Sweden’s post-study route lets an eligible graduate apply from inside the country for up to 1 year to seek work or explore a business after completing a university programme of at least 2 semesters, provided the application reaches the Migration Agency before the study permit expires.

A 12-month application in 2026 requires maintenance of SEK 127,872, based on SEK 10,656 a month, plus the SEK 1,500 adult fee, about INR 15,000. The later work-permit stage is a separate application: the former-student route tests one signed job offer against at least SEK 28,725 a month and any higher collective-agreement or normal occupation rate.

What is Sweden’s post-study work route?

Sweden separates the graduate route into two applications. The first is officially a residence permit to seek employment or investigate starting a business after completing higher education. It requires its own application, fee and decision. The second is an employer-led work-permit application based on one qualifying employment contract.

A graduate who still holds the relevant Swedish university-study permit or post-study permit may apply for a work permit from inside Sweden before the current permit expires. The Migration Agency calls this the former-student route. Someone who has already left Sweden normally uses the ordinary employee route instead. The Migration Agency graduate conditions and former-student work conditions publish the two applications separately.

Who can apply after graduating?

The post-study permit is for someone who currently holds a Swedish residence permit for higher-education studies, is physically in Sweden and applies before that permit expires. The completed programme must have been at a university or university college and lasted at least two semesters. Higher vocational education is not included in this route.

Completion is stricter than finishing the last scheduled teaching week. The Migration Agency requires the entire programme to which you were first admitted and passing results in all courses.

“You must have completed the entire education programme to which you were first admitted and have passed all your courses.”

A degree certificate, results certificate or Ladok extract can show completion. When you use a Ladok extract, your education provider must confirm that the programme is complete.

Requirement What it means in practice Common error
Current status You hold the relevant Swedish higher-education study permit Applying after the permit has expired
Location You submit while you are inside Sweden Leaving Sweden and assuming the inside route remains available
Programme length Your university programme lasted at least two semesters Using a short or higher-vocational course
Completion You finished the original programme and passed every course Counting partial completion as a degree
Purpose You will seek work or explore a Swedish business Treating the permit as a general gap year
Resources Your passport, funds and any required insurance cover the request Requesting months beyond passport or financial evidence

Until the qualifying programme is complete, your Sweden student residence permit remains the status you must monitor.

What is the graduation-to-employment timeline?

Work backwards from the expiry date printed on your current permit card and decision. Your post-study application must reach the Migration Agency while you are in Sweden and before that date. A university ceremony or delayed transcript does not extend the study permit.

The table follows one graduate from programme completion to an approved work permit. The first four steps secure the post-study permit. The remaining steps cover the job search and the separate work-permit application.

Step What happens When What you do
1 The university confirms that you completed the full programme As soon as final results are available Request the degree certificate, results certificate or confirmed Ladok extract
2 You submit the post-study application from inside Sweden Before your current study permit expires File the application on time, even if the final completion document will follow
3 The Migration Agency receives any missing completion evidence After an on-time application when the evidence was delayed Upload the confirmed completion document as soon as it is issued
4 Your funds and insurance are checked for the period requested For every month in the application Show accessible maintenance funds and any required insurance
5 You look for qualifying work or explore a business Within the dates granted on the post-study permit Target suitable employers and keep the permit and passport expiry dates visible
6 You receive one employment offer that may support a work permit Before relying on the job for immigration Check the signed contract, salary, employment conditions and four employer insurances
7 The employer starts the separate work-permit application Before your current permit expires Wait for the employer and union steps, then complete and submit your part
8 Your right to work while the application is pending is checked After you submit the work-permit application Use only an exemption that clearly applies to your current permit, employer and occupation. Otherwise, ask the Migration Agency
9 You move to work-permit status After the work-permit decision Check the approved employment and permit dates, then keep evidence needed for an extension

The job-search permit can be granted for up to one year. A first work permit can normally be granted for up to two years. Passport validity limits both, and the work permit also cannot run beyond the contract. Among recently decided complete former-student applications, 75 percent were decided within four months. Incomplete cases show ten months for the same share. These published waiting statistics describe past decisions, not a personal deadline.

How much money must you show?

The 2026 monthly components below apply to the entire requested period. They are permit evidence, not a prediction of the actual cost of living in Sweden.

Applicant group Monthly funds (SEK) 12 months (SEK)
Graduate only SEK 10,656 SEK 127,872
Graduate and partner SEK 15,096 SEK 181,152
Graduate, partner and one child SEK 17,760 SEK 213,120

Estimated maintenance = (SEK 10,656 + SEK 4,440 for one partner + SEK 2,664 for each child) × whole months requested

For a worked example, a graduate applying alone for ten whole months estimates SEK 10,656 × 10, which is SEK 106,560, about INR 10.65 lakh. The public guidance does not publish a day rate or partial-month rounding rule, so follow the amount shown in the live application.

Where your total continuous Swedish permit period is under one year, you must also have, or have applied for, comprehensive insurance covering medical care, hospitalisation, emergency dental treatment and medical repatriation.

The application fee is SEK 1,500 for an adult, about INR 15,000, and SEK 750 for a child. It is not refunded after refusal. Every INR figure here uses the European Central Bank reference rates for 4 August 2026, which imply roughly INR 9.99 for SEK 1. Your bank’s rate and transfer charges will differ.

Which documents should you prepare?

Build two folders rather than one mixed file. The first proves eligibility for the post-study period. The second should become work-permit-ready while you search. This separation makes missing evidence visible before a deadline.

Document Post-study application Later work application
Passport Copies showing identity, validity and relevant details Valid passport that covers the requested work period
Study completion Degree, results certificate or confirmed Ladok extract Digital degree information verifiable through Ladok where available
Maintenance Bank evidence or another accepted source Not a substitute for the required salary and employment terms
Insurance Comprehensive policy or application evidence where required Employer’s four named policies by the work start
Employment contract Relevant when current job income supports maintenance One signed contract for the permit job
Family evidence Passports, relationships and full-period family funds Use the separate family rules when preparing the work-permit application

Documents should be in Swedish or English. If you translate another language, use a certified translation and include the original-language document. Scan every page clearly and make names, dates and passport numbers consistent. A perfect CV cannot cure a late residence application, and a timely application can’t cure an incomplete degree.

A simple expiry sheet contains the study-permit end date, passport end date, application-submission receipt and every supplement request.

The granted period is a limited campaign, not twelve identical months. The first 30 days can define two job families, rebuild the CV around evidence of results, create a one-page cover-letter base and list 40 employers. By day 60, response rates by role and language requirement reveal the stronger route. By day 90, scarce interviews indicate that the occupation, employer size or location needs to widen.

  1. Search official listings. Use Platsbanken and set alerts for role families, not one narrow job title.
  2. Register your profile. If eligible, register as a jobseeker and make your skills searchable.
  3. Use several channels. Add staffing agencies, recruitment meetings and carefully targeted spontaneous applications.
  4. Check the language requirement. Many vacancies expect Swedish, while some technical and international workplaces use English.
  5. Ask salary questions early. Identify the relevant collective agreement or normal salary for that occupation and industry before the final offer.
  6. Keep permit dates visible. Tell a serious employer early enough for its documents and union-comment step.

The Swedish Public Employment Service job guide explains Platsbanken, CVs, cover letters and the language pattern. Its occupation and location guidance encourages a wider geographic search and includes current labour-market tools. Those signals can revise a search, but they do not promise that any listed occupation will sponsor a candidate.

If you’re exploring a business, use the government’s Verksamt start-up checklist to compare business forms, make a budget and identify registrations. The post-study permit lets you investigate this possibility. It does not guarantee a later self-employed residence permit, so test the business against that separate route before committing capital.

When can you switch to a work permit?

You can apply for the work permit without leaving Sweden when you hold the relevant university-study or post-study permit, have completed at least two semesters of Swedish higher education and submit before the current permit expires. The job must be supported by one signed employment contract.

The employer begins the online process, supplies employment details, gives the relevant trade union an opportunity to comment and sends you a link. You then add your information, upload evidence, include any family members and submit before your current permit expires.

By the employment start, the employer must arrange health insurance, life insurance, industrial-injury insurance and occupational-pension insurance. Salary and all other terms must equal the relevant Swedish collective agreement or what is normal in the occupation or industry. If you aren’t population registered and the job or Swedish stay is at most one year, comprehensive health insurance can also be required.

A post-study permit holder who submits the work application on time has a published exemption that allows work for the employer and occupation named in that application while waiting. The rule for a direct switch from a study permit is less clear in the public guidance. Unrestricted full-time work before approval cannot be assumed. The Migration Agency’s case-specific answer determines whether work is permitted while that application is pending.

What salary must the first job pay?

For former-student applications submitted from 16 June 2026, the statutory floor is 75 percent of the Swedish median salary, currently SEK 28,725 a month, about INR 2.87 lakh. This replaces the ordinary 90 percent threshold of SEK 34,470 for this category. It does not remove the salary test. The consolidated Swedish Aliens Ordinance supplies the legal rule, the Migration Agency salary table supplies the current amounts, and Statistics Sweden salary data helps you examine occupational pay.

Minimum salary to test = the higher of the statutory former-student floor and the collective-agreement or normal salary for the occupation and industry

Suppose a graduate receives a signed offer for SEK 30,000 a month, about INR 3 lakh. The offer clears the statutory salary floor. If the collective agreement or normal rate for that occupation and experience is SEK 32,000, however, the offer still fails. The salary must rise to at least SEK 32,000 before it clears both tests.

The lower threshold normally applies for two years from the first work-permit grant, or through a longer initial permit validity where the law allows it. A later extension can face the ordinary salary threshold, so build salary progression into the employment conversation.

Is your job offer ready for a work permit?

The offer must satisfy all the required conditions below. If even one condition is missing, the lower result and the action in the final column apply. A strong job title or famous employer cannot replace a signed contract, enough contracted hours or an on-time application.

Can this offer support the switch?Check the contract, employer duties, salary and filing date together.
Result What is true Next action
Ready to submit One signed contract clears both salary tests, terms are normal, four employer insurances are arranged and you can file before expiry Employer starts the case and you submit your part promptly
Needs confirmation The offer meets the salary minimum, but the union rate, insurance start or right to work while waiting is unclear Get the employer, union or Migration Agency answer in writing
Not eligible yet No single signed contract clears the higher salary test, normal conditions or the permit deadline Renegotiate or find a different qualifying offer before relying on it

The employee application fee is SEK 2,200, about INR 22,000.

If your offer isn’t ready, keep the search active while the current permit remains valid. Track which condition is missing and set a date for resolving it. Salary may be negotiable, an insurance package may be fixable and a contract may be signed. An expired permit deadline is much harder to repair.

Key takeaways

  • Put the study-permit expiry date at the top of your graduation calendar.
  • Choose the requested search period only after checking passport validity and funds.
  • Review job-search results after 90 days and widen role, language or location choices when needed.
  • Ask the employer to confirm your contracted percentage of full-time hours and the insurance package before agreeing a start date.
  • Keep salary and employment evidence because a later extension may face the ordinary threshold.

Frequently asked questions

What if my study-permit extension is pending when I graduate?

Contact the Migration Agency and ask to change the pending extension application to the post-study basis. Its current guidance says you should not file a second application. Do this promptly after completion and keep the contact record, rather than assuming the pending study request automatically becomes a graduate permit.

What if my passport expires six months after graduation?

An eligible graduate of a qualifying Swedish university programme can receive the post-study permit only up to passport expiry, even though the route’s maximum is one year. Renew the passport before applying where possible. Showing twelve months of funds cannot make a permit run beyond a short passport.

What if my final completion evidence is delayed?

Apply inside Sweden before the current study permit expires, then supplement the case when the completion evidence arrives. You must still finish the original programme and pass every course. Submitting on time keeps the application within the filing period, but it does not turn incomplete study or failed courses into qualifying completion.

Can current job income count toward post-study maintenance?

Yes, when the income is current and properly documented. The Migration Agency asks for your employment contract and payslips when ongoing work income supports maintenance. Match the evidenced income to every month requested and use other accepted funds for any shortfall. A future job offer alone is not current income.

What if my employer started the application but I have not submitted?

Your work-permit case is not registered when the employer starts its part or sends the link. It is registered only after you complete and submit your section. If your current permit is near expiry, finish your part before that date. An unfinished employee link does not protect the filing deadline.

Can I combine two part-time offers for the work permit?

No. The former-student work application must rely on one signed employment contract that individually meets the salary and employment conditions. Two part-time jobs cannot be added together to clear the requirement. Ask whether either employer can offer one qualifying contract before treating the combined income as a permit plan.

What family evidence changes when I switch to a work permit?

Add family members under the worker-family rules, not the post-study under-18 rules. Prepare passports, marriage or cohabitation evidence, and birth or custody documents as applicable. An older dependent child may need dependency evidence. Each included family member also needs the current application evidence and fee for that work-stage route.
