Choosing to study in France in 2027 can make sense for an Indian student, but only when the exact programme works across five connected decisions. Its qualification must support your next academic or professional step. The correct application route must be known. The written first-year cost must be affordable. Admission must become a valid student stay. The final award must support the work route you expect after graduation. A famous school, an English-taught course or a low public fee can’t replace any one of those checks.
This guide puts those decisions in order for Indian students planning bachelor’s, master’s, MiM, MBA or doctoral study. Figures shown for 2026/27 are reference evidence because the 2027/28 public tuition and CVEC schedules were not published on the official pages checked on 11 August 2026. Euro conversions use EUR 1 = INR 110.12, rounded from the European Central Bank rate of INR 110.1228 on 10 August 2026.
Is France a good choice for an Indian student in 2027?
Yes, when the programme, cost and later outcome fit together. France offers public universities, engineering schools, business schools, grandes écoles and specialist institutions. The Campus France system overview describes more than 3,500 public and private higher-education institutions. That breadth creates choice, but it also means that the institution name alone doesn’t settle the award, teaching language, application portal or fee.
France is less suitable when the plan relies on four assumptions: that every programme called a master carries the same academic status, every Indian applicant begins in Études en France, every public course charges the lowest national fee, or every graduate receives an automatic two-year work permit. Each assumption can fail for a legitimate programme. The safer comparison uses written evidence from the exact course and intake.
| Decision | Green evidence | Amber question | Red assumption |
|---|---|---|---|
| Qualification | Exact award, awarder, campus and valid recognition period | Will the award serve the intended further study or work? | The school name proves every course |
| Application | Programme instruction naming the first portal and later EEF step | Does the India-resident route differ from the general page? | Every application starts in one national portal |
| Money | Tuition invoice, CVEC result, living plan and arrival reserve | Is any exemption or scholarship confirmed in writing? | A headline public fee is the full first-year cost |
| Visa | Admission, completed academic route and personalised France-Visas list | Which funds and accommodation evidence does this file request? | Admission guarantees the visa |
| After study | Final award matched to APS, RECE, employee or Talent conditions | Does the job meet the relationship, salary and timing tests? | Every graduate receives two open years |
The first practical step is a programme-level France institution shortlist. Compare the subject, qualification, teaching language, first application route and complete cost before using rank or reputation as a tie-breaker.
A shortlist is ready for comparison only when the same fields exist for every option. One programme with a published 2026/27 fee can’t be compared fairly with another whose total cost excludes compulsory charges. An English label also needs a percentage or module list, because a partly English course may retain assessed French modules. The final row should state the intended result, such as an Indian professional return, a French graduate job or doctoral entry. That result determines which recognition and immigration evidence matters before any deposit is paid.
What should you verify before choosing a French institution?
Verify the legal award, not only the course title. A diplôme national de master, shortened to DNM, is France’s national Master’s degree. Grade de master is an academic grade that can attach to a DNM and certain other authorised awards. A CEFDG visa is time-limited state authorisation for an exact management diploma. RNCP level 7 describes a professional qualification level. A CGE MSc or Mastère Spécialisé is a programme-specific collective label. These statuses can overlap, but they aren’t interchangeable.
The French degree-recognition hierarchy shows how to check the legal programme name, campus, awarder and validity dates. One school can issue two programmes with different status. A marketing title such as MBA, MSc, MiM or Master doesn’t transfer another programme’s recognition.
Each establishment defines its own admission criteria, according to the student’s background and the programme requirements.Campus France
Recognition also depends on the next decision-maker. A French doctoral school decides whether an award and research preparation support doctoral entry. An Indian university, employer or statutory council decides what it accepts for later use in India. ENIC-NARIC France can compare an Indian qualification for use in France, but its statement is non-binding and does not decide French-to-India equivalence.
The validity period needs to cover the expected award date, not merely the application date. This distinction matters for a two-year programme that begins near the end of a current authorisation. The saved evidence should identify the legal awarder as well as the teaching school, since a partner may deliver classes while another institution awards the qualification. For later use in India, French recognition is the starting evidence. It does not replace the current written requirement of the receiving university, employer, UGC process or professional regulator.
| Claim | What it may prove | What still needs evidence |
|---|---|---|
| National degree | State-accredited academic award for the named programme | Admission, Indian use and professional practice |
| Grade de master | Formal academic Master grade for the authorised award and period | Whether it is a DNM and whether a receiver accepts it |
| CEFDG visa | State authorisation for an exact management diploma | Whether grade de master is separately granted |
| RNCP level 7 | Professional certification at French level 7 | Academic grade, ECTS and overseas equivalence |
| CGE label | Quality label for an exact programme at an eligible member school | Separate state, academic and professional records |
Save the official entry before paying a non-refundable deposit. It should cover the programme, campus and expected award date. If an authorisation ends before graduation, obtain the later published decision rather than relying on an expected renewal.
Which course route fits your stage?
The appropriate level depends on prior study, subject preparation, experience and career goal. A three-year or four-year Indian bachelor’s can be assessed for French master’s admission, but no national rule guarantees entry. The faculty or school decides whether the degree, modules and grades support M1, the first Master’s year, or M2, the second.
| Your stage | Route to examine | Decisive evidence | Detailed guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| After Class XII or early undergraduate study | Licence, school bachelor or another recognised first-cycle programme | Entry route, teaching language, exact award and total first-year cost | Universities and institution types |
| After a relevant Indian bachelor’s | M1, M2 or another graduate programme | Prior level, subject prerequisites and academic award | Master’s entry in France |
| Final year to early career | MiM, Programme Grande École or specialised master’s | Experience fit, award status, cohort and complete tuition schedule | MiM route comparison |
| Experienced professional | MBA or executive programme | Published work-experience rule, cohort outcome, award and economic payback | MBA fit and payback |
| Research-ready postgraduate | National doctorate | Supervisor, host unit, doctoral school, topic and complete funding | PhD route in France |
Teaching language is a separate filter. An English-taught programme can have no French admission prerequisite, while a partly English track can still assess compulsory work in French. DELF and DALF are level-specific diplomas valid for life. TCF is purpose-specific and time-limited. The exact programme and application route choose the evidence, so use the DELF, DALF and TCF decision guide before paying for a test.
How does the complete study in France decision sequence work?
A France plan becomes reliable when five records connect. No single official page joins them because qualification, admission, money, immigration and post-study work belong to different authorities. The student’s task is to make the hand-off between those authorities visible.
| Record | What to write down | Decision it unlocks | Cost of leaving it blank |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Qualification | Exact award, legal awarder, campus, recognition and valid period | Whether the programme serves later study, work and immigration | A course title may not provide the status expected |
| 2. Application route | First portal, EEF stage, live deadline and submission proof | Where and when the academic file must move | A valid programme can still be missed through the wrong route |
| 3. First-year money | Written tuition, CVEC result, living plan, housing setup and confirmed funding | Whether the offer is affordable before relying on future income | A low fee can hide an unfunded arrival or higher invoice |
| 4. Visa and arrival | Admission, Campus France stage, funds, accommodation, VFS file and VLS-TS validation | Whether study can become lawful residence | Admission alone does not create a valid stay |
| 5. Post-study transition | Final award, current document, job or project, salary and filing date | Which search, employee, business or Talent route may fit | The expected graduate period may not exist for that award |
Usable France plan = recognised programme x correct route x funded first year x valid student stay x evidence-based graduate route
This is an Nbyula planning calculation, not an official selection or visa formula. Give each factor 1 only when current written evidence supports it. Any zero identifies the next unresolved decision. A student with a recognised programme and admission can still score zero on money if the budget depends on an unawarded scholarship. Another student can fund the course but score zero on route if the programme’s India-resident instruction is unknown.
Consider an Indian BSc graduate admitted to an M1 programme that awards a DNM. The institution confirms that EEF receives the academic application and later issues the offer. The provisional 2026/27 money record uses EUR 3,950 differentiated tuition until a written exemption exists, EUR 105 CVEC, EUR 12,000 for twelve months at the student’s EUR 1,000 monthly living plan, and EUR 1,500 for housing setup. Those four lines total EUR 17,555, about INR 19.33 lakh at the dated ECB rate, before EEF, visa, VFS, validation, travel and insurance. Because twelve months of living costs are already included, the visa resource figure is evidence to reconcile with that plan, not a second EUR 10,530 expense to add automatically.
The example becomes usable only when all five records agree. The DNM supplies the qualification evidence. The EEF instruction supplies the route. The invoice, CVEC result and cash sheet supply the budget. Admission and the personalised checklist begin the visa stage. After graduation, the DNM can support a post-study route check, but it still does not guarantee APS issue, renewal, a qualifying job or a later status change. One worked file therefore exposes assumptions that separate admission, cost and visa checklists can hide.
Which France application route applies from India?
India is covered by Études en France, shortened to EEF, but EEF is not automatically the first academic portal for every programme. A first-year public-university route can use DAP inside EEF. A school-led MiM or MBA commonly starts on the school’s own or named common platform. A doctorate normally begins with the doctoral school, supervisor, host laboratory and funding route. Some university master’s applications begin in EEF, while another university can require its portal before the accepted-candidate EEF stage.
The Campus France India and EEF route map separates academic selection, file review, interview and the later visa decision. Campus France does not decide admission, and VFS Global does not decide the visa.
After receiving approval for admission from Université Paris-Saclay, you can create your account on the Études en France portal.Université Paris-Saclay
The quote demonstrates a direct-first route at one university. It does not create a rule for every programme. Copy the instruction for applicants resident in India from the exact 2027 course page, then record the role of EEF beside it.
The organisations in this sequence have separate decisions. The institution assesses academic admission. Campus France India reviews the applicable EEF record and conducts the academic interview. VFS receives the visa file and biometrics. The French consular authority decides the visa. A completed interview therefore cannot be treated as admission or visa approval, and a VFS receipt proves submission rather than a positive decision. Keeping each output under its owner makes a missing stage visible before the next appointment.
There is also no single France deadline. DAP, Parcoursup, EEF, Mon Master, institution portals and school rounds follow separate calendars. The France intakes and deadline tracker distinguishes a closed 2026/27 reference from a live 2027 date. A named HEC or INSEAD round cannot be reused for another school.
- Fix the programme and intake. Save the exact campus, award and teaching language.
- Find the India-resident instruction. Record the first academic portal and any later EEF action.
- Copy every separate date. Application, result, response, deposit, scholarship, EEF and visa work are not one deadline.
- Prepare route-specific evidence. Tests, references, portfolio, experience and research documents depend on the programme.
- Retain proof. Save submissions, payment receipts, interview instructions and written clarifications.
How much should an Indian student budget for France?
Start with the written tuition invoice, not a national fee quoted without scope. For 2026/27, the official registration-fee page lists ordinary public rates of EUR 178 for licence and EUR 255 for master. It also lists differentiated rates of EUR 2,902 and EUR 3,950 that can apply to new non-EU students. Private institutions and institution diplomas can set different tuition. The 2027/28 amounts were pending on 11 August 2026.
CVEC, the student and campus life contribution, is separate. The official 2026/27 amount is EUR 105, about INR 11,563 at the dated ECB rate. An exempt student still obtains an attestation, while a student outside the process does not. The CVEC decision table separates paying, exempt and outside-scope registrations.
Living costs need a city and housing route. CROUS, private student residences and direct rentals have different availability, guarantor and deposit rules. Visale can help an eligible tenant with a guarantee, but timing matters. A lease or reservation can require cash before an aid decision or later monthly income. Use the France accommodation sequence to budget the deposit, first rent, temporary stay and guarantor evidence.
| Line | Safe planning evidence | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | Exact invoice and written exemption for the 2027/28 cohort | Using the lowest national fee for a private or differentiated case |
| CVEC | Live campaign amount and paid, exempt or outside-scope result | Treating a tuition waiver as a CVEC decision |
| Monthly living | City-specific rent, food, transport, utilities and personal plan | Using the visa floor as a comfortable budget |
| Arrival reserve | Deposit, first rent, temporary housing, travel and setup costs | Assuming aid or a stipend arrives before every payment |
| Process charges | EEF, visa, VFS and post-arrival validation as separate items | Calling one fee the complete visa cost |
| Funding | Sanctioned loan, available savings and final award letters | Counting a pending scholarship or future job as cash |
First-year funding gap = written tuition + CVEC + 12-month living plan + process charges + arrival reserve − confirmed funds available before each due date
The complete France cost guide works through EUR and INR cases. It also explains why a student should normally use EUR 0 from CAF housing aid after 1 July 2026 when the only French status is student, unless a statutory exception applies.
Housing timing belongs in the calculation, not only the monthly rent. Current Campus France planning guidance puts an average CROUS residence near EUR 450 a month in Paris and EUR 350 elsewhere, while a private studio can begin near EUR 800 in Paris and EUR 400 elsewhere. These are orientation figures rather than 2027 quotations. A new international student may also reach the CROUS complementary phase only after private options have begun asking for a deposit. The safe cash schedule therefore covers temporary accommodation, deposit, first rent and any overlap without assuming that the deposit is consumed annual spending.
CAF changed the baseline from 1 July 2026. The official CAF notice says the affected non-EU student route now depends on the defined social-criteria scholarship, with separate work, apprenticeship and protected-status exceptions. Charpak, Eiffel or a university merit award does not automatically satisfy that condition. For a typical new Indian student whose only status is student, EUR 0 is consequently the defensible starting allowance in the first-year budget.
Scholarships solve different parts of the gap. A tuition reduction, monthly stipend and travel contribution are not interchangeable, and payment can begin after arrival. The France scholarship comparison distinguishes direct applications, programme selection and institution nomination. The Charpak routes for Indian students and institution-nominated Eiffel route each need a live 2027 call. An unconfirmed award has a value of zero in the starting budget.
How does admission become a valid student stay?
Admission is the academic decision. The consular authority makes the visa decision. An Indian student completes the academic and EEF route required for the programme, creates the France-Visas application when the India instructions permit it, and attends the authorised VFS centre for file collection and biometrics. The personalised France-Visas assistant supplies the actual supporting-document list.
For applications filed from 1 August 2026, the legal resource rule is at least 47% of the filing-date gross monthly SMIC. The checked operational amount is EUR 877.50 a month, about INR 96,633 at the dated ECB rate. Twelve months is EUR 10,530, about INR 11.60 lakh. This is an evidence floor, not proof that a student can live comfortably in every city or pay tuition.
L’étranger justifie disposer de moyens d’existence mensuels correspondant au moins à 47 % du montant brut du salaire minimum de croissance mensuel.Légifrance, Decree 2026-526
| Stage | Evidence or action | Decision owner |
|---|---|---|
| Academic admission | Meet programme conditions and obtain the accepted offer | Institution or programme |
| Campus France and EEF | Complete the instructed file, payment and academic interview stages | Campus France process |
| France-Visas | Use the personal assistant, form and supporting-document list | French consular authority |
| VFS appointment | Attend in person with the file and biometrics | Authorised collection centre |
| Arrival | Enter within validity and complete the required residence formalities | Student through the official portal |
| VLS-TS validation | Validate online within three months and pay the applicable tax | French immigration administration |
The INR 20,000 EEF fee from 1 August 2026, the indicative reduced EUR 50 long-stay visa fee for the EEF-processed student, the variable VFS service charge and the EUR 150 post-arrival VLS-TS validation tax are separate lines. The France student visa guide for Indian applicants explains the category, funds, appointment, arrival and validation evidence without claiming a universal approval rate.
Can you work while studying and after graduation?
A standard student VLS-TS or student residence card normally permits up to 964 salaried hours in its residence-title year. That is not a guaranteed 20-hour weekly schedule, and a part-time job is supplementary income rather than a safe answer to an unfunded tuition or rent gap. A curricular internship under a valid convention follows separate limits and does not consume the 964-hour employment quota.
After graduation, the exact award matters again. India’s bilateral Master APS is a 12-month temporary residence authorisation that can be renewed once for a qualifying master-equivalent award and related employment conditions. It is not one automatic two-year open permit. Ordinary RECE is a separate one-year, non-renewable job-search or business-creation route for listed qualifications. A graduate with a suitable job can instead examine direct employee or carte talent status.
The change from student status is a new evidence test, not a reward for finishing any course. The file can depend on the final diploma, relation between the job and training, contract, current salary threshold and application timing. A school certificate marketed as Bac+5 may not satisfy the same route as a qualifying national or grade-bearing master’s award. The post-study record in the five-step map should therefore be completed from the actual graduation document and current residence page, then matched to the job rather than inferred from the programme title used at admission.
The France post-study work route map keeps APS, RECE, employee status, qualified Talent and the EU Blue Card separate. As of 11 August 2026, the relevant published salary tests include more than EUR 2,800.53 gross monthly for qualifying RECE work, EUR 39,582 gross annually for qualified-employee Talent and EUR 59,373 for the EU Blue Card. These figures answer different legal tests and must be rechecked at filing.
A five-year alumni circulation visa does not permit work or job search. Likewise, an immediate ANEF online submission receipt does not by itself prove lawful stay or authorise work. Residence duration, work permission and the later professional status are separate decisions.
How should you prepare to study in France in 2027?
Work backwards from the earliest live programme deadline, not from a general September label. France’s main academic start is in autumn, while January entry exists only for selected courses. The sequence below uses planning periods rather than invented national deadlines.
| Planning period | Action | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| August to September 2026 | Choose level, subject, institution type, city and complete cost ceiling | Initial programme matrix and family funding limit |
| Before each application opens | Verify award, prerequisites, language, first portal and exact 2027 date | Official course page and recognition record |
| Before the earliest deadline | Complete tests, references, essays, portfolio or research evidence | Score reports, signed documents and upload-ready files |
| During programme applications | Submit through the correct route and track every separate response date | Submission, payment and interview records |
| Before accepting an offer | Replace estimates with the invoice, exemption, scholarship and housing cash plan | Offer, fee schedule and confirmed funding |
| After admission | Complete the instructed EEF, Campus France, France-Visas and VFS stages | Validated file, interview, checklist and appointment evidence |
| Before departure | Confirm accommodation, arrival cash, insurance, CVEC treatment and registration | Lease or booking, attestation and payment schedule |
| After arrival | Validate the VLS-TS within three months and preserve residence records | Validation and tax confirmation |
A useful tracker keeps one line per programme, covering the legal award, campus, teaching language, prerequisite, first portal, application close, response date, deposit, full tuition, scholarship result and post-study relevance. This one-page sequence prevents the institution shortlist, budget and visa file from becoming three contradictory plans.
- France fits when the exact award, application route, first-year money, visa sequence and graduate route work together.
- DNM, grade de master, CEFDG visa, RNCP level 7 and CGE labels answer different recognition questions.
- India uses Études en France, but the academic application can begin on another official portal.
- The 2027/28 public tuition and CVEC schedules were pending on 11 August 2026, so use written cohort evidence.
- The visa resource floor is separate from tuition and from a comfortable city budget.
- India’s Master APS is 12 months renewable once, not an automatic two-year open work permit.
Frequently asked questions about studying in France
Is France good for Indian students in 2027?
France can fit when the exact programme provides the qualification, language, cost and later outcome you need. Compare the award, India-resident application route, complete first-year budget, visa sequence and post-study conditions together. A famous school or low public fee cannot settle the full decision by itself.
How much does it cost to study in France?
The answer depends on the programme, fee status, city and housing. For 2026/27, ordinary public licence and master rates are EUR 178 and EUR 255, while differentiated rates can be EUR 2,902 and EUR 3,950. Add CVEC, twelve months of living costs, process charges and arrival cash.
Can I study in France after a three-year Indian degree?
Yes, some programmes assess a three-year Indian bachelor’s for master’s entry, but no national rule guarantees acceptance. The institution checks the qualification level, subject modules, grades, prerequisites and intended M1 or M2 entry. Obtain the exact programme’s written eligibility decision before paying a deposit or assuming admission.
Do I need French to study in France?
Not for every course. A fully English-taught programme can have no French admission prerequisite, while a French or mixed-language route may require DELF, DALF, TCF or another accepted test. The exact programme and application route decide the evidence. Practical French remains useful for housing, administration and work.
Does every application start in Études en France?
No. India is covered by Études en France, but the first academic application depends on the programme. DAP can sit inside EEF, while a university, business school or doctoral route may start elsewhere. Save the current India-resident instruction and record where the accepted-candidate EEF stage belongs.
How much money is needed for a France student visa?
For applications filed from 1 August 2026, the checked resource amount is EUR 877.50 per month, or EUR 10,530 for twelve months when that period applies. It is an evidence floor, not tuition or a comfortable living budget. The personalised France-Visas checklist controls the documents for the individual case.
Can students work while studying in France?
A standard student VLS-TS or residence card normally permits up to 964 salaried hours in its year of validity. This is not a guaranteed weekly schedule, and the income should supplement rather than rescue the budget. Curricular internships under a proper convention follow separate rules and do not use that quota.
Can Indian graduates stay in France for two years?
An eligible Indian graduate may receive the bilateral Master APS for twelve months and seek one renewal. That is not one automatic two-year open permit. The exact award, current procedure, related work and salary conditions matter. Ordinary RECE is a separate one-year route that current guidance says cannot be renewed.
