In Georgia the country, a Medical Doctor programme usually takes 6 years, but it can lead an Indian student back to medical registration in India only when it satisfies every NMC foreign-graduate condition. The unanswered question is whether a sixth-year clerkship counts under the NMC FMGL rule, which requires a separate 12-month internship after at least 54 months of medical education. The curriculum, degree date and internship certificate are among the documents needed for that assessment.
Georgian universities award a Medical Doctor degree that Indian families commonly call MBBS. A World Directory of Medical Schools listing or Georgian accreditation does not make that degree “NMC approved”. The National Medical Commission’s study-abroad guidance says it does not endorse a list of foreign medical universities.
Is an MBBS from Georgia valid in India?
An MBBS-equivalent degree from Georgia is not automatically valid for Indian registration. A new entrant comes under the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021, called FMGL in this guide. The exact programme must meet the course, internship, teaching-language, location, local-licence and completion-period conditions together.
NMC has not published a Georgia-specific decision in the material checked on 14 August 2026. The table covers selected high-risk checks before payment, not every FMGL condition and not proof that a university is approved.
| NMC requirement | What public Georgia evidence shows | Decision before payment |
|---|---|---|
| At least 54 months of medical education | Main English MD programmes publish six years and 360 ECTS, which does not prove the required theory, practical and clinical months | Match the full curriculum, subjects and clinical training to the NMC rule |
| Separate 12-month internship at the same institution | Several curricula place clerkship labels inside year six | Ask for the internship dates, certificate wording, degree date and the university’s responsibility for the placement |
| English as the medium of instruction | Named international MD programmes publish English as the programme language | Obtain the exact programme and cohort’s medium-of-instruction certificate |
| Eligible for the required Georgian registration or licence position | Georgian law separates supervised junior-doctor work from independent practice | Ask which Georgian registration document the university says you will receive after graduation |
| WDOMS listing or an “NMC-approved” label | WDOMS is a directory and NMC publishes no approved-university list | Reject this as proof of Indian registration eligibility |
The internship/clerkship and clinical posting and training are separate phases of practical learning.

Does Georgia’s sixth year satisfy NMC’s separate internship rule?
The published documents leave one important question unanswered. An Embassy of India advisory based on answers from Georgian authorities describes a six-year, 360-ECTS MD “including internship during the 6th, graduating year”. NMC’s FAQ describes the internship as a separate phase after the minimum course.
University curricula show why that wording matters. David Tvildiani Medical University assigns 60 ECTS to a sixth-year clinical clerkship, while Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University places five clerkships in its final semester. Both show clinical study inside the degree. Neither document alone proves that NMC will treat it as a separately timed internship.
Georgia allows a medical graduate to work as a junior doctor under supervision. The Georgian Law on Medical Practice requires further postgraduate training, an examination and a state certificate for independent practice. NMC has not said in the material checked here whether junior-doctor status meets its local-licence rule. The university therefore needs to identify the exact Georgian document its international graduates receive.
Knowledge of the official language of Georgia is mandatory for performing an independent medical practice in Georgia.
Law of Georgia on Medical Practice
Georgian programme accreditation is still essential, but it answers a different question. The National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement, usually called EQE, evaluates programmes in Georgia. WDOMS records medical schools and selected programme facts. Neither body decides Indian registration.
Listing of a medical school does not denote recognition, accreditation, or endorsement by the World Directory of Medical Schools.

Who is eligible for MBBS admission in Georgia, and is NEET required?
NEET is mandatory for an Indian student who may seek medical registration in India, even when a Georgian university does not require it for local admission. NMC applies this rule to Indian citizens and OCI candidates entering a foreign primary medical qualification on or after May 2018. The June 2026 FMGE bulletin says a qualifying NEET result acts as the eligibility certificate and remains valid for three years from its declaration.
There is no single Georgia-wide Class XII percentage, age rule or entrance test in the official material checked. Each university sets its own academic and English checks. For example, Tbilisi State Medical University asks for full secondary education evidence and at least B1 English proof. The requirement in the offer for your intake is the one that matters.
Indian applicants also need to separate local admission from the India-return rule. BAU International University Batumi asks Indian citizens for NEET, while another university may not use NEET in its own selection. NMC’s requirement still applies when the student plans to register in India. A DTMU regulation describes an English Chemistry-Biology test with a 51 per cent threshold, but the document’s approval date needs a fresh intake check.
Georgia changed its wider admission framework on 25 June 2026. Parliament adopted a recognised language-certificate requirement for foreign university entrants and a one-third annual-credit rule. The accepted certificates and implementation details need a fresh check for a 2027/28 application.
- India-return requirement: A qualifying NEET-UG result within the applicable validity period.
- Education evidence: A recognised Class XII or equivalent certificate with the subjects the chosen university and NMC route require.
- English evidence: The certificate or university examination accepted for the target intake.
- University selection evidence: A current offer from the exact English MD programme, with its EQE programme record.
- Document recognition: The translations, notarisation and Georgian recognition process named by the university.
- Intake evidence: A written 2027/28 opening date, deadline and fee schedule. Old programme pages do not prove that an intake is open.
A claim that all Georgian state universities have stopped admitting foreign students circulated widely in late 2025, but this research did not locate a final primary rule establishing a blanket closure. The safe published position is narrower. A visible TSMU or BSU programme page does not prove that the 2027/28 international intake is open, and an agent’s statement does not prove that it is closed.
How long does MBBS in Georgia take?
The standard English Georgian MD takes six academic years, usually 12 semesters and 360 ECTS. The European Commission defines ECTS as a credit system based on learning outcomes and workload. A 60-ECTS academic year does not mean every university arranges clinical work in the same way.
The table explains the common sequence, but the exact curriculum varies by university and intake.
| Stage | Typical place in six years | What the document should show |
|---|---|---|
| Basic medical sciences | Earlier semesters | Subjects, practical work, credits and assessment |
| Clinical medicine | Middle and later semesters | Named clinical subjects, hospitals, hours and supervised patient work |
| Clerkships or programme-labelled internship | Often year six | Start and end dates, credit load, hospital sites and supervision |
| Degree award | After programme completion | The date the MD qualification is formally granted |
TSMU publishes six years, 12 semesters and 360 ECTS. DTMU describes year six as a 60-ECTS clinical clerkship, while BSU places 30 ECTS of clerkships in semester twelve. The validity section explains why these different structures need a separate NMC check.
A family should read the semester plan as a calendar, not only as a credit total. The useful questions are when classroom teaching ends, when full-time clinical work starts, whether any holiday interrupts it, and when the degree is awarded. Two programmes can both carry 360 ECTS yet place their clerkships in different semesters and issue different completion documents. Those differences affect the student’s weekly workload, hospital schedule and graduation file even before an Indian regulator examines the qualification.
What is a realistic six-year budget for MBBS in Georgia?
A realistic six-year budget is the exact university payment schedule plus 72 months of living, recurring insurance and immigration charges, travel, currency movement and a separate India-return reserve. An annual tuition headline is not a course total, and a course total is not an all-in family budget.
The detailed cost of studying and living in Georgia keeps current programme fees, living models, immigration charges and exclusions in their original currencies. Use that model with the written offer for your cohort rather than reusing an older student’s rupee total.
For a medical decision, test the payment schedule against the family’s income in rupees. The relevant question is not whether the first year fits today. It is whether six annual transfers still fit after a weaker exchange rate, a tuition revision or a more expensive room. Obtain the due dates and refund terms in writing, and do not depend on uncertain part-time earnings to meet a compulsory university payment.
Run the same calculation with a higher housing case and a later graduation date. If either case requires repeated unsecured borrowing, the route is financially fragile even when the university’s first invoice looks manageable.
Keep the India-return amount outside the Georgia total because the examination and document process at graduation are not known for a new entrant. The separate reserve may need to cover document review, examination preparation, travel and living during the supervised Indian internship. No current primary source supports one universal figure for that later stage, so a fixed total would give false precision.
Does an English-medium Georgian MD remove the need for Georgian in clinical training?
No. English can be the language of instruction while Georgian still affects patient conversation, supervised examination and later practice rights. TSMU recommends learning Georgian for clinical rotations and patient interaction, while BAU includes 22 Georgian-language credits for foreign medical students.
A university’s clinic partnership count isn’t a measure of the patient contact each student receives. European University says its medicine faculty works with about 60 clinics, but the number doesn’t publish student access, case volume or hands-on permissions. The useful evidence is the clerkship timetable and the rules at each hospital.
- The curriculum names each clinical subject, its credits and its year.
- The university identifies the hospitals used for the target intake.
- The timetable distinguishes observation, simulation, bedside teaching and supervised procedures.
- The clinical policy explains patient consent and the student’s permitted role.
- The Georgian-language teaching reaches the level needed for patient history and instructions.
- The university states how it supports an international student who cannot understand a patient.
When comparing medical universities in Georgia, check the clinical timetable and accreditation record for the same programme and intake named in your offer.
What happens after graduation if you return to India?
If you returned today, you would first face a document check and FMGE, then complete the required internship in India. NMC deferred NExT in July 2023, while NBEMS conducted FMGE June 2026 on 28 June and declared the result on 7 July. A 2027 entrant returns much later, so today’s exam name is not a promise.
Different bodies handle the foreign qualification, examination, Indian internship and final registration. One approval does not complete the whole route.
| Step | Who decides | What the graduate proves | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Foreign university and Georgian authorities | Degree, course, internship and local registration or licence documents | Complete foreign qualification file |
| 2 | NBEMS under the current FMGE route | Citizenship, NEET or eligibility certificate, primary medical qualification and FMGL compliance documents | Eligibility to write the screening examination |
| 3 | NBEMS | Required examination performance | Pass certificate under the examination then in force |
| 4 | Indian regulator and internship institution | Eligibility for supervised compulsory rotating medical internship in India | At least 12 months of supervised internship for a post-2021 entrant |
| 5 | Indian registration authority | All registration conditions and completed internship | Registration under the rules then in force |
Current India-return sequence as of 14 August 2026
The June 2026 FMGE bulletin says post-November 2021 candidates are assessed under FMGL 2021 and can be declared ineligible if any provision is not met.
This is a document route as well as an examination route. A practical student archive includes admission records, semester transcripts, clinical postings, passport movement, residence permits and the internship certificate. The exam body can assess eligibility before admitting a graduate to the test, while the State Medical Council handles the later internship and registration stages.
A valid Georgia student visa and residence permit keeps your stay lawful. It doesn’t decide whether India will register the qualification.
What are the disadvantages of studying MBBS in Georgia?
The biggest risk is paying for six years before the university supplies enough evidence for an independent check of its internship and graduate documents. The university cannot decide how NMC will assess them. Currency exposure, patient-language needs and the separate internship in India add to that risk.
| Your position | Fit today | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The university supplies written course, separate-internship and Georgian graduate-status evidence, and the family can fund the six-year range | Reasonable to assess further | The file is stronger, but the university cannot guarantee NMC’s decision |
| The offer is attractive but the internship sits inside year six and the university gives only a verbal assurance | Not ready for payment | The decisive NMC match remains unresolved |
| The tuition is affordable but living costs require uncertain part-time work or repeated borrowing | Financially fragile | The family has not funded 72 months and the India-return stage |
| An agent relies on “NMC approved”, “WHO approved” or WDOMS-listed language and will not supply curriculum documents | Poor fit | Those labels do not prove Indian registration eligibility |
Georgia can remain on the shortlist when the university supplies those documents for an independent check and the family can fund the higher budget case. A low annual fee or an “NMC approved” sales label isn’t enough.
How should an Indian student verify a Georgian MBBS offer?
Before you pay, collect the documents below and get each answer in writing.
- Record the exact English MD programme name and obtain its current EQE accreditation decision.
- Obtain the full six-year curriculum with subjects, ECTS, clinical hours and hospital sites.
- Ask for the formal degree-award date and the internship or clerkship start and end dates.
- Ask for a sample internship completion certificate and written proof that the same university owns or certifies the placement.
- Obtain the Georgian authority’s document describing the graduate’s registration, junior-doctor or licence eligibility.
- Match the university documents line by line to FMGL 2021 and preserve the written response.
- Confirm the 2027/28 intake, English certificate, admission test, tuition, payment schedule and refund terms.
- Build a 72-month budget in USD and GEL, with permit renewals, insurance, travel and exchange spread outside tuition.
- Keep an India-return budget for the examination, preparation, travel, living and supervised internship without inventing a fixed total.
- Recheck NMC, NBEMS, EQE and the university immediately before enrolment because the applicant will graduate under a later examination and regulatory position.
The wider study in Georgia route also depends on cost and immigration. For a non-medical course, use the Georgia universities guide because NMC rules do not apply.
- Authorisation, accreditation and a WDOMS entry do not automatically make a Georgian MD valid for Indian registration.
- The FMGL rule requires at least 54 months of medical education and a separate 12-month internship at the same foreign institution.
- The Embassy advisory’s year-six description does not settle how NMC will assess every Georgian clerkship.
- The current India-return rules require NEET even when a university does not use it for local selection.
- An annual tuition figure is only one line in the full six-year family budget.
- Clinical rotations involve Georgian-speaking patients even when the degree is taught in English.
- FMGE operated in June 2026 and NExT remained deferred, so the future examination is unknown.
Frequently asked questions
Is MBBS from Georgia valid in India?
Only conditionally. The exact programme must satisfy the FMGL 2021 course, internship, language and local-licence conditions. A directory entry cannot establish that match.
Can an Indian student study MBBS in Georgia without NEET?
A university may not use NEET in its own selection, but an Indian citizen or OCI candidate planning Indian registration must qualify it before foreign admission. The June 2026 FMGE bulletin says that result serves as the eligibility certificate for three years.
How many years does MBBS in Georgia take?
A common English MD structure is 6 years, 12 semesters and 360 ECTS, as the TSMU programme document shows. Duration alone cannot establish how NMC will treat the internship.
What is the total MBBS fee in Georgia for Indian students?
There is no safe national total. Start with the exact programme’s annual fee, then add 72 months of living, immigration renewals, insurance, travel, currency movement and the separate India-return stage. A low tuition headline is not an all-in six-year budget.
Does WDOMS listing mean a Georgian university is NMC approved?
No. WDOMS describes itself as a directory, not an endorsement. NMC separately tells students to test the actual foreign course against its regulations.
Is medicine taught in English in Georgia?
Many international MD routes publish English instruction, but patient conversations can still require Georgian. TSMU recommends Georgian for clinical interaction, and BAU includes Georgian-language credits.
Will a Georgian medical graduate write FMGE or NExT?
NBEMS ran FMGE in June 2026, while NMC’s notice deferred NExT. The examination in force several years from now cannot be known today.
