“Masters in Italy” covers three very different things, and choosing the wrong one costs you months. There is the taught Laurea Magistrale, a two-year academic master worth 120 credits, the kind an Indian student takes straight after a bachelor. There is the business-school MBA or Master in Management, a professional degree with a fixed, high fee at schools like SDA Bocconi. And there is the PhD, which in Italy is not a course you pay for but a paid position you win by competition. This page separates the three, shows which one your background fits, and gives the real cost of each in rupees.

The thing that decides whether an Italian master is even open to you is not the fee. It is whether your Indian bachelor matches the specific programme’s subject requirements, and whether that particular university accepts a three-year Indian degree at all. Italy’s own bachelor is three years long, so in principle a three-year Indian degree fits, which surprises families used to Germany’s four-year rule. But a technical university can still ask Indian applicants for a four-year degree, and every master checks that your subjects line up. Getting your qualification read correctly, through a CIMEA Statement of Comparability, is the step to start early.

Which master’s route in Italy fits you, and how do they differ?

Match the route to where you are now. A recent bachelor’s graduate wanting an academic degree takes a taught Laurea Magistrale. Someone with a few years of work who wants a management qualification takes a business-school MBA. A master’s graduate who wants to do research takes a funded PhD. They differ on who gets in, whether they cost money or pay you, and how long they run.

Route What it is How you get in Taught in English? Indicative cost for an Indian student
Laurea Magistrale (taught MSc or MA) A two-year academic master, 120 credits, taken after a bachelor A comparable 3 or 4 year bachelor with matching subjects, plus English proof Many, strongest in engineering, computer science and data Public, income-scaled. About 157 to 3,943 euros a year (roughly 16,000 to 4 lakh rupees)
MBA or Master in Management (business school) A professional degree, 12 to 24 months A bachelor, usually work experience, and often GMAT or GRE Yes Fixed and high. An SDA Bocconi MBA is about 82,000 euros (about 82 lakh)
PhD (Dottorato di Ricerca) A research doctorate, at least 3 years, treated as a job A master’s degree and a ranked public competition with a research proposal Often, set by each programme You are paid. A scholarship of at least 16,243 euros a year gross (about 16 lakh), and no tuition

The rest of this page takes each route in turn, starting with the question that decides the academic ones, whether your Indian degree qualifies you at all.

Does a three-year Indian bachelor qualify you for an Italian master’s?

Usually yes. Italy’s own first cycle is a three-year, 180-credit bachelor, so a three-year Indian BA, BSc, BCom or BBA is treated as comparable and gives access to a two-year Laurea Magistrale, which is the second cycle. The government’s own description sets the rule plainly, access to a Laurea Magistrale course “requires a first-cycle degree or a comparable foreign degree”, where one Italian credit equals one ECTS and 60 credits are a full year. Duration is rarely what stops an Indian applicant here, unlike the four-year rule that blocks people applying to Germany.

What actually decides admission is two checks that most guides skip. The first is the curricular requirement, meaning your bachelor has to contain enough coursework in the subjects the master is built on. The second is what Italian universities call the adequacy of your personal preparation, a per-programme judgement of whether you are ready. The University of Bologna states both directly, that its degree programmes “always require verification of the requirements and adequacy of personal preparation“.

There is one real exception worth knowing before you apply. A technical university can set its own tougher rule for Indian degrees. Politecnico di Milano’s engineering school says for India it accepts “at least a 4-year bachelor degree”, that a three-year BSc “may be considered only if it is an Honours programme”, and that it wants a minimum GPA of 70 out of 100. A generalist university like Politecnico di Torino takes any first-cycle degree of at least 180 credits over three university years. Read the country rule on each university’s own page before you shortlist, because a three-year degree that clears Turin can fall short at Politecnico di Milano.

The recognition document is how the Italian side reads your Indian degree. Most public universities accept the CIMEA Statement of Comparability, which places your qualification against the Italian framework and confirms it sits at the first-cycle level that unlocks a master. Your university’s international office tells you which documents it accepts, and you usually choose one from that list, so the steps and timing of a CIMEA statement or a Declaration of Value are worth planning against your Universitaly pre-enrolment. If your final marksheet is not ready at application time, universities like Politecnico di Milano accept a provisional certificate for the application and ask for the full degree before you enrol.

Here is how to check your own case before you spend on anything.

  1. Open your target master’s admission page and find its curricular requirements, the minimum credits it wants in named subject areas.
  2. Add up your own coursework in those same subjects. Italian credits are ECTS, 60 to a full year, so a subject you studied across a full year of your bachelor is a substantial block.
  3. Confirm the university’s country rule for India and which recognition document it accepts, then order that document the day your final marks are in hand.

Bologna’s International Management master, for example, will admit you if you hold at least 36 credits in economics, management, mathematics and statistics subjects, then ranks you through a curriculum score and an aptitude interview. A commerce or BBA graduate usually clears that subject bar from their core papers, while a humanities graduate applying to the same master usually does not, even with a strong degree.

What is a Laurea Magistrale, and which ones are taught in English?

A Laurea Magistrale is Italy’s two-year academic master, worth 120 credits, the second cycle you take after a bachelor. Public universities run a wide set entirely in English, and the deepest choice for Indian applicants is in engineering, computer science and data, where whole departments teach in English and admit international students every year.

These are real, current examples at public universities, each confirmed as English-taught on the university’s own page.

Programme University Field
Computer Science and Engineering Politecnico di Milano Computing, with AI and business tracks
Artificial Intelligence University of Bologna AI and machine learning
Data Science and Engineering Politecnico di Torino Data science
Data Science University of Milano-Bicocca Data science
Computer Engineering University of Padua Computing
International Management University of Bologna Management

For an English-taught master you prove your English with a standard test, and the bar is set per university. Politecnico di Milano asks for IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 78, while the University of Bologna asks for a B2 level, which is roughly IELTS 6.0. You do not sit the TOLC, the online admission test used for many bachelor’s courses, because a master is decided on your existing coursework and preparation, not a fresh entrance test. Check the exact score and any subject conditions on your specific programme page, since they move year to year. What does a public master’s degree cost for an Indian student?

Less than most families fear, but not automatically near-zero, because how much you pay depends on the university’s policy toward non-EU students who studied abroad. Italian public universities do not charge one flat tuition. They scale the annual fee to family income, measured by a number called the ISEE, and a family with income and property in India files a substitute version called the ISEE parificato. Where a low ISEE brings the fee down, a public master can cost only the regional tax and stamp of about 157 euros a year, roughly 16,000 rupees. Rupee figures here use a rate of about 100 rupees to the euro as of July 2026.

The catch is that some universities treat a self-funded non-EU student differently. At the University of Bologna, an ISEE at or below 27,000 euros means you pay only the fixed 157.04 euros for the year, and Bologna also offers a reduced fixed fee, around 600 to 1,400 euros plus 157, to students from developing and non-OECD countries. At Politecnico di Milano the picture is stricter. A non-EU student admitted with a foreign bachelor and no scholarship “is required to pay the maximum amount“, about 3,943 euros a year, even after filing the ISEE parificato. So the same document that makes Bologna nearly free leaves you at the top band at Polimi.

Public university Yearly fee for an Indian master’s student In rupees (approx)
Bologna, low ISEE 157.04 euros about 16,000
Bologna, reduced non-EU fee about 757 to 1,557 euros about 76,000 to 1.6 lakh
Politecnico di Milano, self-funded non-EU about 3,943 euros about 4 lakh

Two things make the difference. First, you must actually file the ISEE parificato, through an affiliated tax centre for Politecnico di Milano or the ER.GO portal for Bologna, with your Indian income and property documents translated and legalised, and you must hit the autumn deadline or you are billed the full fee for the year. Second, a scholarship changes the maths entirely. Italy’s MAECI government scholarship and Invest Your Talent in Italy, both open to Indian master’s applicants, pay a stipend and usually waive tuition, and a regional right-to-study grant can add cash, a subsidised room and meals on top. A useful detail for the visa, the same scholarship award letter is accepted at the consulate as proof of funds, so one document does two jobs.

How much does an MBA or Master in Management in Italy cost?

An Italian business-school MBA is a fixed, high, whole-programme fee, and it is a different product from an academic master. An MBA is a professional degree you take after some years of work, usually with a GMAT or GRE score, while a Master in Management or a Laurea Magistrale is an academic degree you take straight after your bachelor. The MBA fee does not scale with income the way public tuition does.

Programme Fee Length and entry
SDA Bocconi Full-Time MBA 82,000 euros for the programme (about 82 lakh) 12 to 15 months. GMAT or GRE, and around 6 years of work on average
POLIMI GSoM Full-Time MBA 54,000 euros for the programme (about 54 lakh) 12 months. At least 3 years of work, no GMAT required
Bocconi MSc International Management 18,550 euros a year (about 18.5 lakh) 2 years, 120 credits. Straight after a bachelor, no work needed

Read the fee basis carefully, because it changes what you actually pay. The two MBAs quote a single whole-programme price, so 82,000 or 54,000 euros is the total. The Bocconi Master of Science quotes a yearly fee, so 18,550 euros a year is about 37,100 euros across the two-year degree before any waiver. POLIMI GSoM is the former MIP business school, now the graduate school of management at Politecnico di Milano. Bocconi does layer income-based partial waivers on its Master of Science fee, so the net can come down for a lower-income family, but the headline price is the same for Indian and EU students alike.

How does a PhD in Italy work, and does it pay you?

An Italian PhD pays you. A Dottorato di Ricerca is the third cycle, it runs at least three years, and a funded place comes with a scholarship, the borsa di dottorato, of at least 16,243 euros a year gross, set by a national decree. That is about 16 lakh rupees a year, paid in monthly instalments of roughly 1,195 euros after the pension contribution, and it is exempt from Italian income tax. If your research takes you abroad for an approved period, the scholarship rises by 50 percent for those months.

You get in by a public competition, not an application you simply submit. Each university publishes a call, the bando, for a set of positions, and candidates are ranked on their qualifications, a written research proposal and an interview, as the European Commission’s Eurydice describes for Italy’s third cycle. Not every seat is funded. A call lists positions with a scholarship and, sometimes, positions without one, so aim for a funded seat and read the bando for how many there are. To enter you need a master’s degree, and an Indian master is assessed for equivalence by the PhD board, again using a CIMEA statement or a Declaration of Value.

Because the position is treated as paid research work, a PhD candidate pays no tuition, only the small regional tax and stamp that every student pays, and scholarship holders are often exempt even from that. So the money runs the opposite way to a taught master or an MBA. Those cost you, while a funded PhD pays you for three years.

Key takeaways

  • “Masters in Italy” means three separate things, a two-year academic Laurea Magistrale, a fixed-fee business-school MBA or Master in Management, and a paid PhD, and they suit different stages of your career.
  • A three-year Indian bachelor usually qualifies you for an Italian master, because Italy’s own bachelor is three years, but the subject match and each university’s country rule decide it, not the number of years.
  • Politecnico di Milano asks Indian applicants for a four-year degree and a minimum GPA, while generalist universities like Turin accept any 180-credit three-year degree, so the same degree can fit one and not another.
  • A public master can cost as little as 157 euros a year at Bologna on a low ISEE, but a self-funded non-EU student at Politecnico di Milano pays the top band of about 3,943 euros even with the ISEE parificato.
  • Business-school MBAs are fixed whole-programme fees, about 82,000 euros at SDA Bocconi and 54,000 at POLIMI GSoM, and usually need work experience.
  • An Italian PhD is a paid position of at least 16,243 euros a year gross, tax-free, entered by public competition, with no tuition to pay.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do a master’s in Italy with a 3-year bachelor?

Usually yes. Italy’s own bachelor is three years and 180 credits, so a three-year Indian BA, BSc, BCom or BBA is treated as comparable and can access a two-year Laurea Magistrale. What decides admission is whether your subjects match the master and each university’s own rule, since some technical schools ask Indian applicants for a four-year degree.

Are master’s degrees in Italy taught in English?

Many are, especially in engineering, computer science and data at public universities like Politecnico di Milano, Bologna, Turin and Milano-Bicocca. You prove your English with a standard test, usually IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 78, with the exact bar set by each university. A master is admitted on your coursework, not a TOLC entrance test.

How much does a master’s in Italy cost for Indian students?

At public universities the fee is scaled to family income through the ISEE. On a low income it can be about 157 euros a year at Bologna, roughly 16,000 rupees, though a self-funded non-EU student at Politecnico di Milano pays the top band of about 3,943 euros. Business-school MBAs are far higher, from 54,000 euros upward.

What is the difference between a Laurea Magistrale and an MBA in Italy?

A Laurea Magistrale is a two-year academic master worth 120 credits, taken straight after a bachelor, and public ones are income-scaled. An MBA is a professional business degree taken after some years of work, usually with a GMAT or GRE, and it carries a fixed, high, whole-programme fee at private schools like SDA Bocconi or POLIMI GSoM.

How much is an MBA in Italy?

The flagship full-time MBAs are fixed whole-programme fees. SDA Bocconi’s is about 82,000 euros, roughly 82 lakh rupees, and POLIMI GSoM’s is about 54,000 euros. Both usually need work experience, and SDA Bocconi asks for a GMAT or GRE score. These fees do not scale with income the way public tuition does.

Is a PhD in Italy funded for international students?

Funded places carry a scholarship of at least 16,243 euros a year gross, set by national decree, paid monthly and exempt from Italian income tax. You win a place through a public competition ranked on qualifications, a research proposal and an interview. Not every seat is funded, so aim for one with a scholarship, and PhD candidates pay no tuition.

Do I need GMAT or IELTS for a master’s in Italy?

For an English-taught academic master you need an English test, usually IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL iBT 78, but not a GMAT. GMAT or GRE is asked mainly by business schools for an MBA, such as SDA Bocconi. Each programme sets its own scores and any subject conditions, so confirm on your specific course page.
