For 2027 entry, the name grande ecole does not prove that every programme awards the same kind of French qualification. It describes a selective institution category. The exact award can be a national diploma, a school diploma carrying France’s academic grade de master, a visa-authorised management diploma, a level 7 professional certification in France’s RNCP register or a programme quality label from the Conference des grandes ecoles (CGE). These statuses can overlap, but none can be borrowed from another course at the same school.

An Indian student therefore needs the programme’s legal award title, awarding body, campus, validity dates and the future receiving organisation’s written rule. French academic status answers one question, professional level another, and later Indian equivalence a third. Any authorisation ending before the expected award date needs a new official decision, not a sales assurance. Admission, employment, doctoral entry and professional practice remain separate decisions.

Who decides whether a French qualification is recognised?

The answer depends on what the student will do with the qualification. A French Ministry record can establish the award’s status in France, but it can’t compel an Indian university, employer or statutory council to accept it for a different purpose. The receiving organisation owns the final use decision.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) runs India’s current general equivalence route for foreign higher-education qualifications. ENIC-NARIC France provides a non-binding comparison of a foreign qualification for use in France. It doesn’t decide admission, employment or later acceptance in India.

Recognition starts with the future useGreen routes use programme records first. Amber routes add a receiving authority. Red routes require a professional regulator.
Goal First decision-maker Evidence to check Limit of that evidence
Compare a French programme Student, then school Ministry, France Competences and CGE records as relevant Doesn’t promise admission or overseas acceptance
Enter a French course with an Indian degree French host institution Admission rules and ENIC-NARIC statement if requested Doesn’t bind every French institution
Use a French degree for further study in India Indian receiving institution, with UGC route where required UGC regulations, portal and written admission rule French status alone doesn’t promise equivalence
Apply for an Indian post requiring a recognised qualification Recruiting body Vacancy wording and the certificate route it names No universal rule covers every employer
Practise a regulated profession in India Relevant Indian statutory council Profession-specific recognition and registration procedure General UGC equivalence doesn’t grant practice rights
Enter a French doctorate French doctoral school Award status, transcript and research preparation Level 7 or grade de master doesn’t guarantee admission

Start with the row that matches the next use, not the row that sounds most prestigious. Someone comparing a French programme should first establish what the course awards. Someone planning further study in India should also obtain the Indian institution’s written equivalence requirement before enrolling. A student entering a French doctorate needs the doctoral school’s academic and research criteria, while a regulated professional must follow the named statutory authority. These routes can ask for different evidence from the same graduate.

For example, an Indian student choosing a business diploma for a later university application in India should not stop at the school’s Ministry entry. The useful file combines that French entry with the transcript structure, credit load, delivery campus and the Indian university’s current instruction. This prevents a genuine French professional qualification from being mistaken for an automatically equivalent Indian academic degree.

This route logic also separates recognition from the France student visa decision. A programme can be accepted for admission without every future Indian use being settled, while a visa approval doesn’t certify the award’s academic status. The wider study in France decision needs both checks in the right order.

Useful recognition evidence = exact award + legal awarder + campus + valid period + receiver’s written requirement

This is an Nbyula verification formula, not a French or Indian legal test. If one term is missing, a school-level claim such as “recognised grande ecole” can’t close the decision. The student’s purpose decides which official record must fill the gap.

What do DNM, grade de master, CEFDG, RNCP and CGE mean?

France uses several records because academic degrees, state-authorised management diplomas, professional certifications and programme-quality labels perform different jobs. DNM means diplome national de master, the national Master’s degree. It normally covers Master 1 and Master 2, awards 120 European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System credits after a 180-credit licence and brings the total to 300 credits. The French higher education ministry’s DNM guidance also places it within the licence, Master and doctorate structure.

Grade de master is the academic grade attached to a DNM and certain other expressly authorised awards. It is broader than the DNM. A school diploma can carry grade de master without becoming a DNM, while a title that merely contains MSc or Master in its marketing name doesn’t establish either status. The Education Code provisions on grade de master identify the authorised award categories.

Status What it establishes What it doesn’t establish Official check
DNM National second-cycle Master’s degree and grade de master Admission to a specific doctorate or Indian equivalence Ministry guidance and accredited programme record
Grade de master Academic Master grade for an authorised exact award That the award is necessarily a DNM Education Code and applicable Ministry list
CEFDG visa Time-limited state authorisation for an exact management diploma Grade de master unless the grade field also grants it Ministry authorisation list
RNCP level 7 Professional certification at French qualification level 7 DNM, grade de master, ECTS or overseas equivalence by itself France Competences record
CGE MSc or MS Programme-specific collective quality label State visa or academic grade unless separately recorded CGE labelled-programme directory
ENIC-NARIC France statement Non-binding comparison of a foreign qualification for use in France Admission, hiring, practice rights or French-to-India assessment Service Public and ENIC-NARIC service

CEFDG is the Commission for the Evaluation of Management Training and Qualifications. It evaluates management-school awards and advises the Ministry. A favourable CEFDG opinion isn’t yet the final authorisation. The Ministry’s published line for the exact diploma, campus, visa period and grade period is the decision record. The January to May 2026 CEFDG report includes both visa-plus-grade opinions and visa-only opinions, demonstrating why the fields must remain separate.

RNCP means Repertoire national des certifications professionnelles, France’s national register of professional certifications. Level 7 describes knowledge, skills, responsibility and autonomy at that qualification level. France Competences distinguishes this professional level from an academic grade.

Sur ces critères, les Master, certifications professionnelles portées par le Ministère de l’enseignement supérieur, sont également enregistrés au niveau 7.France Competences, certification FAQ

The positive example runs one way. RNCP39004 is an active national Master’s record at level 7 from 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2029. It shows that a DNM can also be level 7. It doesn’t prove that every level 7 certification is a DNM or carries grade de master.

CGE means Conference des grandes ecoles. Its MSc and Mastere Specialise, or MS, are collective labels for exact programmes at member schools. The MSc label applies to a programme delivering an institution diploma at Bac+5, while MS is a separate specialist label. Neither phrase alone proves a national Master’s degree.

Les labels sont uniquement octroyés aux formations des écoles membres ayant reçu l’accréditation de la CGE.Conference des grandes ecoles, labels and accreditations

Can one grande ecole award two qualifications with different status?

Yes. The Ministry’s 12 February 2026 authorised-diploma list provides a same-school comparison at IPAG Business School. Both entries cover Paris and Nice from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2029. The school name, campus period and Bac+5 level are similar, but the grade field differs.

Exact award Visa Grade de master Level Safe conclusion
IPAG Programme grande ecole 1 Sep 2026 to 31 Aug 2029 Granted for the same period Bac+5, level 7 The listed award has visa and academic grade
Diplome d’etudes superieures en management international 1 Sep 2026 to 31 Aug 2029 No grade shown Bac+5, level 7 The listed award has visa and level 7, but the line doesn’t grant grade de master

This contrast holds school reputation constant. It proves why a student comparing a France MiM or Programme grande ecole with another management diploma must copy the legal award name. The word MSc, a Bac+5 description or RNCP level 7 can’t transfer the PGE’s grade to another course.

The dates matter too. A 2027 entrant should compare the expected award date with the published visa and grade end dates. If the course extends beyond the listed period, the school should identify the later Ministry authorisation in writing before a non-refundable payment. A favourable CEFDG opinion or expected renewal isn’t the same as a published authorisation.

How should an Indian student verify a programme before paying?

The offer letter and marketing page are starting points, not final recognition records. The check must connect the course being sold to the qualification actually awarded. A teaching school can prepare students for another organisation’s RNCP certification, and a group can market several campuses under one brand.

Field to copy Evidence to save Question it closes
School’s legal name Offer, contract and official register Who is providing the course?
Exact programme name Offer and official programme record Which course carries the claim?
Legal award title Diploma specimen, regulations or written reply What qualification appears at graduation?
Awarder or certifier Ministry or RNCP record Is the teaching school legally awarding it?
Campus and delivery partner Contract, timetable and authorisation Does the record cover this site and arrangement?
Expected award date Academic calendar and course length Will the authorisation still cover the award?
Visa and grade fields Ministry list Does the exact management diploma have one or both?
RNCP code and expiry France Competences record Which professional certification is active?
CGE label Exact entry in the CGE programme directory Is this programme, not only the school, labelled?
Future use Receiving organisation’s written requirement Which recognition route will actually be accepted?

An RNCP record needs its full certification title, code, level, legal certifier, registration dates and delivery relationship. A school displaying another certifier’s number doesn’t by itself prove that every campus, intake or course variant leads to that certification. The student’s contract, the official record and the written award title should agree.

A broad institutional accolade can’t repair a missing programme record. The France institution comparison helps separate universities, grandes ecoles and specialist schools, while the recognition worksheet tests the exact award. Tuition and recognition evidence should be settled before the deposit enters the France study budget.

When is ENIC-NARIC France useful for an Indian degree?

ENIC-NARIC France can compare a foreign qualification with French and European framework levels for use in France. An Indian bachelor’s applicant may need its comparability statement if a French institution asks for one. A non-regulated employer can also request it. The French host institution or employer still makes the final decision.

L’attestation de comparabilité n’a pas de valeur juridique et n’est pas obligatoire. La décision finale revient à l’établissement de formation.Service Public, foreign diploma recognition in France

Qualification and purpose Role of the statement Final decision
Indian bachelor’s for French admission May compare the award if the host requests it French institution
Indian degree for a non-regulated French job May help an employer understand the level Employer
Indian professional qualification for regulated work General comparability isn’t practice authorisation Competent French professional authority
French degree for study or work in India Outside the foreign-to-France comparison role Indian receiving organisation and applicable authority

The French Master’s admission route still follows the programme’s entry rules. An ENIC-NARIC statement isn’t a universal conversion certificate and doesn’t award missing credits, guarantee admission or replace a profession-specific authorisation.

Will a French qualification be recognised in India?

Not automatically from the French label alone. For a new general higher-education equivalence case, the UGC regulations list still identifies the 2025 foreign-qualification regulations, and the UGC equivalence portal was live on 10 August 2026. The Indian university, employer, examination or public body must still state what evidence it requires.

UGC’s test examines more than a French level. Under the 2025 equivalence regulations, the foreign institution must be recognised under its home-country law and the programme must follow that institution’s norms. The assessment can consider entry requirements, duration or normalised credits, curriculum, evaluation, laboratory work, thesis, project, internship and curricular outcomes.

Issue UGC or receiving-body question Evidence to prepare
Institution status Is the awarder recognised in its home country? French legal and authorisation record
Entry level Does entry correspond to the Indian comparison route? Admission criteria and prior qualifications
Duration and credits Does the academic volume meet the comparison? Transcript, ECTS and programme regulations
Curriculum and assessment Are learning, evaluation and practical components comparable? Module handbook, thesis, project and internship evidence
Offshore campus Was the site approved in the host and home countries? Both official approvals
Franchise delivery Does the exclusion for a franchising arrangement apply? Contract, awarder and delivery agreement
Regulated profession Is the field outside the UGC general route? Relevant statutory council procedure

Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Law, Architecture and other qualifications regulated by Indian statutory councils fall outside this general UGC route. The applicable council controls professional recognition and registration. A French DNM or grade de master can’t substitute for that professional decision.

The Association of Indian Universities evaluation portal also remains online and describes its foreign-degree equivalence service. Its public wording overlaps with the newer UGC route. A student should start with the current UGC regulation and portal, then follow any exact AIU certificate wording in the receiving organisation’s rule or obtain written clarification. It isn’t safe to claim that either public service has disappeared.

Does grade de master or RNCP level 7 guarantee a PhD or job?

No. The DNM is designed to support an application to doctoral study, but the doctoral school still evaluates the award, transcript, research preparation, proposed project and supervisor fit. A level 7 professional certification doesn’t automatically establish the academic grade, ECTS or research preparation a doctoral school expects. The France PhD route separates degree eligibility from supervisor and doctoral-school acceptance.

Employment also depends on the role. A French employer can evaluate a foreign qualification for a non-regulated job, while a regulated profession uses its competent authority. In India, a private employer may accept its own evidence unless a law, tender or role specifies a recognised qualification. A public recruitment notice can require a particular equivalence certificate. The written vacancy wording controls.

Immigration outcomes use another test. A qualifying French award can matter to a France post-study work route, but immigration eligibility doesn’t convert an RNCP title into a DNM or guarantee Indian equivalence. Academic, professional, recruitment and immigration decisions should remain separate in the evidence file.

What should a 2027 applicant save before enrolment?

There is no single 2027 recognition list that covers every future award. The Ministry’s programme authorisations, RNCP registrations and CGE labels each have their own validity periods. A student should check the proposed intake, the expected award date and any partner campus against the record that owns the claim.

Stage Action Evidence to retain
Before application Copy the legal programme and award names Programme rules and current official record
Before accepting Match awarder, campus, mode and partner Offer, contract and written school reply
Before deposit Check visa, grade, RNCP and CGE dates as relevant Dated PDF or screenshot of each record
Before enrolment Resolve any authorisation ending before graduation New Ministry or registry decision
During study Keep curriculum, credits and assessment evidence Transcript, module handbook, thesis and internship records
Before later use Ask the receiving organisation for its exact route Written UGC, AIU, council or internal requirement

The Campus France India process can organise an admission file, but it doesn’t settle every later recognition purpose. The programme’s French record and the future receiver’s written requirement belong in the same saved evidence pack. That pack is more useful than a general promise that the school is internationally recognised.

Key takeaways

  • Grande ecole describes an institution category, not one uniform degree status.
  • A DNM carries grade de master, but not every grade de master award is a DNM.
  • A CEFDG visa can exist without grade de master, and RNCP level 7 doesn’t create either status.
  • CGE MSc and Mastere Specialise labels belong to exact programmes and don’t replace state records.
  • ENIC-NARIC France compares foreign qualifications for France, not French qualifications for India.
  • Indian equivalence depends on the UGC or professional route and the receiving organisation’s written requirement.

Frequently asked questions about French degree recognition

What is a grande ecole in France?

A grande ecole is a selective public or private higher education institution category in France. It doesn’t give every course one legal degree status. Some exact awards carry a national diploma, grade de master, CEFDG visa, RNCP registration or CGE label. Check the programme, campus and dates separately.

Is a grande ecole diploma the same as a Master’s degree?

Not necessarily. A grande ecole diploma can carry grade de master when the exact award and period are authorised, but another diploma at the same school may not. The Ministry list must show the legal award and grade. The school category, Bac+5 wording or programme title isn’t enough.

What is the difference between a DNM and grade de master?

A DNM is France’s national Master’s degree and carries grade de master. Grade de master is broader because it can attach to certain other authorised qualifications, including specified school and engineering awards. Therefore every DNM has the grade, but an award with the grade isn’t necessarily a DNM.

Does RNCP level 7 mean a qualification is a French Master’s degree?

No. RNCP level 7 is a professional qualification level. France Competences distinguishes it from the academic grade de master. A DNM can also appear at level 7, but the reverse doesn’t follow. Check the exact RNCP title, certifier, validity and a separate Ministry record for academic status.

Is a CEFDG visa the same as grade de master?

No. A CEFDG visa is state authorisation for an exact management diploma and limited period. Grade de master is a separate academic field. The Ministry can grant both or only the visa. Check the exact programme, campus, visa dates and grade dates in the published authorisation.

Is a CGE MSc or Mastere Specialise recognised by the French state?

A CGE MSc or Mastere Specialise is a collective quality label for an exact programme at an accredited member school. The label doesn’t by itself prove a DNM, CEFDG visa or grade de master. Verify the CGE directory, then check the applicable Ministry and RNCP records separately.

When does an Indian student need ENIC-NARIC France?

An Indian student may need an ENIC-NARIC comparability statement when a French institution or non-regulated employer requests help understanding an Indian qualification. The statement is optional and non-binding. It doesn’t guarantee admission, hiring or professional practice, and it doesn’t assess a French degree for use in India.

Will a French Master’s degree be recognised in India?

Not automatically. The current UGC route can assess a foreign qualification using institution status, entry level, duration or credits, curriculum and evaluation. Regulated professions use their Indian statutory councils. The receiving university or employer must state whether it needs UGC, AIU, council or its own assessment evidence.
