Cost of Living in Poland: The Four Figures a First Year Needs

The cost of living in Poland can start at PLN 1,500 a month for a student, while the official national orientation runs from PLN 1,500 to PLN 2,000. That means PLN 18,000 to PLN 24,000 for 12 months before tuition. It doesn’t mean every student in Warsaw, Krakow or private housing can live within that range. Poland’s official study portal says the city changes the result.

A useful first-year plan needs four separate figures. They are the programme’s tuition, a realistic living budget, the visa funds floor and the cash the university wants before it issues visa documents. This guide combines current 2026/27 fees with three transparent budgets in PLN and INR. The INR illustrations use the European Central Bank cross-rate recorded on 7 August 2026, when PLN 1 equalled about INR 25.5514. Current evidence can guide 2027 planning, but it isn’t a 2027 fee promise.

What are the four cost numbers?

One grand total is a poor starting point. The four numbers answer different questions, appear at different stages and may sit in different accounts. A family can afford a programme over one year yet still struggle with an early tuition invoice. It can also have enough cash to pay tuition but fail to show the separate money required by the visa checklist.

The four-number Poland budget testGreen is a planning cost. Amber is a document test. Red means the figures cannot be merged.
Number What it answers Evidence to use Common mistake
Annual tuition What year one of the named programme costs Current official fee schedule and offer Using a national average instead of the actual course
Living plan What 12 months of housing and daily life may cost Confirmed housing plus a personal monthly budget Treating the lowest dorm rate as guaranteed
Visa funds floor What the India checklist asks you to evidence Checklist formula and documented accommodation Calling it the expected annual spend
Cash before visa What must already be paid to the university Offer, invoice and visa-document rule Assuming an advertised instalment plan applies before visa papers

The current India study-visa checklist illustrates the split. It requires evidence that tuition has been paid, unless the course is confirmed as free. It then calculates available living, accommodation and return funds separately. Money already transferred to a university can’t silently do both jobs.

Course choice comes first because it fixes the largest known line. The universities in Poland guide helps verify the institution and programme. A student comparing postgraduate routes can then check the Poland master’s guide before building the cost sheet.

What does living in Poland cost each month?

The official low orientation is PLN 1,500 to PLN 2,000 a month. Over 12 months, that becomes PLN 18,000 to PLN 24,000. At the 7 August 2026 reference cross-rate, the annual range is about INR 4.60 to 6.13 lakh. It works as a common comparison base until the real housing offer replaces that line.

The cost of living for students can start from 1500 PLN (330 EUR) a month.
Study.gov.pl

Cost line Official monthly range How to use it
Student residence PLN 400 to 600 Only as an orientation until a room and rate are confirmed
Groceries PLN 700 to 900 Adjust for diet, cooking access and eating out
Transport PLN 50 to 60 Check the chosen city’s student pass rules
Insurance PLN 40 to 60 Do not substitute this orientation for the actual visa policy premium
Phone, internet and television PLN 80 to 100 Check what the housing charge already includes
Entertainment PLN 150 to 200 Keep it adjustable when rent or food rises

These components come from Study.gov.pl. They are useful because they reveal what a monthly total is meant to contain. They don’t prove that a private room, premium dormitory or a large-city lifestyle fits within PLN 2,000. The same official page expressly says prices depend on the city.

There is another mismatch. The listed residence range is lower than several current university quotes. Warsaw University of Technology publishes PLN 420 to PLN 770 for 2026/27. AGH’s regular-student comfort rate becomes PLN 690 from January 2027. This doesn’t make the national page wrong. It shows why a national orientation must give way to the named housing offer.

A monthly plan should therefore have two versions. The comparison version uses PLN 1,500 to PLN 2,000 for every course on the shortlist. The decision version uses the actual dorm charge or signed private-housing cost, then adds the student’s real food, transport, communication and personal estimates. Only the decision version belongs in the final family budget.

How much are university fees in Poland?

Poland university fees vary by course, institution, study level and payment schedule. The national tuition overview is useful for orientation, but the university sets the amount. For a 2027 plan, current named 2026/27 fees are more useful than a broad national average.

University and programme Current tuition First-year amount used Application fee
AMU, Central Europe in the International Perspective PLN 3,000 per semester PLN 6,000 PLN 100
Gdansk Tech, Data Engineering and selected engineering bachelors PLN 10,000 per semester PLN 20,000 PLN 100 for the current Indian-certificate route
Kozminski, full-time Master in Management PLN 38,800 in one annual payment PLN 38,800 PLN 100
University of Warsaw, selected economics programmes EUR 4,900 in one payment EUR 4,900 PLN 85 under the university’s current application rule

The table is not a ranking. It demonstrates the width of current university fees in Poland and the need to compare like with like. AMU’s example is a humanities second-cycle programme. Gdansk Tech’s example is a first-cycle engineering route. Kozminski is a private management degree. Course fit and recognition still matter more than the lowest fee.

Payment format can change the total. The University of Warsaw schedule charges EUR 4,900 for one annual payment on selected economics programmes, EUR 5,050 in two payments and EUR 5,200 in ten. Instalments improve timing but add EUR 300 against the one-payment option. The full billed year is the valid comparison, not the attractive monthly line.

Invoice currency also matters. AMU, Gdansk Tech and Kozminski quote the examples above in PLN, while the selected Warsaw schedule is in EUR. A EUR invoice needs the direct EUR to INR rate because a rounded PLN intermediate creates error. Bank and intermediary charges can also make the amount sent exceed the academic invoice.

What do three first-year budgets look like?

The three scenarios use one consistent formula. This makes the programme fee visible without pretending that the official living orientation is a guaranteed personal spend.

First-year planning cost = year-one tuition + 12 months living + current application fee

Scenario Tuition Living for 12 months Application Planning total INR orientation
AMU Central Europe master’s PLN 6,000 PLN 18,000 to 24,000 PLN 100 PLN 24,100 to 30,100 INR 6.16 to 7.69 lakh
Gdansk Tech engineering bachelor PLN 20,000 PLN 18,000 to 24,000 PLN 100 PLN 38,100 to 44,100 INR 9.74 to 11.27 lakh
Kozminski Master in Management PLN 38,800 PLN 18,000 to 24,000 PLN 100 PLN 56,900 to 62,900 INR 14.54 to 16.07 lakh

Three scenarios using 2026/27 fees and PLN 1 = INR 25.5514 on 7 August 2026

The AMU calculation is PLN 6,000 tuition plus PLN 18,000 to PLN 24,000 living plus a PLN 100 application fee. The same arithmetic produces the other two rows. All INR values use PLN 1 = INR 25.5514, derived from ECB reference rates recorded on 7 August 2026. They are dated planning illustrations, not the rate a bank will offer later.

The totals exclude flights, the actual insurance premium, visa charges, apostille and translation, bank fees, technology, private-rent deposits and personal setup purchases. Those costs vary or were not fully published on the three programme pages. If Gdansk Tech allocates a dorm place, its current FAQ says a refundable PLN 700 deposit then joins the plan.

Awarded funding can reduce the family contribution, but an application cannot. The Poland scholarships guide separates current NAWA, Erasmus Mundus and university funding routes. Until an official award letter exists, keep the scholarship value at zero in the committed budget.

How is the Poland visa funds amount calculated?

The current India checklist uses a formula, not the Study.gov.pl monthly living range. For a single student, it asks for PLN 1,010 for each month of the intended stay, the documented accommodation cost for those months and PLN 2,500 for return travel. Tuition sits outside this formula and must be shown as paid or free.

Visa funds floor = PLN 1,010 x stay months + accommodation for those months + PLN 2,500 return funds

For a 12-month intended stay with accommodation documented at PLN 1,500 a month, the calculation is PLN 12,120 for the monthly base, PLN 18,000 for accommodation and PLN 2,500 for return funds. The total evidence floor is PLN 32,620, about INR 8.33 lakh at the dated cross-rate.

This result is not the expected cost of living. It is also not a second tuition bill. It is the checklist’s financial-evidence calculation using the accommodation amount on the file. A different documented rent changes the total by that difference for every month. The exact evidence format, sponsor and bank-document rules belong in the Poland student visa guide.

Do the calculation only after the accommodation document is clear. If you use a dorm rate before receiving a place, the number may not match the final visa file. If the university issues accommodation evidence for a shorter period, follow the checklist and the consular instructions that apply to the actual intended stay rather than inventing an annual assumption.

How much cash is due before the visa?

The answer comes from the named university, not a Poland-wide rule. The India checklist asks for proof that tuition has been paid. Universities then decide what they invoice and when they issue the admission or supporting document. Published instalments for enrolled students do not always tell a visa applicant what must be transferred first.

Pre-visa payment checkThe personal offer controls where the public page does not state the exact visa-stage invoice.
Scenario Published position Safe cash-flow treatment
AMU example PLN 3,000 per semester and four instalments of PLN 750 per semester are published Use the student’s invoice for the exact amount needed before visa filing
Gdansk Tech example At least one semester is payable, usually within two weeks of the offer PLN 10,000 tuition plus the current PLN 100 application fee enters the early cash plan
Kozminski example Visa-requiring foreign students must pay one full year before visa documents are issued Plan PLN 38,800 tuition plus the PLN 100 admission fee before the visa-document stage

Kozminski makes the cash-flow risk explicit on its Master in Management page. A foreigner who needs a visa must pay one full year before the university issues the invitation and admission decision used in the visa process. That means the annual payment option is operationally relevant even though monthly prices appear in the same fee table.

Refund terms also belong in the decision. The Polish embassy’s student-fee refund information tells applicants to check the institution’s agreement and procedure. The University of Wroclaw, for example, publishes administrative deductions for several refund situations. The current contract therefore matters before a large transfer.

Can a dormitory price be used as the housing budget?

Only after the room is allocated. A dorm quote can support a shortlist comparison, but it can’t be treated as confirmed housing. Three current official pages show why.

  • Warsaw University of Technology publishes PLN 420 to PLN 770 per month for 2026/27 and a PLN 500 guarantee fee before the accommodation letter. Admitted candidates can apply through its system.
  • AGH University Student Campus charges regular students PLN 550 to PLN 650 from October through December 2026, then PLN 580 to PLN 690 from January 2027. Its allocation rules continue offers only until places are used.
  • Gdansk Tech says the current maximum dorm fee is PLN 700, with a refundable PLN 700 deposit. Heavy demand means it cannot offer single rooms.

The right housing budget has a confirmed case and a fallback case. The confirmed case uses the room rate, included utilities, deposit and payment date in the accommodation letter. The fallback case leaves private housing as an unresolved amount until a credible offer exists. This page does not use an unsourced city-average rent to fill that gap.

A dormitory rate is a price, while an accommodation letter is evidence. They are not interchangeable.

Housing also changes the visa formula. A PLN 700 monthly dorm document produces a different evidence amount from a PLN 1,500 private-housing document. A calculation based on the cheaper figure will not match a file that contains the more expensive contract.

How should a 2027 Poland budget be built?

No official source read for this guide publishes complete 2027/28 tuition and accommodation schedules across the named institutions. Current 2026/27 evidence supports preparation, followed by a refresh of each moving part. The budget should survive a higher housing quote, exchange movement and a scholarship refusal.

  1. The course record starts with invoice currency, annual tuition, instalment total and application fee.
  2. PLN 18,000 to PLN 24,000 provides a first 12-month comparison range, with the explicit warning that it isn’t a city guarantee.
  3. The dorm or private accommodation offer then replaces the provisional housing portion.
  4. Published deposits and setup charges join the total. Flights, insurance, translations, banking and equipment remain unresolved until quoted.
  5. The visa funds floor follows the current India checklist and the same accommodation document that will enter the file.
  6. The offer determines what tuition is payable before the university releases visa documents. A post-enrolment instalment table cannot settle this by itself.
  7. PLN and EUR invoices receive separate near-payment conversions, including the transfer provider’s charges.
  8. The study in Poland guide provides the intake checkpoint when 2027 pages open and provisional fees can be replaced.

A sound plan has a base case and a stress case. The base case uses confirmed tuition and housing. The stress case removes unawarded scholarships, moves living costs above the national orientation and assumes a weaker INR conversion. If the course works only in the base case, the family needs a cheaper option, more funding or more time before committing.

Medical routes need their own cost model because tuition can run for six years and clinical requirements affect the decision. The medicine in Poland guide is the relevant route instead of multiplying one general university fee across the degree.

Key takeaways

  • The official monthly living orientation is PLN 1,500 to PLN 2,000, but it is not a city or private-rent guarantee.
  • Current named first-year tuition examples range from PLN 6,000 at AMU to PLN 38,800 at Kozminski.
  • The three planning scenarios run from PLN 24,100 to PLN 62,900 before excluded setup costs.
  • The visa funds formula is separate from both tuition and the realistic annual living plan.
  • A university can require major tuition payment before issuing visa documents, even when instalments are advertised.
  • Dorm rates become reliable budget inputs only after a room is allocated.
  • All INR figures use a 7 August 2026 reference cross-rate and must be refreshed near payment.
  • Every 2026/27 fee, dorm rate and visa rule needs a new check for the 2027 intake.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cost of living in Poland for an Indian student?

Poland’s official study portal gives a low orientation of PLN 1,500 to PLN 2,000 monthly, or PLN 18,000 to PLN 24,000 for 12 months. Your real figure can be higher because city, housing and lifestyle matter. Replace the housing line with an actual offer before deciding.

How much are Poland university fees for international students?

There is no single fee. Current examples include PLN 6,000 for the first year of one AMU master’s, PLN 20,000 for selected Gdansk Tech engineering bachelors and PLN 38,800 for Kozminski’s full-time Master in Management. Check the exact 2027 programme schedule before paying.

Is PLN 2,000 a month enough for a student in Poland?

It is the top of the official national orientation, not a guarantee. A dorm place, regular cooking and modest personal spending may help. Private housing or a larger city can raise the budget. Use PLN 2,000 only for early comparison, then substitute confirmed accommodation and personal estimates.

How much money must I show for a Poland student visa?

The current India checklist uses PLN 1,010 for each intended-stay month, plus documented accommodation for those months and PLN 2,500 return funds. Tuition is separate and needs payment evidence unless study is free. Your housing document and stay length therefore determine the actual calculation.

Is the visa funds amount the same as one-year living cost?

No. The visa amount is a documentary floor produced by the current checklist formula. A realistic living plan uses the student’s expected housing and daily spending. The two may differ, and neither includes tuition automatically. Keep all three lines separate in the family budget.

Do I have to pay full tuition before applying for the visa?

It depends on the university. Kozminski expressly requires visa-requiring foreign students to pay one full year before it issues the necessary visa documents. Other institutions can use a semester invoice or personal payment order. Read the offer and refund rules instead of assuming one Poland-wide practice.

Does a published dorm fee mean I will get a room?

No. Warsaw University of Technology asks admitted candidates to apply, AGH allocates eligible places until they run out, and Gdansk Tech reports demand that prevents single-room offers. Use the dorm price only after allocation and keep a private-housing fallback before the visa file is final.

What costs are excluded from the first-year scenarios?

The three scenarios exclude flights, actual insurance premiums, visa charges, apostille and translation, bank fees, technology, private-rent deposits and personal setup purchases. These vary or were not fully published for every route. Add each quoted item separately instead of hiding guessed costs inside a rounded total.
