An Indian national admitted to full-time, on-site higher education in Sweden for more than 3 months normally needs a residence permit before travel, and 30 credits per semester counts as full time. A fee-paying applicant becomes finally admitted for permit purposes only after the required tuition instalment is paid and reported.

For a 2026 application, maintenance starts at SEK 10,656 a month, or SEK 127,872 for 12 months, and the non-refundable adult fee is SEK 1,500, about INR 15,000. The same Migration Agency rule adds SEK 4,440 a month for one accompanying partner and SEK 2,664 for each child.

Do Indian students need a residence permit or a visa?

Yes, most Indian students need a residence permit when the programme lasts more than three months. For a course lasting under three months, check whether an entry visa is required instead. Distance study from India cannot support this permit, and doctoral study has a separate category. The Swedish Migration Agency’s higher-education route gives the current conditions.

For permit purposes, your admission evidence must show full-time study on site in Sweden. At a university or university college, 30 credits per semester counts as full-time. Where tuition applies, the Migration Agency considers you finally admitted only after the fee has been paid and the university has reported payment.

The display on Universityadmissions.se can still say “Conditionally admitted” after payment because that portal does not record the university’s receipt of the first instalment. That display label is different from the final-admission evidence used for the permit. The admission decision and university payment confirmation therefore belong together. The official tuition instructions explain the distinction, while the Sweden university application sequence covers the earlier admissions process.

Are you ready to apply for the permit?

This five-point permit-readiness calculator applies before the non-refundable fee is paid. A point is earned only when the statement is already true and supported by evidence. A promise that money, insurance or a renewed passport will arrive later doesn’t earn the point.

  1. Final admission. Your decision states full-time study on site in Sweden.
  2. Tuition settled. You have paid the required first instalment and kept the university confirmation.
  3. Maintenance complete. Your accessible funds cover every month you request, including family additions.
  4. Insurance resolved. For study under one year, you have comprehensive cover or proof that you applied for it. For longer study, you have a population-registration plan.
  5. Passport and timing ready. Your signed passport covers the requested period and your calendar leaves room for the decision and physical card.
Your permit-readiness resultUse the lowest result that applies. A complete score does not guarantee approval.
Score Assessment Next action
5 out of 5 Ready to file Recheck dates, names, currencies and translations, then submit without delay.
4 out of 5 One important item is missing Obtain the missing evidence before paying the fee.
0 to 3 out of 5 Not ready Resolve admission, tuition, funds or passport validity before treating travel dates as firm.

How much money must you show in 2026?

The requested permit months, not the programme’s headline length, control this calculation. Tuition sits outside the maintenance amount and should already be paid where charged. The real cost of living in Sweden can be higher than the immigration floor.

Monthly living-funds component Official amount per month (SEK) Approx. amount per month (INR)
Student SEK 10,656 About INR 1.06 lakh
Accompanying spouse or cohabiting partner Add SEK 4,440 Add about INR 44,400
Each accompanying child Add SEK 2,664 Add about INR 26,600
Qualifying free food Reduce by SEK 2,960 Reduce by about INR 29,600
Qualifying free housing Reduce by SEK 4,736 Reduce by about INR 47,300

Approximate rupee amounts use SEK 1 = INR 9.99 on 4 August 2026.

Estimated monthly requirement = SEK 10,656 + SEK 4,440 for one accompanying partner + SEK 2,664 for each accompanying child − qualifying institutional food and housing reductions

Estimated funds to show = estimated monthly requirement × whole months requested

For a 12-month permit, a student applying alone estimates SEK 10,656 × 12, which is SEK 127,872, about INR 12.78 lakh. A student applying with one partner estimates SEK 15,096 × 12, which is SEK 181,152, about INR 18.10 lakh. Add tuition only when planning the household budget, not as though it were part of this living-funds formula.

The food and housing reductions are narrow. They apply when the free benefit comes through the higher-education institution or an organisation working for international exchange. Free meals from a relative and a discounted private room do not qualify. The Migration Agency’s 2026 maintenance table carries the current amounts and family additions.

These are whole-month planning estimates. The public guidance does not publish a day rate or say how it rounds a partial month. The exact requested period and the amount shown in the current application control the evidence, rather than an invented daily figure.

Every INR conversion here uses the European Central Bank reference rates for 4 August 2026. EUR 1 equalled SEK 10.9925 and INR 109.8285, which gives roughly INR 9.99 for SEK 1. Bank conversion and transfer charges will differ.

Which proof of funds will Sweden accept?

You can combine the accepted maintenance sources, but you can’t count tuition already paid as living funds still available to you.

Funding source Evidence to prepare Issue to resolve
Personal bank assets A statement with holder, bank, issue date, balance and currency The money must remain withdrawable during the permit period
Scholarship Provider, recipient, period, amount, payment timing and living-cost allocation A tuition-only scholarship does not cover maintenance
Student grant or loan from India Provider, recipient, period, schedule, total and living-cost share A sanction with no usable disbursement details can leave the amount unclear
Institutional sponsor Hosting organisation, amount, schedule, period and any performance condition A private relative is not this type of sponsor
Current employment income Employment certificate and payslips A future job offer alone is not accepted income proof
Mixed funding Each source document plus one summary showing how the amounts combine Do not count the same rupee in two categories

A first-time application bank statement must be issued no more than four months before the date you want the permit to begin. If you request 1 August, the Agency’s example says the statement should be dated no earlier than 1 April. It must show the account holder, bank, issue date, current balance and currency.

Private family funding is where the official wording matters most.

“Private individuals are not accepted as sponsors. Money from private individuals, such as relatives, must be registered as personal bank assets.”

That means a parent can provide the money, but it should be transferred into an account in your name that you can access, then evidenced there. An account jointly withdrawable by you and an accompanying partner can also qualify. A parent does not become an approved sponsor by writing a support letter.

Funds, shares, credit and microfinance-bank assets are not approved as personal bank assets. A fixed deposit also fails if it remains frozen during the permit period.

A qualifying Sweden scholarship can reduce what must sit in your bank, but its letter should distinguish tuition support from living support and state the amount allocated to living costs.

When do you need health insurance?

If your planned studies last less than one year, the permit file needs either comprehensive health insurance for the whole stay or evidence that you have applied for it. The eventual policy must cover emergency and other medical care, hospitalisation, emergency dental care and medical repatriation. A policy missing one of those categories may not meet the Migration Agency insurance test.

For study lasting at least one year, use the Swedish Tax Agency moving process after arrival. A long study permit does not itself create a personal identity number, so plan suitable cover for any period before population registration is settled.

How do you apply from India?

Apply online through the Swedish Migration Agency only after you can document all five readiness points. The application asks which Swedish mission you can visit if a passport check or interview is needed. An interview is possible, not an automatic final stage for every student.

  1. Check the passport. It must be valid, signed and long enough for the period you request because the permit cannot run beyond it.
  2. Confirm admission and tuition. Keep the final full-time on-site admission decision and the university’s payment confirmation.
  3. Assemble financial evidence. Match the requested months, family members and accepted sources without counting tuition twice.
  4. Add insurance where required. For study under one year, attach the policy or evidence that you applied for it. The cover must span the full stay and include the named medical categories.
  5. Submit and pay online. The adult fee is SEK 1,500, about INR 15,000. A child under 18 pays SEK 750, about INR 7,500. Rejection does not trigger a refund.
  6. Check language and family records. Include certified Swedish or English translations with original-language copies, plus relationship evidence where family applies.
  7. Follow the identity instruction. Complete the requested passport check and card biometrics in the stated sequence.

India is currently among the passport nationalities eligible for digital checking, but the applicant cannot select it. The route requires an online application, a chip-enabled passport and a personal email invitation. Its link lasts seven days and uses the Freja app with an NFC-capable device. Without an invitation, follow the instruction for an in-person check, normally through New Delhi for a resident of India.

The New Delhi passport and biometrics guidance warns that giving biometrics before passport verification is requested can create a second visit. A digital check verifies the passport only. As an Indian citizen who needs an entry visa, you must still follow the photograph and fingerprint instructions for the residence-permit card and wait for that card before travel.

How long will the decision and card take?

The current Migration Agency statistic says 75% of recently decided first-time higher-education cases were decided within two months. It covers decisions made over the previous 12 months, so it isn’t an India-specific promise or a deadline. Applications are processed in receipt order and cannot be prioritised.

Card production begins after an approval and usable biometrics. Delivery to an embassy can take up to four weeks. The approved-study instructions require a visa-needed traveller to present the card with a valid passport, while the New Delhi card instructions give the current local collection arrangements.

What changes after the permit is approved?

The standard maximum is one or two years depending on the institution. The decision cannot extend beyond passport validity. It normally follows the study period, but when it covers the entire programme the Agency adds a separate two-week completion and departure allowance. A programme longer than the maximum permit period therefore needs an extension.

For a bachelor or master permit granted on or after 11 June 2026, ordinary work during term is capped at 15 hours a week. The Migration Agency’s current work conditions list exceptions for programme-connected work and work in June, July and August. It isn’t an unlimited work right.

The Sweden post-study work route begins only after the qualifying programme is completed.

After arrival, the population-registration process applies when the planned move qualifies. The passport and permit card must remain valid for travel, the study and work conditions in the decision continue to apply, and the Migration Agency needs the Swedish address when the current rules require it. A residence-permit card proves permission to stay, but it is not a passport.

Key takeaways

  • Submit only when every point in the readiness check is documented.
  • Calculate maintenance for the requested months and use the amount shown in the current application for any partial month.
  • Keep tuition payment separate from living funds and move private family money before producing the bank statement.
  • Follow the identity steps in the order sent and leave time for card production after approval.
  • Check the decision for permit dates, work conditions and address duties after arrival.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Sweden student visa the same as a residence permit?

No. A student visa and a residence permit are different permissions. For higher-education study lasting more than three months, an Indian student normally applies for a residence permit. A short course can follow different entry rules, so check the permission required for the exact course length before applying.

Does paid tuition count as Sweden maintenance money?

No. The university reports the tuition payment separately, while the permit application tests the living money for the requested period. Use the family calculator for the applicable maintenance total and keep proof for each funding source. The same money cannot be counted as both paid tuition and available living funds.

Is a parent’s bank statement enough for the permit?

No. The Migration Agency does not treat a private individual as a sponsor. For an adult student relying on family money, a parent’s statement alone does not show personal bank assets that the student can withdraw during the permit period.

Is IELTS required for the Sweden residence permit?

The residence-permit requirements do not set a separate IELTS score. Your university decides whether your English evidence meets its admission rules. If the programme requires IELTS or another test, meet that requirement for admission. Once the institution has admitted you, the permit route does not add a second published English score.

Is a Sweden student visa interview compulsory in India?

No. The Migration Agency requests an interview only when needed. Your application names the Swedish mission you can attend. Passport verification may be digital by invitation or in person, but that identity step should not be described as a compulsory student interview for every Indian applicant.

Can a spouse and children apply with the student?

Yes. A spouse, registered or cohabiting partner, and children under 18 may normally apply with the student. Include passports, relationship evidence and maintenance covering the whole family. A child whose other legal guardian remains behind may also require consent or custody documents.

Does the student work limit apply to a Sweden PhD?

No. Doctoral study has a separate permit and employment route. The 15-hour weekly limit for bachelor’s and master’s permits should not be applied to a PhD position. Check the conditions in the doctoral permit decision and employment contract before accepting work outside the funded position.
