France has more than 3,500 public and private higher-education institutions, including 78 universities and communities, and the best fit for an Indian student is determined by the named programme’s subject, qualification, language, route and total cost, not its overall rank.

Two published 2026/27 tuition examples show the spread: EUR 178, about INR 19,600, for a public-university licence, and EUR 20,640, about INR 22.7 lakh, for new non-EEA graduate enrolment on another official fee page. In France, institution type and rank do not settle the exact award, teaching language, fee or application route.

How do France’s institution types differ?

Campus France describes more than 3,500 public and private higher-education institutions. Its overview includes 78 universities and communities of institutions, 267 doctoral schools, 227 engineering schools authorised to award the engineer title and 220 business and management schools. Public universities enrol most international students and cover subjects from science and law to languages, health and sport. Grandes écoles are selective institutions, often focused on engineering, management, public affairs or another specialist field. Some are public and some are private. The word grande école doesn’t by itself identify the award, recognition period or fee.

These aren’t mutually exclusive categories. Many engineering schools and business schools are also grandes écoles, so the school label never completes the comparison. The named qualification, teaching language, full fee schedule and first application route must agree at programme level.

At a public university, look for a named national diploma or other current programme accreditation. French is common at licence level and English choice is wider at master’s level. The budget needs the current national or differentiated rate and any written exemption decision. A Class XII applicant may use a prior-admission route, while another student may begin with Campus France India, an institution portal or a stated combination.

At an engineering school, check the authorisation for the engineer title or the status of the named master’s award. Teaching may be in French, English or both. The programme fee, compulsory charges, deposit and scholarship terms belong in the cost record, while the course page names the school portal, common application or other route.

At a grande école, identify whether the programme awards a school diploma, a Ministry-approved qualification, the academic master’s grade or another listed credential. Teaching language is set by the exact course. The full tuition schedule includes any internship or professional-immersion year outside the main classroom sequence, and the school names the applicable direct or common route.

At a business school, establish whether the programme has a named academic status, professional registry entry, specialist-school label or institutional award. Many graduate programmes teach in English, but the course page remains the evidence. The relevant budget covers total tuition, service charges, deposit and refund terms before the direct application or common route is used.

At another specialist institution, check whether the named course awards a national, school or institutional qualification. The teaching language, invoice and application route are institution-specific, so evidence from a neighbouring course cannot settle any of those points.

French records use several abbreviations. RNCP means Répertoire national des certifications professionnelles, CEFDG means Commission d’évaluation des formations et diplômes de gestion, and CGE means Conférence des grandes écoles. Download or capture the official result that names your programme and campus, including the beginning and end of its authorisation. The result belongs with the offer. Recognition can be time-limited, so a record for one graduating class may not settle another.

One school may offer a national degree, its own diploma and an executive certificate. Recognition attached to one doesn’t automatically transfer to the other two.

For doctoral study, ask the intended doctoral school whether the exact award gives the academic preparation and access it requires.
For a regulated profession, ask the profession’s competent authority. A school label alone doesn’t grant permission to practise.
For later use in India, ask the receiving Indian university, employer or regulator whether it needs a particular recognition or equivalence document. Do not assume that a French level label settles the Indian decision.

Which universities in France fit your subject?

The first candidates are universities that teach the intended subject in the required language. The examples aren’t ordered by quality. Each university’s 2027 programme page provides the application evidence.

Discovery evidence checked on 6 August 2026. Fee cells name a published cycle, describe the latest programme-specific evidence, or say that the current notice was pending.

Sorbonne’s registration page publishes a 2026/27 national-fee schedule by degree level. It is evidence for that institution and cycle, not a France-wide invoice. Sorbonne’s fully English offer is at master’s level.

École Polytechnique’s Bachelor of Science shows why a public institution doesn’t always charge the national licence fee. Its named non-EU bachelor price is much higher than the national registration rate and doesn’t transfer to another Polytechnique award. The school also tells applicants to fund the programme without relying on work.

One institution name can cover programmes with different qualifications, portals, languages and prices. PSL’s member schools are a clear example. Outside Paris, Bordeaux, Lyon and Grenoble add broad public-university options. If you plan to start in 2027, check Grenoble’s 2027/28 fee policy before budgeting.

Where can you study in English in France?

English-taught study is easiest to find at master’s level, though selected bachelor’s, engineering, business and specialist programmes are also available. The bachelor’s choice is smaller, so search earlier and check whether French is still required. Campus France records the teaching percentage, location, cost and accreditation. The institution page is the final evidence for the result.

The language description needs a literal reading. “Taught in English” can describe a full degree, one track, one year or only part of the timetable. PSL publishes fully English and partly English groups separately. Sorbonne says it offers no undergraduate degree entirely in English. The percentage taught in English is more precise than a university-wide label.

A fully English programme may not require French for academic admission, but it doesn’t remove French from housing, internships, daily administration or many graduate jobs. The programme’s own language rule determines whether the relevant DELF, DALF or TCF option applies.

For medicine, teaching, architecture and other regulated professions, confirm both professional recognition and teaching language. A related academic master’s may not qualify you to practise.

How should you use university rankings in France?

A ranking can reveal institutions with visible research in a subject, but an overall position is not a sound application order. A global table can’t tell you whether the 2027 programme exists, whether you meet its subject prerequisites, whether the qualification has the status you need or whether you can afford the full cost.

A strong subject position can help you discover relevant departments, but it does not establish course fit. The curriculum, faculty and laboratory pages show whether the prerequisites and named award align with an applicant’s academic record.

A high overall university rank indicates broad research visibility. It does not answer whether the specific programme suits your goals or publishes outcomes that matter to you.

A high business-school position can lead you to MiM, MSc or MBA candidates. Before shortlisting one, compare the required experience profile, programme recognition and total cost. These programmes serve different career stages even when the same school offers all three.

A consultant’s claim that one option is best is unusable until the criteria are disclosed. Put every candidate on the same worksheet and compare subject fit, eligibility, qualification, language, route, cost and outcomes before ordering the list.

A smaller specialist school may offer the more suitable curriculum even when a broad university ranks higher overall. Modules, thesis or internship structure, research groups and recent programme outcomes reveal the difference.

How much can tuition vary?

The 2026/27 public system separates national registration rates from higher differentiated fees that can apply to a new non-EU student. A regulatory or institutional exemption may change the result. Private and selective programmes sit outside this simple comparison and can cost much more.

For example, EUR 3,950 × 109.90 is about INR 434,105, or INR 4.34 lakh.

The exemption rule changed in May 2026. It limits the share of the relevant student population that an institution may cover through its own discretionary exemption decision. It is not a 30% or 25% tuition discount. The institutional ceiling is 30% for 2026/27 and 25% for 2027/28. Lyon 1 says new non-European students are generally subject to differentiated fees unless they meet a stated exemption or receive an institutional one. Université Grenoble Alpes says 2026/27 is a transition year and that its approach changes from 2027/28.

The differentiated amount is the prudent budget until the university confirms a national-fee exemption in writing. The university applies its criteria within the available quota. A September 2027 student can’t rely on an exemption described for September 2026.

Tuition is only one part of the commitment. Add the Contribution de vie étudiante et de campus (CVEC), the annual student and campus-life contribution where required, plus application fees, deposit, insurance, travel, the first month’s rent and other upfront housing costs. Put those amounts into the first-year France budget and check the CVEC payment or exemption procedure. An unawarded exemption or scholarship is not available money.

Which application route comes first from India?

India is covered by the Campus France online procedure called Études en France (EEF), but you may still need to apply to the university before completing it. The route depends on level, institution and selectivity. An Indian applicant entering first year after Class XII from CBSE, ISC or a state board normally follows the prior-admission request called DAP through EEF for a public-university licence. A master’s may begin in EEF, an institution portal or another named system.

Paris-Saclay tells an international master’s candidate to apply in Inception first and complete the EEF “I am accepted” procedure after admission. Bordeaux and Lyon 3 publish EEF routes for relevant Indian applicants.

How do you shortlist French universities for 2027?

Build a small list you can verify properly. Two or three strong fits and a few realistic alternatives are more useful than twenty names copied from a ranking. Work in this order.

Set your non-negotiables. Write your study level, subject, maximum tuition, maximum monthly budget, French and English level and intended next step.
Find programmes. Search the Campus France catalogue and official institution sites. Record the full title, campus, length, intake and teaching percentage.
Check the qualification. Use the Ministry, CEFDG, France Compétences or CGE record that applies. Save the programme, campus and validity dates.
Test academic fit. Compare your Indian credential, grades and subject credits with the programme’s published prerequisites. Don’t assume a broad equivalence.
Confirm language proof. Record every English or French threshold, accepted test, waiver and document.
Map the route. Copy the first academic portal, EEF step, opening date, deadline, application fee and decision date from the 2027 admissions page.
Calculate the full cost. Add tuition, CVEC, deposit, living-cost budget, travel and upfront housing costs. Use the offer, fee schedule and written exemption decision. Keep unconfirmed funding out.
Check the programme structure. Compare modules, thesis, internship, campus, partner school and the language needed for internships or work.
Order only genuine choices. Keep options you meet, can fund and would attend. Label missing evidence instead of guessing.

For graduate study, first test your M1 or M2 entry point. In management, compare a MiM for an early-career applicant with an MBA for an experienced applicant. A research proposal follows the doctoral-school and supervisor route.

Stop before payment if the qualification, language, fee or application route is unclear. Email the institution with one specific question and keep its reply.
