A PhD in France for Indian students commonly uses a 3-year full-time structure, but admission starts with a named project, eligible supervisor, host unit, programme authority and accepted funding, as Université Paris-Saclay‘s application record shows.

The 3-year structure is one official model, not a France-wide promise of duration or funding. A national public research-employment agreement is one funded example, and the French Higher Education Ministry sets its research-only minimum at EUR 2,300 gross a month from 1 January 2026, about INR 2.53 lakh at the European Central Bank’s 5 August 2026 rate. Other French scholarships, project funding and self-funded arrangements remain subject to local programme conditions.

How does a PhD application in France actually work?

A supported research project comes before a generic university application. Paris-Saclay describes one application as a package containing the applicant, thesis subject, supervisor, research team and contemplated funding. It then requires favourable recommendations from the supervisor and host research-unit director before the doctoral school examines the file.

an applicant; A thesis subject; A thesis supervisor; A research team; The type of funding consideredUniversité Paris-Saclay

Those components are connected, but they are not interchangeable. A researcher can like your idea without being authorised to direct the thesis. A doctoral school can approve your academic file without employing you. The table shows what each decision establishes and what evidence you should retain.

Component What you must establish Who confirms it Evidence to save What can stop the route
Research subject The question is specific, feasible and suited to the field and facilities Supervisor and research unit, then doctoral school Advertised subject sheet or research proposal A broad interest statement with no workable project
Thesis supervisor A person eligible under local rules agrees to direct the thesis Prospective supervisor and doctoral school Written agreement or favourable recommendation Interest from a researcher who cannot formally supervise
Host research unit The laboratory or unit accepts the project and can support the work Research-unit director or equivalent Unit approval, training agreement or recommendation No unit accepts the project or facilities are unsuitable
Doctoral school Your academic record, research aptitude, project and local conditions meet its rules Doctoral school or admission commission Academic admission and stated conditions Supervisor support is mistaken for final admission
Funding The amount, form and period meet that school’s requirement Employer, scholarship body, funder and doctoral school Contract, award letter, dates and funding declaration Funding is too short, too low or unacceptable locally
Registration You complete the institution’s academic and administrative enrolment Doctoral college and awarding institution Registration, fee and student-life contribution (CVEC) attestations where applicable Academic admission is treated as completed enrolment
Immigration status Your contract, scholarship, hosting agreement and stay fit the selected status Host office, France-Visas and French authority Personalised checklist and hosting agreement where applicable You assume every doctoral candidate uses student status

This separation matters when an early conversation sounds positive. Supervisor interest is evidence of academic fit, but admission, funding, registration and immigration remain independent decisions until the responsible body issues its document. A candidate who records each decision separately can see whether the file is progressing or merely waiting on an assumption. The same record also prevents one favourable email from being presented later as proof of a contract or completed enrolment.

The doctorate application itself is outside the taught-course Études en France (EEF) academic workflow. Campus France directs applicants to the doctoral school, supervisor, research unit and funding route. Your later India immigration process still depends on the documents and status that result.

Does an Indian master’s qualify for a French doctorate?

An Indian master’s can qualify when the doctoral school accepts it as master-equivalent and your file proves aptitude for research. There is no national promise covering every Indian MA, MSc, MTech, MBA or other postgraduate award. The field, level, dissertation and methods preparation all matter.

You don’t convert your Indian transcript into an official French ECTS total yourself. ECTS is the European credit system, while your host assesses whether the foreign qualification gives suitable access. Grenoble permits an equivalent foreign qualification through an exemption request in the application. Bordeaux asks foreign-degree holders for translated diploma and transcript evidence plus a research paper or internship report.

Build one evidence file that lets a school judge both level and research readiness.

  • Your master’s certificate, complete transcripts and official grading scale should identify the award, field, dates, marks and distinctions without forcing a homemade French conversion.
  • Your dissertation, research paper and project summary should show the question, method, evidence, your contribution and what you can investigate in the proposed setting.
  • Your CV and references should separate research, employment, teaching, publications, conferences and technical skills, with referees who can assess research aptitude.
  • Certified translations should follow the doctoral school’s stated language and document rules.
  • Any publication should be described honestly as published, accepted, under review or in preparation.

Local evidence can be stricter than the broad master’s-level rule. Bordeaux publishes different grade, dissertation and funding expectations across its doctoral schools. Every named cutoff is therefore a local condition, not a France-wide mark for Indian applicants.

How do advertised PhD subjects and proposed projects differ?

An advertised subject gives you a defined research problem and named host, while a proposed project begins with your idea and a supervisor whose work fits it. Science and engineering candidates often meet advertised subjects. Arts, languages, humanities and social-science candidates more often develop proposals, but this is a field pattern rather than a fixed national rule.

be pre-selected by a thesis director and a host laboratory to carry out the research work.Université Grenoble Alpes

The comparison identifies the appropriate first action. The subject and its funding terms belong in the same assessment, because an attractive topic without accepted full-duration funding may still be unusable.

Which PhD starting route fits your current evidence?Green means the starting package is identifiable. Amber needs confirmation. Red means the route is not ready.
Your current evidence Route status What you do next
You found a named subject, eligible supervisor, host laboratory and funding details Advertised-subject route is identifiable Check the doctoral school’s selection file and exact 2027 call
You have a focused proposal and can identify supervisors whose current research and facilities match it Proposed-project route is identifiable Send a concise, individual approach with your question and preparation
The subject is live but funding says pending, external or to be secured Academic fit may exist, funding is unresolved Ask who funds the position, for how long and under which contract or award
You are contacting universities broadly without a subject, supervisor fit or research-unit match The application isn’t ready Narrow the research question and identify the correct doctoral school and unit first

The green rows do not mean that admission is assured. They mean that the candidate can identify the route, the decision-makers and the documents that the next stage requires. The amber row is materially different because the academic opportunity exists while its financial basis does not. The red row shows a search problem rather than a rejection: there is not yet a specific project that a supervisor, laboratory or doctoral school can evaluate.

A Paris-Saclay subject labelled non-competing can still receive several candidate applications. The label means the subject, laboratory, supervisor and funding are earmarked together. It does not mean that one applicant has no competition. Save the exact label and read the candidate-selection paragraph rather than guessing from the title.

The Campus France doctorate catalogue can help you filter offers by field, doctoral school, funding, duration and English-thesis possibility. A catalogue result starts your verification. It doesn’t replace the live host page or the doctoral school’s conditions.

How is a PhD in France funded?

A French PhD may be funded through employment, a scholarship, a project or another arrangement accepted by the doctoral school. Not every candidate is an employee, and not every school accepts self-funding. The amount, gross or net label, funding dates and full-duration rule must be explicit.

A funding document needs to be assessed across the four columns. Written school rules and the immigration effect are part of that assessment before acceptance.

Funding form What the arrangement is Current verified point What you still confirm
Public doctoral contract Employment with an eligible public employer Initial three-year contract with extension provisions and a national research-only pay floor Selection, duties, dates, employer and expected thesis duration
Private doctoral contract Employment with an eligible private employer Initial three-year framework with possible extensions Collaboration agreement, pay, project control and time split
Industrial research agreement, convention industrielle de formation par la recherche (CIFRE) Company employment joined to academic research The ministry overview states no nationality condition Current employment conditions and call from the scheme manager, the Association nationale de la recherche et de la technologie (ANRT), plus company and laboratory conditions
Project-funded subject Funding is attached or being attached to a named topic and host Candidate selection can remain competitive Whether funding is secured, the legal form and who selects
Scholarship or research stay Support may not be an employment salary Residence status and social protection depend on amount and host documents Coverage, duration, insurance, tax, social rights and extra costs
Eiffel doctorate award French institution nominates a candidate for government scholarship funding The 2027 call and official monthly amount were not settled in the checked material Current call, amount, nomination deadline and uncovered costs
Self-funded or salaried part-time plan Personal resources or outside employment support the research Some schools assess adequate conditions, while others require full-duration funding Written local acceptance and a complete multi-year budget

The legal form changes what the headline amount means. A salary normally sits within an employment relationship, while a scholarship can have different tax, insurance and social-protection consequences. Duration is equally important: a strong monthly figure does not remove a gap between the award end date and the expected thesis end date. These distinctions allow two offers with similar advertised values to produce very different usable income, rights and financial exposure.

There is no safe national formula for the minimum accepted funding. Bordeaux’s School of Mathematics and Computer Science says full-duration funding is required. Other Bordeaux school sections publish their own minimums, while Paris-Saclay permits school or commission assessment of adequate material and financial conditions in some cases.

Funding coverage ratio = confirmed funded months ÷ planned doctorate months

If your plan is 36 months but the award letter covers 24 months, the ratio is 24 divided by 36, or 0.67. The formula doesn’t decide admission. It exposes a 12-month gap that you must resolve with the doctoral school before accepting.

For an honest budget, include net living income, registration, CVEC where applicable, insurance, equipment not supplied by the unit, travel and any month outside the funding period. Broader France scholarship routes can expand the search, while Eiffel remains an institution-nominated application with its own annual rules.

What does a public doctoral contract pay and require?

A public doctoral contract is employment, not a scholarship. The French Higher Education Ministry states a research-only minimum of EUR 2,300 gross a month from 1 January 2026. At the page’s planning rate, that is about INR 2.53 lakh gross a month, before French deductions.

Le contrat doctoral est ouvert à tout doctorant inscrit en première année de thèse depuis moins de six mois, sans condition d’âge.French Higher Education Ministry

The public page’s detailed provisions include timing nuance beyond that introductory sentence, so don’t turn it into one universal application deadline. Local competitions and employers set their own calendars and candidate selection.

The initial contract period is three years. The framework permits two possible one-year extensions by amendment, but neither an extension nor its funding is automatic. Teaching, scientific-information, knowledge-transfer or expert duties follow the relevant additional-payment schedule, so ask the employer to state duties and pay separately.

Selection remains local. Academic admission doesn’t guarantee that a public contract will follow. A sound comparison between a contract and scholarship covers legal status, social protection, paid leave, duties, tax, residence route and funded months, not only the headline monthly amount.

Will an Indian PhD candidate use student or researcher status?

Your contract, scholarship amount, hosting agreement and stay length determine the likely direction. University registration alone doesn’t settle residence status. The applicable category is established through the host international office and the personalised France-Visas result.

A hosting agreement is an official document from an approved research or higher-education body that identifies the researcher, purpose and period. It is not proof of accommodation.

In addition to documents proving your personal situation, you must enclose the hosting agreement with your visa application.France-Visas

The relevant row connects a contract or award to the documents needed before the complete France visa process from India begins.

Doctoral arrangement Likely official direction Evidence that controls Important caution
French work contract with qualifying hosting agreement Researcher route under current carte talent wording Master-equivalent qualification, contract or mission and hosting agreement Do not choose student status only because you also register at a university
Qualifying scholarship-funded research stay Researcher route may apply when current funding and host conditions are met Research-stay agreement, monthly funding and hosting agreement The funding threshold changes with the current public doctoral minimum
No work contract or funding below the researcher condition Student status may apply to the enrolled doctorate Enrolment, resources and personalised visa checklist Student work and resource rules differ from researcher status
Researcher stay under 12 months Talent researcher long-stay visa that serves as a residence permit (VLS-TS) France-Visas result and hosting agreement A stay of at least one year normally follows the long-stay visa and online card route

The table describes direction, not a status that a candidate can select for convenience. Two doctoral candidates at the same university may follow different routes because one has an employment contract and qualifying hosting agreement while the other relies on student resources. That difference affects the supporting file and later residence formalities. It is therefore safer to organise immigration evidence around the actual funding and host documents than around the shared title of PhD candidate.

Current Service Public language uses carte talent for the researcher status, although older pages and searches still say talent passport.

How does a cotutelle PhD in France work?

A cotutelle is a formal doctoral agreement between a French institution and a foreign partner institution. It isn’t informal co-supervision, and a second adviser alone doesn’t create it. The agreement sets the scientific, registration, residence and award arrangements for one doctorate carried across both institutions.

To do so, a cotutelle agreement must be drawn up and signed between the two partner institutions.Université Grenoble Alpes

Every cotutelle term below forms part of one document and funding assessment. A complete row-by-row record is necessary before a supervisor’s verbal support or funding call can be treated as a workable arrangement.

Agreement term What must be written or confirmed Why it changes your plan
Partner institutions Both institutions and their authority to participate in the doctorate A personal supervisor arrangement isn’t enough
Thesis directors One eligible director in each country Scientific supervision must operate across both hosts
Residence periods Time to be spent in each institution Travel, housing and immigration must cover every move
Registration fees Where fees are paid and what exemption applies Registration at both places doesn’t mean paying both automatically
Social protection Insurance and social cover in every residence period Coverage can change with country and employment status
Language and defence Thesis language, summary, jury and defence arrangement You cannot assume every task can be completed in English
Award The diploma or diplomas issued under the agreement The Grenoble example uses two diplomas after one defence, but local agreements can differ
Mobility funding Salary or scholarship, travel, temporary housing and partner contribution The cotutelle label doesn’t fund alternating residence by itself

These terms interact. A residence schedule determines travel and housing costs, but it can also change insurance needs and the periods covered by each funding source. The fee clause matters only when it identifies where registration occurs and which exemption applies. Similarly, the promise of two supervisors has limited practical value unless the agreement also settles the defence, award and responsibilities of both institutions. An incomplete term can therefore disrupt several other parts of the arrangement.

Grenoble’s current example has registration at both institutions, fees at one, alternating research stays, one supervisor in each place and a single defence. That example explains the mechanism but is not universal wording for every cotutelle. The current agreement controls the awards and costs.

How much does a French doctorate cost and how long does it take?

The budget needs to cover the exact registered duration and every unfunded month rather than assume that all doctorates finish in three years. Paris-Saclay uses three years as the full-time reference and three to six years for part-time research. Campus France gives a broader three-to-six-year description because fields and projects differ.

The latest national public figures available on 6 August 2026 are shown below. The 2027/28 fee and CVEC were still pending, so these are planning references rather than a 2027 invoice.

Cost item Published 2026/27 annual amount (EUR) Approximate annual amount (INR) What you confirm for 2027/28
Annual public doctorate registration fee EUR 398 INR 43,740 New national schedule and any institution-specific charge
Annual CVEC where in scope EUR 105 INR 11,540 New annual amount and your paid or exempt status

Public doctorate registration costs using EUR 1 = INR 109.90 on 5 August 2026

Annual charges create a different calculation from one-time arrival costs. An extra year can repeat registration and applicable CVEC obligations while also adding rent, insurance and living expenses. The published figures therefore cannot be multiplied by three automatically unless the candidate’s expected registration period is exactly three years. The useful budget separates annual, monthly and one-time items, then applies each amount to the period in which it actually arises.

The registration fee applies to each enrolled year, not the whole doctorate. CVEC is completed before administrative registration, and an exempt candidate still needs the attestation.

Living and arrival costs have no single France-wide amount suitable for this page. Build them from the city, housing route, rent deposit, insurance, travel and every unfunded month. A cotutelle also needs a signed budget for each move and temporary stay, with the responsible institution or funder named.

An English thesis can be possible where the doctoral school and host allow it. The catalogue label doesn’t settle laboratory language, mandatory training, defence rules or French needed for daily administration. If the host asks for French evidence, compare its accepted French-language certificate and placement tests rather than assuming one national doctorate rule.

How should you plan a 2027 PhD application?

Planning works backwards from the exact subject, host and funding call, because France has no single 2027 PhD deadline. Older national guidance and 2026 school competitions can show the order of work, but they cannot supply a live 2027 closing date.

These steps keep research, selection, funding, registration and immigration on separate clocks. Save a dated official page at every step.

Step Planning period What you do Evidence status
1 12 to 18 months before the intended start Choose the advertised-subject or proposed-project route and identify doctoral schools, research units and supervisors Planning advice, not a national deadline
2 Before contacting or applying Check master’s-level research evidence, supervisor eligibility, host-unit process and the school’s funding rule Current school-specific evidence
3 When the named 2027 call opens Apply through the stated doctoral school, the ADUM online doctoral-candidate platform where required, a named project or the employer route 2027 date must come from the named live call
4 During selection Track separate supervisor, unit, school, employer and funder decisions Decision-maker specific
5 Before accepting Compare funding form, gross or net amount, funded months, duties, cotutelle mobility and likely residence status Offer-specific
6 After academic admission Complete doctoral registration and the India visa or residence route instructed for your documents Institution and France-Visas specific

The sequence reduces a common timing error: treating academic admission as the moment when every other process begins. Funding competitions may close before a doctoral school decision, while registration and immigration generally depend on documents produced later. Separate clocks make those dependencies visible. They also show why a date copied from a central master’s calendar cannot substitute for the deadline on a named doctoral subject, employer vacancy or doctoral-school competition.

Central taught-programme dates and doctoral-school calls follow different calendars, so keep the latter tied to the named school or project in your France application timeline.

If a required decision or term remains verbal, ask for written confirmation before you submit.

If you intend to work in France after the defence, test the diploma, job and current residence document against the France post-study work and status-change routes. Your doctoral residence status doesn’t continue automatically after the research contract or enrolment ends.

Is a DBA the same as a PhD in France?

No. A Doctor of Business Administration offered by a school isn’t automatically the French national doctorate. Campus France’s doctorate FAQ separates a DBA from the academic doctor degree, so the programme name and the school’s reputation cannot settle the award.

The awarding institution, its authority to award the national doctorate and the exact diploma wording establish the nature of the qualification. A private award may still suit a professional purpose, but that is a different decision from choosing a national doctorate for an academic or research career. The French degree-recognition hierarchy distinguishes these cases without treating a professional-certification level or school marketing as proof of national-doctorate status.

Key takeaways

  • A French doctorate begins with a viable subject plus an eligible supervisor and host research unit that support the exact project.
  • The doctoral school, laboratory, university and employer can be different organisations with separate decisions and documents.
  • An Indian master’s can qualify, but the host assesses level and research aptitude rather than accepting every postgraduate award automatically.
  • Funding conditions vary by doctoral school, and a 36-month project needs an accepted plan for all 36 months.
  • The public doctoral contract minimum is EUR 2,300 gross per month from 1 January 2026 for research-only work.
  • Student or researcher status depends on the contract, funding, hosting agreement and stay, not university registration alone.
  • A cotutelle requires a signed institutional agreement that settles residence, fees, supervision, defence, award and mobility funding.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do a PhD in France after a master’s from India?

Yes, if the doctoral school accepts your qualification as master-equivalent and your file demonstrates research aptitude. Submit the exact degree, transcripts, grading scale, dissertation or research paper and any requested translations. The school assesses equivalence, so don’t rely on a self-converted ECTS total or a universal Indian-degree rule.

Do I need a supervisor before applying for a PhD in France?

Usually, you need support from an eligible thesis supervisor and host research unit before the doctoral school completes academic selection. The order can differ for advertised subjects and school competitions. Check whether the live call asks you to contact the supervisor first or submit through its platform.

Are all PhDs in France funded?

No. Funding rules vary by doctoral school and project. Some require accepted funding for the full thesis, while others may assess scholarship, personal or part-time salaried arrangements. Record the amount, gross or net label, funded months, legal form and who pays before treating an academic acceptance as workable.

How much is a French public doctoral contract in 2026?

The national research-only minimum is EUR 2,300 gross per month from 1 January 2026. That was about INR 2.53 lakh gross at EUR 1 = INR 109.90. Gross isn’t take-home pay, and teaching or other complementary duties follow separate payment rules. Recheck the current offer and national minimum.

Do Indian PhD applicants use Études en France?

Not for the academic doctorate application itself. You apply through the doctoral-school, subject, supervisor, research-unit and funding route. After admission, follow the current India instructions for any accepted-student, pre-consular or immigration stage. Don’t assume the ordinary taught-programme Études en France (EEF) workflow selects doctoral candidates.

Will I need student or talent researcher status for a French PhD?

Your contract, scholarship amount, hosting agreement and stay length decide the likely direction. A French work contract and qualifying hosting agreement commonly support the researcher route, while other enrolled candidates may use student status. Confirm the category with the host office and your personalised France-Visas result.

Can I complete a PhD in France in English?

It may be possible when the doctoral school, supervisor and research unit allow it. An English-thesis listing doesn’t automatically settle laboratory communication, mandatory training, administrative work or defence rules. Obtain written confirmation of the thesis, summary, training and defence languages, then plan enough French for daily work and life.

What is a cotutelle PhD in France?

A cotutelle is one doctorate governed by a signed agreement between a French institution and a foreign partner. It sets supervisors, alternating residence, registration fees, social protection, defence and award arrangements. It doesn’t automatically fund travel or duplicate housing, so the mobility budget must be written separately.
