The Swedish Migration Agency treats SEK 10,656 as the minimum for every month covered by a 2026 application. For twelve months, that is SEK 127,872. A spouse or cohabiting partner adds SEK 4,440 a month, and each accompanying child adds SEK 2,664.
Free food or housing can reduce the legal figure only in the circumstances the agency accepts. The 2026 reductions are SEK 2,960 a month for free food and SEK 4,736 for free housing supplied through the institution or an eligible exchange organisation. A relative promising you a room isn’t automatically the same thing.
Stockholm deserves a separate check because the university’s own advice is higher. Stockholm University recommends at least SEK 11,214 a month. That is SEK 558 above the permit floor each month, or SEK 6,696 across a year. It doesn’t prove every Stockholm student will spend that amount, but it is a useful warning against building a zero-buffer budget.

The examples also show why a university name is not a reliable price category. Stockholm publishes different annual amounts for different subject groups, while Gothenburg, Linköping and Malmö examples are expressed as complete programme totals. A fair comparison first converts every figure to the same period and then uses the exact subject. Annual figures need to be compared with annual figures, and totals with totals. Malmö’s two-year range is not twice as expensive as a one-year Stockholm number just because the printed total is larger. When does each Sweden study payment happen?
The permit application sits behind the first tuition instalment, so the scholarship result, university invoice and maintenance evidence have to be planned together.
- Application round. Pay SEK 900 to University Admissions. One fee covers the programmes in that round, not one programme.
- Selection result. Receive an offer and the university’s tuition invoice. Fee-paying applicants can still appear as conditionally admitted.
- Scholarship result. Apply the confirmed tuition reduction, if any, before calculating the amount still due. Do not spend an unconfirmed award.
- First tuition instalment. Pay the university by its deadline. University Admissions does not issue tuition invoices.
- Residence permit. The university reports the payment, then you apply with the required maintenance evidence and SEK 1,500 fee.
- Housing offer. Pay only after checking the written institutional or landlord terms, and keep enough accessible money for arrival.
The application fee is SEK 900 each semester in which you apply, even if you paid it in an earlier semester. There is no general waiver for an Indian fee-paying applicant. Tuition goes directly to the university after admission.

The SEK 4,000 housing case uses the lower end of Lund’s published range only to show how the total changes. It does not confirm that a room at that price will be available to you. Lund guarantees university accommodation only for specified groups, and Stockholm lets eligible tuition-fee-paying students apply but does not guarantee an offer. The rent and contract terms in an actual housing offer determine whether the budget can be reduced.
Before accepting a place, record the rent, what utilities are included, deposit, first payment date, contract start and contract end. A cheaper programme with an uncovered month in temporary accommodation can lose part of its fee advantage. Add a separate arrival buffer rather than hiding that uncertainty inside food.
How should you convert SEK costs into rupees?

Your bank’s selling rate will be worse than the reference rate, and it may add transfer charges. Recalculate on the day the university invoice is paid and keep a small currency buffer.
