns and can use the funds? Your six-month statement showing your name, bank and currency A parent’s statement or sponsorship letter without money in your account
Where did a recent credit come from? Transfer trail, parent’s statement, income record or loan disbursement evidence A large unexplained deposit
Is tuition already settled? University receipt or scholarship certificate Using the same balance for unpaid tuition and living costs
Does a grant cover living costs? Grant document naming its value and purpose Counting a tuition-only waiver twice

Migri asks for a bank statement covering the previous six months and may ask about the origin of the money. A new parent transfer isn’t automatically disallowed, but an unexplained credit makes the file harder to assess. The Finland cost guide builds the realistic first-year budget beyond this legal floor, while the Finland scholarship guide separates fee waivers from living support.

The legal floor is not a comfort budget. Study in Finland currently recommends planning about EUR 900 to EUR 1,200 a month for living costs and warns against building the financial plan around uncertain part-time work. Housing choice and city can push your actual spending above Migri’s minimum.

Which insurance and documents does Migri require?

Your insurance category follows the duration of the studies, not the length of the first permit card. Migri currently sets two different coverage tests. The policy excess cannot exceed EUR 300, and the cover must be valid when you arrive.

Duration of studies Required coverage Validity check
Less than two years Medical expenses up to EUR 120,000 Valid on arrival for the required period
At least two years Pharmaceutical expenses up to EUR 40,000 Valid on arrival and uninterrupted for at least one year when studies exceed one year

A normal 90-day travel policy won’t meet the uninterrupted one-year condition for longer studies. Confirm the coverage wording, geographical area, start date and excess on the certificate rather than relying on the product name.

Core attachment set

Migri’s student permit application lists the following standard evidence. The online form can request further documents for the applicant’s circumstances.

  • Valid passport and a copy of its personal-data page
  • Passport photograph that meets the current photo requirements
  • Finnish institution’s acceptance certificate
  • Bank statement covering the previous six months
  • Insurance certificate with coverage, validity and excess details
  • Receipt for paid tuition or the institution’s scholarship certificate
  • Official translation for any document not in Finnish, Swedish or English

Legalisation is conditional, not automatic for every attachment. Finland Abroad states that Indian documents requiring legalisation need an Apostille from India’s Ministry of External Affairs. Follow the request for the exact document rather than Apostilling the entire file by default.

How do you apply for a Finland student permit from India?

A first permit for studies must normally be applied for while you are abroad. The online application and the in-person identity visit are both necessary. Migri moves the file into the processing queue after identity verification, not simply after online submission.

Finland Abroad directs applicants in India to the Finland Visa Application Centre operated by VFS Global in New Delhi for the appointment. The visit covers the passport, identity and biometric steps required for the first permit.

  1. Create the application in Enter Finland and select residence permit for studies.
  2. Upload the application-specific attachments and pay the electronic fee.
  3. Book the residence-permit appointment at the Finland Visa Application Centre operated by VFS Global in New Delhi.
  4. Attend with your passport and required originals for identity verification and biometrics.
  5. Follow Enter Finland messages and answer any request for additional information by its deadline.
  6. Wait for both the residence-permit decision and the separate D visa decision if you added a D visa.

Finland Abroad’s current 2026 tariff lists the adult student permit at EUR 600 or INR 66,000 online. A paper application is EUR 750 or INR 82,500. The VFS service charge can be separate, so the application fee isn’t the whole appointment cost.

The appointment is not an admission interview. Its purpose is identity, passport and biometric verification plus document handling. Appointment capacity can tighten near the intake, which makes early funds and insurance preparation more useful than waiting for every other student to receive an offer.

How long does a Finland student permit take?

Migri’s current estimate is one month for most first student permits and three months for a minority of cases. The stated statutory maximum is three months. The clock for practical planning begins only after the required identity visit, and missing evidence can still create delay.

Published signal What it means What it cannot promise
Most cases, one month The current central estimate for a complete first permit Your personal decision date
Minority of cases, three months Some applications need longer assessment That three months is an arrival guarantee
Uncertain funds can delay assessment Ownership, origin or double counting may need clarification That a high balance alone proves every condition

What does the Finland student visa success rate mean?

There isn’t an official rate that predicts an Indian student’s personal outcome. Migri reported a 9 per cent negative share across first student-permit decisions in 2025, but that was system-wide data, not an India-only success rate. It also describes past decisions under past files and rules.

Your useful question is whether today’s evidence proves every requirement. Acceptance, correct funds, paid or funded tuition, valid insurance, identity verification and truthful answers are decision inputs. A historic percentage cannot repair a weak input or guarantee a complete one.

A complete file can still take longer than the central estimate when Migri needs an external check or receives an unusually large application volume. Book travel with a changeable plan and keep university arrival instructions visible. The published estimate is a planning range, not compensation for a non-refundable flight or a promise that family decisions will arrive together.

Should you add a D visa to your student application?

Add a D visa only if travelling soon after approval without waiting abroad for the residence-permit card is worth the extra fee. Skip it if you can wait for the card or will not travel promptly. Migri can issue this optional entry visa for up to 100 days when both decisions are positive.

Add it when Skip or reconsider it when
You can travel soon after the positive decisions You expect to wait several weeks before travelling
You can collect the residence-permit card in Finland You need the physical card before departure for another purpose
The earlier card-free departure is worth the extra fee The extra cost has little value for your travel date
You can follow the passport-handling instructions You cannot leave your passport when the mission or VFS requires it

A D visa does not speed up the residence-permit assessment and is useful only after approval when you can travel promptly to collect the card in Finland. Finland Abroad India’s 2026 tariff lists EUR 95 or INR 10,400 online and EUR 120 or INR 13,200 on paper. Recheck both amounts before payment.

What can you do after the permit is granted?

A student permit currently allows paid work in any field for an average of 30 hours a week across the year. Migri also expresses the limit as about 120 hours monthly or 1,560 hours yearly. Full-time work in some weeks can fit only when the annual average remains within the limit.

You must meet the requirements for your permit during your entire stay in Finland. We are conducting post-decision monitoring of residence permits.Finnish Immigration Service

Monitoring can cover arrival, enrolment, study progress, continuing study right and other permit conditions. If an extension becomes necessary, Migri normally looks for about 45 ECTS credits per academic year from a higher-education student. ECTS is the European credit system used to measure study workload. The 45-credit figure is an extension signal, not a requirement before the first permit.

The work allowance should support, not finance, the decision to enrol. Finnish or Swedish ability, location and course workload can all affect job access. If work repeatedly slows the degree, it can damage the study progress that supports your continued permit.

What changes if your family comes with you?

Your spouse, registered partner and children under 18 use separate family applications. Migri warns that family members may receive their decisions later than the student. A family plan therefore needs its own appointment, funds, documents and travel fallback.

The household amount is much larger than the student’s EUR 800 monthly floor. Migri’s current example for a student, spouse and two children in the Helsinki region is EUR 2,500 a month, and family account evidence needs the previous six months of transactions, not only a balance certificate.

An eligible family member granted a permit based on family ties has unrestricted work rights. That future earning right doesn’t remove the family income requirement at application. The student and family files can move on different timelines even when submitted close together.

Which permit can you use after graduation?

Graduation does not automatically extend the student permit. The next basis depends on whether you already have work, trade or business activity, or need time to find it.

Your position Possible permit Current planning point
No job yet Permit to look for work or start a business Apply within five years, for up to two years, with EUR 800 monthly funds
Job, trade or business activity Permit for a person with a degree completed in Finland Match the application to the actual income and activity
Planning permanent residence One of the current permanent-residence paths A student A permit does not create automatic permanent residence

The jobseeking route can last up to two years and can be divided into as many as three parts of at least six months each. Its work rights are unrestricted. The completed-degree route also has unrestricted work rights when you meet its conditions.

Permanent-residence rules changed on 8 January 2026. The ordinary path now includes a longer A-permit residence, work-history and language test, with other distinct paths. A Finnish university degree can support a separate path only with its continuing permit, language and other conditions. Four years of study alone isn’t an automatic entitlement.

Which final cross-check catches document mismatches?

Read the application as an assessor would. The closing bank balance should reproduce the formula, every subtraction should have a receipt or award letter, recent credits should have a traceable source, and the insurance certificate should state the required cover, validity and excess. If two documents describe the same payment differently, resolve that discrepancy before submission. The Finland application guide covers the admission sequence that must finish before this permit file begins.

Key takeaways

  • The Finland student visa is a residence permit for studies when the course exceeds 90 days.
  • The normal one-year living-funds floor is EUR 9,600 in your own usable account.
  • Unpaid first-year tuition is added, while tuition waivers and living grants reduce different parts.
  • Insurance follows total study duration, and the application still needs identity verification in New Delhi.
  • A D visa changes card collection and travel timing, not residence-permit processing speed.
  • Work, family and post-graduation rights do not remove their separate funds and permit conditions.

Frequently asked questions

What bank balance does an Indian student need for Finland?

For studies lasting at least one year, the normal living-funds requirement is EUR 9,600. Add any unpaid first-year tuition. The money must normally be in your own usable account when you submit, supported by a statement covering the previous six months.

Can your parents sponsor a Finland student residence permit?

A parent’s sponsorship agreement or bank statement is not accepted as your first-permit funds proof. A parent can transfer money into your own account. Keep the transfer trail and source evidence because Migri can ask where a recent deposit came from.

Does a tuition scholarship reduce the EUR 9,600 rule?

A tuition-only scholarship reduces the unpaid tuition part, not the living-funds floor. A documented grant that specifically covers living costs can reduce the living amount. Read the award certificate carefully and don’t count the same support in both parts of the calculation.

Does Migri require IELTS for a student permit?

Migri’s standard student-permit attachment list does not set an IELTS score. The university decides academic and language admission requirements before issuing an offer. Your permit file then proves the study place, funds, tuition position, insurance and identity.

What is Finland’s student visa success rate for Indians?

No official percentage predicts an individual Indian application. Migri’s 2025 release reported a 9 per cent negative share across all first student permits, not an India-specific rate. A current, complete file matters more than a past system-wide outcome.

Can you work more than 30 hours during holidays?

You can work full-time in some weeks when your paid work still averages no more than 30 hours weekly across the year. Migri also expresses the allowance as about 1,560 hours annually. Study progress and continuing permit conditions still apply.

Does a D visa make the permit decision faster?

No. A D visa does not shorten residence-permit processing. After both decisions are positive, it can let you travel before the residence-permit card reaches India. It is useful only when you can travel soon and collect the card in Finland.

Can your spouse and children travel with you?

Eligible family members can apply separately, but their decisions may arrive later than yours. The family needs additional funds and its own documents. A family-ties permit gives unrestricted work rights after grant, but future earnings don’t replace application-stage income evidence.
